On unpainted automotive exterior components, SITRAPLAS ASA is processed only after desiccant drying to a residual moisture below 0.05 wt%; exposure of wet granulate to melt temperatures above 250 °C produces surface splay and a measurable drop in 60° gloss retention after 3,000 kJ/m² Xenon arc testing. Injection moulding lines with screw L/D ratios of 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratios of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 are preferred; melt temperatures are held between 235 °C and 255 °C, and the tool surface is controlled from 45 °C to 65 °C. For dark grey or black mirror-housing compounds, production formulations typically combine 1.0–1.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch, 0.8–1.2 wt% high-molecular-weight UV stabilizer/HALS masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 wt% mould release agent, and 15–20 wt% clean in-house regrind; the regrind fraction is increased only after melt flow checks per ISO 1133-1:2022, because fractions above 25 wt% are linked to gas jets and splay on grilles with wall sections below 2.0 mm. Components are released against SAE J2527 Type S borosilicate-filtered xenon arc exposure and ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1, with irradiance recorded at 0.55 W/(m²·nm) at 340 nm; acceptance limits for unpainted Class B exterior parts are commonly set at ΔE ≤ 3.0 and 60° gloss retention ≥ 70% after 2,000–3,000 kJ/m², depending on OEM specification. End products include door mirror housings, radiator grilles, cowl vent grilles, B-pillar finishers, wheel arch liners and roof rack bases produced on standard hydraulic injection moulding machines; short shots at rib intersections below 1.5 mm wall occur when melt temperature drops under 240 °C.
In rigid PVC window profile coextrusion, SITRAPLAS ASA is delivered as a weathering cap layer at 0.25–0.40 mm over a 3.5 mm wall PVC substrate moving at production speeds of 2–4 m/min; capstock melt stability is governed by the interaction between ASA viscosity at the die land and the melt strength required to maintain the thin layer without draw lines. The ASA capstock extruder is usually a 30–40 mm single-screw unit with 24:1 to 28:1 L/D and a barrier screw incorporating a mixing tip; barrel temperatures from hopper to die are set 210–240 °C, while the PVC main extruder is a counter-rotating conical twin-screw with metering zone temperatures 180–200 °C. Feedblock and coextrusion die zones are held at 200–215 °C, and the calibration table water temperature is kept at 18–25 °C to freeze the cap layer without causing shrinkage marks. The ASA cap compound is formulated with 2–3 wt% inorganic pigment masterbatch, 0.8–1.5 wt% UV absorber/HALS masterbatch, 0.5–1.0 wt% acrylic processing aid, and optionally 0.2–0.4 wt% antioxidant; transition scrap from profile start-up may be granulated below 6 mm and added to the PVC substrate at 5–10 wt%, but is not re-introduced into the cap layer because viscosity shifts at levels above 2 wt% create draw lines. Compliance is assessed to EN 12608-1 for profiles and ASTM D3679 for rigid vinyl siding; colour retention after weathering is tested under ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 and ASTM G154 cycle 1 for 500–1,500 h depending on market. End products include main window frames, sash profiles, fascia boards, soffit panels, cladding planks and decorative trim boards; coextruded ASA cap layers are used on the exposed weathering face only, with the hidden PVC substrate providing impact and cost.
Outdoor telecommunication enclosures and smart-meter housings require simultaneous UV weathering and resistance to ignition when specified for UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm wall thickness; salt-spray corrosion of metal substrate alternatives is absent with ASA but molded-in stress at gate locations must be controlled by tool temperatures of 70–90 °C and slow fill rates. Halogen-free phosphorus-based flame retardant masterbatch is compounded at 14–18 wt% with 1.0–2.0 wt% UV/HALS masterbatch and 2–4 wt% colourant package; for parts permitted to remain UL 94 HB, a lower loading of 3–6 wt% carbon black/UV masterbatch is sufficient. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h in a desiccant dryer with dew point ≤ -30 °C is mandatory because FR packages increase hydrophilicity and surface moisture uptake. Injection moulding is performed with a shut-off nozzle and chrome-plated screw to limit residence time; at melt temperatures above 260 °C and residence times beyond 8 min, the unfilled FR grades show visible yellowing and a drop in comparative tracking index per IEC 60112. Gate sizing at 0.5–0.8 mm thickness and hot runner manifold temperatures 240–250 °C prevent jetting in housings with side-wall ribs below 2.5 mm. Compliance is evaluated to UL 746C f1 for outdoor suitability, UL 94 at final wall thickness, IEC 62208 for empty enclosures, IEC 60529 for ingress protection classes IP65/IP66, and RoHS 2011/65/EU plus REACH Article 33 for halogen-free declarations.

For coextruded deck hatches and exterior trim on recreational vehicles, SITRAPLAS ASA is specified as the weatherable cap layer over 3.0–5.0 mm ABS or ASA/ABS substrate sheet; the cap layer thickness is held at 0.35–0.70 mm, representing 8–14 wt% of the total sheet weight depending on substrate thickness, because thinner cap layers fail by microcracking after 2,000 h of ASTM G154 UVB-313 exposure. The capstock compound contains 1.5–2.5 wt% UV absorber/HALS masterbatch and 2–4 wt% pigment masterbatch; the ABS substrate can carry 15–20 wt% regrind from thermoforming skeletons, while regrind of the cap layer is limited to <5 wt% in the cap to prevent delamination at the coextrusion interface. For higher heat distortion, an ASA/PC blend ratio of 60:40 by weight is used in the cap layer where the part is mounted near engine heat sources, provided drying at 85 °C for 4 h is maintained. Sheet extrusion uses a polished three-roll stack with roll temperatures 75–100 °C; thermoforming is conducted at preheated sheet surface temperatures of 150–175 °C, with aluminium tool temperatures at 60–80 °C and vacuum applied at -0.06 MPa to -0.08 MPa relative to atmosphere. Corner cracking occurs below 140 °C sheet surface temperature or when areal draw ratio exceeds 1.5:1 in unannealed sheet. Validation for marine exterior plastics is not governed by one harmonised standard; project specifications commonly combine ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 for xenon arc weatherability, ASTM D4329 cycle A for fluorescent UV, and UL 746C f1 where the part is exposed to rain and UV on RV rooftops. End products include deck hatches, access plates, radar arch trim, RV roof vent covers, air conditioner shrouds, and exterior side skirt panels.
Grass-cutting equipment and snow-thrower enclosures subjected to ultraviolet exposure, impact from ejected debris, and heat radiated from engines are processed in 10–20 wt% glass-fibre-reinforced SITRAPLAS ASA; the fibre is chopped strand with nominal length 3.2–4.5 mm, and the compound is prepared on a corotating twin-screw extruder with 40:1 L/D and strands pelletised after water cooling. Formulation for structural covers includes 10–20 wt% E-glass fibre, 2–4 wt% pigment masterbatch, 1.0–2.0 wt% UV/HALS masterbatch, 0.2–0.4 wt% mould release, and 2–4 wt% impact modifier where notched Izod values below 8 kJ/m² would be unacceptable after humid ageing. The resulting tensile modulus rises from roughly 2,300 MPa to 4,500–5,500 MPa as glass loading crosses 15 wt%, but the melt-processing window narrows. Injection moulding uses a screw with L/D 20:1 and low compression ratio 1.8:1–2.2:1 to limit fibre breakage; melt temperatures are 240–260 °C, mould temperatures 60–80 °C, back pressure 0.5–2.0 bar, and injection speed is reduced at gate entrances to avoid fibre separation. Shrinkage anisotropy is present; mould shrinkage in the flow direction falls to 0.15–0.25%, while transverse shrinkage remains at 0.45–0.65%, requiring gate placement at the thickest section. Weatherability is validated to ISO 4892-2 and SAE J2527; heat deflection under load is reported to ISO 75-2 method A 1.80 MPa and rises from 95 °C for unfilled ASA to 102–108 °C for 20 wt% glass fibre. End products include riding-mower hoods, fender decks, engine shrouds, snowthrower side panels and wheel covers.
Sheet-fed thermoforming of SITRAPLAS ASA for outdoor sign faces and architectural cladding is limited by melt-strength drop above 175 °C surface temperature and by acrylic cap layer adhesion below 150 °C; operators therefore maintain preheating at 150–170 °C across the sheet rather than using point-source quartz that creates differential draw. Blends for thick signage sheet are formulated with 70–80 wt% ASA, 15–25 wt% PMMA for surface hardness and chemical resistance, 1.0–2.0 wt% UV/HALS masterbatch, 2–4 wt% colour masterbatch, and 2–5 wt% impact modifier; sheet thickness ranges from 2.0 mm to 6.0 mm. Extrusion uses a 60–90 mm single-screw extruder with L/D 28:1–32:1, screen changer temperature at 200–220 °C, and roll stack temperatures 85–110 °C; thermoforming mould shrinkage is 0.5–0.7%, so trim dies are sized after first article measurement. Fire classification for building cladding is tested to EN 13501-1; the result depends on thickness, backing, and air gap, and published data for this specific configuration is limited. UV colour fastness is usually tested to ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 and ASTM G154 cycle 1; the sheet must meet RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH for lead, cadmium and phthalates in printed graphics.
