Application of Sinopec Tianjin VLDPE TJVL-0505

On a three-layer cast stretch film line with a 2,800 mm slot die and a 700 mm diameter chill roll, Sinopec Tianjin TJVL-0505 is introduced into the core layer at 20–40 wt% when the conversion objective is to raise puncture resistance and reduce transverse-direction tear propagation without increasing film thickness above 12–15 µm. The grade is carried by a C8-LLDPE or an ethylene-octene plastomer in the core, while the two outer skin layers remain C4-LLDPE or C6-LLDPE to preserve cling, unwind behaviour, and roll geometry. Melt temperature setpoints are held between 220°C and 240°C across the extruder zones, with the die body at 235°C; the die gap is set to 0.65 mm, and the air gap between die exit and chill roll is 90–150 mm. The chill roll is run at 18–25°C, and line speed is typically 450–600 m/min for a 12 µm film. A vacuum box positioned 30–60 mm from the die exit is used to suppress draw resonance. Because TJVL-0505 has a nominal density of 0.905 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019 and a nominal melt flow rate of 0.5 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022, its lower crystalline fraction shifts the balance between machine-direction elongation and transverse-direction tear resistance; this shift must be quantified on the target line before the core-layer ratio is locked into specification. Film mechanical properties are evaluated under ASTM D1709A for dart drop, ASTM D5748 for puncture resistance, ASTM D882 for tensile elongation at break, and ASTM D1922 for Elmendorf tear. Cling force is tested under ASTM D5458 only when the skin layer contains a tackifier; TJVL-0505 is not added to the skin layer for cling development. No predrying is required when the silo blanket air dew point is below -20°C; if ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, surface moisture is removed with a hopper dryer at 60°C for 2 h to prevent melt-surface defects.

Batch-to-batch variation in the core-layer blend appears mainly as gel count and changes in cast film neck-in. When a new lot of TJVL-0505 is introduced, the converter evaluates apparent melt viscosity on a capillary rheometer at 190°C and 210°C because the low melting fraction shifts the shear-thinning behaviour relative to C8-LLDPE. Die pressure at 235°C is monitored across the shift; a deviation greater than 0.5 MPa from the validated setpoint requires adjustment of the extruder barrel profile or core-layer ratio before the roll reaches full line speed. Edge trim from the cast line containing TJVL-0505 can be reintroduced into the core layer at 5–10 wt% only if the recycled fraction is free of paper labels, adhesive, and moisture; otherwise gel count rises above process control limits.

Can a 20–30 wt% TJVL-0505 Sealant Layer Shift Seal Initiation and Hot Tack in Frozen-Food Blown Film?

The sealant layer of a five-layer blown film for frozen vegetable packaging is specified with a target seal initiation below 90°C and a hot-tack window sufficient for vertical form-fill-seal operation at 40–60 bags/min. In a film structure of PE/PE/EVOH/PE/sealant, the sealant layer is compounded or dry-blended with 20–30 wt% TJVL-0505 and the balance C8-LLDPE. The addition shifts seal initiation downward relative to a C8-LLDPE control because the broader melting distribution and lower crystalline fraction of VLDPE allow seal bar deformation at lower interface temperature; however, the numerical shift depends on sealant-layer thickness, EVOH tie-layer interface roughness, seal bar geometry, dwell time, and sealing pressure. Comparative seal curves are generated by impulse heat sealing under ASTM F2029, seal strength is reported under ASTM F88/F88M, and hot tack is measured under ASTM F1921. Production is typically run on a 350 mm five-layer die with a 2.0 mm die gap, BUR 2.8:1, frost line height 1,000–1,200 mm, and melt temperature 195–210°C. Melt temperature above 230°C should be avoided because gel formation may increase and hot tack may decrease due to stress relaxation in the VLDPE-rich sealant layer. For direct food contact, the finished film must satisfy Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 including overall migration limits under Annex III and any specific migration limits assigned to the antioxidant and slip package; in the United States, the olefin polymer falls under 21 CFR 177.1520(c) subject to the supplier's compositional statement; in China, GB 4806.7-2016 applies. The processor is responsible for confirming lot-specific additive compliance and for conducting total migration under the intended temperature and time conditions because these results are not transferable between different layer structures.

Hot-tack failure on vertical form-fill-seal machines is often misattributed to the VLDPE fraction when the actual cause is cooling-air asymmetry or frost line oscillation above ±20 mm. In a five-layer line running TJVL-0505 in the sealant layer, frost line height must be controlled because a higher frost line increases crystallite perfection and narrows the hot-tack window; a lower frost line can entrap volatiles and reduce seal interfacial strength. Seal-bar contamination from low-melting sealant resin is controlled by setting the impulse sealer release temperature below 90°C at the film interface and by using a PTFE-coated seal bar.

When an extrusion coating line running 18–25 g/m² tie coats on aluminium foil or corona-treated paperboard is required to improve flex-crack resistance in cold-chain distribution, neat TJVL-0505 is not recommended because its nominal 0.5 g/10 min melt flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 reduces drawdown below that of conventional coating LDPE. A dry blend of 30–40 wt% TJVL-0505 with a 7.5 g/10 min LDPE coating resin is processed through a slot die at 260–280°C melt temperature, with an air gap of 150–250 mm and a line speed of 80–200 m/min. The substrate is preheated to 120–170°C, and an inline corona discharge unit is operated at 2–3 kW to raise surface energy before the melt curtain contacts the web. Adhesion to aluminium foil is measured as T-peel strength under ASTM D1876 or as package laminate bond strength under ASTM F904. The low crystallinity of TJVL-0505 contributes to flex-crack resistance, but the blend is not a substitute for an adhesive tie coat in high chemical resistance packaging. If the coated article is intended for food packaging, the converter must determine the applicable status under 21 CFR 177.1395 or Regulation (EU) No 10/2011; if the structure is not direct food contact, mechanical adhesion and conversion-line cleanliness are the controlling specifications. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the onset of draw resonance must be established on the target line because lower melt strength relative to autoclave LDPE will change the maximum stable line speed.

Draw resonance on extrusion coating lines is observed as periodic thickness bands in machine direction; with TJVL-0505/LDPE blends, the onset line speed is generally lower than with neat LDPE. The processor can widen the stable window by reducing the air gap to 120–180 mm and raising melt temperature to 270–290°C, but the melt temperature must not exceed 290°C because oxidative chain scission increases odour output and reduces adhesion to foil. Die-lip cleanliness is monitored with a handheld infrared pyrometer; a lip temperature deviation above 2°C across the die width causes non-uniform coat weight.

Heavy-Duty Shipping Sack Inner Ply: Impact Resistance at -20°C and Seal Integrity

For heavy-duty shipping sacks used in frozen poultry or chemical powder filling, the inner ply is a three-layer blown film with thickness 80–120 µm, produced with a 70/30 wt% C8-LLDPE/TJVL-0505 blend in the sealant layer and core. The 30 wt% VLDPE fraction lowers seal initiation and improves low-temperature flexibility, but it reduces machine-direction Elmendorf tear strength; the trade-off is quantified under ASTM D1922 and balanced by outer layers containing a multimodal C6-LLDPE with a higher z-average molecular weight. Extrusion is run on a 350 mm three-layer die with a 2.2 mm die gap, BUR 3.0:1, frost line height 600–900 mm, cooling air at 8–15°C, and melt temperature 200–215°C. Internal bubble stabilisation is required to prevent gel streaks and gauge variation. Impact failure is measured by ASTM D1709A, slow puncture by ASTM D5748, and seal strength by ASTM F88/F88M after sealing at 105–115°C and 0.3 MPa for 0.5 s. A low-temperature test at -20°C is required because seal force decay measured on a flat laboratory film does not transfer directly to filled sacks with gusset folds and dust contamination at the seal area.

The freeze-fill environment introduces condensation on the film surface, which is a known cause of seal area dust adhesion and inconsistent heat transfer. Pre-seal surface drying with filtered air at 35–45°C is specified before the sack enters the sealing station. If the sack is filled with a dusty powder, the sealant-layer ratio may be reduced toward 20 wt% TJVL-0505 because a VLDPE-rich seal surface is more susceptible to dust entrapment at the seal interface. The resulting loss in low-temperature flexibility is then compensated by increasing total film thickness by 10–15 µm rather than by raising the VLDPE fraction.

A 40–60 µm blown film for non-implantable medical device packaging requiring a low-temperature seal and controlled peel interface is constructed with a sealant layer containing 30 wt% TJVL-0505 and a C8-LLDPE core. The film is blown on a line installed in an ISO Class 8 cleanroom, with melt temperature kept at 185–205°C to limit oxidative byproducts. After converting, pouches are sealed at 115–125°C with a dwell time of 0.5 s and sealing pressure 0.35 MPa. Seal strength is evaluated under ASTM F88/F88M; dye penetration integrity is tested under ASTM F1929, and burst or leak integrity under ASTM F2096. Terminal sterilisation validation must follow ISO 11607-1:2019 and ISO 11607-2:2019. General-purpose TJVL-0505 does not by itself constitute a medical-grade designation; the supplier must provide lot-level data for cytotoxicity under ISO 10993-5 and, where required, endotoxin under ISO 10993-11. Gamma irradiation at 25–50 kGy changes peel consistency, so accelerated aging is performed under ASTM F1980 at a defined accelerated aging temperature not exceeding 60°C to verify peel transition and seal integrity over the labelled shelf life. Amine-based additive packages should be avoided because migration to the seal interface can alter peel strength and compromise visual seal uniformity.

Peel consistency in medical packaging depends on the crystallisation of the sealant layer after the seal bar opens. With TJVL-0505, the lower melting fraction can produce a broader peel-transition plateau than a C8-LLDPE sealant, but this must be confirmed by forced-peel testing on at least 30 pouches per lot. If delamination occurs in the sealant layer rather than at the seal interface, the coextruded layer adhesion is insufficient; the condition is called cohesive failure and is evaluated using a microscope at 10× magnification after peel. For ethylene oxide sterilisation, residual gas testing under ISO 10993-7 must be added to the packaging validation plan.

When TJVL-0505 Must Be Pre-Compounded Rather Than Dry-Blended for Cold-Chain Polypropylene Moulding

A pre-compounded PP impact-modification route uses a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 40:1 and two kneading blocks. The feed blend is 10–15 wt% TJVL-0505 and 85–90 wt% impact copolymer polypropylene. Barrel temperatures are set from 190°C at the feed throat to 220°C at the die, with screw speed 300 r/min and a throughput of 25 kg/h for a laboratory-scale 35 mm compounder; production-scale throughput must be scaled by volumetric capacity. Injection moulding of the compounded pellets is conducted on a machine with 1,500–2,500 kN clamp force, barrel temperatures 210–240°C, mould temperature 15–30°C, and cooling time 20–40 s depending on wall thickness. Notched Izod impact is measured under ISO 180/A:2023, tensile modulus under ISO 527-2:2012, and Vicat softening under ISO 306. A dry blend of similar composition is not recommended because VLDPE phase agglomeration creates inconsistent pellet fractions and increases injection moulding lot-to-lot variation; dispersion is confirmed on pellet fracture surfaces by scanning electron microscopy. For non-food industrial cold-chain pallets, no food-contact standard applies; if recycled content is incorporated, REACH SVHC declarations are required under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Published data for this specific grade in PP modification is limited; a supplier data package and a pilot compounding trial should be requested before specification.

In injection moulding, the cold mould temperature of 15–30°C is selected to shorten cycle time, but it increases freeze-off of the VLDPE-modified PP at thin ribs. If short shots appear at rib depths below 2 mm, the injection velocity profile is increased in the final 20% of fill rather than raising melt temperature beyond 240°C, which would degrade the VLDPE phase and lower Izod impact. Screw recovery time is monitored to ensure the compound does not remain in the barrel for more than 3 min at 220°C.
