Gel-spinning operations that convert QUPE 02 into ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene filaments begin with dissolution of the resin in decalin or paraffin oil at a polymer concentration of 5–10 wt%. The solution is stabilized with a hindered phenolic antioxidant at 0.1–0.5 wt% relative to polymer mass and is metered through a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with a length-to-diameter ratio of 32:1–52:1. Barrel temperatures are maintained between 130–180 °C to achieve homogeneous solvation without thermal degradation. The solution passes through a 10–30 μm sintered metal screen pack before entering a spinneret with capillary diameters of 0.5–1.0 mm. Gel filaments are quenched in water at 5–20 °C, extracted with n-hexane or trichloroethylene to remove residual solvent, and then hot-drawn in multiple stages to cumulative draw ratios of 30:1–80:1. Yarn tensile performance is measured according to ASTM D885 and ISO 2062. For ballistic panels, finished product testing is performed against NIJ 0101.06 or NIJ 0101.07; cut-resistant gloves are classified under EN 388:2016. Terminal product types include woven ballistic fabric, cut-resistant gloves and sleeves, maritime mooring lines, and high-tenacity fishing lines. Production-scale experience shows that gel fracture is the dominant failure mode when the first-stage draw ratio is increased too rapidly for the specific solvent used, and residual solvent level in the extracted gel yarn tends to drift when extraction bath temperature falls outside 25–35 °C.
Wet-process lithium-ion separator production using QUPE 02 begins with a compound containing 20–35 wt% UHMWPE, 65–80 wt% paraffin oil, and, where inline ceramic coating is not used, 5–10 wt% precipitated silica. A hindered phenolic stabilizer is added at 0.1–0.3 wt% relative to polymer mass. The melt blend is extruded through a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 32:1–40:1 at 180–220 °C, cast onto a chill roll at 10–30 °C, and biaxially stretched in a machine-direction step followed by a transverse-direction step at 90–120 °C. Drawing below 110 °C produces uneven deformation because the paraffin oil phase stiffens non-uniformly, resulting in local thickness variation greater than ±1.5 μm and reduced Gurley uniformity. Extraction with methylene chloride or n-hexane removes the paraffin oil, after which the film is heat-set at 120–130 °C. Automotive separator qualification requires IATF 16949 supply-chain discipline, cell safety evaluation under IEC 62660-3, and tensile characterization of the separator film under ASTM D882; porosity is commonly controlled by Gurley air-permeance values expressed in seconds per 100 mL. Terminal products are 5–20 μm microporous separator membranes for EV cells, energy storage systems, and consumer lithium-ion batteries. On production lines, pinhole formation is the most frequent defect when residual oil content before transverse stretching moves outside a 10–15 wt% target, and web breaks increase sharply when the transverse-direction draw ratio exceeds 6:1 at temperatures below 95 °C. Published data for the exact paraffin oil phase equilibrium of this specific QUPE 02 grade are limited; the values above reflect commonly reported industrial wet-process settings for UHMWPE membrane lines.
In porous tube and sheet sintering, QUPE 02 powder with a particle size range of 80–300 μm is dry-blended with a hindered phenolic antioxidant at 0.1–0.3 wt% and charged into a mold cavity without an external binder. The tool is closed with 0.1–0.5 MPa contact pressure and heated to 170–190 °C for 30–60 min depending on the thickest wall section. Sintering proceeds by partial fusion at particle boundaries without full densification, producing interconnected porosity with a mean pore size typically between 5–80 μm depending on powder fraction and heating rate. Cooling is carried out under pressure at 0.5–1.0 °C/min to below 80 °C to prevent warpage and non-uniform shrinkage. For hydraulic and pneumatic filter elements, multi-pass retention is evaluated according to ISO 16889 and bubble-point behavior according to ISO 2942. For components intended for repeated food-contact use, base-polymer compliance is assessed under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011, subject to the migration limits applicable to the antioxidant package. Terminal products include wastewater aeration diffusers, dust filter tubes, silencer elements, acid mist eliminators, and suction filter rods. Batch-to-batch shrinkage control on commercial sintering lines generally relies on monitoring the D90/D10 ratio of the incoming powder rather than a single mean particle size; when this ratio drifts outside 2.0–3.5, pore collapse or excessive pressure drop across the finished filter element is observed before dimensional tolerances fail.
Charging compression molds with QUPE 02 at ambient powder temperatures below 30 °C reduces oxidative degradation during the subsequent heating cycle. The formulation consists of 100 phr QUPE 02, hindered phenolic antioxidant at 0.1–0.3 wt%, calcium stearate at 0.1–0.3 wt% as an acid scavenger and mold-release aid, and, where outdoor storage is specified, carbon black at 0.2–0.5 wt%. The mold is heated to 200–220 °C under a pressure of 5–10 MPa and held for 20–60 min depending on the thickest cross-section. Cooling to below 80 °C at 0.5–1.5 °C/min is required to obtain void-free plates with consistent internal density. Abrasive wear resistance is characterized by ASTM G65-16e1 dry-sand rubber-wheel mass loss, tensile properties by ASTM D638-14, and molecular-weight-related processability by ASTM D4020-18. Molding-grade classification is specified under ISO 11542-2. Terminal products include chute liners, hopper liners, conveyor wear strips, chain guide rails, and crane outrigger pads. The critical process conflict on production lines is the narrow fusion window: exposure above 220 °C or hold times beyond 90 min elevate the soluble fraction and reduce impact toughness, while temperatures below 195 °C leave visible powder-boundary defects in machined surfaces. The zero-shear viscosity of UHMWPE in this processing window is commonly reported above 108 Pa·s, which prevents flow-induced mixing and requires compression rather than injection molding.
| Downstream configuration | Typical addition ratio | Critical process limit | Primary test method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gel-spun filament | 5–10 wt% polymer in solvent; antioxidant 0.1–0.5 wt% | Gel fracture when first-stage draw is raised too rapidly; extraction bath outside 25–35 °C shifts residual solvent | ASTM D885 |
| Wet-process separator | 20–35 wt% QUPE 02; 65–80 wt% paraffin oil; optional silica 5–10 wt% | Transverse draw below 95 °C above 6:1 causes web break; residual oil outside 10–15 wt% causes pinholes | ASTM D882 |
| Porous sintered filter | 100 phr QUPE 02; antioxidant 0.1–0.3 wt% | Sintering above 190 °C collapses pores; cooling above 1.0 °C/min creates warpage | ISO 16889 |
| Compression moulded wear liner | 100 phr QUPE 02; antioxidant 0.1–0.3 wt%; CaSt 0.1–0.3 wt% | Melt above 220 °C or hold > 90 min causes chain scission; below 195 °C incomplete fusion | ASTM G65-16e1 |
For slurry pipe diameters above 200 mm, ram extrusion is preferred because QUPE 02 exhibits elastic plug flow rather than shear-thinning melt flow. The ram extruder is configured with a barrel temperature of 180–200 °C and a die temperature of 190–220 °C. The formulation uses 100 phr QUPE 02, hindered phenolic antioxidant at 0.1–0.5 wt%, and a processing aid at 0.05–0.3 wt% to reduce wall friction during the reciprocating stroke. Ram speed is controlled so that the die exit temperature does not exceed 220 °C; above this threshold, die-lip surface cracking appears and melt strength drops because chain scission begins to dominate. Extruded pipe is cooled in a spray bath and cut to length with a traveling saw. Where a pressure rating is assigned, long-term hydrostatic strength is evaluated according to ISO 9080 methodology; material classification follows ISO 12162-1, and dimensional tolerances are checked under ISO 11922-1. Terminal products include slurry transport pipes, tailings lines, chemical transfer pipes, and suction hoses. Production-scale failures are most commonly linked to moisture adsorption above 0.02 wt% before feeding, which produces internal voids, and to wall-thickness variation when the ram stroke discontinuities align with the feeding interval.
Rod stock produced from QUPE 02 by ram extrusion is used for machined wear components where creep resistance under load is required. The rod is extruded at 190–220 °C, annealed at 100–120 °C for 6–12 h, and, when enhanced dimensional stability is specified, crosslinked by gamma irradiation at 50–100 kGy or electron beam at 60–150 kGy. Irradiation is followed by a remelting or annealing step at 130–150 °C to reduce residual free radicals; this step limits oxidative degradation during machining and in service. A machining allowance of 0.5–1.5 mm from the extruded skin is removed to eliminate surface oxidation and flow lines. The rod formulation is 100 phr QUPE 02 and hindered phenolic antioxidant at 0.1–0.3 wt%; calcium stearate is omitted where food-contact status is required. Compliance for food processing guides and wear strips is evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011, provided the antioxidant package meets the migration limits. Tensile and elongation of machined specimens are tested under ISO 527-2:2012, and hardness under ISO 868. Terminal products include pump wear plates, beverage conveyor guide rails, valve seats, and scraper blades. The operational boundary is that gamma-crosslinked QUPE 02 exhibits increased notch sensitivity and reduced machinability; components exposed to oxidizing acids at temperatures above 60 °C require extraction testing before specifying crosslinked rod stock.
