    Application of Techno-UMG DIALAC® ASA E359B

Tooling for cowl vent grilles previously cut for painted ABS can be used with ASA E359B only if draft angles and gate dimensions are revalidated for a higher melt viscosity and a wider solidification range. The material is pre-dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of −35 °C at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h, targeting residual moisture below <0.05%; loading hoppers exposed to ambient relative humidity above 60% for more than 4 h must be re-dried. Injection moulding is performed on a three-zone screw with an L/D ratio of 20:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.2:1. A nozzle temperature of 240 °C to 250 °C and a mould temperature of 60 °C to 70 °C are maintained; the barrel profile is set from 220 °C near the feed throat to 245 °C at the metering zone. For a nominal wall thickness of 2.5 mm to 3.0 mm, the tab gate is positioned at a non-visible lower edge, with a gate thickness of 60% to 70% of the part wall and a land length not exceeding 1.0 mm. Hold pressure is applied until gate freeze, then the part is cooled in the cavity to a demoulding temperature below 85 °C. Up to 20% clean in-house regrind from the same production lot is metered gravimetrically with virgin pellets. Weathering acceptance for unpainted cowl vent grilles is based on SAE J2527:2017 or ISO 4892-2:2013 at 1,500 kJ/m²; colour change is evaluated to ISO 105-A02 grey scale ≥ 4, and surface chalking is assessed visually after water spray. Tensile yield stress is determined to ISO 527-2:2012; Charpy notched impact to ISO 179-1:2010 at 23 °C and −30 °C; heat deflection temperature to ISO 75-2:2013 method A at 1.8 MPa. Melt residence time above 250 °C must not exceed 8 min, and shutdown purges should avoid polyethylene or uncompatibilized polypropylene carriers because residual incompatible fractions reduce Charpy notched impact and create visible delamination at the gate area.

Why Coextruded Window Lineals Shift Melt Pressure on Single-Screw Capstock Extruders?

Coextruded rigid PVC window lineals and fascia boards can be capped with a 0.15 mm to 0.30 mm layer of DIALAC ASA E359B through a feedblock coextrusion die, while the PVC substrate remains 1.2 mm to 1.8 mm thick. On a production line with a counter-rotating twin-screw main extruder of 55 mm to 60 mm diameter and a capstock single-screw extruder of 25 mm to 30 mm diameter with an L/D of 30:1, the ASA melt temperature is held at 205 °C to 215 °C to match the PVC melt temperature of 180 °C to 190 °C. Melt-pressure variation in the capstock extruder is a direct process signal: a rising head pressure above the set point indicates insufficient melting or excessive viscosity mismatch; a falling head pressure after screw-speed correction often precedes layer-thickness fluctuation. A melt pump between the capstock extruder and the feedblock stabilises output, and the ASA layer thickness is controlled gravimetrically as a mass-throughput ratio rather than by screw speed alone. The flat die land length is maintained at 15:1 to 18:1 to avoid melt fracture and to prevent streaking on the cap surface. Vacuum calibration with cooling water at 15 °C to 20 °C follows the die; water flow is balanced across profile chambers to avoid corner thinning of the ASA layer. Adhesion to the PVC substrate is verified by peel testing to DIN 53357-A or equivalent; published peel-strength data for E359B capstock on this specific substrate configuration is limited and should be generated on the line before a run, because interfacial failure appears at the ASA/PVC boundary before the bulk layer deforms. Colour retention and chalking are assessed to ISO 4892-2:2013 with 2,000 kJ/m² minimum and ISO 105-A02 grey scale ≥ 4. The finished window lineal, fascia board, or soffit trim is produced to EN 12608-1 profile dimensional tolerances. When the capstock layer falls below 0.12 mm, UV screening of the PVC substrate becomes insufficient and colour shift accelerates.

Because outdoor junction cabinets are frequently installed in direct sun at altitudes above 2,000 m, the surface temperature of a dark grey enclosure can exceed 80 °C. Moulded housings from ASA E359B for telecommunications and solar-inverter enclosures are processed in a large-tie-bar injection moulding machine with sequential valve-gate hot runner control; the valve-gate opening sequence is set to move the weld line away from the gasket groove. Melt temperature at the nozzle is 240 °C to 250 °C, mould temperature is 60 °C, and the hot-runner manifold is held within 235 °C to 245 °C. For a wall thickness of 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm, hold pressure is applied long enough to eliminate sink marks around moulded-in brass inserts. The insert bosses are designed with a minimum corner radius of 0.5 mm to reduce stress concentration during thermal cycling from −40 °C to 80 °C. Material feeding uses 100% virgin ASA E359B or a blend with 15% clean in-house regrind, gravimetrically dosed. Outdoor suitability is evaluated to UL 746C f1 for UV and water exposure; the grade-specific Yellow Card must be retained for the exact color and regrind level, because f1 testing is compound- and colour-specific. Flammability classification is UL 94 HB at the minimum wall thickness used in production. Enclosure ingress protection is verified to IEC 60529 IP55 using the gasketed lid and stainless-steel hinge hardware; structural impact resistance is measured to ISO 179-1:2010 at −30 °C on plaques cut from the enclosure wall. The finished product is used as a junction cabinet or solar combiner housing without a paint line, which removes a solvent-based topcoat and its related VOC emissions. Contact with aggressive aromatic hydrocarbons or strong alkaline cleaning agents at elevated temperature is not recommended; cleaning validation should use neutral pH detergent solutions instead.

High-UV Agricultural Valve Boxes and Flexural Creep Resistance

Filter bodies and valve boxes for drip-irrigation networks are injection moulded from ASA E359B where the comparison material is impact-modified polypropylene that requires additional UV stabilization or shows greater warpage after hot summer exposure. The melt is processed at 230 °C to 250 °C with a mould temperature of 60 °C, using vented injection moulding tools to prevent gas burns at rib intersections. Wall thickness is kept at 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm, with ribs not exceeding 60% of the nominal wall to avoid sink marks. Drying is performed at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h to below <0.05% moisture. Colour is a production-controlled black or grey masterbatch based on an ASA carrier; the masterbatch addition is 2 wt% to 3 wt% and is not replaced with polyolefin-based universal masterbatch because comonomer mismatch reduces notched impact strength. Flexural modulus is measured to ISO 178:2019 at 23 °C and after 1,000 h water immersion at 23 °C; the specification requires no more than 15% reduction in flexural modulus after immersion. Charpy notched impact is determined to ISO 179-1:2010 at 23 °C and −30 °C. Heat deflection temperature is measured to ISO 75-2:2013 method A at 1.8 MPa. Weathering resistance is checked to ISO 4892-2:2013 for 2,000 kJ/m² with colour change to ISO 105-A02 grey scale ≥ 4; surface cracking after weathering is inspected under 10× magnification. The moulded part operates in contact with drip-irrigation water containing phosphate fertilizer residues and calcium chloride; ASA E359B is resistant to these dilute salt solutions, but concentrated nitric acid, methyl ethyl ketone, and methylene chloride must be kept out of the production and end-use environment because they induce stress cracking at moulded-in metal inserts.

Initial processing boundary conditions for DIALAC ASA E359B are summarised below by process route; these values are starting-point parameters derived from industrial ASA practice and must be checked against the current grade-specific technical datasheet.

Sheet extrusion of ASA E359B for spa cabinet panels requires a flat die with a flexible lip and a vertical three-roll polishing stack. Pellets are dried at 80 °C to 85 °C for 3 h to 4 h to below <0.05% residual moisture; the desiccant dryer is operated with a dew point of −35 °C. The single-screw sheet extruder has a screw diameter of 75 mm to 90 mm, an L/D of 32:1, and a barrier mixing section. Melt temperature at the die is 220 °C to 240 °C. The sheet is calendered on a vertical three-roll stack with a top roll temperature of 80 °C to 90 °C, a middle roll temperature of 60 °C to 70 °C, and a bottom roll temperature of 40 °C to 50 °C; roll gap is set to produce sheet thickness from 3.0 mm to 5.0 mm. Thermoforming of the spa panel is carried out on a vacuum-forming machine with plug assist, using a sheet surface temperature of 150 °C to 170 °C; the male mould temperature is held at 40 °C to 60 °C. Sheet edge trim and rejected formed parts are ground and added back at up to 20 wt% with virgin pellets, but only after drying the regrind to the same moisture specification. The formed part is routed on a CNC trimming centre with carbide tooling to produce the final cabinet skirt or access door. Impact strength is measured to ASTM D256-10 or ISO 179-1:2010 at 23 °C; Vicat softening temperature is measured to ISO 306:2022 method B50. Weathering of the cabinet panel is assessed to ISO 4892-2:2013 for 1,500 kJ/m² with colour change to ISO 105-A02 grey scale ≥ 4. The material is not recommended for continuous immersion in hot water above 60 °C with free chlorine above 2 ppm; for those conditions a different polymer selection is required because hydrolytic attack at the acrylate comonomer will reduce gloss and surface hardness before bulk mechanical failure occurs.

When Marine Hatch Frames Are Moulded from ASA E359B Instead of Aluminium

Marine deck hatch frames and cockpit locker covers moulded in ASA E359B replace powder-coated aluminium where galvanic corrosion at stainless-steel fasteners and chipping of the coating create maintenance costs. Pre-drying is set at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h to below <0.05% moisture, and the material is injection moulded with a melt temperature of 240 °C to 250 °C and a mould temperature of 60 °C. Wall thickness is maintained between 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm; gate location is shifted to the underside edge and away from visible deck surfaces to avoid flow marks. The polymer is processed at a clamp force consistent with the projected area and a cavity pressure of 35 MPa to 50 MPa; hold-pressure profile is optimised by short-shot studies. Hinge inserts are 316 stainless steel, not zinc-plated steel, because zinc plating is sacrificial and degrades under salt spray. The moulded part is tested to ISO 9227:2017 neutral salt spray for 500 h; after salt spray, Charpy notched impact is measured to ISO 179-1:2010 at −30 °C and compared with unexposed plaques. UV exposure is performed to ISO 4892-2:2013 with 2,000 kJ/m²; tensile property retention is evaluated to ISO 527-2:2012 and colour change to ISO 105-A02 grey scale ≥ 4. The resin is suitable for deck hatch frames, locker covers, and instrument console surrounds, but it is not specified for through-hull fittings or submerged structural parts, where water absorption and creep under load are design-limiting. Avoid continuous contact with acetone, toluene, or ester-based cleaners; cleaning with aliphatic naphtha or mild detergent is acceptable.

Solar Cable Trough Extrusion Requires Low-Temperature Impact Retention at −30 °C

For photovoltaic cable management in ground-mount arrays, extruded ASA E359B trough sections replace powder-coated aluminium where earthing and corrosion drive total installed cost. The profile extrusion line uses a single-screw extruder with a grooved feed section, screw diameter 45 mm to 60 mm, and L/D of 30:1 to 33:1. Melt temperature is kept at 220 °C to 230 °C; the die is a plate die with a land length of 10:1 to 14:1 and a vacuum sizing tank with cooling water at 15 °C to 20 °C. Wall thickness is 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm, and the trough width-to-depth ratio is controlled to avoid die swell distortion at the open channel edges. Pellets are dried to below <0.05% moisture at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h. No regrind is used where the trough is supplied under a UL-recognised compound listing unless specifically included in the Yellow Card, because outdoor electrical applications are audited against the exact compound and recycled content. Horizontal burn is classified to UL 94 HB and ASTM D635; outdoor suitability is evaluated according to UL 746C f1 for UV and water exposure. Low-temperature impact retention is determined to ISO 179-1:2010 at −30 °C; the specification is set by the cable-management standard or project engineering brief, not by the resin supplier, because local snow and wind loads differ. The finished extruded trough is exported under RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH 1907/2006 documentation, with supplier declarations referenced to the E359B lot number. Continuous service above 70 °C under mechanical load is not recommended without a creep test to ISO 899-1:2018, because the acrylate-modified styrene matrix loses flexural modulus as it approaches its HDT.
