Application of SK YUCLAIR MDPE DX800

SK YUCLAIR MDPE DX800, a medium-density polyethylene rotomoulding powder with a specified density of 0.933 g/cm³ and a melt index of 5.0 g/10 min at 190°C/2.16 kg when tested to ASTM D1238-20 Procedure A, enters potable water tank production as a 35-mesh ground powder. In single-layer tank manufacturing, dry-blend pigment concentrates are added at 0.8–1.5 wt%, and the powder is conditioned to 20–25°C before charging. On a 2.4–3.6 m carousel machine equipped with gas-fired moulds, the peak internal air temperature is held at 200–210°C; the first derivative of the internal air temperature trace is used to terminate the heating cycle, not dwell time alone. Rotation parameters on a 500 L cylindrical mould are set at 4–6 rpm primary and 1–2 rpm secondary. A primary speed below 3.8 rpm causes gravity-induced thinning at the bottom knuckle radius, producing wall thickness deviations of 1.5–2.0 mm on a nominal 5.0 mm wall. After heating, forced-air cooling is staged to bring the outer surface to 70°C before demoulding; rapid water quenching below that temperature increases frozen-in stresses and reduces environmental stress crack resistance in the bottom flanges.

Compliance for potable water contact is maintained through FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 olefin polymer clearance and NSF/ANSI 61 extraction testing. The tank shell is measured against ASTM D1998-21 for upright polyethylene storage tanks; equivalent plastic strain in the lower sidewall is evaluated by strain-gauge rosettes at 0.5 m above the base during a 24 h hydrostatic fill. The mechanical acceptance window includes tensile yield strength not less than 15 MPa when tested to ASTM D638-14 Type IV specimens at 50 mm/min, and ESCR failure time greater than 1000 h under ASTM D1693-15 Condition B, 10% Igepal CO-630. Incoming QC plans should reject powder lots with density below 0.931 g/cm³ or melt index above 5.5 g/10 min, because such drift increases wall thinning at upper sidewall sections during the second-half heat phase.

Agricultural Chemical Tanks: Environmental Stress Crack Resistance in Fertiliser and Pesticide Service

The agricultural chemical tank sector differs from potable water service because exterior weathering and internal chemical attack act on the same micro-strain field at the moulded parting line. For a 2,000 L horizontal fertiliser reserve tank, the shot weight is calculated for a nominal wall of 6.0 mm in the shell and 9.0 mm in the threaded lid boss. The formulation uses 0.20–0.30 wt% HALS-1, 0.10–0.15 wt% phosphate process stabilizer, and 2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch for outdoor UV protection. Carbon black addition above 2.5 wt% is avoided on thin-walled rotomoulded lids because agglomerates act as crack initiation sites under repeated fill and drain hydrostatic cycling. Powder blending is performed in a low-shear ribbon blender at 30 rpm for 15 min to disperse additives without generating fines below 200 µm.

Processors run the mould at peak internal air temperature 205–215°C and hold for 18–22 min on a 3.0 m carousel, depending on ambient temperature. Cooling is controlled so that demoulding occurs at 65–75°C; parts demoulded above 85°C show measurable warpage at the top manway flange, with out-of-roundness exceeding 3 mm on a 500 mm opening. Chemical compatibility is validated under ASTM D543-21 immersion for a minimum of 30 days at 50°C in the intended fertiliser blend; the tensile yield retention must be above 85% of the unexposed value. For transport packaging, the moulded container is classified as a rigid plastics intermediate bulk container under UN 1H1 when the shell passes the bottom lift and stacking tests of EN 12574-1. Final articles in this sector include horizontal leg tanks from 1,000 L to 5,000 L, saddle tanks for row-crop sprayers, and chemical dosing tanks with integrally moulded sight-glass bosses.

Why Does a Narrow Melt Index Window Control Wall Porosity in Stationary Diesel Tank Rotomoulding?

A production-scale conflict arises when rotomoulders use DX800 for double-wall stationary diesel fuel tanks above 2,000 L: the same melt index that gives adequate leveling at 5.0 g/10 min also creates sensitivity to moisture-induced void formation if the peak internal air temperature overshoots 215°C. At 190°C the powder sinters, but wall densification continues until 210°C; below 200°C the inner surface retains microvoids that fail a 0.03 MPa air-pressure leakage test after 24 h. On a gas-fired shuttle machine with 0.9 m diameter moulds, heating to 212–218°C at a rate of 8–10°C/min is used, followed by slow air cooling at 0.3°C/min until 90°C. The inner wall thickness is set to 5.0 mm and the outer containment shell to 4.0 mm, separated by an 8 mm leak-detection annulus.

Powder stored in line-side bins above 60% RH must be regarded as wet. Pre-drying at 50°C for 2 h in dehumidified air is required before charging; otherwise steam blowholes appear at the mould surface when internal air reaches 205°C, producing leakage at welded inserts. The formulation for diesel exposure includes 0.15 wt% acid neutralizer and 0.25 wt% hindered phenolic antioxidant, but no antistatic additive is used in single-skin diesel fuel tanks because its migration may affect downstream fuel filter performance. The final articles are non-pressurized stationary diesel and biodiesel blend tanks up to B20, skid-mounted day tanks of 500–5,000 L, and integrally moulded secondary containment basins tested under EN 13160-3 with a 0.01 MPa leak-detection vacuum.

In marine buoyancy bodies processed at mould surface temperatures of 240–280°C, the 0.933 g/cm³ density of MDPE DX800 permits a solid-wall shell with enough flexural toughness to survive low-temperature impact at -20°C without the weight penalty of crosslinked polyethylene. The process is a single-piece permanent mould on a straight-arm rotomoulding machine, with wall sections of 6–12 mm to support hydrostatic pressure. For foam-filled buoy modules, the polyethylene shell is rotomoulded first, cooled to 40°C, and then injected with 32–48 kg/m³ closed-cell polyurethane foam. The exotherm of the foam must be kept below 90°C at the PE-foam interface to avoid local deformation; a staged pour with two foam shots is used for volumes above 0.5 m³. Thick-section bubble entrapment is controlled by maintaining a primary/secondary rotation ratio at 4:1 and by specifying a powder with a minimum of 90% particle size between 100 µm and 800 µm. Published data for hydrostatic crush of this specific MDPE foam-filled configuration is limited; acceptance testing typically applies a 24 h hydrostatic pressure at 60 m equivalent water head with less than 5% volumetric displacement. Final parts include navigation buoys, mooring floats, pontoon fender shells, and aquaculture cage collars.

When a Municipal Utility Vault Is Rotomoulded from MDPE DX800

Buried utility structures impose a combination of soil pressure, live load, and long-term creep that requires the wall section to be calculated on a creep modulus basis, not short-term flexural modulus. For a 1.2 m diameter, 2.4 m high cylindrical valve vault, the minimum wall thickness is 12.5 mm under HS-20 live load using a 50-year design life at 23°C. The rock-and-roll rotomoulding machine is set to a primary carriage speed of 1.2–1.5 m/min; higher speeds produce uneven powder distribution in the lower quadrant and can reduce wall thickness by 2–3 mm on the bell end. The heating cycle is extended to maintain 200–210°C internal air temperature for 25–30 min because thicker walls require a longer soak to eliminate the residual crystallinity gradient through the wall cross-section.

Backfilling requirements dominate the installation window. The vault is not to be placed against angular stone backfill with particle sizes above 20 mm unless a 150 mm sand bedding layer is placed first, as point loading accelerates slow crack growth at the corrugation valleys. Moulded-in access risers and lateral bosses are reinforced by increasing local wall thickness to 15 mm; stress concentration factors at the riser opening are evaluated with ASTM D2412-21 parallel-plate ring deflection at 5% ovality. The final products are septic tank shells, pump chambers, stormwater oil-water separators, and gate valve vaults. For buried drainage structures, elastic buckling limit is compared with local public works requirements under hydrostatic leakage testing per EN 1610.

Rotational moulders serving public playground and street furniture programmes use SK YUCLAIR MDPE DX800 at a nominal wall of 3.0–4.0 mm with 2.0 wt% UV-stabilized masterbatch and 0.2 wt% process stabilizer. The mould surface temperature is limited to 250°C to avoid gloss variation on sculpted slides; peak internal air temperature is held at 205°C for thin-wall panels. Because the elongation at break exceeds 700% under ASTM D638-14, hollow slide shells pass the impact tests of EN 1176-1:2017 even at -20°C. Demoulding is performed at 60–70°C; thicker sections in the seat boss require an additional 3 min of cooling to prevent sink marks. The final components include tunnel slides, climbing panels, bench seats, litter bin shrouds, and traffic bollard shells. Compliance with lead and cadmium limits is verified by EN 71-3:2019 migration tests for accessible play surfaces; the grade must be used without recycled-content dilution because contaminant level variability can shift migration results above the 19 mg/kg lead limit in Category III scraped-off material.
