Application of SSTPC (Sinopec SABIC Tianjin) HDPE HD01

When a packager moves from a standard non-hazardous container to a UN 3H1 tight-head jerrican for Class 3 flammable liquids, the design qualification is driven by the test sequence in the UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.1.5.3 drop test, 6.1.5.4 leakproofness test, 6.1.5.5 internal hydraulic pressure test, and 6.1.5.6 stacking test, not by a single material specification. For Sinopec SABIC Tianjin HDPE HD01, extrusion blow molding of 10 L to 30 L tight-head jerricans is performed on a single-screw extruder with 90 mm screw diameter and 30:1 L/D, equipped with a grooved feed sleeve and an accumulator head. Melt temperature is kept between 180 °C and 205 °C, with blow pressure at 0.7–0.9 MPa and mold temperature between 12 °C and 18 °C. Axial wall thickness is programmed from 0.5 mm to 4.0 mm to maintain the pinch-off and top-load zones; cycle time for a 20 L jerrican on a single-station accumulator machine is typically 45–60 s. Continuous bottle weight variation across a 20,000-unit production run is held within ±1.5% by closed-loop control of the accumulator push-out speed. Formulation for black outdoor-stored containers uses a carbon black masterbatch at 2.0–2.5 wt% and a hindered amine light stabilizer masterbatch at 0.3–0.8 wt%, while internal lubricant is limited to 0.02 wt% or lower because excessive lubrication reduces weld-line environmental stress crack resistance. The finished parts are subjected to hydraulic pressure retention at 100 kPa for 30 min, drop testing from 1.2 m at -18 °C, and stacked-load testing per the design type declaration. Terminal products include 10 L, 20 L, and 30 L tight-head jerricans, 5 L to 25 L open-top tapered pails, and inner containers for composite IBCs. Monolayer HD01 is excluded from aromatic hydrocarbon or strong chlorinated solvent service without barrier fluorination or a coextruded polyamide/EVOH layer because the permeation rate of xylene and toluene exceeds the permitted venting and loss limits in many transport cases.

What Keeps Migration Below the 10 mg/dm² Overall Limit in Edible Oil Bottles?

For edible oil and dairy alternative packaging, SSTPC HD01 is processed only after lot qualification against EU 10/2011, 21 CFR 177.1520, and GB 4806.7-2016. The EU overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² using simulant D2 or its authorized substitute is the controlling threshold for oily food contact; for fatty food simulant D2 migration, the test condition is 10 days at 40 °C for long-term room-temperature storage, but published migration data for this specific HD01 configuration at 40 °C is limited, so each pigment and regrind stream requires independent verification. Formulation for food bottles is lean: white titanium dioxide masterbatch is added at 1.0–2.0 wt% in milk and dairy alternative bottles to provide light blocking, while clear or translucent edible oil bottles use no pigment or a very low tint concentrate below 0.5 wt%. Erucamide slip agent, if required for cap thread release, is held at 0.05–0.10 wt% because higher addition may create an organoleptic risk in oil contact; no recycled content is introduced unless it meets the positive-list and contamination requirements of EU 10/2011 Article 6 and applicable 21 CFR food-contact recycled resin provisions. Production is run on rotary wheel or shuttle blow molding machines with 8–16 cavity molds, melt temperature 175–195 °C, mold cooling water at 8–12 °C, and blow pressure at 0.8–1.0 MPa. A 1 L edible oil bottle is commonly weight-optimized to 24–32 g with nominal sidewall 0.6–0.8 mm; a 1 L dairy alternative bottle is heavier at 28–36 g because it must maintain top load above 300 N for automated filling lines. Terminal product types include 250 mL, 500 mL, 1 L, and 2 L edible oil bottles, 250 mL–1.5 L dairy alternative bottles, and food-service condiment bottles from 125 mL to 1 L.

Within pharmaceutical solid-dose packaging, HD01 qualification is framed by USP <661.1> for plastic materials of construction, USP <661.2> for plastic packaging systems, and Ph. Eur. 3.1.3 for polyolefins. The blow molding cell is installed in an ISO Class 8 clean room, and the extrusion blow molding machine uses a 60 mm screw with 24:1 L/D and 6–12 cavity tooling. Melt temperature is limited to 175–195 °C to minimize oxidative breakdown and odor formation; mold temperature is held at 10–15 °C to stabilize bottle dimensions under high-speed parison transfer, and the cycle time for a 60 mL bottle is 8–14 s. The formulation envelope is narrower than industrial packaging: white titanium dioxide masterbatch at 1.5–2.5 wt% is the only colorant stream, and organic pigments, antistatic agents, mold release oils, and recycled material are excluded unless submitted to the full USP extractables and leachables screening program. After pigment changeovers, the system is purged with 2–5 kg of HD01 before production, and lot-release color is measured with a Delta E tolerance of ≤0.5 against the sealed master standard to prevent downstream visual inspection rejects on high-speed tablet filling lines. Closure seal integrity is maintained by holding the bottle sealing flange at 1.2–2.0 mm thickness for induction-seal liners, and moisture vapor transmission is evaluated by USP <671> methods for containers intended to hold desiccant-stopped tablets. Terminal product formats include 30 mL, 60 mL, 125 mL, 250 mL, and 500 mL round and square bottles with 38 mm or 45 mm neck finishes for oral solid dosage, effervescent tablets, and diagnostic strip packaging.

When Diesel Exhaust Fluid Purity Is Governed by ISO 22241 Handling Clauses

For automotive aftermarket fluids, the critical specification is not mechanical strength but the absence of trace ions that poison selective catalytic reduction systems. Diesel exhaust fluid packaged in HD01 containers is qualified under the ISO 22241 series, which addresses AUS 32 quality and handling; the packaging requirement is interpreted as a zero-release boundary for calcium, magnesium, and aluminum ions, making standard calcium stearate acid scavengers unacceptable in this formulation. The resin is processed neat with a carbon black masterbatch at 1.0–2.0 wt% only if the furnace black is low-leachable and the masterbatch carrier is a HDPE of the same density class. A non-ionic hindered amine light stabilizer at 0.2–0.6 wt% is used for UV protection, and total masterbatch loading is capped at 3.0 wt% to prevent dilution of the resin’s inherent ESCR. A 10 L DEF jug is extrusion blow molded on a long-stroke accumulator machine with melt temperature 180–200 °C, blow pressure 0.8–1.0 MPa, and mold temperature 10–15 °C; flash weight is controlled below 8% of part weight because heavily oxidized regrind reduces both purity and ESCR margin. Cold-climate validation includes drop testing from 1.2 m after 24 h conditioning at -30 °C, and the pinch-off tail and handle welds are sectioned to check for incomplete fusion. Terminal product types include 5 L, 10 L, and 20 L DEF jugs with tamper-evident caps, 1 L–5 L engine coolant bottles, and 500 mL–5 L windshield washer fluid containers. For extended hot-climate storage, monolayer HD01 DEF containers typically require an opaque carbon black or UV-blocking pigment package to prevent UV degradation; unpigmented or white containers require accelerated weathering data under ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 to justify outdoor service life.

Thin-Wall Detergent Bottles and the 0.40 mm Wall-Thickness Cliff

Household detergent and personal care bottles use the melt strength of HD01 to lighten the container below 0.50 mm sidewall, but drop impact and ESCR performance degrade sharply when the nominal sidewall drops below 0.40 mm on a cylindrical 500 mL bottle. Production is carried out on a rotary wheel extrusion blow molding system with 12–20 stations, a 50 mm extruder at 24:1 L/D, and open-and-close molds; melt temperature is set at 185–205 °C, mold cooling at 12–18 °C, and the output rate for a 1 L bottle reaches 4,000–6,000 units/h. The formulation includes a color masterbatch at 1.0–3.0 wt%, a non-crosslinking slip/antiblock combination not exceeding 0.1 wt% total, and a process aid masterbatch at 0.2–0.5 wt% only when high-shear melt fracture appears at the die lip. Because certain organic red and yellow pigment concentrates reduce ESCR, every color concentrate is qualified by ISO 22088-3 or ASTM D1693 Condition B in 10 vol% Igepal CO-630 at 50 °C, with a rejection threshold below 100 h for the finished bottle pinch-off area. Empty 1 L bottles are tested for top load to 250 N according to ISO 12048 and drop impact from 1.2 m at 23 °C according to ASTM D2463. Terminal products include 250 mL–5 L bottles for dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, fabric softener, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and industrial hand cleanser. When the formulation contains more than 30% linear alkylbenzene sulfonate, the bottle must pass a 90-day oven storage test at 50 °C to detect environmental stress cracking at the pinch-off and cap thread before commercial release.
