    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

The product designation Shenzhen Fuheng ABS FH-ABS-600 identifies a commercial acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene grade supplied by Shenzhen Fuheng. The designation is supplier-specific, and the FH prefix is not an automatic regulatory classification under a flame-retardant standard. Published grade-specific data for FH-ABS-600 is limited in open industrial sources, so purchasing specifications should require a lot-level certificate of analysis and, where a flame rating is claimed, a recognised UL 94 test report. The following sections treat the material within the class envelope of commercial ABS compounds and identify where it may diverge from general-purpose ABS, flame-retardant ABS, HIPS, and PC/ABS.

Which Specification Parameters Should Govern Incoming Resin Acceptance?

Grade acceptance should be linked to established test methods. For unreinforced commercial ABS, density is typically 1.03–1.07 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1, melt volume-flow rate at 220 °C and 10 kg is typically 5–25 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1, tensile yield stress is typically 35–50 MPa and tensile modulus 2000–2700 MPa under ISO 527-2, Izod notched impact strength is typically 15–35 kJ/m² under ISO 180/1A, Vicat B50 softening temperature is typically 95–115 °C under ISO 306, and deflection temperature under load is typically 85–105 °C at 1.8 MPa under ISO 75-2. These ranges are class-typical and should not substitute for grade-specific values for FH-ABS-600; they provide the envelope against which a supplied batch is assessed.

Property Test method General-purpose ABS Flame-retardant ABS PC/ABS HIPS
    Density ISO 1183-1 1.03–1.07 g/cm³ 1.15–1.22 g/cm³ 1.12–1.20 g/cm³ 1.03–1.06 g/cm³
Tensile yield stress ISO 527-2 35–50 MPa 30–45 MPa 50–65 MPa 22–35 MPa
    Izod notched impact ISO 180/1A 15–35 kJ/m² 8–20 kJ/m² 40–80 kJ/m² 8–15 kJ/m²
    Vicat B50 ISO 306 95–115 °C 85–105 °C 120–140 °C 85–100 °C

Deviations outside these bands usually indicate flame-retardant additive loading, rubber-phase modification, or regrind contamination. The differentiation between FH-ABS-600 and other products should therefore be confirmed with the supplier lot certificate rather than inferred from a generic ABS datasheet.

Electrical enclosure and appliance fascia applications are often associated with this ABS segment. Moulded covers for indoor electronic equipment, power distribution accessories, and consumer appliance housings require predictable melt flow and surface appearance. For thin-wall covers with flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 120:1, production experience on cold-runner tools shows that widening the gate land from 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm and increasing the cold runner diameter from 4 mm to 6 mm reduces gate blush and jetting. These applications also require low residual moisture. A closed-loop desiccant dryer delivering -28 °C dew point with 3–4 h at 80 °C is commonly specified for ABS. In production environments above 60% RH, pre-drying is mandatory even for material supplied in sealed foil-lined bags, and feed-throat temperature should be maintained below 50 °C to reduce condensation on the pellet surface.

When Melt Temperature and Screw Speed Exceed the Stable Processing Window

Injection moulding of medium-viscosity ABS grades is normally operated with a rear barrel zone of 180–200 °C, middle zones of 210–230 °C, a front zone of 220–240 °C, and a nozzle of 230–250 °C. At melt temperatures above 250 °C, sequential degradation of the butadiene phase leads to brown streaks and an increase in melt-flow rate despite the same barrel settings; this is a production-scale indicator of shear- and heat-induced chain scission. On 25 mm general-purpose injection screws with a compression ratio of 2.5:1, backpressure values of 0.5–1.0 MPa are adequate for colour dispersion, while screw surface speeds above 0.5 m/s are not recommended for unfilled ABS because local shear heating in the metering section can exceed 10 °C above the set-point. Melt residence time should be held below 8 min at processing temperature. For flame-retardant ABS, the ceiling is lower: melt temperatures above 245 °C can discolour the base polymer and reduce flame-retardant efficiency by decomposing halogenated or phosphate additives before the part forms.

Gate and runner design for flame-retardant ABS requires specific attention. Hot-runner systems with internal valve gates are used only if the manifold temperature does not exceed 240 °C and the residence volume is below 1.5 shots; longer hot-runner residence produces yellowing and additive plate-out on valve pins. Mould steel should be corrosion-resistant, such as 1.2343 or chrome-plated construction, because halogenated flame-retardant packages can generate acidic by-products at processing temperatures. Vent depths of 0.02–0.04 mm are adequate for ABS; insufficient venting increases burn marks and mould deposit.

Flame Rating Thickness, Regulatory Substitution, and Product-Class Divergence

Flame-retardant ABS grades are classified under UL 94 vertical-burn testing at specific thicknesses, commonly 1.5 mm or 2.0 mm. A V-0 rating at 1.6 mm is not equivalent to V-0 at 0.8 mm or 3.0 mm; the result is thickness-dependent and should be read directly from the certification report. Where the FH prefix is being interpreted as a flame-retardant marker, the purchase specification must call for a recognised certification body report. No datasheet property range can substitute for the controlled flame-test evidence.

Compared with general-purpose ABS, flame-retardant ABS often displays lower melt volume-flow rate, lower Izod notched impact, lower Vicat softening temperature, and higher density due to the additive package. In production, these differences change the moulding process: melt temperatures usually occupy 210–235 °C, mould temperatures 50–70 °C, and hold pressure may need to be raised by 10–20% relative to general-purpose ABS to minimise sink marks on thick sections. The lower ductility appears in notched Izod values often below 20 kJ/m², which may exclude flame-retardant ABS from snap-fit designs requiring repeated assembly flexure unless bosses and snap arms are redesigned with larger radii and lower strain.

PC/ABS substitution is justified when notched impact at -30 °C must remain above 30 kJ/m² under ISO 180/1A or when heat deflection under 1.8 MPa exceeds 110 °C. PC/ABS blends typically range from 40–80 kJ/m² Izod notched impact and Vicat B50 from 120–140 °C. HIPS is lower-cost but has tensile yield stress of 22–35 MPa and Izod notched impact of 8–15 kJ/m². The choice between FH-ABS-600 and comparable products must be reduced to numerical acceptance criteria. Supplier datasheet differences of less than 5% in tensile yield stress or less than 10% in melt volume-flow rate may be commercially relevant in thin-wall moulding but are not necessarily engineering-significant in thick-wall structural parts.

Operational boundaries for this grade segment are set by chemical compatibility and thermal history. Ketones, esters, and chlorinated hydrocarbons attack ABS and must be excluded from cleaning solvents and secondary operations; mould cleaning with acetone or methyl ethyl ketone is not permitted. Regrind content should be controlled because repeated heat history shifts melt-flow rate and lowers impact. A maximum of 20% regrind is a common internal specification for injection moulders but must be validated for the specific part and wall thickness. For UV-exposed applications, stabilisation is required; indoor ABS grades without a UV package should not be considered for direct outdoor exposure. Final selection of FH-ABS-600 must therefore be accompanied by a supplier certificate, a defined moulding window, and end-use testing under the applicable product safety standard such as IEC 62368-1.
