    Application of Techno-UMG DIALAC® AES SE40

Unpainted cowl vent grilles, wiper motor covers, and scuttle panels produced from Techno-UMG DIALAC AES SE40 are typically approved against OEM weathering specifications that combine xenon-arc exposure, thermal cycling, and stone-chip simulation. The material is fed through a desiccant hopper set to 80 °C with a residence time of 4 h and a supply-air dew point no higher than −30 °C. Moisture content at the screw is maintained below 0.02 wt% as measured by ISO 15512 Method B. Barrel zones from feed to nozzle are profiled at 190 °C, 210 °C, 220 °C, and 225 °C; melt temperature is kept at 220–240 °C to prevent oxidation of the EPDM phase. Injection speed is set in the mid range to avoid free-jetting and splay from jetting shear at gates. Holding pressure is applied at 50–70 MPa for thin-wall sections between 2.0 mm and 2.8 mm, with screw cushion controlled at 3–5 mm. Mold temperature is maintained at 40–60 °C for a balance between gloss and cycle time. The black pigmentation is achieved with 2–4 wt% pre-dried carbon black masterbatch; higher loadings above 5 wt% reduce flow length and raise gate blush tendency. Weatherability acceptance commonly references SAE J2527 with a total radiant exposure of 2,500 kJ/m² at an irradiance of 0.55 W/m²/nm at 340 nm; the surface must show no cracking, no chalking, and a colour deviation ΔE of no more than 2.5 under CIE L*a*b* conditions. Regrind use in this unpainted exterior class is limited to 15–20 wt% because the outdoor impact retention margin is reduced at weld lines and near snap-fit bosses.

Why Do Mirror Housing Molders Observe Gate Blush When Switching From ASA to AES?

The transition from an ASA grade to DIALAC AES SE40 for exterior mirror shells and door handle covers introduces different melt elasticity because the ethylene-propylene rubber phase in AES has different shear sensitivity than acrylate rubber in ASA. Molders running 3,000–5,000 kN hydraulic injection machines often observe that the ribbed inner structure near the mirror pivot creates a dead zone if the screw is operated with a high back pressure above 10 MPa. Low-shear sequential valve gating is used to place the weld line along the lower edge of the housing rather than across the visible Class-A surface. The melt temperature is limited to 230 °C at the nozzle for black and dark-grey formulations; light grey and white formulations are processed 5–10 °C lower to reduce yellowing. Mold temperature is set asymmetrically: 50–60 °C on the cavity side to control gloss and 35–40 °C on the core side to shorten cycle time without differential warpage. Chemical resistance validation for mirror housings typically includes immersion in 10 wt% sodium chloride solution at 23 °C for 24 h and intermittent contact with alkaline car-wash detergent at pH 9–10 per ISO 2812-1. No cracking at bosses is acceptable after 500 h of xenon-arc exposure. The part must retain at least 80 % of its initial notched Izod after weathering; if the part is painted, adhesion is measured by ISO 2409 cross-cut with a rating of 0–1. The use of 3 wt% UV-stabilised color masterbatch is typical, but masterbatch containing calcium carbonate above 1 wt% should be avoided because it creates surface hazing at the gate area.

If the Application Envelope Includes Fuel, Diesel, and Field Chemical Contact

Tractor instrument surrounds, seed meter housings, and pump cowls molded from SE40 are evaluated differently from automotive trim because the material must survive intermittent contact with diesel, hydraulic oil, and crop-protection spray carriers. In such applications the part geometry normally maintains a nominal wall of 2.5–3.5 mm and all fastener bosses carry a minimum root radius of 0.5 mm to reduce chemical stress cracking. Testing to ISO 175 is performed with representative fluids: diesel fuel, SAE 10W-30 oil, and a 10 wt% aqueous urea solution. The EPDM rubber phase in AES absorbs aliphatic hydrocarbons; immersion in diesel for 24 h at 23 °C may produce reversible softening and a temporary loss of tensile modulus, while continuous immersion beyond 72 h is not recommended without component validation. Published data for this specific configuration under continuous fuel immersion is limited; molder validation must include notched Izod after preconditioning, not only visual inspection. The processing setup uses a melt temperature of 225–235 °C and a mold temperature of 30–50 °C. A lower mold temperature reduces cycle time but increases moulded-in stress near inserts. Hinged and snap-fit features are designed with deflection stress below 15 MPa under worst-case tolerance stack to limit crazing. UV protection is validated separately using ASTM G154 cycle 1 for 1,000 h, with no visible surface microcracking at 10× magnification. Addition of hindered amine light stabilizer masterbatch is allowed at 0.5–1.0 wt%, but it must be free of halogenated carrier resins to avoid tool corrosion.

Photovoltaic junction boxes and low-voltage outdoor enclosures produced from DIALAC AES SE40 are qualified on the basis of long-term dimensional stability, UV resistance, and creep behaviour rather than Class-A surface appearance. For enclosure covers with nominal dimensions above 200 mm, flatness after conditioning at 80 °C for 24 h is critical because polycarbonate and glass-filled PA alternatives show higher or more anisotropic post-mold shrinkage. Mould shrinkage for unfilled AES is typically in the 0.5–0.7 % range, and a holding pressure of 60–80 MPa is maintained for 8–12 s to minimise sink at bosses. The tool is designed with discrete water channels on the fixed and moving sides to hold a temperature differential no greater than 10 °C across the cavity. Weathering validation for outdoor electrical enclosures commonly invokes ISO 4892-2 with a 0.51 W/m²/nm irradiance at 340 nm and a black standard temperature of 65 °C for 1,500 h. The evaluation includes impact retention per ISO 179-1 and visual assessment for chalking under ISO 4628-6. Enclosures exposed to rain and dust are also tested to IEC 60529 for IP65 or IP66, where weld-line locations at gasket grooves determine leakage. Before specifying this grade in electrical applications, the molder must confirm the UL 94 classification and Relative Thermal Index from the supplier datasheet because neat AES grades are not automatically flame-retarded; if a V-0 or 5VA requirement exists, the enclosure must be revalidated with the appropriate FR-ABS or FR-PC/ABS grade. The material is not recommended for continuous operating temperatures above 80 °C unless creep rupture data based on ISO 899-2 has been reviewed for the specific boss loading.

Weathering Validation Windows for Marine Deck Hatches, RV Vent Covers, and Outdoor Furniture

Marine deck hatches, RV vent covers, and outdoor furniture components add salt-spray, high-humidity, and large-area flatness constraints to the standard AES weatherability envelope. These parts are typically moulded in dark grey, black, or beige; light colours are processed with a melt temperature at the lower end of the 220–230 °C range to prevent yellowing. The tool surface is specified as VDI 24–27 on visible surfaces to create a low-gloss, scratch-tolerant finish without the use of paint. Drying before molding uses 80 °C for 4–6 h in a desiccant dryer; if the ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, the hopper feeder must be sealed and the drying time extended by 1 h. Weathering validation combines ASTM G154 cycle 4 for 1,000 h with a neutral salt-spray test per ISO 9227 for 480 h. After salt-spray, notched Izod retention is measured at 23 °C and −10 °C; a drop greater than 20 % is treated as a failure because salt crystallisation at microcracks acts as a stress concentrator. The hardware interface uses brass inserts with a minimum surrounding boss wall of 2.5 mm and a hot-knife or ultrasonic insertion process; cold-press insertion is excluded because it initiates radial cracks. For outdoor furniture, flatness of large seat slats after 48 h post-mould conditioning is measured on a granite surface plate; specification is 0.8 mm maximum bow over a 500 mm span. The use of recycled AES in this segment is generally limited to 10 wt% from clean sprues and runners, because outdoor UV performance depends on stabiliser concentration in the skin layer.

Low-Temperature Impact Retention Is Governed by EPDM Domain Morphology

Snowmobile air intake shrouds, personal watercraft storage lids, and portable cooler housings made from SE40 rely on the low-temperature ductility of the ethylene-propylene rubber phase. The notched Izod target for these applications is frequently set at 8–12 kJ/m² at −30 °C according to ISO 180/1A, with a flexural modulus near 1,800–2,200 MPa to maintain structural stiffness at temperature. These values depend on the moulded part's thermal history: excessive melt temperature above 250 °C or residence time beyond 8 min can coarsen the rubber domains and reduce low-temperature impact without a corresponding change in melt flow index. The injection machine is therefore specified with a 20:1 to 24:1 L/D screw and a low back pressure of 2–5 MPa to limit shear heating. Molders use a reverse barrel profile: 230 °C at the feed, 220 °C at the compression and metering zones, and 215 °C at the nozzle, which reduces thermal history while preserving melt pressure. Mold temperature is held at 30–50 °C, but impact-critical ribs and bosses are cooled through a separate circuit to maintain a surface temperature below 70 °C at ejection. Snaps and latches require a gate location that avoids weld lines in the high-stress hook area; if this cannot be achieved, the use of two gates must be validated by low-temperature snap-fit cycling rather than by tensile testing alone. For parts operating below −20 °C, regrind is restricted to 10–15 wt% because repeated processing reduces the molecular weight of the styrenic phase and shifts the ductile-brittle transition. The material's weather resistance also permits long-term outdoor storage of these moulded components without the surface embrittlement seen in general-purpose ABS.
