Sinopec Yangzi UHMWPE YEV-4500 enters the wet-process separator line as a high-molecular-weight polyethylene powder that is dry-blended with a paraffinic process oil at mass ratios between 12:88 and 25:75 polymer-to-plasticizer before being fed into a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 48:1 to 68:1. The barrel profile rises from 150 °C in the feed throat to 230 °C at the melt pump, and the resulting gel is discharged through a slit die onto a chill roll maintained at 15 °C to 35 °C. The cast sheet is subsequently oriented biaxially at stretch ratios of 5×5 to 7×7 before the paraffinic oil is removed in a countercurrent solvent bath using n-hexane or methylene chloride. After extraction, the membrane is annealed at 100 °C to 130 °C to reduce residual shrinkage. The essential process mechanism is thermally induced phase separation between UHMWPE and plasticizer; the high molar mass of YEV-4500 supplies the gel strength needed to preserve pore identity during extraction. A process conflict appears when the high molar mass fraction restricts plasticizer diffusion during mixing, so the ratio of process oil must be raised toward 75:25 only with staged feeding to prevent agglomerate formation in the melt.
Sheet thickness after biaxial orientation is generally 5 µm to 40 µm, and porosity is held between 35% and 60%. Puncture resistance is measured according to ASTM F1306-21, tensile and elongation according to ASTM D882-18, and pore size by bubble point under ASTM F316-03. Air permeability is reported as a Gurley value under JIS P8117:2009; separator grades for lithium nickel manganese cobalt and lithium iron phosphate cells commonly fall between 100 s/100 mL and 400 s/100 mL. Machine-direction thermal shrinkage at 90 °C for 1 h is controlled below 5% through anneal tension. Residual process oil above 0.5 wt% before winding migrates to the electrode interface and raises cell impedance during formation cycling. Published separator literature identifies the extraction stage as the bottleneck that constrains line speed when sheet thickness drops below 12 µm. The terminal articles are slit-to-width separators used in lithium-ion secondary cells, but every lot must be inspected for gel specks because undispersed YEV-4500 particles produce separator pinholes under electrical leakage testing.
Gel spinning of YEV-4500 is performed by dispersing the powder in decalin or white paraffin oil at 6 wt% to 10 wt% solids; the dope vessel is heated at 130 °C to 170 °C until a homogeneous spin dope forms. The solution is metered through a spinneret with capillary diameters of 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm into a quench bath maintained below 15 °C. The as-spun gel filament is extracted and then drawn in multi-stage hot zones at 120 °C to 145 °C with total draw ratios from 30:1 to 60:1. At draw ratios below 30:1 the chain orientation is too low to develop useful cut resistance; above 60:1 fibrillation increases and broken filaments disrupt downstream twisting. The drawn yarn is combined with glass fibre or high-tenacity polyester filament in a seamless knitted glove shell, where the UHMWPE fibre resists blade penetration under ISO 13997 and EN 388:2016 TDM methodology. Terminal articles include cut-resistant gloves, arm-protection sleeves, and braided ropes for winch and mooring lines.
Tensile tenacity of fully drawn fibre is verified on a single-filament test frame according to ISO 2062:2009; commercial gel-spun UHMWPE fibres typically fall between 2.4 N/tex and 3.2 N/tex. Knitted glove specimens commonly reach ISO 13997 cut levels C to E depending on yarn count and stitch density. Residual solvent must be below 50 ppm for skin-contact textiles tested under OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Annex 4 criteria. A process conflict occurs in the quench stage: rapid cooling improves gel homogeneity but restricts maximum take-up speed, while slow cooling allows surface skin formation that reduces draw continuity. The gel strength of YEV-4500 at low dope solids permits higher draw ratios than extrusion-grade HDPE, although published data for this specific grade under pressurized decalin test configurations is limited.
Ram extrusion of YEV-4500 is carried out on a reciprocating plunger press with a barrel bore of 50 mm to 200 mm and a heated die block maintained at 220 °C to 250 °C. Precompacted powder or calendered preform is loaded into the barrel at 30 MPa to 50 MPa; the plug-flow melting mechanism permits continuous extrusion where conventional screw extruders fail because the polymer shows no measurable melt flow index under ISO 1133-1. The extruded profile is quenched in a water trough and stress-relieved at 105 °C for 4 h to reduce dimensional drift. Terminal profiles include chain guides, spiral chute liners, conveyor wear strips, and marine fender pads. The profiles are machined to final tolerance with carbide-tipped tools because high-molar-mass UHMWPE grades in the 4×10⁶ g/mol class cannot be cleanly cut with conventional high-speed steel without burr formation.
Material properties for machined wear parts are verified under ASTM D638-14 for tensile, ASTM D790-17 for flexural modulus, ISO 2039-1 for ball indentation hardness, and ASTM D1894-14 for dynamic coefficient of friction against steel. Compression-moulded sheet from similar UHMWPE homopolymer grades typically exhibits tensile strength between 35 MPa and 45 MPa with elongation at break above 300%. A process risk is oxidation during prolonged residence in the heated die; oxidized surfaces appear brownish and reduce laminating fusion at the weld line, so die residence time is kept below 30 min. Pre-drying is not mandatory below 60% RH, but surface moisture above that level produces steam pitting in profiles thicker than 40 mm and requires an 80 °C hopper dryer before loading.
Porous sintered sheets from YEV-4500 are produced by gravity filling a mould cavity with sieved powder fractions, followed by heating at 190 °C to 200 °C for 15 min to 60 min under a constrained cover plate that applies 0.5 MPa to 2.0 MPa. The powder particles fusion-bond at their contact points while retaining interstitial voids. Mean pore size is controlled by the particle size distribution; a fraction sieved through 100 µm and retained on 50 µm screens generally yields bubble-point pores in the 10 µm to 40 µm range. Finished plates are machined into filter discs, distributor plates, and aeration pads. In wastewater aeration duty the sintered structure is operated at air pressures of 25 kPa to 60 kPa, and the interparticle voids prevent sludge backflow while maintaining a stable pressure drop. Permeability is measured by ASTM F316-03 and ASTM E1294-89; food-processing water contact is controlled through FDA 21 CFR 177.1520.
Sintering temperature is the controlling variable: below 180 °C particle boundaries remain weak and the plate fractures under backpulsing; above 210 °C the pore volume collapses rapidly and the plate distorts. The narrow window requires oven temperature uniformity of ±5 °C across the mould. Because YEV-4500 does not flow in the melt state, the process cannot produce pore sizes below the interparticle void of the selected powder fraction without post-sinter compression. For sub-10 µm filtration duty a laminated structure with a thin surface layer of finer powder is required, and the interface must be bonded before the support layer reaches full density.

Compression-moulded block stock of YEV-4500 is converted into orthopaedic bearing components only after the converter establishes that the lot meets the impurity and mechanical requirements of ASTM F648-21 and ISO 5834-2. Unlike industrial wear parts, implant stock is produced in vacuum or inert-gas presses at 200 °C to 220 °C with cooling rates of 10 °C/h or slower to minimize residual thermal stress. The moulded block is then machined into acetabular liners and tibial inserts, and the articulating surface is polished to a roughness below 0.1 µm Ra. Crosslinking is introduced by gamma irradiation at 50 kGy to 100 kGy; free radicals are subsequently reduced by remelting at 150 °C to prevent oxidative embrittlement. Wear performance is evaluated in hip and knee simulators under ISO 14242-2 and ISO 14243-2. The terminal articles are packaged under nitrogen and sterilized by gamma or ethylene oxide.
This application imposes a narrower specification envelope than industrial wear parts. Not every lot of YEV-4500 is released for implant use; a separate medical-grade quality agreement and lot-specific traceability under ISO 13485 are required. Conventional UHMWPE tibial inserts in simulator studies often show wear rates below 10 mm³ per million cycles, but published data for this specific powder grade in implant configurations is limited. A known processing conflict is the susceptibility of consolidated blocks to subsurface cracking when machined with blunt tools; carbide or polycrystalline diamond inserts with low feed rates are required to avoid heat-induced oxidation and micromechanical damage.
YEV-4500 is compounded into cast polyurethane and epoxy novolac systems at 5 wt% to 15 wt% on the resin fraction using a high-shear dissolver running at 1,000 min⁻¹ to 3,000 min⁻¹ to break agglomerates. The resulting dispersions are blade-applied to dry-bulk hopper linings and chute plates. At 15 wt% the viscosity of a bisphenol A epoxy system rises from approximately 8 Pa·s to 25 Pa·s at 25 °C; above 20 wt% the dispersions become difficult to spray and the cured film exhibits cratering. The terminal products are abrasion-resistant linings for silos and slurry pipes, where the particles reduce material loss in dry handling. Abrasion resistance is compared using the Taber test under ASTM D4060-19; weight loss index generally decreases as the UHMWPE content increases within the stated loading range.
A compatibility limitation exists with amine-cured epoxy systems: the powder is olefinic and does not participate in the crosslink network, so adhesion relies on mechanical keying rather than chemical bonding. Before application, the metal substrate is grit-blasted to Sa 2.5 under ISO 8501-1 and primed with an epoxy phenalkamine tie coat. Pot life is measured under ISO 9514; addition of YEV-4500 above 15 wt% reduces usable working time because the dispersed particles increase thixotropy. The powders remain in the cured matrix as discrete domains with particle diameters from 20 µm to 120 µm, which can be confirmed by optical microscopy of a cut section.
