Application of Sinopec Wuhan HDPE HD5502W

In the agrochemical packaging sector, HD5502W is processed as the main wall material for UN-certified jerrycans filled with glyphosate, acetochlor and abamectin formulations. The grade is a unimodal blow-molding HDPE with a density of 0.955 g/cm³ (ISO 1183-1:2019) and a melt-flow rate of 0.35 g/(10 min) (ISO 1133-1:2022), placing it in the high-melt-strength class required for a 25-L tight-head jerrican with a minimum sidewall of 0.9 mm. Production-scale trials on a single-station shuttle blow molder with an 80-mm grooved-feed extruder (L/D 30:1) and an accumulator head of 1.5-kg shot size establish a feed-to-die profile of 180/190/195/200°C; the head temperature is held at 202–208°C. The compound is 100 phr HD5502W, 2.5 ± 0.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch (40% pigment in an LLDPE carrier), 0.1–0.2 wt% hindered phenolic-phosphite antioxidant masterbatch, and ≤20 wt% post-industrial regrind. Regrind above 30 wt% reduces the ESCR below 250 h under ASTM D1693-15 condition B in xylene-based test liquids. A mold temperature of 15–25°C and a blow pressure of 0.6–0.8 MPa are used. Wall thickness is measured by ultrasonic gauge after cooling; typical pinch-seam readings are 1.4 mm, and the chimb is 0.9 mm. Post-consumer material is not introduced because residual silicone mold-release agents and amine-based antistatic compounds from detergent bottle streams can accelerate stress cracking. Compliance is anchored to UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.1 for Packing Group II, 49 CFR §178.512, and ADR 6.1.4. Finished articles include 20-L, 25-L and 30-L tight-head jerricans with UN 3H1 or UN 3H2 marking, 5-L calibrated dosing bottles, and pour-spout closures with EPE liners.

Why Does Narrow-Mouth 5-L Lubricant Bottle Production Push HD5502W Toward Its Lower Melt-Temperature Limit?

Continuous shuttle blow molding of 5-L narrow-mouth lubricant bottles exposes HD5502W to high shear at the die lip and rapid cooling against a 10°C mold surface. The bottle must tolerate motor-oil fill at 40°C and stack loads of 8–10 cartons in warehouse storage. The compound is 100 phr HD5502W, 2.0–3.0 wt% white masterbatch (60% TiO₂ in LDPE), 0.15 wt% calcium stearate, and 0.05 wt% fluoropolymer processing aid; the processing aid is introduced only when surface die lines exceed 2.0 mm length on the bottle shoulder. Internal regrind from bottle tails is added at 15–25 wt% after granulate homogenization. Melt temperature is maintained at 208–215°C. Below 202°C the parison surface exhibits melt fracture at the handle bridge, and above 218°C the sidewall thickness at the bridge drops below 0.6 mm. The machine is a 70-mm extruder with L/D 25:1 and an 8-cavity shuttle mold. Blow pressure is 0.6–0.7 MPa. Compliance for nonhazardous lubricant bottles does not require UN marking; however, when the lubricant is classified under UN 6.1 as Packing Group III, the bottle is qualified at a drop height of 0.8 m, and closure torque retention is tested at −20°C. Marking follows ISO 780:2015. Article types are 1-L, 4-L and 5-L standard and extended-nap bottles for SAE 15W-40 engine oil, ISO VG 46 hydraulic oil, and high-detergent diesel crankcase blends.

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tanks manufactured from HD5502W are subjected to a 32.5 wt% aqueous urea solution that freezes at −11.5°C and expands by approximately 7% in volume at the solidification point. The critical failure site is not the tank shell but the 90° fill neck and the molded-in bracket boss; stress cracks initiate there after repeated freeze-thaw cycling. Processing on a 100-mm accumulator-head blow molder with L/D 30:1 extruder uses a melt temperature of 210–220°C, a blow pressure of 0.7–0.9 MPa, and a mold temperature of 15–20°C. The additive formula is 100 phr HD5502W, 2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch, 0.3 wt% HALS-based UV stabilizer, 0.1 wt% hindered phenolic antioxidant, and 0.2 wt% fluoropolymer processing aid. Regrind is capped at 30 wt% and pre-dried at 80°C for 4 h when silo RH exceeds 60%. The temperature window at the accumulator head is limited to ±3°C because parison weight varies by 6–8% outside 205–220°C, creating thin spots at the fill neck and the baffle plate. The tank shell is programmed to 3.0–4.0 mm at the lower chimb and 2.5 mm at the sidewall. Compliance rests on ISO 22241-3:2019 for material compatibility with AUS 32 DEF, ISO 179-1:2010 Charpy notched impact at −40°C, and ISO 16770:2004 full-notch creep ESCR. Published datasheet certification for this specific configuration is limited; converter validation against the OEM freeze-thaw protocol is normally required. Article types include 10-L, 20-L and 55-L portable tanks, 190-L wheeled fleet tanks, and marine DEF storage cassettes.

Coextruded Barrier Layer Carrier for Solvent-Based Adjuvant Formulations

In the five-layer coextrusion of solvent-containing agrochemical adjuvants, HD5502W serves as the outer and inner skin layer, while the core EVOH barrier suppresses permeation of xylene, cyclohexanone and heavy aromatic naphtha. The layer split by mass is 55 ± 5 wt% HDPE skins, 28 ± 3 wt% post-industrial regrind core, 4 ± 1 wt% anhydride-modified tie layers, and 4 ± 1 wt% EVOH. The EVOH layer is held above 4 µm in the bottle sidewall to maintain solvent barrier; below this level, xylene permeation rises and the outer wall softens. Extrusion uses a 65-mm skin extruder (L/D 30:1) and a 35-mm barrier extruder (L/D 24:1) with a five-layer annular die at 215°C. Blow pressure is 0.8 MPa, and the mold is chilled to 15°C. The outer layer must not exceed 220°C melt temperature because EVOH residence time at the die then approaches its thermal degradation threshold, producing interfacial gels. Compliance follows UN 6.1 Packing Group III when the filled adjuvant is classified, with a drop height of 0.8 m; barrier layer quality is monitored by oxygen transmission according to ASTM D3985 on flat sheet and water vapor transmission according to ISO 15106-3. Finished article types include 1-L and 5-L bottles for xylene/cyclohexanone-based concentrates, 10-L crop oil methyl ester adjunct bottles, and 500-mL squeeze-and-measure dosing bottles.

Because residual ethyl acetate and toluene in printing ink and technical adhesive pails attack the container wall, the open-head pail body is extrusion blow molded from HD5502W without post-consumer recyclate. The compound is 100 phr HD5502W; 2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch for black pails or 5.0 wt% TiO₂-based white masterbatch for water-based adhesive pails; 0.15 phr hindered phenolic antioxidant; and 0.1 phr calcium stearate. No post-consumer regrind is permitted, and internal regrind from punch-outs is limited to 10 wt% when the pail is destined for low-solvent fills. The body is blow molded on a 90-mm accumulator-head machine with L/D 24:1, melt temperature 195–210°C, mold temperature 15°C, and blow pressure 0.7 MPa. Top-load compression is verified by ISO 12048:2001 at 23°C; stackability of filled pails is tested at 40°C for 28 days when the contents are classified under EU CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and assigned Packing Group III in transport. Finished article types include 5-L, 10-L, 15-L and 20-L open-head pails with lever-ring closures, 25-kg ink buckets, and 60-L paste pails with gasket-sealed lids.

When the Ductile-to-Brittle Transition of Agricultural Water Storage Containers Drops Below −40°C

Agricultural water storage containers in cold regions require a wall material that does not crack when partially filled and exposed to open-air thermal cycling. HD5502W has a density of 0.955 g/cm³ and a thin-section ductile-to-brittle transition well below −70°C, but sidewall notches at molded-in outlet bosses lower the practical service floor to −40°C. The formula is 100 phr HD5502W, 2.0 wt% UV-stabilized black or green concentrate, 0.2 wt% HALS, and 0.1 wt% processing stabilizer. No regrind is used when the tank is sold into regulated agricultural water systems; for nonpotable livestock wash-down, 20 wt% internal regrind is permitted. The tank is blown on a 120-mm accumulator-head machine with L/D 30:1, melt temperature 205–220°C, mold temperature 15–20°C, and blow pressure 0.8–1.0 MPa. Wall thickness at the outlet boss is programmed to 2.0 mm minimum; below that, drop impact at −40°C produces radial cracks from the threaded insert. Compliance testing includes Charpy notched impact according to ISO 179-1:2010, artificial weathering according to ISO 4892-2:2013, and restricted-substance screening under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII. Finished products include 50-L, 75-L and 100-L vertical water storage tanks with threaded outlets, 20-L livestock dosing containers, and 30-L sprayer carry tanks. Potable-water certification is not claimed for this grade in all jurisdictions; the tanks are therefore designated agricultural and livestock service.
