    More Introduction

Shenzhen Chenyufeng PC/ABS CYF286G is an unfilled polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied as 2–4 mm cylindrical pellets for injection moulding. The compound is positioned for general-purpose technical components in which melt fluidity, heat resistance, and low-temperature impact retention must be balanced without flame-retardant additives. Publicly available English-language data for this exact formulation is limited; the numeric envelope below is consolidated from the supplier’s Chinese-language technical documentation and production quality-control records. Values are reported on dry-as-molded specimens conditioned at 23 °C and 50 % RH according to ISO 291:2008. Lot-specific certificates of analysis supersede these nominal values.

Flammability at 1.6 mm UL 94 HB

The nominal melt flow rate of 15–25 g/10 min places CYF286G in the medium-to-high flow segment for unfilled PC/ABS. This improves filling of long flow paths and thin sections but reduces melt strength relative to low-flow specialty grades. The property envelope is therefore most suitable for injection-molded housings, brackets, and interior structural parts that require a moderate heat deflection ceiling rather than continuous exposure above 120 °C.

When CYF286G Is Selected for Thin-Wall Electronic Housings

Thin-wall housing programmes for routers, power adapters, and remote-control shells often specify nominal wall thickness of 1.2–2.0 mm. CYF286G is applied in this envelope when UL 94 HB is acceptable and heat deflection under a 1.8 MPa load must remain in the 102–108 °C range. On injection molding machines with 1200–2500 kN clamp force, side-gate dimensions of 0.8–1.2 mm and fan-gate dimensions of 1.0–1.5 mm are normally specified to avoid jetting and surface roughness. Fill time for wall sections of 1.2–1.6 mm is limited to 0.5–1.5 s, and cavity pressure at the gate is held below 70 MPa to reduce flash and molded-in stress. Mold temperature control at 60–90 °C improves knit-line appearance and impact retention in thin sections; beryllium-copper inserts or pressurized water channels are preferred for uniform heat removal. Because PC/ABS is opaque, CYF286G is not a substitute for transparent polycarbonate windows or lenses.

Pre-drying is mandatory. The polycarbonate phase undergoes hydrolysis at melt temperatures above 240 °C when residual moisture exceeds 0.02 %, producing silver streaks, gate splay, and measurable loss of notched Izod impact. A desiccant dryer with a dew point below −30 °C should be operated at 80–100 °C for 3–4 h in sealed moisture-barrier containers. Exposure to room air above 60 % RH for more than 8 h requires re-drying, with residual moisture verified by ISO 15512:2019. Barrel temperatures from rear to nozzle are typically set to 230/240/250/260 °C, with nozzle temperature maintained at 255–265 °C. Back pressure is set to 0.3–0.7 MPa to homogenise melt temperature without excessive shear heating. Holding pressure is adjusted to maintain a cushion of 3–5 mm; screw decompression is limited to 5–10 mm to prevent air entrainment. Regrind from sprues and runners may be added up to 20 wt% if dried and blended uniformly, but impact-critical components should use virgin pellets. A reverse-taper shut-off nozzle is preferred to prevent drool and stringing.

What Limits Weld-Line Strength and Impact Retention in CYF286G?

Weld lines form where separate melt fronts converge at apertures, ribs, or multi-gate layouts. In unfilled PC/ABS such as CYF286G, weld-line tensile strength typically declines to 40–60 % of the unwelded ISO 527-2:2012 value. The reduction is more severe at mold temperatures below 60 °C or melt temperatures below 240 °C; under these conditions, weld-line notched Izod energy can fall to 20–35 % of the parent material’s 40–50 kJ/m². This limitation drives gate design away from direct flow through holes and toward sequential valve gating or overflow wells. Mold-flow simulation is normally used to place the last-filling region in non-structural zones. If a snap-fit boss must be located on a weld line, the local wall should be thickened by 15–25 % and the gate repositioned; otherwise impact failure occurs below the nominal design load. Published multi-batch data for CYF286G in weld-line configurations is limited; validation should use instrumented falling-dart impact testing on the molded component.

Solvent contact under residual stress also reduces impact retention. PC/ABS is stress-crack-sensitive to aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, and some esters. Post-molding annealing at 80–95 °C for 2–4 h is sometimes applied when parts must contact mild cleaners. Coating compatibility should be checked because solvent-borne paints may cause microcracking in the polycarbonate-rich surface layer. Adhesion testing for painted or coated parts can follow ISO 2409:2013 for cross-cut evaluation.

CYF286G differs from flame-retardant PC/ABS blends primarily in flammability classification and additive burden. A phosphate-based flame-retardant PC/ABS with UL 94 V-0 at 1.6 mm typically carries 5–12 wt% flame-retardant additives, raising density to 1.16–1.20 g/cm³ and reducing tensile yield stress by 3–6 %. CYF286G is rated HB at 1.6 mm and is not a drop-in where IEC 62368-1 or UL 94 V-0 enclosure requirements apply. Compared with general-purpose ABS, CYF286G raises notched Izod impact at 23 °C from 15–25 kJ/m² to 40–50 kJ/m² and raises heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa from 80–95 °C to 102–108 °C. Compared with neat polycarbonate, CYF286G lowers melt viscosity and improves processability but sacrifices optical clarity and continuous-use temperature above 120 °C. Compared with glass-filled PC/ABS, CYF286G has lower flexural modulus but higher notched impact and lower density.

Processing Window, Residence Time, and Incompatibility Boundaries

CYF286G should not remain in the barrel at melt temperatures above 260 °C for longer than 8 min; at 250 °C the residence limit can be extended to 15 min. Excessive residence produces yellowing, viscosity shifts, and thermal degradation of the butadiene phase. Purging between color changes should use a medium-MFR polypropylene or a commercial PC purging compound. Purging with ABS alone may leave incompatible residue in the nozzle tip and check-ring assembly.

Incompatibilities include polyvinyl chloride and acetal resins. Hydrogen chloride from degraded PVC hydrolyzes the polycarbonate phase, while formaldehyde and acidic species from acetal accelerate ABS degradation. Equipment previously used for these polymers should be purged before CYF286G is introduced. High-pH mold cleaners and amine-containing additives should be avoided because the polycarbonate phase is sensitive to alkaline hydrolysis. Mold release selection should be restricted to neutral esters or silicone-free grades, particularly where adhesion or painting is required. Storage should be conducted in sealed moisture-barrier packaging below 30 °C. Opened material exposed for more than 8 h at 60 % RH must be re-dried before molding. The outdoor UV stability of CYF286G is not equivalent to PC/ASA; it is intended for indoor or painted applications unless validated with ISO 4892-2:2021 using the specific color, thickness, and exposure duration of the final component.
