Application of SK Geo Centric HDPE 3301

In high-cavitation thin-wall injection moulding of dairy tubs and lids, SK Geo Centric HDPE 3301 is processed as a high-flow high-density polyethylene with a nominal melt flow index of 3.0 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190°C and 2.16 kg, and a density of 0.957 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019. Formulation for white tubs uses a TiO₂ concentrate in an LLDPE carrier at 2 wt% to 4 wt%, with a slip/antiblock concentrate at 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt% to control denesting friction. The material is fed through a barrier screw with an L/D of 22:1 to 25:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.6:1. Melt temperature at the nozzle is maintained between 200°C and 220°C; mould temperature is held at 10°C to 20°C because faster skin solidification preserves surface gloss and reduces cycle time. The mould temperature window is narrow at ±5°C; deviations beyond this range produce visible gate blush or rim ovality. Injection speed for wall sections of 0.45 mm to 0.80 mm is set at 200 mm/s to 350 mm/s, with switch-over by screw position at 95% to 98% of fill. Hold pressure of 50 MPa to 70 MPa is applied for 0.8 s to 2.0 s to minimize sink marks around rim sealing areas. Food-contact compliance for non-fatty, aqueous, and dairy products is evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and EU Regulation No 10/2011, with overall migration below 10 mg/dm² for the intended contact ratio. Terminal articles include 125 mL to 1 L yogurt cups, margarine tubs, and snap-on lids produced on 32- to 64-cavity hot-runner stack moulds with cycle times of 4.5 s to 7.0 s. A process limit occurs when flow length exceeds 250 mm at a wall thickness below 0.40 mm; shear rates above 40,000 s⁻¹ can initiate melt fracture in the gate area, visible as surface haze near the sprue.

What Torque Retention Boundaries Govern Injection-Moulded Polyethylene Closures?

SK Geo Centric HDPE 3301 is used for single-piece and two-piece closures for still water, dairy, and personal-care bottles because its density of 0.957 g/cm³ provides a balance of environmental stress crack resistance and strip torque retention. The formulation for beverage closures includes an erucamide slip concentrate in an LLDPE carrier dosed at 0.5 wt% to 1.0 wt%, delivering 250 ppm to 1,000 ppm erucamide in the final closure; colour masterbatch is added at 0.5 wt% to 1.5 wt% when a non-natural tint is required. The melt is processed in 48- to 96-cavity hot-runner tools with valve-gated drops of 0.6 mm to 1.2 mm. A hot runner manifold temperature of 230°C to 250°C is maintained, while nozzle temperature is kept at 210°C to 230°C; the manifold must be held within ±5°C because lower settings produce valve tip crystallization and higher settings reduce molecular weight. Residence time in the barrel is limited to 5 min; longer residence at temperatures above 240°C reduces molecular weight and increases the risk of environmental stress cracking on the tamper-evident bridge. Injection speed is profiled with an initial high-velocity stage of 120 mm/s to 180 mm/s to fill the outer thread region, followed by a reduced velocity of 30 mm/s to 50 mm/s across the bridge. Pack pressure is set at 40 MPa to 60 MPa for 0.6 s to 1.5 s. Torque performance is tested according to ASTM D3473; removal torque for 30/25 mm finishes is typically specified in the range 1.0 N·m to 2.2 N·m, and values below 0.8 N·m signal thread deformation or insufficient crystallization in the bridge. Organoleptic suitability is assessed by panel tests with low-odour masterbatches; migratory amine-based antistatic agents are avoided because they alter taste and closure slip. The main defect mode is incomplete fill of the tamper-evident band when mould temperature falls below 8°C; bridge notches then exhibit microporosity and fail tensile release testing.

Injection-moulded open-top pails and tight-head containers in 5 L to 20 L capacities use SK Geo Centric HDPE 3301 as a stiff, food-grade and chemical-resistant shell. The compounding step is simple dry blending of pigment concentrates based on compatible HDPE carriers at 2 wt% to 4 wt%; outdoor formulations incorporate a hindered amine light stabilizer package at 0.2 wt% to 0.5 wt%. Pre-drying is not required below 60% RH, but storage in open silos above that threshold introduces surface moisture that leads to splay and silver streaks. The part wall thickness ranges from 2.0 mm to 4.5 mm, with shot masses of 500 g to 4.0 kg. Processing on hydraulic or hybrid machines with clamp forces of 400 t to 1,600 t uses melt temperatures of 200°C to 230°C and mould temperatures of 10°C to 25°C. Fill velocity is set to 60 mm/s to 120 mm/s to avoid jetting in the gate area, with hold pressure of 60 MPa to 80 MPa applied over 8 s to 20 s. The deeper draw and thicker base require cooling times of 25 s to 45 s; premature ejection before the base reaches 70°C produces ovality at the rim. For hazardous goods, pails are UN-type certified as 1H2 open-head or 1H1 tight-head plastics packagings under ADR/RID/IMDG and must pass stack load testing at 40°C for 28 days without buckling. Environmental stress crack resistance is determined by ASTM D1693, condition B, with 100% Igepal CO-630; the density of 0.957 g/cm³ positions the grade for moderate ESCR requirements, while more aggressive aromatic solvents require a higher-molecular-weight HDPE with lower melt flow index. Terminal articles include food-grade buckets, paint pails, and industrial chemical containers with bail-handle ears and sealed lids.

Pallet Moulding Requires Weld Line and Differential Shrinkage Control

Industrial pallets injection-moulded from SK Geo Centric HDPE 3301 are produced in shot masses from 18 kg to 45 kg on accumulator-assisted machines with clamp force between 2,000 t and 3,500 t. The formulation includes post-industrial regrind at 15 wt% to 25 wt% when validated under the moulder's lot-release procedure; outdoor grades incorporate an ultraviolet stabilizer concentrate at 0.25 wt% to 0.50 wt%. The moulding process uses multiple hot-runner valve gates or sequential valve gating to manage flow fronts across ribbed deck structures. Melt temperature at the nozzle is set at 220°C to 240°C; mould temperature is maintained at 15°C to 30°C. Injection pressure at the machine intensifier ranges from 120 MPa to 160 MPa because the flow length can exceed 1,200 mm. Packing pressure is profiled from 80 MPa down to 30 MPa over 30 s to 60 s; total cooling time is 180 s to 360 s for ribs with nominal wall thickness of 4 mm to 10 mm. The critical defect is differential shrinkage between the thick rib bases and the thin deck skin, producing concave warp greater than 3 mm per 1,000 mm span. This is controlled by graduated holding pressure and by placing gates at the intersections of longitudinal and transverse ribs. Weld lines form behind core pins and around fork openings; their tensile strength is assessed by cutting specimens across the weld and testing according to ISO 527-2:2012 at 50 mm/min. A weld factor below 0.80 relative to non-welded material requires rebalancing the valve gate sequence. Finished pallets are assessed under ISO 8611-1:2021 for static and dynamic load capacity, and under EN 13698-1:2003 for production specification. Without ultraviolet stabilization, embrittlement under ISO 4892-2 accelerates; elongation loss exceeds 30% after 2,000 h in xenon-arc weathering.

For automotive washer reservoirs and coolant overflow tanks, SK Geo Centric HDPE 3301 is evaluated against environmental stress cracking resistance in methanol-water blends containing 30 wt% to 50 wt% ethanol or methanol. The formulation is based on carbon black concentrate at 0.5 wt% to 1.5 wt% plus a high-performance antioxidant package at 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt%; amine-based antistatic additives are not used because polar low-molecular-weight amines can promote threshold stress cracking at hot-plate weld lines. The production route is injection moulding of two shells followed by hot-plate welding at 210°C to 230°C with a welding displacement of 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm. Shell wall thickness is 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm; melt temperature is 210°C to 240°C; mould temperature is 15°C to 30°C. Because the part contains long flow fronts from a single edge gate, hold pressure of 60 MPa to 90 MPa is maintained for 10 s to 25 s to compress the weld area. ESCR is evaluated per ASTM D1693 condition A in 100% Igepal CO-630 at 50°C, with failure defined as 50% of test specimens cracking; parts for washer reservoirs are required to exceed 48 h without crack initiation. Low-temperature impact resistance is tested at -30°C according to ISO 180/A; published data for HDPE 3301 at this specific condition is limited, so production validation uses burst testing of welded reservoirs at -35°C after 24 h conditioning. The material is not recommended for reservoirs holding hot engine coolant above 90°C for continuous service; repeated thermal cycling between -40°C and 85°C can initiate microcracking at weld lines within 500 cycles if the weld bead protrusion exceeds 0.3 mm. Terminal assemblies include washer bottles with level sensor bosses and hot-plate-welded filler necks.

When Returnable Crates Operate Below -20°C

Returnable beverage and agricultural crates moulded from SK Geo Centric HDPE 3301 require impact modification for cold storage and outdoor winter handling. The base polymer is dry-blended with 3 wt% to 5 wt% linear low-density polyethylene or 2 wt% to 4 wt% ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer to raise notched impact resistance without reducing flexural modulus below 800 MPa. Pigment masterbatch is added at 1 wt% to 3 wt%. Mixing occurs in the injection machine with a shear-intensive general-purpose screw of L/D 20:1 to 24:1; melt temperature is 210°C to 230°C. Mould temperature is set at 10°C to 20°C, and injection speed is 40 mm/s to 80 mm/s for wall thicknesses of 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm. Packing pressure is 50 MPa to 70 MPa for 5 s to 15 s. Internal ribs are gated through multiple submarine gates; knit lines at rib intersections are tested using falling dart impact per ISO 6603-2 at -20°C. The pass criterion for crate bases is no crack on 8 of 10 specimens after a 5 kg striker at 1.0 m/s. Stacking performance is tested under ISO 12048 at 23°C and 50% relative humidity; a filled 600 mm × 400 mm crate is required to withstand a static load of 450 kg for 28 days with deflection below 3 mm. Season cracking in citrus crate applications is a known failure mode when detergent sanitizers containing quaternary ammonium compounds remain in contact with high-stress hinge areas. The stress-cracking resistance under those cleaners is screened with ASTM D1693 using the intended sanitizer as the stress-cracking fluid instead of Igepal CO-630, not inferred from general ESCR data.

Large waste bin bodies and appliance housing components use SK Geo Centric HDPE 3301 in single-face and double-walled injection moulding, where deep draw and thick bosses create extended cooling-limited cycles. The formulation for outdoor containers includes a carbon black or colour masterbatch at 1 wt% to 3 wt% and an ultraviolet stabilizer package at 0.25 wt% to 0.50 wt%; for appliance housings requiring lower shrinkage, a talc-filled HDPE masterbatch is used at 5 wt% to 10 wt%, with the note that addition above 10 wt% reduces notched Izod impact below the 4 kJ/m² acceptance threshold. Shot masses of 2.0 kg to 10 kg are processed on machines from 650 t to 1,800 t. Melt temperature is 200°C to 230°C; mould temperature is 12°C to 25°C. To prevent sink marks on boss faces, gas counterpressure or internal gas injection is applied at 10 MPa to 25 MPa when the boss diameter exceeds 6 mm and wall thickness exceeds 3.5 mm. Cooling time is 30 s to 90 s; ejection temperature is set below 65°C to reduce post-mould warpage. For outdoor waste containers, accelerated weathering per ISO 4892-2:2013 with a xenon-arc source and a 0.35 W/m² irradiance at 340 nm is used to verify colour change below ΔE 5.0 after 1,000 h. Impact performance is evaluated with ISO 6603-2 at 23°C; the large flat base panels are impacted after moulding to detect brittle failure caused by excessive shear history in the hot runner. If the barrel residence time exceeds 8 min or melt temperature exceeds 250°C, carbonyl index measurements on the moulded skin increase, and notched Izod impact values under ISO 180/A fall below the acceptance threshold of 4 kJ/m². Terminal articles include wheeled refuse bins, curbside recycling containers, internal drainage pans for appliances, and structural housing panels.
