Shenzhen Fuheng PC/ABS FH-PCA-420 is a polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied by Shenzhen Fuheng for thin-wall injection moulding applications requiring a controlled balance of rigidity, impact resistance, and flame retardancy. The model designation FH-PCA-420 identifies a 420-series formulation within the supplier’s flame-retardant PC/ABS portfolio and is normally evaluated against UL 94 flammability classification, ISO 1133-1:2022 melt flow, and ISO 527-2:2012 tensile properties. Published data for this specific configuration is limited in the public domain, so the manufacturer’s current technical datasheet and lot-specific certificate of analysis should be treated as the controlling document for specification limits. The grade is distinct from unfilled general-purpose PC/ABS, glass-filled PC/ABS, and PC/PBT alloys in that its flame-retardant package modifies both melt viscosity and thermal stability. It is generally specified for electrical enclosures, power supply housings, and office automation chassis.
In comparison with general-purpose PC/ABS alloys, FH-PCA-420 is positioned in the medium-flow flame-retardant segment. Representative supplier datasheets for this class report melt volume-flow rates between 10 cm³/10 min and 22 cm³/10 min at 260°C/5 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022. That is lower than high-flow PC/ABS grades selected for long flow-length parts but higher than extrusion-grade PC/ABS used for sheet. The melt viscosity difference is observable in spiral-flow testing with a 2.0 mm mould, where flame-retardant PC/ABS compounds typically produce flow lengths 15–25% shorter than an unfilled general-purpose grade at equivalent melt temperature. The reduction is attributable to the char-forming flame-retardant system and, in some phosphorus-based formulations, to a slight crosslinking tendency under high shear. Compared with unmodified PC, the alloy displays lower melt viscosity and improved stress-crack resistance under ISO 22088-3:2008 but sacrifices optical clarity and sustained load performance above 100°C.
A second operational difference concerns flammability. FH-PCA-420 is commonly specified to achieve UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm; general-purpose PC/ABS without a flame-retardant package usually rates HB or V-2 at equal thickness. The V-0 rating is not a material property alone but a function of part thickness and colour, and the UL yellow card for the exact colour and thickness must be obtained before production. Brominated flame-retardant grades often retain higher impact than halogen-free grades but are subject to compliance restrictions under IEC 61249-2-21 and the EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. If halogen-free compliance is required, the supplier should provide documented halogen content certification rather than a verbal claim, because additive packages can vary between production lots.

The ranges in Table 1 are compiled from publicly available supplier datasheets for unfilled flame-retardant PC/ABS alloy classes. They are not lot-specific limits for FH-PCA-420 and must not be used for acceptance or rejection of incoming material.
Before melt processing, FH-PCA-420 must be dried to a moisture content below 0.02 wt% because polycarbonate hydrolyzes at processing temperatures. Desiccant drying at 80–100°C for 3–4 h with a dew point of ≤ -30°C is required; at ambient relative humidity above 60%, drying time should be extended to 4–6 h. Drying hoppers with insufficient dew-point control are a common cause of silver streaks and impact loss in production-scale injection moulding. The material should not be exposed to halogenated flame-retardant fumes, and regrind from any previous lot with unknown drying history must be re-dried before use.
Injection moulding should be performed on a reciprocating screw with L/D ratio 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. A barrel profile from 240°C to 270°C, nozzle at 250°C maximum, and mould temperatures from 60°C to 90°C are typical for the grade class. Back pressure should be limited to 3–7 MPa to avoid excessive shear heating; screw speed below 0.3 m/s peripheral velocity is recommended. Residence time should not exceed 8 min at melt temperatures above 260°C, because phosphorus-based flame retardants can undergo acid-catalyzed degradation that reduces molecular weight and produces black specks. Hot-runner systems require externally heated manifolds with no dead spots; valve-gate sequentials are preferred over cold runners for flame-retardant grades because slow flow fronts can cause weld-line brittleness.
Capillary rheometry on flame-retardant PC/ABS under ISO 11443:2021 typically shows shear-thinning behaviour with a power-law index between 0.3 and 0.5 over shear rates from 100 s⁻¹ to 1000 s⁻¹. At shear rates above 5000 s⁻¹, wall slip and local melt-temperature rise can occur, which is why narrow gates and extremely high injection velocities should be avoided unless simulation and mould-flow analysis support the process setting. Mould shrinkage for this class is generally 0.5–0.7% in the flow direction and 0.5–0.8% transverse under ISO 294-4:2018, but the actual value must be confirmed on a plaque tool before cutting production steel.
Batch-to-batch variation in flame-retardant PC/ABS compounds often appears as a shift in melt volume-flow rate and notched impact. On a production line with a 150-tonne clamp force injection moulding machine and a 1.5 mm wall-thickness housing, a 10% increase in MVR can reduce short-shot pressure requirements by 5–8% but may drop UL 94 V-0 performance if the flame-retardant concentration is at the low end of specification. Acceptance testing should therefore include not only melt flow but also a flammability check on moulded plaques at the same thickness and colour as production parts. The manufacturer’s certificate of analysis is insufficient without in-house incoming inspection for critical electrical enclosure programmes because colour concentrates and regrind addition above 20 wt% can shift the UL 94 classification outside the listed range.
Power supply housings with wall sections of 1.2 mm to 1.6 mm are a common application for FH-PCA-420. The compound is selected when the part must pass UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm and retain notched Charpy impact above 20 kJ/m² after conditioning at 85°C and 85% RH for 168 h under ISO 6270-2:2017. In charger enclosures, a halogen-free flame-retardant grade reduces the risk of corrosive gas evolution during thermal decomposition; if the product is marketed in the EU, the OEM should request documentation confirming compliance with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Published field data for FH-PCA-420 in this specific configuration is limited, so qualification should include thermal cycling from -40°C to 85°C with 100 cycles.
Compared with PC/PBT alloys, FH-PCA-420 offers higher flexural modulus and lower mould shrinkage but lower resistance to automotive fuels and brake fluid. The difference is measurable with immersion testing under ISO 22088-3:2008 or by comparing tensile strength retention after contact with reference fuel mixtures. Compared with PC/ASA, it provides better low-temperature impact but lower UV resistance under ISO 4892-2:2013. For indoor electronics enclosures, UV resistance is less critical; for outdoor telecommunications boxes, the absence of a UV-stabilised package limits direct exposure life and requires painting or co-moulding with a UV-resistant exterior.
For electric vehicle battery management system housings, wall-thickness finite-element analysis typically targets a modulus above 2300 MPa and creep resistance at 80°C under ISO 899-2:2003. The use of FH-PCA-420 in such applications requires confirmation that the flame-retardant additive does not migrate to the surface after thermal ageing at 85°C for 1000 h. Incompatibility with amine-based epoxy potting compounds should also be assessed because residual amines can accelerate PC/ABS hydrolysis and reduce molecular weight at stressed corners. For medical housings prepared by autoclaving, this grade class is not recommended for cycles above 121°C for more than 30 min because hydrolytic attack on the polycarbonate phase leads to embrittlement.
