    Application of Techno-UMG DIALAC® AES SK30

In unpainted exterior trim applications, DIALAC AES SK30 is specified where conventional ABS failure is not primarily mechanical but photo-oxidative: the 1,3-butadiene unsaturation in ABS rubber absorbs UV energy, generates hydroperoxides, and produces surface chalking, micro-cracking, and gloss collapse before the thermoplastic matrix itself loses tensile strength. For SK30, the rubber modifier is based on a saturated ethylene-propylene main chain, which retards the propagation of photo-oxidative radicals and therefore reduces weather-driven surface degradation. Moulded cowl vent grilles, mirror housings, and front spoiler inserts must be dried to a residual moisture level of 0.05 wt% according to ISO 15512 method B before plasticating. A desiccant-bed dryer with a dew point no higher than −30°C and a hopper temperature of 80°C for 3–4 h is required when relative humidity exceeds 60%. Open storage of dry pellets should not exceed 30 min at 23°C and 65% RH; beyond that, moisture re-absorption above 0.08 wt% produces splay, gate blush, and weld-line delamination. Melt temperature measured at the nozzle is normally kept between 220°C and 250°C. Sustained stock temperatures above 270°C initiate thermal chain scission in the rubber phase and produce brown streaking and a drop in 60° gloss retention. Mould temperature is set between 40°C and 80°C, with the lower half of the range producing the low-gloss surface commonly accepted for exterior grained textures and the upper half improving weld-line strength and sink-mark recovery. Gates smaller than 0.8 mm diameter raise melt-front shear rates beyond 25,000 s⁻¹ in thin-wall grilles and can cause local thermal degradation. Weld lines in bars with hole patterns must be evaluated by ISO 180/A at −30°C, because low-temperature impact is the limiting mechanical property after weathering. Xenon arc exposure per SAE J2527 at 2,500–3,000 kJ/m² and 0.55 W/m² at 340 nm is the standard exterior-trim severity window; gloss retention measured to ISO 2813 and colour difference measured to ISO 11664-4 are the pass/fail parameters. Chemical resistance to windshield washer fluid, 50 vol% isopropanol, and dilute calcium chloride road de-icers should be confirmed by immersion per ISO 175 on stressed specimens at 1% strain. Published data for the exact SK30 masterbatch and pigment package under all listed fluids is limited; OEM validation usually includes bespoke fluid immersion at 70°C for 24 h.

What Determines Odour and Fogging Compliance in Sun-Exposed Instrument Panel Retainers?

Because interior components beneath a sloped windscreen can reach skin temperatures above 100°C during summer soak, the VOC and fogging behaviour of the moulded polymer is governed by the thermal stability of rubber-phase breakdown products rather than by initial pellet odour. DIALAC AES SK30 in sun-exposed instrument panel retainers, demister ducts, and speaker grilles requires a drying regime of 80°C for 3–4 h because residual moisture above 0.05 wt% promotes hydrolysis of coupling agents and increases the free monomer fraction detected in VDA 278 thermal desorption analysis. Melt temperature for interior parts is preferably restricted to 220–240°C; every increment above 250°C raises the concentration of low-molecular-weight carbonyl compounds that drive DIN 75201-B condensation-fogging deposits. Production-scale trials on multicavity hot-runner tools show that valve-gated systems reduce cold-sprue regrind content to below 10 wt%, preventing repeated thermal cycles from amplifying odour-active species. Regrind dosage above 20 wt% without a 1,200 ppm primary antioxidant masterbatch should be avoided in parts tested against VDA 270/B3 odour criteria. Moulded specimens of 3 mm thickness are aged at 100°C for 16 h in DIN 75201-B; gravimetric fogging values above the OEM acceptance limit are often traced to mould-release agents, not the AES base resin, so external mould releases must be excluded from the process. Snap-fit retention under heat and vibration is evaluated by ISO 527-2 tensile yield strength and ISO 180/A notched Izod impact at −30°C, because the same rubber structure that gives AES its weathering resistance influences low-temperature ductility. Boss design requires a minimum outside diameter to thread engagement depth ratio of 2.0:1 to prevent hoop stress cracking during screw insertion, particularly when the part is moulded at the lower mould-temperature boundary of 40°C. If high-gloss piano black interior trim is produced, a second moulding step with an in-mould film or two-component clearcoat may be needed, because the material alone does not provide the 60° gloss above 90 GU required for decorative surfaces; the maximum gloss level for this grade should be confirmed with ISO 2813 on a polished tool. Published data for the exact SK30 colour masterbatch under through-glass sunlight equivalent ISO 4892-2 cycles are grade-dependent.

Outdoor Meter Enclosure Failure Modes Linked to UV Chalking and Creep

Enclosure failures on outdoor meter boxes are seldom immediate mechanical fractures; they are slow reductions in impact strength after 2,000–3,000 h of UV exposure, combined with creep relaxation at screw bosses that carry a continuous gasket compression load. DIALAC AES SK30 is suitable for enclosure front covers and base boxes moulded in dark grey or RAL 7016 because the saturated EPDM rubber maintains elongation and impact retention longer than unmodified butadiene-based ABS under UL 746C f1 UV exposure and ASTM G155 xenon cycles. Moulded-in colour avoids secondary painting and eliminates paint adhesion as a chalking failure mode, but the pigment package must be UV-stabilised; an unstabilised carbon black loading below 0.5 wt% cannot provide surface protection alone. Dimensional control under load is verified by ISO 899-2 flexural creep modulus after 1,000 h at 60°C. The limiting processing constraint is not mould filling but creep in thin ribs: rib thickness below 0.8 mm at a boss outer diameter of 7.0 mm produces localised strain during thread-forming screw insertion and should be redesigned to a root thickness of at least 1.2 mm for annual re-tightening. Flammability is determined on 1.5 mm plaques per UL 94 HB; specific flame-retardant AES grades, not generic SK30, are required where UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm is specified. Moisture conditioning before moulding follows the same 0.05 wt% target, because residual moisture in thick-walled enclosure parts above 2.5 mm section causes internal voids that compromise IEC 60529 IP65 gasket seating at parting-line grooves. Injection speed is reduced on thick-walled covers to avoid jetting; a melt-front velocity of 200–400 mm/s through fan gates is typical on two-cavity tools with 1,200 kN clamp force. Corrosion of mould steel is not a known issue with AES, but long residence times above 250°C can cause acetic acid release from some colour masterbatch carriers and should be avoided in hot-runner drops with unswept dead zones.

When a caravan side marker panel is coextruded as a 150–250 µm AES cap layer over a 3 mm ABS substrate, the processing objective shifts from mechanical property generation to retention of the cap layer integrity during thermoforming. Sheet extrusion of the SK30 cap layer is performed with a barrier screw of 30:1 L/D and a melt temperature of 220–240°C; the coextruded ABS melt is delivered at 230°C through a feedblock manifold with no tie resin because the two phases interdiffuse at the boundary. Thermoforming into deep-draw caravan side panels uses an aluminium plug assist and zoned ceramic IR heaters to bring the sheet surface to 150–180°C; the lower limit avoids cold forming stress whitening, and the upper limit prevents blistering of the AES cap layer from residual moisture in the ABS substrate. Moisture control must cover both layers: the ABS substrate requires drying to 0.06 wt% moisture and the SK30 cap layer to 0.05 wt% before extrusion. Draw ratios above 1.5:1 reduce the cap thickness at corners to below 80 µm, causing uneven gloss and reduced weather resistance; plug-assist acceleration is therefore set to maintain a wall thickness distribution within ±15% of nominal at the formed part corners. After forming, trimming with carbide tools at 20,000 rpm minimises micro-cracks that can propagate into the weathered surface. Outdoor weathering of the formed composite is assessed by ISO 4892-2 with a filtered xenon arc at 0.51 W/m² and 340 nm; gloss retention at 60° per ISO 2813 is the primary acceptance criterion. Failure modes observed in production include delamination at the cap-substrate interface when melt temperatures are below 220°C and surface pinholes when the substrate moisture exceeds 0.08 wt%. The grade designation SK30 should not be substituted for a high-melt-strength thermoforming grade when draw ratios exceed 2.0:1 unless the extruder is equipped with a separate cooling stack and precision winding control.

When Garden Equipment Housings Must Resist Fuel Splash and Sub-Zero Impact

For hand-held garden power tool housings, ultraviolet stability alone is insufficient because the part is subject to repetitive mechanical shock, occasional fuel spillage, and low-temperature impact during winter storage. DIALAC AES SK30 can be injection moulded into blower shrouds, grass trimmer covers, and engine cowls where ABS would crack after one or two outdoor seasons. The primary mechanical acceptance is not tensile yield but notched Izod impact at −30°C per ISO 180/A; samples should be cut from the weld line and from the gate area because flow-induced rubber orientation creates anisotropy of up to 30% in impact strength. Chemical resistance to splash-level fuel exposure is bounded: short-term contact with gasoline containing up to 10 vol% ethanol is generally acceptable on unstressed surfaces, but continuous immersion in E85 or aromatic solvents must not be assumed; validation under 1% flexural strain per ISO 175 is required. Mould fill analysis for thin-wall blower shrouds should target a melt-front velocity below 600 mm/s; higher speeds generate shear heating above 250°C at gate lands and may create visible brown streaks on the surface of the unpainted part. A mould temperature of 50–60°C balances stress relaxation, low-shrinkage texture replication, and cooling time; cooling time increases disproportionately below 40°C because the low thermal conductivity of AES extends the ejection plateau. Bosses receiving self-tapping screws are the main production failure site: hoop stress cracking is minimised with an outside diameter to pilot hole diameter ratio of 2.5:1 or larger, and the use of low-temperature impact stabilised grades should not excuse sharp internal radii below 0.5 mm. Ultraviolet resistance is checked after 1,000 h of ISO 4892-2 xenon exposure; colour shift is measured with ISO 11664-4, and gloss retention with ISO 2813. Published data for exact SK30 colourfastness in bright orange or yellow masterbatches is limited, so exterior pigment packages should be pre-certified for 2,000 kJ/m² minimum xenon exposure through moulded plaques.

Under sustained outdoor exposure on highway delineators, temporary traffic management panels, and bollard shells, the service requirement is a combination of UV colour retention, low-temperature impact after ageing, and resistance to repeated pressure-washing, not a single maximum load case. DIALAC AES SK30 parts in this segment are usually thick-walled, moulded-in stationary road furniture that receives minimal maintenance; failure starts at mounting holes and hinge pins where tensile creep and weathering combine. Moulded specimens are tested by ISO 180/A after 1,000 h of ISO 4892-2 accelerated weathering to confirm that impact retention remains above the end-user acceptance floor. Because road sign boards and bollards are often specified in red, yellow, or white, the pigment grade must be matched to the UV stabiliser package; titanium dioxide loadings of 3–5 wt% in white parts act as a UV screen but accelerate chalking if surface resin is degraded, so routine 60° gloss retention checks per ISO 2813 are used during production lot release. Chemical resistance to pressure-washer detergents is assessed by ISO 175 at 40°C for 72 h; alkaline detergent concentrates above pH 10 may micro-crack stressed hinge areas unless the part is post-mould annealed. Annealing for 2 h at 85°C reduces moulded-in stress and lowers the incidence of environmental stress cracking at metal insert overmoulds, but it also shrinks the part by 0.1–0.3%, requiring tool compensation. For parts moulded with metal hinges, insert temperature must be held at 80–100°C before overmoulding to prevent a cold polymer skin that cracks under first-load torque. The material enters the road-furniture segment only when the full compliance chain includes EN 12899 for fixed road signs or national equivalents; SK30 itself provides the thermoplastic body, not the retroreflective sheeting, whose adhesive compatibility must be tested by the converter. Published data for adhesive bonding of pressure-sensitive retroreflective sheet to AES SK30 is limited; a primer or surface oxidation treatment is typically evaluated by ISO 4624 pull-off testing after 72 h water immersion.
