Application of SIBUR HDPE HD12500 LH

Dairy and Still Beverage Closure Systems on High-Cavitation Hot-Runner Tools

In the injection moulding of single-piece closures for still water, pasteurised milk, UHT dairy drinks, and ambient juice, the melt flow rate of 12.5 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg measured per ISO 1133-1:2022 and density in the 0.950–0.955 g/cm³ range measured per ISO 1183-1:2019 set the flow-length and cycle-time boundary for multi-cavity tools. For natural closures the neat resin fraction is 100.0 wt%; for coloured closures the neat resin fraction is reduced to 97.0–98.0 wt%, a colour masterbatch is introduced at 2.0–3.0 wt%, and an erucamide slip concentrate is added at 0.05–0.10 wt%. Post-industrial regrind from the same food-contact production cell is incorporated up to 30 wt% only when the feedstock is generated and reused within the same closed-loop system and migration testing under EU 10/2011 and 21 CFR 177.1520(c) remains valid for the closure. Production is typically run on an accumulator-assisted injection machine with clamp force between 250 and 500 t, a 48- to 96-cavity valve-gated hot runner, screw length-to-diameter ratio of 22:1–25:1, and injection speed of 80–150 mm/s. Melt temperature is held at 200–230 °C, mould cooling water at 8–15 °C, holding pressure at 40–60 MPa, and back pressure at 5–10 MPa; cycle times of 6–12 s are attainable. Batch-to-batch variation in melt flow rate of ±0.8 g/10 min is normally corrected by adjusting melt temperature by ±5 °C rather than by increasing holding pressure. End products include tamper-evident screw caps, push-pull sports caps, and snap-on closures for dairy and still beverage containers with neck finishes from 28 mm to 38 mm. The grade is not recommended for carbonated soft drink closures unless carbon dioxide retention is validated on the finished cap at the target torquing condition.

What Limits Cycle Time When Wall Sections Drop Below 0.9 mm?

Thin-wall injection moulding of dairy cups, fruit portion packs, deli rounds, and spread containers from SIBUR HDPE HD12500 LH is constrained primarily by the solidification window created by the grade’s thermal diffusivity and by the uniformity of the tool cooling circuit. The melt temperature window narrows to approximately ±5 °C around 230–250 °C in wall sections between 0.6 and 0.9 mm: below 225 °C short shots appear at the rim, while above 255 °C flash occurs in stack moulds with clamp force below 800 t. Accumulator injection speeds of 350–600 mm/s are required to achieve flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios up to 150:1 in 4+4 or 8+8 stack tools, and screw decompression is set at 3–5 mm to prevent gate drool. Mould cooling water is run at 5–10 °C, holding pressure is applied at 60–90 MPa for 0.3–0.8 s, and total cycle time is held within 3.5–7.0 s. The combined masterbatch addition is 2.5–4.5 wt%, consisting of a nucleating masterbatch at 0.5–1.5 wt% and a colour masterbatch at 2.0–3.0 wt%; the neat resin fraction makes up the balance to 100.0 wt%. Differential scanning calorimetry per ISO 11357-3:2018 is used to verify the active nucleating package and the resulting crystallisation peak shift. Slip agent is kept below 0.15 wt% of the total compound because higher levels create interlaminar delamination at high shear rates. Post-industrial regrind is limited to 30 wt% only when generated from clean start-up and rejected containers on the same line. Compliance is maintained under EU 10/2011, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, and EN 13428. End products include round deli containers, rectangular snack packs, and shallow dairy dessert cups with wall thickness from 0.6 to 1.2 mm. The main control variable for warpage is the core/cavity mould temperature difference, which is kept below 5 °C, while hot-runner pressure drop is balanced within ±2 MPa across all gates.

When Post-Consumer Recyclate Replaces Virgin HDPE in Heavy-Duty Crate Moulds

Production of returnable distribution crates, logistics trays, and pallet sleeves from SIBUR HDPE HD12500 LH is run on single-face injection machines with clamp force between 800 and 1600 t because wall thickness from 3.0 to 6.0 mm and multi-ribbed bases require controlled hold-pressure decay rather than very high injection speed. Tooling uses a cold sprue bush or a valve-gated hot runner at 1–4 cavities; melt temperature is set at 220–260 °C, mould temperature at 15–30 °C, holding pressure at 50–80 MPa, and cooling time at 20–40 s. Post-industrial regrind is incorporated at 20–50 wt%, while post-consumer recyclate is limited to 20–35 wt% because incoming melt viscosity variability of ±15% shifts shot weight by ±0.5% on four-cavity tools unless adaptive shot-size correction is active. Carbon black masterbatch is dosed at 2.0–3.0 wt%, and a hindered amine light stabilizer masterbatch at 2.0–4.0 wt% is added when crates are stored outdoors beyond 12 months. Compliance is anchored to REACH Annex XVII and EU Directive 94/62/EC, with recycled-content claims verified under ISO 14021:2016; direct food-contact crates are outside scope unless a separate migration assessment under EU 10/2011 is completed. Charpy impact is measured at 23 °C by ISO 179-1/1eA and should remain above 4.0 kJ/m²; above 35 wt% post-consumer recyclate, impact strength becomes the limiting property. End products include stack-nest bottle crates, bakery trays, fish boxes, pallet side walls, and agricultural harvest crates. The primary field failure is incomplete fill at corner bosses when recyclate lot melt flow rate deviates from the 12.5 g/10 min reference; each recyclate lot is pre-tested at 190 °C/2.16 kg and the virgin/recyclate ratio corrected by ±5 wt% before tool start-up.

Packing Pressure, Not Melt Temperature, Determines Detergent Cap Dimensional Stability

Injection-moulded measuring cups, laundry detergent caps, trigger spray collars, and spouted closures for non-food chemical formulations use SIBUR HDPE HD12500 LH because the 12.5 g/10 min melt flow rate allows narrow thread features to fill at moderate melt temperature. The decisive processing parameter is the packing-pressure curve: cavity pressure sensors are placed behind the thread ring 0.5 mm from the gate, and the packing setpoint is held at 45–70 MPa for 2–5 s, followed by a pressure decay of 10–15 MPa/s to prevent overpacking of the cap skirt. Melt temperature is maintained at 200–230 °C with a clamp force of 120–350 t and 16- to 64-cavity cold-runner or hot-runner tooling, mould cooling at 10–15 °C, and total cycle time from 8 to 15 s. Colour masterbatch is dosed at 2.0–4.0 wt%, slip agent at 0.05–0.15 wt%, and the neat resin fraction is the balance to 100.0 wt%; regrind is held at or below 30 wt% because higher fractions reduce environmental stress crack resistance in aggressive surfactant solutions. Chemical packaging under EU CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and REACH requires compatibility testing of the finished cap with the filled formulation; child-resistant closures, where specified, are validated under ISO 8317:2015. The grade is suitable for mild to moderate alkalinity and non-oxidising surfactant systems, but if the formulation contains strong oxidisers, high aromatic solvent loadings, or hypochlorite bleach above 2.0 wt%, environmental stress crack testing under ASTM D1693 condition B is required before commercialisation. End products include measuring cup caps, two-piece flip-top caps, trigger sprayer shrouds, and dose chamber closures for liquid detergent, fabric softener, and non-food cleaner packaging. The primary field failure is cap skirt deformation from unbalanced clamping; the acceptance limit is maximum out-of-roundness of 0.25 mm at the open end within 24 h after ejection.

For personal care and cosmetic rigid packaging, including jars, overcap shells, deodorant stick housings, and lotion spouts, the neat resin fraction of SIBUR HDPE HD12500 LH is set at the balance to 100.0 wt% after colour masterbatch at 2.0–3.0 wt% and in-house regrind from the same tool that is limited to 20 wt% to maintain gloss uniformity and sink-free sidewalls. Compliance is set by REACH and by packaging compatibility testing under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 when the pack contacts the cosmetic formulation; heavy-metal restrictions follow EU Directive 94/62/EC. Moulding is performed on all-electric injection machines with clamp force of 100–300 t and 24- to 64-cavity valve-gated hot runners, using melt temperature 200–225 °C, mould temperature 10–15 °C, injection speed 60–120 mm/s, holding pressure 35–55 MPa, and total cycle times of 7–12 s. High-gloss sidewall quality requires gas-venting groove depths no larger than 0.02 mm, because deeper vents create visible witness lines at the melt flow front. End products include thick-wall jars with wall thickness from 1.5 to 3.0 mm, thin-wall overwrap caps, and snap-fit spouted closures for shampoos and skin cleansers. Published data for the interaction between mould release residues and labelling adhesion on high-gloss HDPE jars is limited; adhesion validation should be performed on every new tool surface treatment.

Open-top pail production from SIBUR HDPE HD12500 LH on 1- to 4-cavity injection machines with clamp force between 500 and 1200 t uses a neat resin fraction that makes up the balance to 100.0 wt% after post-industrial regrind up to 30 wt%, colour masterbatch at 2.0–4.0 wt%, and UV stabilizer masterbatch at 2.0–3.0 wt% when outdoor storage is specified. Melt temperature is held at 200–240 °C, mould temperature at 15–25 °C, holding pressure at 45–70 MPa, and cooling time at 15–25 s for pail wall thickness between 2.0 and 3.5 mm. Dangerous goods packaging is tested and certified under the UN 1H2 designation, with drop testing in accordance with ISO 2248:1985 and stacking resistance verified under ISO 2234:2000; food-contact pails additionally comply with EU 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, while all packaging is subject to EU Directive 94/62/EC and REACH. The critical processing boundary is top-load strength: increasing regrind fraction above 30 wt% reduces top-load capacity by approximately 10–15%, measured after conditioning at 40 °C for 48 h on filled and closed pails. End products include open-top pails from 5 to 25 L, tamper-evident lids with tear bands, food-ingredient containers, and water-based emulsion pails for paints and coatings. The primary field failure is base cracking at the ejector pin location, which is controlled by maintaining ejector speed below 100 mm/s and using air-assisted ejection on pails with base diameters above 300 mm.
