Shelf Life Shelf life is typically two years from date of manufacture when stored dry, cool, and in original unopened packaging.
    Application of Techno-UMG DIALAC® ASA S310

In unpainted exterior mirror housings and under-windshield cowl grilles, the absence of a paint stack means that UV stability, dry-as-molded gloss, and stress-cracking resistance are processing-defined rather than coating-defined. Techno-UMG DIALAC® ASA S310 is dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C until the residual moisture content falls below 0.03%; the dryer supply air is maintained at a dew point below -30 °C, and the drying time is extended from 2 h to 4 h when the warehouse relative humidity exceeds 60%. Molding is performed on a reciprocating-screw injection machine with an L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1, a volumetric screw compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.6:1, and a shot volume between 30% and 70% of barrel capacity. The melt temperature is controlled in a narrow band from 230 °C to 250 °C, because excursions above 255 °C are associated with brown streaking from prolonged residence time. The tool surface temperature is set at 50 °C to 70 °C to produce the Class A black surface without inducing excessive sink at the mirror-shell boss. Cavity filling is completed within 1.0 s to 2.2 s for wall thicknesses between 2.2 mm and 3.0 mm; a faster fill produces jetting at the side gate, while a slower fill increases visible flow-front hesitation at the louver intersections. Holding pressure is applied at 40 MPa to 60 MPa and is maintained until gate freeze, typically 3 s to 5 s after screw switchover. The screw cushion is kept between 3 mm and 6 mm, and screw-back pressure is set at 0.5 MPa to 1.5 MPa for stable color dispersion. Weld lines are relocated outside the mirror-shell outer surface by using a sub-gate at the inner boss; weld lines that remain on the grille face are treated with a local mold temperature of 70 °C to improve knit-line integrity. Outer-shell distortion after ejection is checked on a granite surface plate, and the tolerance for sink mark depth is held below 2 µm when measured perpendicular to the Class A surface with a contact profilometer. The molded mirror housing is tested for weathering under SAE J2527 and for low-temperature impact after weathering under ISO 179-1:2010; if high-UVA retention is critical, published data for this specific S310 formulation is limited, and a three-batch verification is typically run against ISO 4892-2:2013 Method A cycle 1 before production approval. Ejector pin surfaces are textured to VDI 24 because polished pin ends create micro-deformation streaks that become visible after thermal cycling. The in-service continuous-temperature boundary is set at 75 °C based on heat deflection testing under ISO 75-2:2013 HDT/A at 1.82 MPa; components installed above this limit require a high-heat grade or additional ribbing.

What Limits Blistering in Coextruded Window Profile Capstock?

When a window profile manufacturer replaces painted PVC or all-acrylic capstock with a two-layer profile, the ASA capstock is run at a thickness from 0.15 mm to 0.30 mm over a rigid PVC core by profile coextrusion. The S310 capstock melt is held at 210 °C to 240 °C, while the PVC core is maintained at 180 °C to 200 °C to minimize hydrochloric acid liberation and plate-out on vacuum calibrators. The melt merge point is configured in the feedblock with matched viscosity ratios; if the apparent viscosity mismatch at the interface exceeds 15% at a shear rate of 100 s⁻¹, the capstock layer develops interfacial micro-folds that are not visible at line speed but later form elongated blisters after accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2:2013 Method A cycle 1. The calibration zone is operated at a vacuum from -0.06 MPa to -0.08 MPa, and the first water bath is kept at 15 °C to 25 °C to lock the amorphous capstock surface without generating tensile stress at the PVC boundary. Die-lip melt pressure is held between 8 MPa and 15 MPa; pressure fluctuation above 1.5 MPa across the die width produces visible banding at the capstock surface that is not corrected by later embossing. When downline corner welding is specified for a window sash corner, hot-plate welding is performed at 230 °C to 250 °C, and the capstock thickness tolerance across the weld bead is controlled within 12% to maintain fusion strength. If the capstock thickness falls below 0.12 mm, pigment dispersion defects and glass-fiber orientation from the core become visible under a D65 light source. The profile is tested for color change, chalking, and surface cracking according to ISO 4892-2:2013 and ASTM D2244-23; a common buyer criterion is no chalking before 2,000 h and a color change of less than 3 CIELAB ΔE* after the specified irradiation interval. The heat build-up from dark gray capstock is evaluated by measuring the profile surface temperature under a 1,000 W/m² solar load; the capstock is not placed over PVC formulations with a Vicat softening temperature below 72 °C under ISO 306:2022 B50 because softened core corners collapse during installation. The use of regrind is limited to 20% by weight and is blended at the dry-blend hopper; higher regrind levels raise the capstock melt-flow index under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C with a 10 kg load and reduce the low-temperature impact reserve of the welded corner. If the final sash is fastened with self-tapping screws, the capstock is notched around the fastener holes with a radiused punch to prevent crack propagation that begins at the thread root and grows under thermal cycling from -20 °C to 60 °C.

On marine hatch-chain production lines, deck hatch edge trims and navigation light bases are molded without paint or topcoat, so resistance to salt spray and bilge-cleaner splash becomes an integral property of the ASA. The S310 material is molded at melt temperatures from 235 °C to 255 °C with a mold temperature of 65 °C to 80 °C to replicate a fine tangential grain. The upper melt limit is tied to a maximum barrel residence time of 5 min; when a hot-runner interruption extends the cycle beyond this point, unvented decomposition products create yellowing that is visible on white and light-gray lots after 500 h of ASTM G155-21 cycle 1 exposure. Rib bases are radiused to a minimum of 0.6 mm, and wall-thickness transitions are stepped at no more than 1.0 mm per 1.5 mm of flow length to avoid sink opposite light assembly bosses. The hatch trim is checked for internal stress by immersion in glacial acetic acid for 30 s; white crazing at gate bosses triggers holding-pressure reduction in 5 MPa decrements until the crazing disappears but before sink becomes visible. Screw recovery is delayed after mold open when sequential valve gates differ by more than 1.5 s, because nonuniform cushion transfer across the manifold leads to part-to-part weight variation that shifts the hatch spring-clip retention force. The mounting bosses are designed with an outer diameter to pilot diameter ratio of at least 2.0:1 to resist cracking during cold-morning installation at -20 °C. Marine components are immersed or sprayed with seawater and tested for 480 h under ISO 9227:2022 neutral salt spray, then followed by a 1,000 h SAE J2527 exterior weathering cycle; acceptance is based on no visible blistering at 10× magnification and no change in the snap-fit insertion force greater than 15%. The mold is vented at the rib tips to a land depth of 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm because trapped air at the light-base ribs leads to burn marks that became crack-initiation sites after thermal shock cycles between 5 °C and 80 °C. When a separate UV absorber package is being evaluated, the processor runs a three-batch panel test against ISO 4892-2:2013 Method B because published data for the additive-depleted S310 regrind configuration is limited.

Rooftop HVAC Guard Equipment Is Molded Under Long Flow Lengths

Rooftop air-handling unit guards and condenser-side discharge grilles are molded as large flat parts with multiple cross-bar intersections, so the S310 melt must fill long flow paths without freezing at the gate end. The material is dried at 80 °C to 85 °C for 3 h only when the plant floor relative humidity exceeds 60%; below that threshold, sealed gaylord liners hold moisture below the 0.03% processing limit. The injection machine clamp force is selected above 800 tonnes, and the shot size occupies 55% to 70% of the barrel to balance residence time and recovery. Melt temperature is kept at the lower end, 225 °C to 240 °C, because the multi-sub-gate layout extends the hold time for the entire shot. The hot runner manifold is set at 230 °C, and valve gate tips are operated at 240 °C to prevent stringing at the gate while avoiding thermal damage. Holding pressure is profiled from 55 MPa to 30 MPa over 8 s to compensate for differential shrinkage at the cross-bar intersections; a constant holding pressure creates either sink at the bar roots or warpage along the outer frame. The tool is built from P20 steel with 420 stainless gate inserts, and ejector sleeves are placed around the cross-bar ends to avoid sharp pin marks that become crack-initiation sites under fan vibration. Mold temperature is maintained at 50 °C to 70 °C; above 70 °C, cycle time increases from 55 s to over 75 s without a measurable improvement in flexural modulus under ISO 178:2019. The guard is subjected to a fan-imbalance vibration test at 25 Hz for 48 h, and the mounting tab is inspected for microcracks using dye penetrant. Long-term heat aging is evaluated at 85 °C for 7 days, followed by tensile testing per ISO 527-2:2012; if the tensile strength retention falls below 80%, the processor reduces the melt temperature in 5 °C steps or increases barrel throughput. In outdoor exposure, the guard is tested for color stability under ISO 4892-2:2013 Method A; the critical failure mode is surface chalking, which is checked with a cotton swab under a 10 N load after 2,000 h of irradiation. The fan guard is not painted, so gloss variation across the part is controlled at ±2 gloss units at 60° measurement per ASTM D523-14 by stabilising mold temperature and injection speed. If a fire-retardant grade is required by local mechanical codes, the unfilled S310 base carrier must be evaluated separately under UL 94, because flame-retardant ratings are grade-specific and cannot be assumed from the natural outdoor weathering behavior of the base resin.

Telecommunication Enclosure Access Panels Without Conductive Primer

Outdoor telecommunication cabinet access panels are injection molded with shut-off gates at the hinge bosses and snap-latch pockets to eliminate secondary trimming. The S310 melt is run at 230 °C to 250 °C and the tool is held at 45 °C to 65 °C; flat panels exceeding 800 mm × 500 mm are filled through one central valve gate and four sub-gates. The sequential valve gating sequence opens the center valve 0.5 s before the end gates, which moves the knit line out of the hinge boss and reduces gas entrapment at the snap-latch pocket. Panel flatness is measured on a granite surface plate after ejection; a bow above 2.0 mm across the 800 mm span is traced to asymmetric post-ejection cooling and is corrected by placing the part on a controlled cooling fixture at 30 °C for 45 s. If the fixture temperature is not controlled, snap-latch retention force varies by more than 15% across a 24 h production shift. The enclosure is installed outdoors and must provide ingress protection according to IEC 60529:2013 IP65; the molded panel is tested with an internal overpressure of 2 kPa at 25 °C, and the gasket groove width is held within ±0.08 mm to maintain seal compression above 25%. Weathering validation is conducted under ISO 4892-2:2013 Method A for 2,000 h; the acceptance criterion is no chalking and no color shift beyond 3 CIELAB ΔE* when measured per ASTM D2244-23. The panel is assembled with brass threaded inserts that are installed after molding; the insert boss outer diameter is at least 2.5× the thread root diameter to prevent hoop stress cracking during cold-start installation at -30 °C. The screw recovery timer is adjusted so that the melt residence time does not exceed 4 min at 250 °C; if a downstream automation fault stops the robot for more than one cycle, the next shot is purged because an idle shot at high melt temperature creates brown specking on the unpainted surface. The access panel is not coated with conductive primer, so the substrate is tested for surface resistivity only when the customer specification requires electrostatic dissipation; for such applications, the unfilled S310 formulation may require a conductive additive study, and published data for this exact unfilled grade is limited.

When Agricultural Cab Panels Delete Paint for UV Performance

When color-matched S310 is evaluated for an agricultural cab roof panel or fender extension, the painting step is removed from the cost structure and the molded part becomes the weatherable surface. The melt is processed at 240 °C to 255 °C with a mold surface of 55 °C to 70 °C; mold temperatures below 50 °C increase surface gloss variation beyond 2 gloss units at 60° measurement per ASTM D523-14. The outer face is textured to VDI 27 to reduce dirt retention from crop dust, but texture depth above 5 µm can hide pigment dispersion defects and make color drift harder to detect at lot changeovers. Resin drying is set at 80 °C for 4 h because farm build sites often store material above 65% relative humidity; the dryer dew point is kept below -30 °C. Regrind is limited to 15% by weight because higher regrind fractions shift the melt flow index by more than 10% when checked with ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C under a 10 kg load, and that shift has a measurable effect on fill pressure in the cab roof panel. The molded panel is tested for pesticide compatibility by immersion in a vehicle containing 10% agricultural chemical carrier at 40 °C for 24 h; visual dulling or dimensional change above 0.5% is cause for rejection. Diesel fuel splash resistance is checked by wiping the panel and holding it for 24 h at 23 °C; stress whitening at insert bosses indicates excessive hoop stress from the threaded insert, and the boss design is adjusted to a minimum outer diameter to pilot diameter ratio of 2.0:1. In cold-condition fender extensions, low-temperature impact performance is verified with a falling-weight test at -20 °C; the part must show no brittle crack propagation beyond 10 mm from the impact point. Weathering acceptance follows SAE J2527 for 1,000 h with color-change evaluation per ASTM D2244-23. The gate is cut to a depth of 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm and located below the fender mounting flange so that a gate blush does not project onto the exposed surface. Hot air welding is used for prototype fender extensions at 250 °C to 270 °C; the welding rod is made from the same color batch to avoid a visible seam after 500 h of field exposure.

Outdoor vending machine front panels and payment-module bezels are produced with a deep black high-gloss surface that must resist solar heat, fingerprint staining, and daily abrasion from coin handling. The S310 material is dried at 80 °C for 3 h to a residual moisture below 0.03% and molded at melt temperatures from 240 °C to 255 °C with mold temperatures from 70 °C to 85 °C to maintain a uniform high-gloss plateau. The tool surface is polished to SPI A2, and the gate is located below the payment-module opening so that flow marks and jetting do not cross the front face. A carbon black masterbatch is loaded at 0.8% to 1.2% by weight and dispersed at a screw back pressure of 0.8 MPa; if backpressure is reduced during lot changeovers, black streak density increases on the front surface. The finished panel is subjected to solar thermal soak at 85 °C for 24 h, and the gloss retention is measured at 60° geometry per ASTM D523-14. Snap-fit bosses are validated by insertion cycling at a rate of 1 cycle per 8 s for 5,000 cycles; failures occur predominantly at weld lines intersecting the boss rim, so the tool is vented at each boss base to a land depth of 0.03 mm. The payment-module bezel is also tested for chemical resistance to screen-cleaning agents; a 50% isopropanol wipe under a 500 gf load for 100 cycles must not reduce gloss by more than 2 gloss units. Outdoor UV exposure is evaluated under ASTM G155-21 cycle 1 for 1,500 h; dark panels that exceed 3 CIELAB ΔE* are rejected because the front panel is compared against a color-stable adjacent metal trim. The backside of the front panel includes screw bosses and ribbing, and the ribs are height-controlled to 40% of the adjoining wall to avoid sink on the high-gloss surface. If the panel includes a clear UV-cured hardcoat for graffiti resistance, the hardcoat supplier must qualify adhesion on the unprimed ASA surface using the cross-cut tape test according to ISO 2409:2020; published data for solventborne hardcoat adhesion to S310 is limited, and a pre-production line trial is required because molded surface polarity varies with mold temperature and cooling rate.
