    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Shenzhen Zhongs ABS MA915-HR is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer resin supplied in pellet form for injection moulding and, where melt viscosity permits, selected extrusion operations. The grade carries the ISO 1043-1 short name ABS and, on the basis of the producer’s HR suffix, is positioned as a heat-resistant ABS rather than a general-purpose low-gloss or electroplating grade. Publicly available product-specific certificates were not reproduced for this document; therefore, numerical intervals cited below are drawn from industrial reference bands for high-heat ABS grades under the corresponding ISO and ASTM test methods. The user should verify exact lot-specific melt volume-flow rate, tensile, and thermal values against the Shenzhen Zhongs certificate of analysis before tooling or process parameters are fixed.

How Does the MA915-HR Designation Align with ABS Moulding and Extrusion Classifications?

Under ISO 2580-1:2018, ABS moulding and extrusion materials are designated by a data-block system that encodes water absorption, melt mass-flow rate, Izod impact, and heat deflection temperature. A heat-resistant grade such as MA915-HR is expected to exhibit a higher Vicat softening temperature and/or HDT than a general-purpose ABS at the same rubber level, achieved by increasing the acrylonitrile content or reducing the rubber-phase particle size during emulsion polymerisation. Typical compositional intervals for ABS are styrene 40–70% by mass, acrylonitrile 15–35%, and polybutadiene 5–30%; the exact MA915-HR balance is not publicly disclosed. The melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220°C/10 kg for high-heat ABS commonly falls between 4 cm³/10 min and 20 cm³/10 min; lower values are typical if the grade is designed for thick-section retention but may require higher injection pressure. Density under ISO 1183-1:2019 is normally 1.03–1.07 g/cm³. Tensile stress at yield under ISO 527-2:2012 is typically 38–48 MPa for high-heat ABS, and ISO 180/A notched Izod impact is typically 12–30 kJ/m² at 23°C. These ranges are not product guarantees; they define the classification envelope into which MA915-HR is most plausibly placed.

Moisture uptake in ABS MA915-HR, like other ABS grades, is governed by equilibrium humidity and must be controlled before melt processing. At 23°C and 50% RH, ABS can reach 0.20–0.35% moisture. For injection moulding and extrusion, the melt-phase target should be ≤0.05% moisture to avoid splay, surface silver streaks, and local polybutadiene oxidative embrittlement. Production-scale drying is normally performed in a closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point below -30°C, using an inlet air temperature of 80°C for 2–4 h at a bed depth of 30–60 mm. If the material has been stored at RH > 60% or in unsealed containers, the drying time should be increased to 4–6 h and verified with a moisture analyzer based on ISO 15512:2019.

The barrel temperature window for high-heat ABS is constrained by the competing requirements of low melt viscosity and thermal stability. Melt temperatures below 230°C risk high injection pressure and incomplete cavity replication, while melt temperatures above 260°C accelerate resin yellowing and polybutadiene degradation, particularly with residence times exceeding 5–8 min. On a 40 mm single-screw injection unit, typical barrel setpoints are 220–240°C at the feed throat and 240–255°C at the nozzle, with a screw length-to-diameter ratio of 18:1–22:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1–2.8:1. For extrusion compounding, co-rotating twin-screw extruders with L/D 32–44 and specific energy inputs of 0.15–0.25 kWh/kg are used; high-heat grades require tighter melt-temperature control at the die because deviations above 270°C produce gel-like degraded rubber particles.

Short-Term Property Benchmarks in Dry As-Moulded State

Short-term property reporting for ABS MA915-HR should follow the injection-moulding specimen preparation protocols of ISO 294-1:2017. The comparative reference intervals below are based on dry as-moulded specimens and are not a substitute for supplier certificates.

The lower melt volume-flow rate of high-heat ABS reduces flow length and should be considered in thin-wall tools. Injection moulding machines of 60 tonnes clamp force or larger typically require melt pressures of 80–120 MPa to fill complex housings, while packing pressures above 50–70 MPa reduce sink marks and improve dimensional stability.

Electrical enclosure and small-appliance housing grades require a balance of rigidity, dimensional stability, and resistance to screw boss cracking during assembly. ABS MA915-HR is suitable for non-load-bearing enclosures where the service temperature is below the HDT/Ae value of the grade and where occasional contact with dilute acids, alkalis, and aliphatic hydrocarbons is expected but aromatic solvents, esters, ketones, and chlorinated solvents must be avoided because they attack the SAN matrix. Typical applications in the ABS class include vacuum cleaner housings, washing machine panels, air-conditioner front panels, power-tool casings, and automotive interior trim. Qualification for electrical enclosures is normally assessed under UL 94 HB or V-0, or by IEC 60695-2-12 glow-wire testing at 650°C to 960°C depending on the end-product standard. The HR designation may allow short-term thermal exposure up to 95–105°C without deformation under no-load or low-load conditions. Long-term heat aging of ABS at 80–100°C can induce surface chalking and loss of impact after 300–1000 h depending on stabilizer package, ventilation, and part thickness; published data for MA915-HR under prolonged 110°C service is limited.

What Distinguishes This Grade from Commodity ABS, HIPS, and PC/ABS in Enclosure Loading?

Compared with a commodity ABS, a high-heat ABS such as MA915-HR typically increases HDT/Ae by 8–12°C and Vicat B50 by 5–10°C, but the trade-off is a reduction in melt volume-flow rate and a narrower injection-moulding window. Against high-impact polystyrene, ABS retains higher resistance to stress cracking and shows better retention of impact after light surface solvents; HIPS may exhibit density near 1.04 g/cm³ and tensile yield of 20–30 MPa, lower than ABS. Against PC/ABS, MA915-HR is expected to show lower HDT and toughness than a 50/50 PC/ABS blend, but it provides lower melt viscosity and lower density, often allowing shorter cycle times in thick sections. In chemical resistance, ABS is not suitable for continuous immersion in concentrated oxidizing acids, while PC/ABS may be more sensitive to alkaline hydrolysis; the SAN matrix in MA915-HR confers better aliphatic hydrocarbon resistance than PC/ABS but lower resistance to aromatic solvents than polyolefins. These differences must be verified under end-use chemical contact because the rubber phase is selectively attacked by unsaturated oils and strong oxidizers.

When the Processing Window Narrows: Gate Freeze, Shrinkage, and Clamp Force

High-heat ABS grades often narrow the processing window relative to general-purpose ABS. Gate freeze time is a function of mould temperature and part thickness; for a 2.0 mm wall at a mould temperature of 70°C, gate freeze in ABS may occur within 2–5 s, while high-heat grades with higher Vicat may require mould temperatures of 70–90°C to avoid premature freeze and cold-flow marks. Clamp force in injection moulding of ABS is normally calculated from projected area at 0.5–0.8 tonnes/cm²; a tool with a projected area of 300 cm² therefore requires 150–240 tonnes of clamp force. Mould shrinkage under ISO 294-4:2018 for high-heat ABS is typically 0.4–0.7%, with higher values in the flow direction and lower values transverse to flow. Hot-runner systems should be internally heated and capable of maintaining manifold temperatures of 230–250°C; no sharp dead spots are permissible because residence times greater than 8 min generate yellow-brown degradation streaks. Vent depth for ABS is usually 0.02–0.04 mm, and clamping pressure should be adjusted to prevent flash while allowing gas escape. Screw recovery speed should be kept below 0.8 m/s to avoid excessive shear heating and localized overheating above 270°C.

Regulatory Status and Operator Exposure Limits

Shenzhen Zhongs ABS MA915-HR, if intended for consumer goods, must be evaluated under the applicable chemical-management frameworks: EU REACH Annex XVII, RoHS 2011/65/EU, and, only if food-contact certification is specifically declared by the producer, EU 10/2011. ABS does not ordinarily contain halogenated flame retardants in general-purpose grades; where a flame-retardant additive package is present, the grade may be subject to additional restrictions on decabromodiphenyl ether or antimony trioxide under RoHS or REACH. During melt processing, ABS emits styrene, acrylonitrile, and butadiene decomposition products; local exhaust ventilation should maintain workplace air below the relevant occupational exposure limits. Under EN 689:2018-based monitoring, 8-hour time-weighted averages for styrene should remain below 20 ppm or the applicable national limit. The material should not be processed above 270°C, and purge should use a lower-viscosity ABS or SAN purge compound rather than polyethylene, which can contaminate subsequent mouldings. Publication of exact REACH SVHC content for MA915-HR is the responsibility of Shenzhen Zhongs; no public SVHC list was available at the time of drafting.
