    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Shantou Longxing ABS LX-002 is presented as an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding grade for general-purpose technical components. The trade designation does not function as a standardized property code under ISO 1043-1:2011, and no producer datasheet is indexed in the principal public collections consulted for this assessment. Consequently, all numerical values stated below are representative windows for unfilled general-purpose ABS grades from independent material databases and are not a certified specification for LX-002. A purchaser should obtain the producer’s lot-specific certificate of analysis before releasing the grade into production tooling.

This qualification constraint is operationally significant. When a resin is introduced without verified melt volume-flow rate, tensile yield stress, or Vicat softening data, incoming-inspection laboratories must benchmark the material against control lots using ISO 1133-1:2022, ISO 527-2:2012, and ISO 306:2022. Failure to perform such benchmarking on a new lot may generate dimensional variability in parts with wall thicknesses below 2.0 mm or visible knit-line embrittlement in multi-gate tools.

Material Identity and Nominal Classification Standards

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymers are two-phase systems comprising a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and dispersed polybutadiene domains. The LX-002 grade is identified by the manufacturer as an ABS resin; however, the suffix -002 is an internal code rather than an ISO descriptor. If the grade is unfilled and non-flame-retardant, its standard designation would be “ABS, general purpose” in terms of ISO 1043-1:2011. The polymer family is registered under CAS 9003-56-9, but the additive package of a specific product remains producer-controlled and must be confirmed for end-use chemical inventory notifications.

For typical unfilled general-purpose ABS, the melt volume-flow rate reported at 220 °C under a 10 kg load usually lies between 5 cm³/10 min and 25 cm³/10 min. Tensile yield stress is commonly measured at 35–50 MPa by ISO 527-2:2012, and notched Charpy impact strength at 23 °C typically falls between 10 kJ/m² and 30 kJ/m² by ISO 179-1:2010. These ranges are not specific to LX-002; they define the envelope within which the grade would ordinarily be expected to operate if it is a conventional general-purpose product.

Mould shrinkage for unfilled ABS is normally reported from 0.4 % to 0.7 % when measured on plaques according to ISO 294-4:2018. The shrinkage direction is anisotropic, with flow-direction values often 0.1 % lower than transverse values at high injection speeds. Tool design for LX-002 should therefore assume a mid-range shrinkage of 0.5 % until first-article dimensional validation on a hot mould enables correction.

What Processing Boundaries Apply to General-Purpose ABS Grades?

Moisture control is the first processing boundary. ABS is hygroscopic enough that surface splay and internal voids appear when residual moisture exceeds 0.1 %. A closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point of ≤ -30 °C and an air temperature of 80 °C is required for 3–4 h when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Hopper drying is not sufficient under these conditions because the residence time is too short to remove moisture from cold regrind. For injection moulding shops in tropical coastal locations, drying should be maintained until the hopper inlet reaches 80 °C and the material residence time is not less than 2 h after the dew point stabilizes.

Residual moisture can be verified by ISO 15512:2019 Karl Fischer titration or by a validated moisture analyzer calibrated to 0.01 % resolution. On production lines, drying failures are most often caused by saturated desiccant beds, leaks in the dry-air circuit, or mixed regrind with different moisture histories. These failure modes produce intermittent splay that is frequently misdiagnosed as a mould venting issue.

Melt temperature should be measured with an immersion pyrometer from a purged shot. For general-purpose ABS, a stable melt pool is usually observed between 230 °C and 250 °C. Barrel zone settings are normally profiled from 180 °C at the feed throat to 220–240 °C at the nozzle, but the actual melt temperature depends on screw speed, back pressure, and residence time. On reciprocating-screw machines with clamp forces from 800 kN to 2500 kN, back pressure values between 0.5 MPa and 1.5 MPa and screw surface speeds below 0.3 m/s are typical. Exceeding 260 °C for more than 5 min can yellow the SAN phase and reduce impact strength through rubber-phase crosslinking.

Mould temperature is a critical variable for surface gloss and dimensional stability. A mould temperature of 40 °C to 80 °C is typical, with lower temperatures favouring faster cycles and higher temperatures improving weld-line strength and gloss. In thin-wall applications with flow length-to-thickness ratios above 150:1, a water-circulating mould-temperature control unit set to 60 °C is usually necessary to prevent premature freeze-off.

Injection moulding of appliance covers and consumer electronic enclosures imposes the most rigorous processing discipline on this grade class. In tools with multiple gates, weld lines form where melt fronts meet; their residual strength in ABS is strongly dependent on melt temperature and packing pressure. Production-scale observations on 1000 kN and 1600 kN hydraulic machines show that weld-line efficiency can fall below 40 % of the unwelded material’s impact value when the mould temperature is below 35 °C and the injection velocity is reduced to 15 mm/s. Increasing the mould temperature to 60 °C and using a profiled injection speed of 25–50 mm/s can restore much of the lost impact strength, though not to the level of a single-gated specimen.

For appliance housings, the material is often selected for dimensional stability, low odour, and acceptable impact at moderate cost. However, thin-wall designs below 1.5 mm require a higher melt volume-flow rate than typical general-purpose ABS. If LX-002 is a conventionally flowing grade with an MVR below 15 cm³/10 min, a mould with a wall thickness of 1.0 mm may show short shots unless the melt temperature is raised to 250 °C and the injection speed is increased. This is a fundamental downstream constraint, not a defect of the resin.

In automotive interior trim, ABS is used for lower-stress components such as speaker grilles, glove-box door panels, and interior trim brackets. Heat exposure in a parked vehicle can raise surface temperatures above 85 °C; therefore, a general-purpose ABS with a Vicat B50 below 95 °C may creep or distort under metal clips. Published data for LX-002 in automotive thermal-cycling tests is limited, so any interior application should be validated by an OEM-specific heat-aging protocol at 90 °C for at least 500 h before production release.

The grade may also be employed in office equipment bases, paper trays, toys, and small electrical enclosures where the mechanical load is moderate and the service temperature remains below 60 °C. For toys, regional migration limits for heavy metals and phthalates must be verified under EN 71-3 and REACH Annex XVII; the base resin alone cannot guarantee compliance of the finished coloured article.

Incoming-inspection data should be trended across lots using a control chart of MVR and Charpy impact. A shift in MVR of more than ±15 % from the supplier’s baseline may alter fill time in thin-wall tools and reduce weld-line strength. On a 1600 kN machine producing appliance housing parts with a shot weight of 450 g, a 15 % reduction in MVR can increase peak injection pressure by 8–12 % and trigger flash-freeze at the end of fill.

When LX-002 Is Compared with Flame-Retardant, High-Heat, and Plating ABS Grades

The principal differentiation of a general-purpose ABS grade such as LX-002 is the absence of performance-modifying chemistry. Flame-retardant ABS grades commonly contain brominated flame retardants and antimony synergists, which lower melt thermal stability and require lower melt temperatures, typically below 240 °C. High-heat ABS grades replace part of the styrene monomer with alpha-methylstyrene or use maleimide-type comonomers to raise the Vicat softening temperature above 105 °C; they demand higher melt temperatures and often exhibit a lower MVR at standard conditions. Comparing the representative table above, a high-heat grade sacrifices flow and often some impact strength for thermal performance.

Electroplating ABS grades are another distinct formulation class. They are optimized for chemical etch uniformity by controlling polybutadiene domain size and minimizing mould-release additives that can poison the palladium/tin sensitizer. A general-purpose grade may still plate, but adhesion can be variable. In production, electroplated ABS parts are frequently tested by thermal-cycling and peel-adhesion methods; automotive brightwork acceptance commonly requires adhesion values above 0.8 N/mm after copper-nickel-chromium plating. Published adhesion data for Shantou Longxing ABS LX-002 in electroplating operations is limited, so the grade should not be substituted for a qualified plating grade without first-article electroless etch trials using the actual moulded part.

High-flow ABS grades, by contrast, are low-viscosity materials designed for long flow paths and short cycles. They may show MVR values above 30 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg and are frequently used for thin-wall office equipment and multi-cavity tooling. The trade-off is usually a lower molecular weight, reduced Charpy impact strength, and sometimes greater risk of gate blush. If a converter runs tools with long hot-runner manifolds and part walls below 1.2 mm, a high-flow grade may be preferable to LX-002 unless the LX-002 has been confirmed to possess an MVR in the upper general-purpose range.

Regulatory compliance cannot be assumed from the polymer class. A manufacturer’s declaration should be requested for EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC screening. For electronic enclosures, the fire-performance classification is relevant: general-purpose ABS is normally rated only HB under UL 94. If a V-0 or V-2 classification is required at a thickness of 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm, the design should use a flame-retardant ABS grade unless LX-002 has been independently tested and listed under the manufacturer’s UL file. Without a UL Yellow Card, field certification of the finished device may be delayed.

In applications requiring low-temperature impact resistance below -20 °C, general-purpose ABS may show a steep loss in impact strength below its polybutadiene glass transition. Refrigerator liner components or outdoor enclosures exposed to cold impact should be tested by ISO 179-1:2010 at the minimum service temperature. Published low-temperature data for LX-002 is limited; qualification at -30 °C is recommended before specifying the grade for cold-climate service.
