    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Shenzhen Zhongs ABS 951-AF is a pelletized acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied primarily for injection molding and selected extrusion operations. The grade designation 951-AF is the manufacturer’s model code for a specific melt-flow and additive configuration within the ABS product range. Because the complete ISO 2580-2 datasheet for this exact designation is not present in the open documentation reviewed for this entry, the property bands in the following sections are presented as representative of unfilled, medium-to-high-flow ABS and are labelled accordingly. The batch certificate of analysis and the current manufacturer product data sheet remain the controlling specifications for acceptance.

How Does the 951-AF Flow Envelope Affect Mold Filling and Screw Recovery?

For unfilled ABS in this flow classification, the melt volume-flow rate measured at 220 °C under a 10 kg load in accordance with ISO 1133-1:2022 is usually expected to fall between 15 cm³/10 min and 35 cm³/10 min. A grade positioned in the upper half of that range reduces the pressure required to fill thin-wall cavities, but the same molecular-weight distribution and rubber-phase modifications that raise flow generally lower room-temperature notched impact resistance relative to a low-flow ABS. On a hydraulic injection molding machine with a 20:1 L/D general-purpose screw and a nominal wall thickness of 0.8 mm, the higher-flow product is evaluated by monitoring peak hydraulic pressure at identical injection velocity and melt temperature. Published data for this specific 951-AF configuration is limited; therefore, mold-filling predictions should be generated from pressure-specific-volume-temperature data rather than from melt volume-flow rate alone.

Capillary rheometry on similar high-flow ABS at 220 °C and an apparent shear rate of 1000 s⁻¹ commonly records apparent melt viscosity between 100 Pa·s and 250 Pa·s. The lot-specific shear viscosity of ABS 951-AF should be measured under ISO 11443:2021. High shear sensitivity assists the filling of long flow paths but also produces additional shear heating, so barrel midsection temperatures are maintained toward the lower end of the ABS processing range while the nozzle is held at the required final melt temperature.

Pre-drying is mandatory when the product has been exposed to ambient moisture or when surface-quality requirements are tight. The pellets are dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point at or below −30 °C at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h, targeting residual moisture below 0.1% by mass in accordance with ISO 15512:2019 or an equivalent Karl Fischer procedure. A hopper dryer without desiccant media is not sufficient at relative humidity above 60% RH. Overdrying above 95 °C or residence times beyond 8 h can cause pellet softening, bridging, and surface yellowing. Moisture-related defects appear as splay, silver streaks, and loss of surface gloss, while thermal degradation appears as brown or black streaking with a sharp acrid odor at the nozzle.

Thermal Degradation Pathways and Barrel Residence-Time Constraints for 951-AF

Melt processing of ABS must avoid prolonged exposure above 240 °C because the polybutadiene phase undergoes thermo-oxidative degradation. The recommended barrel set-point profile for a medium-walled electrical enclosure is 200 °C, 215 °C, 220 °C, and 225 °C from rear zone to nozzle, with mold temperature between 40 °C and 60 °C. For thin-wall parts, melt temperature may be raised to 235 °C, but cumulative residence time should remain below 8 min, and screw peripheral speed should be held below 0.3 m/s to limit shear heating. Hot-runner systems should use externally heated manifolds with closed-loop thermocouples, and dead spots or unheated valve-gate tips must be eliminated because stagnant melt degrades and intermittently releases black specks into the melt stream. A reverse-taper nozzle and positive shutoff prevent drool and reduce oxygen exposure.

Tooling for 951-AF in thin-wall applications normally uses valve-gated hot runners or tunnel gates. Gate diameter is typically 0.5–0.8 times the part wall thickness, and gate land length should not exceed 1.0 mm. Venting channels with depths of 0.02–0.05 mm are required to prevent gas burns. Draft angles of 0.5–1.0° are used for textured surfaces, and ejection area is sized for an ejection pressure below 0.8 MPa. Flow-direction mold shrinkage for unfilled ABS of this class is generally 0.3–0.7% per ASTM D955, with transverse shrinkage in the range of 0.4–0.8%. Shrinkage anisotropy contributes to flat-part warpage and should be evaluated with mold-flow simulation using measured shrinkage coefficients. Post-mold annealing at 70 °C for 2 h may reduce internal stress but can produce additional dimensional movement.

Color operations with ABS 951-AF require an SAN- or ABS-compatible carrier when masterbatch is used. Let-down ratios of 2% to 4% are common, but polyethylene-based masterbatch carriers can lower impact strength and create delamination at elevated addition levels. Titanium dioxide total pigment loadings above 5% can increase melt viscosity and reduce weld-line strength. Batch-to-batch color accuracy is controlled against spectrophotometric data, not visual inspection alone.

When 951-AF Replaces General-Purpose, Flame-Retardant, or Plating ABS in Production Tools

The 951-AF product differs from general-purpose ABS primarily in its flow-to-impact balance. In a tool currently filled with a general-purpose ABS having a melt volume-flow rate of 8–20 cm³/10 min, a switch to 951-AF can reduce peak injection pressure and permit full cavities on a lower clamp force machine. However, the lower melt viscosity does not automatically provide equivalent low-temperature toughness. Notched Izod specimens tested under ISO 180:2023 at −30 °C should be compared because high-flow ABS grades can show reduced sub-ambient impact performance relative to medium-flow impact-modified ABS. Lot-specific data is required for acceptance.

Unlike flame-retardant ABS grades using brominated/antimony or phosphorus-based packages to achieve a UL 94 V-0 rating at 1.5 mm, an unfilled non-FR 951-AF is not expected to exceed UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm unless the batch certificate states otherwise. Flame-retardant ABS typically exhibits higher density, lower notched impact strength, and a narrower processing window. It can also generate acidic decomposition products at excessive temperatures, and unprotected steel molds may corrode. If UL 94 V-0 is required, 951-AF should not be selected without written confirmation from the manufacturer.

For applications requiring heat deflection temperatures above 90 °C under 1.80 MPa, a PC/ABS blend is more suitable than unfilled ABS 951-AF. PC/ABS also provides better low-temperature toughness but raises melt viscosity and requires drying at 100–120 °C. In electroplating ABS, the butadiene particle size distribution and surface etch chemistry are optimized for chromic acid etch adhesion. A high-flow non-plating grade such as 951-AF may not deliver equivalent peel strength under ASTM B533 unless a specific adhesion validation is performed. Substitution for electroplating ABS is therefore not a drop-in change.

The 951-AF designation also differs from transparent MABS and glass-filled ABS. Transparent MABS requires precise refractive index control and higher processing stability to maintain light transmission. Glass-filled ABS demonstrates higher modulus and lower mold shrinkage but produces abrasive wear on screws and barrels unless hardened tool steel components are used. The AF suffix in 951-AF is the manufacturer’s internal modifier code and should not be interpreted as a standardized ISO designation.

Regrind use on production-scale injection molding lines should be controlled as a separate material stream. For unfilled ABS, a regrind fraction of 20% by mass is generally tolerated for non-appearance parts when the regrind is dried under the same conditions as virgin pellets. Higher fractions above 30% increase batch-to-batch variability in melt flow and darken molded parts because repeated thermal history consumes antioxidants and degrades the butadiene phase. Granulation should use sharp knives to minimize fines; particles below 2 mm feed inconsistently and can produce unmelted particles in the melt stream.

Application scope for ABS 951-AF includes thin-wall appliance control panels, electronic enclosures, wiring ducts, automotive interior trim, and vacuum cleaner housings where processing economics and surface appearance dominate over extreme load-bearing performance. For outdoor applications, UV stabilization or painting/coating is required because unprotected ABS embrittles under prolonged ultraviolet exposure. The material should not be used for load-bearing exterior parts without stabilization and weathering validation.

Regulatory compliance for ABS 951-AF shipments is assessed against the substance restrictions relevant to the destination market. For the European Union, the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by Commission Delegated Directive 2015/863 limits lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and four specified phthalates to 0.1% by mass in homogeneous material, while cadmium is limited to 0.01% by mass. Testing is conducted using the IEC 62321 series. REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 requires supplier declaration of substances of very high concern, with an SVHC reporting threshold of 0.1% by mass per article. For China domestic shipments, hazardous substance disclosure may be required under GB/T 26572-2011 and marking provisions under SJ/T 11364-2014.
