    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Shantou Xin Yongfa ABS PC 010 is designated as a compounded acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene/polycarbonate alloy. The grade code ABS PC 010 is not defined in the public domain; without a manufacturer technical datasheet, no polycarbonate fraction, melt-flow-rate bin, or impact-modification system can be assigned to this specific commercial designation. Published data for this specific configuration is limited. Consequently, material intake should be controlled against representative unfilled ABS/PC property envelopes using ISO 1133-1:2022 melt flow-rate testing, ISO 1183-1:2019 density measurement, ISO 3451-1:2019 ash content, and ISO 527-2:2012 tensile yield verification. The polymer class is normally selected for electrical enclosures, appliance control panels, automotive interior substrates, and indoor equipment housings where the balance of impact resistance, heat resistance, and flow length is more important than optical transparency. The remainder of this document separates generic ABS/PC processing behaviour from batch-specific certifications. No end-use approval is implied by the absence of a formal datasheet.

What Limits the Drying and Processing Window for ABS PC 010?

The principal processing conflict in ABS/PC alloys is the combination of moisture-sensitive polycarbonate segments and heat-sensitive butadiene-containing ABS segments. Residual moisture above 0.02 wt% measured by ISO 15512:2019 promotes hydrolytic chain scission of polycarbonate at melt temperatures above 245 °C, producing silver streaks, reduced molecular weight, and lower impact strength. At the same time, prolonged residence at melt temperatures above 280 °C degrades the polybutadiene phase, causing yellowing and impact loss. Pre-drying is therefore carried out in a desiccant dryer at 80–100 °C for 3–4 h, with a dew point of -30 °C or lower, to a target residual moisture of ≤0.02 wt%. Hot-air ovens are unsuitable when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60% because they cannot maintain the required dew point.

Injection moulding operations typically set the nozzle melt temperature at 250–275 °C for moderate-flow ABS/PC grades. Mold temperature is held at 70–90 °C to reduce frozen-in orientation and to improve knit-line strength. General-purpose screws with L/D 20:1–24:1 and compression ratios of 2.0:1–2.5:1 are used; backpressure is maintained at 3–7 bar, and screw decompression after plastication is limited to 3–5 mm to prevent nozzle drool. High screw speeds above 150–200 rpm generate shear heating that can push melt temperature into the degradation zone even when barrel setpoints remain below 270 °C. Production-scale short shots on 800 kN clamp machines have been associated with melt temperature below 245 °C, mold temperature below 60 °C, or premature switch-over before 95% fill. Conversely, jetting and gate blush appear when linear injection velocity exceeds 350 mm/s in unfilled ABS/PC. The optimal processing window is therefore narrower than for general-purpose ABS, and process capability studies should include melt residence time as a controlled variable.

For components requiring moderate heat resistance and impact at low ambient temperatures, ABS PC 010 is evaluated through end-use tests rather than material-specification values alone. Electrical enclosures are typically screened for ball-pressure resistance according to IEC 60695-10-2:2014 at 125 °C, glow-wire ignition temperature according to IEC 60695-2-12:2021, and comparative tracking index according to IEC 60112:2020. Enclosure warpage under thermal load is assessed with a 90 °C air oven exposure for 7 days, after which dimensional change should remain within the drawing tolerance for the intended service environment. Automotive interior substrates are not appropriate for direct material approval by ISO or ASTM tests alone; OEM specifications commonly impose heat ageing at 100 °C for 500 h, low-temperature impact at -30 °C, and odour testing under VDA 270. A material batch that meets ISO 75-2:2013 HDT of 100–120 °C at 1.82 MPa and ISO 180:2019 notched Izod of 40–60 kJ/m² at 23 °C may still fail an end-use application if knit-line placement, painting, or thermal cycling introduces additional stress. Thus, application development for ABS PC 010 should combine incoming-lot mechanical data with moulded-part validation.

Comparative Property Data for ABS PC 010, ABS, and Polycarbonate

Differences between ABS PC 010 and competing materials are best resolved by comparing the unfilled ABS/PC envelope to general-purpose ABS and unmodified polycarbonate. Table 1 lists representative values for unfilled grades; these values are typical ranges, not batch-certified values for ABS PC 010.

The property envelope shows that ABS PC 010 is typically positioned between ABS and polycarbonate in heat deflection temperature and impact strength. Compared with general-purpose ABS, the ABS/PC alloy provides higher notched Izod impact and higher HDT, but it also requires more aggressive drying and a higher mold temperature. Compared with unmodified polycarbonate, the alloy shows lower melt viscosity for improved filling of thin-wall enclosures, but it sacrifices heat resistance and optical clarity. The flow improvement is process-relevant: for a 2.5 mm spiral-flow mould, unfilled ABS/PC grades commonly achieve 50–70% longer flow length than polycarbonate at the same melt temperature and injection pressure. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so direct comparison must be confirmed by capillary rheometry or spiral-flow tests on actual ABS PC 010 lots.

Because polycarbonate segments in ABS PC 010 undergo hydrolytic degradation when processed with residual moisture above 0.02 wt%, high-humidity storage and moulding environments impose strict handling controls. Opened bags stored at relative humidity exceeding 60% for more than 2 h should be re-dried before processing. Regrind ratios above 20 wt% can increase variability in melt flow rate and impact strength unless the regrind is dried and blended uniformly. Chemical incompatibility is also relevant: contact with ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and amine-based mould cleaners can induce stress cracking on moulded parts before the part reaches end-use qualification. Mold-cleaning solvents containing methyl ethyl ketone or toluene should not be used on hot mould surfaces for ABS PC 010 production.

Compliance screening is performed against the matrix in Table 2. The absence of a public UL Yellow Card for Shantou Xin Yongfa ABS PC 010 means that flame-retardant claims at 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm thickness cannot be assumed. If the application falls within the scope of IEC 62368-1:2023, flammability is evaluated on the final enclosure at minimum wall thickness according to IEC 60695-11-10:2021. Non-flame-retardant ABS/PC grades may achieve only HB or V-2 classification depending on thickness and colourant; V-0 performance usually requires phosphorus-based or halogenated flame-retardant additives that alter ductility, HDT, and processing stability. The user of ABS PC 010 should therefore obtain lot-level certificates for mechanical and regulatory properties, not rely on generic ABS/PC claims.

When Ribbed Enclosure Geometries Are Moulded from ABS PC 010

Thin-wall electronic housings with rib bosses, snap-fits, and threaded inserts require a different set of tooling rules than heavier structural parts. For wall sections below 1.2 mm, ABS PC 010 should be evaluated for spiral-flow length at the intended wall thickness and melt temperature. Gate placement should avoid long flow paths crossing behind cores or around abrupt changes in thickness, because weld-line formation in ABS/PC is sensitive to mold temperature. Increasing mold temperature from 60 °C to 90 °C improves knit-line strength but extends cooling time and may raise cycle time by 10–20% depending on part thickness. Holding pressure is set at 60–80% of injection pressure, and gate freeze time is confirmed by seal-time studies using part-weight variation below 0.1%.

Shrinkage behaviour in ABS/PC is intermediate between ABS and polycarbonate. Typical mould shrinkage for unfilled ABS/PC on a 60 mm × 60 mm × 2 mm plaque according to ISO 294-4:2018 falls in the range of 0.4–0.7%, with lower values parallel to flow than transverse to flow. Ribs should be designed with a base thickness of 50–60% of adjacent wall thickness to minimize sink marks and void formation. Bosses for self-tapping screws require generous radii at the base and draft angles of 1–2° to avoid ejection stresses. If textured surfaces are specified, draft angles are increased to 3–5° depending on texture depth. These tooling practices are generic to unfilled ABS/PC alloys; they do not replace mould-flow simulation using lot-specific viscosity data for Shantou Xin Yongfa ABS PC 010.
