Application of Sinopec Shanghai MDPE YGM091T

How Long-Term Hydrostatic Strength Classifies YGM091T for PE80 Gas Distribution Pipe?

Pipe extrusion converts YGM091T into medium-density polyethylene pressure pipe when the long-term hydrostatic strength at 20 °C meets the PE80 minimum required strength of 8.0 MPa under ISO 9080. The nominal melt mass-flow rate of 0.9 g/10 min at 190 °C and 2.16 kg per ISO 1133-1:2022 and the density of 0.934 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019 place the granulate in the viscosity range used for SDR 11 and SDR 17 small-to-medium-bore gas distribution pipe. The extrusion line uses a grooved-feed single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D and a spiral mandrel die. Melt temperature is maintained at 190–210 °C. Die head pressure is held below 25 MPa. Pipe sizing occurs in a vacuum calibration tank with water at 15–25 °C. Wall-thickness uniformity is logged by ultrasonic gauging every 1 m. The terminal product is yellow PE80 gas distribution pipe, commonly DN 32 mm to DN 110 mm with SDR 11, for buried gas networks operating at a design factor of 2.0.

Compounding at the pipe plant uses 100 parts by mass of YGM091T with 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch and 0.05–0.10 wt% antioxidant masterbatch. Calcium carbonate filler is not added because filler interfaces reduce slow crack growth resistance under ISO 13479. Compliance for gas supply piping includes ISO 4437 for PE pipes, ASTM D2513 for thermoplastic gas pressure pipe, and ISO 9080 for long-term hydrostatic strength regression. The notched pipe test under ISO 13479 is reported to the utility as time-to-failure at the specified hoop stress. No single universal acceptance time applies across all gas distribution operators. The limiting operational boundary is low-temperature impact. The pipe should not be installed below -10 °C without additional impact verification. Butt-fusion joints require a flat fusion bead free of hollow voids because MDPE with density 0.934 g/cm³ cools more slowly than HDPE and can produce uneven bead geometry in windy site conditions.

In flat-die geomembrane lines running YGM091T at a nominal thickness of 1.5 mm, the resin is compounded with 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch and 0.2–0.5 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer masterbatch. The blend is fed to a single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D, barrier screw, and hydraulic screen changer. Melt temperature is controlled at 220–235 °C. A slot die with internal deckles and a three-roll calender stack sets sheet thickness in 0.05 mm increments. Beta transmission gauges feed back to die bolt actuators. The terminal product is a smooth or textured geomembrane for canal linings, pond liners, and secondary containment pads. The controlling long-term property is not initial tensile strength but the notched constant tensile load resistance tested under ASTM D5397. MDPE geomembranes are selected where construction strains and subgrade settlement require higher elongation than HDPE while retaining weld integrity.

Seaming of the installed geomembrane is performed by hot wedge or extrusion fillet welding at weld-track temperature 380–420 °C. A destructive peel test per ISO 13953 is conducted on a trail weld every 100 m of seam. The acceptance criterion is a break in the parent sheet rather than in the weld zone. The main production bottleneck in flat-die sheet lines is microgel buildup at the die lip when melt temperature exceeds 245 °C for more than 30 min. Operators schedule lip cleaning after every 8 h or after any gauge deviation above ± 4%.

Thick-Walled Rotomolded Chemical Tanks: Oven Dwell, Axis Ratio, and the Low-MFR Sintering Constraint

Rotational molding of YGM091T has a narrower densification window than typical 4–6 g/10 min rotomolding grades because the 0.9 g/10 min melt mass-flow rate raises zero-shear viscosity and slows bubble coalescence. The resin is ground to 35 mesh with a top size of 0.5 mm and a powder bulk density above 0.35 g/cm³. The dry blend contains 100 phr YGM091T, 0.10 phr hindered phenolic antioxidant, 0.10 phr phosphite processing stabilizer, and 0.15 phr zinc stearate acid scavenger. A two-axis shuttle rotomolding machine with a 2.0 m swing and 4:1 primary-to-secondary axis ratio heats the mold until peak internal air temperature reaches 195–210 °C. Oven setpoint is 260–280 °C, and dwell at setpoint is typically 18–30 min for an 8 mm wall thickness. Cooling occurs in forced air to 115 °C, then water mist to below 80 °C. Uncontrolled cooling through the 70–90 °C crystallization band generates warpage and corner stress concentration. The terminal part is a vertical cylindrical chemical storage tank with capacity 5,000 L and a molded-in threaded boss. It is tested under ASTM D1998 for rotationally molded polyethylene tanks and subjected to a 90-day chemical contact test at 40 °C with the target service fluid. ESCR is evaluated under ASTM D1693 Condition C. Cold-climate handling is checked with Izod impact at -20 °C per ASTM D256.

Production-scale rotomolding lines report pinhole clusters along the inner wall as the primary failure mode when low-MFR powder is used without sufficient internal air-temperature hold. The corrective action is to delay the start of biaxial rotation until the mold surface reaches 150 °C and to extend the peak internal air-temperature plateau by 5–8 min relative to standard 4–6 g/10 min grades. The upper processing boundary is set by oxidative degradation. Internal air temperature above 210 °C for more than 10 min produces amber discoloration and brittle failure in the threaded boss. Published data for this specific low-MFR MDPE configuration in rotomolding is limited, so a pilot-scale oven cycle mapping on the intended mold geometry is required before production qualification.

When extrusion blow molding of flat-walled industrial packagings permits a medium-density polyethylene with 0.9 g/10 min melt mass-flow rate, YGM091T can be evaluated for jerrycans, open-top drums, and automotive fluid reservoirs where the wall is below 2.5 mm. The resin is blended with 0.05–0.15 wt% siloxane processing aid and 1.0–2.0 wt% color masterbatch. Moisture content is held below 200 ppm before hopper entry. An accumulator-head blow molding line with an 80 mm screw diameter and 24:1 L/D runs melt temperature at 185–200 °C, parison swell 20–30%, and blow air pressure 0.6–0.8 MPa. The pinch-off weld is trimmed while hot. Weld-line thickness must remain at least 70% of the nominal wall thickness. The terminal product is a 10 L UN 3H1 jerrycan for non-hazardous water treatment chemicals, tested to UN Manual of Tests and Criteria stacking and drop provisions. Chemical compatibility is verified by a 90-day storage trial with the specific packaged liquid at 40 °C. ESCR under ASTM D1693 Method A serves only as comparative assurance because the weld zone and pinch-off seam dominate long-term failure. The operational boundary is chemical loading above 60% fill with aggressive surfactants. Such fluids require fluorinated surface treatment or an alternative high-density grade with a lower ESCR acceptance threshold.

Where Marine Buoy Molding Demands Impact Resistance After Foam Filling

Marine buoys and floats are rotomolded from YGM091T for moderate wave climates, with a wall thickness of 4–6 mm. The dry blend contains 100 phr YGM091T, 0.3 phr UV stabilizer masterbatch, and 0.1 phr processing stabilizer. No hygroscopic filler is used because surface moisture on the powder creates internal pores and reduces buoyancy. The mold is rotated at 8 rpm primary and 2 rpm secondary until peak internal air temperature reaches 190–200 °C, then cooled to 85 °C before demolding. After demolding, a closed-cell polyurethane foam is injected. The foam exotherm must not raise the inner wall above 70 °C for more than 30 min or wall softening occurs at the foam interface. The terminal product is a mooring buoy rated for 500 kg gross buoyancy. Falling-dart impact on cut plaques at -20 °C is tested under ISO 6603-2. UV weathering is tested under ISO 4892-3 cycle 6 for 2,000 h. The finished float is submerged at 1 m for 24 h. Water uptake above 0.1 wt% is rejected because it indicates a wall crack, a leaking insert, or foam open-cell content outside the specified 10%.
