    Application of Solvay XLPE T

Solvay XLPE T is metered into a single-screw pipe extruder as the silane-grafted high-density polyethylene component of a two-part Sioplas crosslinking system, with pellet moisture kept below 200 ppm by pre-drying at 70 °C for 2 h when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%. The extrusion blend for potable water service comprises 94.5–95.5 wt% Solvay XLPE T, 4.5–5.5 wt% tin catalyst masterbatch based on dioctyltin dilaurate, and no more than 2.0 wt% of drinking-water-certified pigment masterbatch. Higher pigment loadings above 3.0 wt% are avoided because dispersed pigment agglomerates act as stress-concentration sites during ISO 9080 long-term hydrostatic strength regression. Pipe is extruded at melt temperature 195–205 °C on a 45 mm grooved-feed extruder with L/D 30:1, compression ratio 2.8:1, and a spiral mandrel pipe die; vacuum calibration at -0.06 MPa fixes outer diameter before the pipe enters a hot-water crosslinking bath at 85–95 °C for 8–12 h for 16 × 2.2 mm PEX-b pipe. Post-cure gel content is checked at ≥ 65% by ISO 15875-2 xylene solvent extraction, and wall thickness is measured on-line with ultrasonic scanning at an alarm tolerance of +0.1/-0.0 mm. Compliance for potable water contact covers NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, WRAS, KTW-BWGL, DVGW W270, ACS, with finished product standards ISO 15875-2, DIN 16892, ASTM F876, and ASTM F877. Terminal products are 16–63 mm PEX-b pipes for hot and cold drinking-water distribution, manifold connectors, and riser piping in residential and commercial buildings. The compound is incompatible with amine-based antistatic additives because basic nitrogen groups can complex the tin catalyst and retard silanol condensation, producing low-gel-content sections that fail hydrostatic pressure testing.

What Drives Gel Content Uniformity in Hydronic Underfloor Heating Pipe?

In hydronic underfloor heating pipe extrusion, the limiting variable is gel content uniformity along the coil length, not short-term burst strength. The formulation uses a leaner catalyst split than potable-water pipe: 95.0–96.0 wt% Solvay XLPE T graft component, 4.0–5.0 wt% tin catalyst masterbatch, and an additional 0.2–0.5 phr high-molecular-weight hindered phenolic antioxidant masterbatch to reduce oxidative gel skin during 10–14 h water bath residence. Free catalyst masterbatch above 6.0 wt% is not permitted because excess tin accelerates silanol condensation unevenly and creates hard spots in the crosslinked matrix. Extrusion runs at 190–200 °C on a grooved-feed single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1; melt pressure is held at 15–25 MPa because pressure oscillations above ±0.5 MPa correlate with wall-thickness variation in 12 × 2.0 mm circuit pipe. Inline laser diameter gauging at 20 Hz controls diameter before the pipe is coiled after passing through a 95 °C hot-water trough for 8 h, followed by 24 h conditioning at 23 °C and 50% RH. Start-up scrap regrind is limited to 5 wt% and must be re-dried below 150 ppm moisture, since oxidized silane groups in regrind lower final gel content below the 70% sampling threshold. Product compliance follows ISO 15875-2, DIN 16892, DIN 4726, and system design EN 1264-4; long-term hydrostatic strength is verified at 95 °C and 1.0 MPa according to ISO 9080. Terminal products are 12–25 mm PEX-b heating circuits embedded in floor screed, radiator connection pipes, and manifold distribution lines.

Oxygen Barrier Coextrusion and EVOH Layer Thickness Tolerance

Five-layer coextrusion of PEX/EVOH/PEX barrier pipe positions Solvay XLPE T as inner and outer layers at a combined 88–92 vol%; maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene tie resin comprises 2–4 vol% per tie layer, and EVOH with 32 mol% ethylene content constitutes 4–6 vol%. The formulation addition ratio remains 95:5 Solvay XLPE T to catalyst masterbatch in both PEX layers, while the outer layer may contain 2.0–3.0 wt% UV-stable pigment when pipe is installed above screed near manifolds. Coextrusion uses three extruders: a 60 mm main extruder for the XLPE T layers, a 25 mm tie-resin extruder, and a 25 mm EVOH extruder; melt temperatures are 195–205 °C for XLPE T, 200–210 °C for tie resin, and 210–220 °C for EVOH. The feedblock and five-layer spiral die are specified with a residence-time distribution below 180 s to prevent EVOH thermal degradation. After vacuum calibration, the pipe is crosslinked in a 90 °C steam chamber for 12–16 h; because moisture must diffuse through the outer XLPE T layer, cure time for 16 × 2.2 mm barrier pipe is approximately 25% longer than single-layer PEX of equal wall thickness. Applicable standards include ISO 21004-1, DIN 16836, and oxygen diffusion barrier evaluation by DIN 4726 or ISO 17455; oxygen permeation must remain below 0.10 g/(m³·d) at 40 °C. Terminal products are 16–40 mm multilayer PEX/EVOH/PEX pipes for closed hydronic heating and chilled-water circuits where ferrous pump and valve corrosion must be prevented.

For residential fire sprinkler piping, Solvay XLPE T is processed at 94.0–95.0 wt% with 5.0–6.0 wt% catalyst masterbatch and 2.0–4.0 wt% orange pigment concentrate formulated with low-sulfur organic pigments. Iron oxide pigment levels above 1.0 wt% are avoided because transition metals shorten oxidative induction time during ASTM D3895 testing and can create brittle zones at fitting insertion points. Pipe is extruded at 185–195 °C, slightly lower than potable-water pipe, to reduce silane pre-scorch in the head; a 50 mm grooved-feed extruder with L/D 28:1 is used. After extrusion the pipe passes through a 95 °C hot-water bath for 8–10 h, then is conditioned for 24 h at 23 °C before burst testing. Hydrostatic burst pressure for 19 mm pipe is required at 2.0 MPa minimum at 23 °C; gel content is measured at ≥ 65% per ISO 15875-2. System compliance follows NFPA 13D, UL 1821, and FM 1635, with pipe material certified to ASTM F876 and ASTM F877 at a maximum service temperature of 93 °C. Terminal products are 19–25 mm PEX-b sprinkler branch lines for one- and two-family dwellings, manufactured housing, and residential lofts.

When Snow-Melting Circuits Use High-Load Embedded PEX-B Pipe

Snow-melting circuits differ from interior floor-heating pipe because the hydronic fluid may contain ethylene glycol up to 50 vol%, and the pipe is embedded in concrete or asphalt with higher thermal expansion stress. The formulation uses 95.0–96.0 wt% Solvay XLPE T, 4.0–5.0 wt% tin catalyst masterbatch, and 0.5–0.8 phr antioxidant masterbatch for long-term exposure to inhibited glycol solutions. Extrusion is performed at 190–200 °C on a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1; wall thickness for 20 mm pipe is controlled at 2.8–3.0 mm, and crosslinking in a 90 °C water bath lasts 10–14 h. After coiling, pipe is tested at 6 bar and 70 °C for 1,000 h according to ISO 1167, with no leakage or rupture permitted. If exposed manifold piping is supplied, 2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch is added for UV stability, but this addition is omitted for embedded circuits. Product standards are ISO 15875-2, DIN 16892, and system design EN 1264-4. Terminal products are 20–25 mm PEX-b pipes for outdoor snow-melting systems, ramp de-icing circuits, and ground-source heat pump gathering loops.
