    Application of Techno-UMG DIALAC® ASA MAX40

In unpainted exterior mirror housing production, the weatherable acrylic ester elastomer phase of DIALAC ASA MAX40 eliminates the allylic double-bond oxidation site present in butadiene-modified thermoplastics. OEM-facing components in this class are evaluated under ISO 4892-2 Method A with borosilicate inner and outer filters, black-standard temperature 65 °C ± 3 °C, and 0.55 W/m² irradiance at 340 nm; the same requirements are frequently transposed into SAE J2527 total-energy thresholds. Pre-drying is set at 80–90 °C for 3–4 h to maintain residual moisture below 0.02 wt%. Melt temperature at the nozzle is controlled between 240 °C and 260 °C, with mold surface temperature held at 60–80 °C to reproduce the grain replication specified for unpainted Class A surfaces. On production lines, unpainted light-gray parts develop yellowing when melt residence time exceeds the lot-specific thermal stability limit; hot-runner manifold temperatures above 260 °C and dead-end zones are the most common sources of this defect. Pigmentation for this application is introduced as 2–3 wt% ASA-compatible masterbatch with a carrier resin identical to the matrix; incompatible carriers lower Charpy notched impact and create visible flow-line streaking. Terminal components include mirror housing shells, cowl grilles, windshield garnish pieces, and lower A-pillar outer covers, all processed without in-line painting or post-mold UV coating.

Why Do Multiple Gate Locations Reduce Orientation-Induced Stress Cracking in ASA Window Lineals?

Fenestration capstock produced from DIALAC ASA MAX40 is coextruded over rigid PVC or ABS substrates in profiles where the outer layer must retain surface gloss and color stability without lacquer. In EU profile lines, material acceptance is reviewed against EN 12608 for profile material consistency and ISO 4892-2 for artificial weathering; North American specifications typically reference the applicable ASTM profile standard but retain the same xenon-arc weathering logic. Coextrusion tools are fed by a separate 25–35 mm single-screw capstock extruder running at 220–240 °C, while the main substrate extruder is kept within the PVC or ABS supplier’s process window. The capstock layer is metered to 0.3–0.5 mm on a profile wall of 2.0–2.5 mm, but die pre-land gap and draw-down ratio determine the final thickness more than pellet formula. Multiple gate locations are used in injection-molded profile connectors and end caps because long flow lengths orient the surface skin; orientation-induced stress then combines with solar UV to initiate micro-cracking at flow-weld lines. Shifting the weld line to a non-visible corner by adding a second or third gate reduces this failure mode. Terminal product forms include window lineals, glazing beads, brickmould covers, and coextruded sash accessories.

On agricultural assembly lines, off-highway fender extenders and combine side shields are produced as large injection-molded panels in which the flow path frequently exceeds 900 mm and the shot volume exceeds 2500 cm³. Sequential valve gating is preferred because it controls knit-line displacement and prevents gas entrapment at the end-of-fill areas observed on single-sprue tools. In this application, DIALAC ASA MAX40 is typically used as supplied and is not compounded on the floor; if reprocessed material is introduced, most off-highway processors validate regrind loops at 10–20 wt% only after low-temperature impact retention is confirmed on production-scale parts. Compliance documentation is organized around ISO 4892-2 or SAE J2527 for UV exposure, with chemical resistance screening conducted according to ASTM D543 against diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, and common crop-protection products. Mold temperature uniformity is a known bottleneck: differential cooling greater than 10 °C across a fender tool causes bowing that cannot be corrected by post-molding fixturing alone. Terminal products include tractor fender extensions, combine side shields, UTV front fascia panels, and engine-bay top covers for compact agricultural equipment.

When PC Content Above 40 wt% Is Added for Thin-Wall Roof Antenna Housing

When the PC fraction is raised in a PC/ASA blend containing DIALAC ASA MAX40, the target application is usually a thin-wall exterior roof component such as a shark-fin antenna cover, roof rack end cap, or satellite antenna housing. The PC fraction raises heat distortion and Vicat softening temperature, but it also raises melt temperature requirements into the 270–280 °C range; the ASA phase begins to show thermal yellowing above 260 °C when residence time is not controlled. Compounding is performed on a twin-screw extruder with L/D 32–40, vacuum venting at -0.08 MPa, and screw speed selected to keep specific mechanical energy below the level that degrades the acrylic ester rubber particle size distribution. Blending ratios are not fixed by the ASA supplier; industrial PC/ASA alloys for roof parts commonly run 30–50 wt% PC, but the exact ratio is driven by the OEM heat-aging protocol and low-temperature impact threshold. In the absence of published data for this exact DIALAC ASA MAX40 blend configuration, tool-specific validation on a production-scale injection unit is required. OEM weathering acceptance follows SAE J2527; heat resistance is measured by ISO 306 Vicat and ISO 75-1/-2 HDT. The terminal parts are injection-molded with clamp force sufficient to keep cavity pressure stable; packing profiles are shortened to prevent gate blush on the thin 2.0–2.5 mm wall stock.

Cooling Channel Balance and Low-Temperature Impact Retention in Caravan Exterior Panels

Large-format caravan locker doors present a cooling-dominated warpage problem that is not solved by post-molding fixturing alone. The tools exceed 0.5 m² in cavity area, and wall thickness is held at 3–4 mm to meet impact and dimensional requirements. The governing material standards are ISO 4892-2 for UV exposure and ISO 179-1 Charpy notched impact at -30 °C; the finished exterior parts must also satisfy EU 2011/65/EU RoHS and REACH Article 33 communication obligations. Differential shrinkage is the main production defect: when mold surface temperature varies by more than 5 °C between the center and edge of a flat panel, warpage emerges after demolding. Conformal cooling circuits and separate mold temperature controllers are specified for this class of tool. Residual moisture control at 0.02 wt% is more critical for these large flat panels than for small automotive parts because splay expands along flow fronts. Melt temperature is kept at 240–260 °C, and screw rotation is reduced for large shot sizes to avoid shear heating above the setpoint. Terminal product forms include caravan locker door shells, rear air-conditioner shrouds, wheel arch spats, and external battery-compartment covers.

The Hot-Runner Dead Spot Mechanism Precedes Outdoor Weathering Qualification

For outdoor electrical enclosures, hot-runner tooling is often specified because gate vestige on the front face is unacceptable. DIALAC ASA MAX40 is selected where the polymer must survive solar load, rain exposure, and installation impact without paint delamination. Under UL 746C, outdoor-use plastics are assessed for UV, water exposure, and thermal aging before the enclosure can carry the relevant UR recognition; the grade-specific UL yellow card must be checked against the application’s minimum relative thermal index. Processing for these enclosures often uses hot-runner direct gating; however, hot-runner dead spots are the dominant source of black specks and gloss variation when color changes are made on the same manifold. Hot-runner setpoints are limited to 250–260 °C, and color-change protocols require purging with a filled grade to mechanically scrub dead zones. A regrind fraction of 5–10 wt% is common in black or dark-gray enclosures, but lot-level documentation is required because of outdoor UV exposure; unreported regrind composition shifts flow length and low-temperature impact. Terminal products include outdoor telecommunications cabinets, PV inverter enclosures, junction box covers, and charging-station housing trim.
