    More Introduction

Shanghai Jiyie ABS SH-101 is supplied as a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding resin identified by the grade designation SH-101. Publicly available third-party data for this specific proprietary formulation are limited; therefore, any specification value appearing in distributor literature should be verified against a supplier certificate of analysis and retained-sample testing according to ISO 2580-1:2003 or ASTM D4673-16. The material is not classified as a polymer alloy but as a polybutadiene-grafted styrene-acrylonitrile matrix with an unfilled, non-flame-retardant composition typical of general-purpose ABS. The principal processing route is high-pressure injection moulding, with occasional use in sheet or profile extrusion where melt strength is adequate. The resin is hygroscopic; melt processing should begin only after residual moisture has been reduced to 0.1 wt% or less. Desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h is a common starting point for general-purpose ABS, but the SH-101 supplier’s processing instructions take precedence over class defaults.

What class of ABS does the SH-101 designation represent?

ABS resins are classified under ISO 2580-1 and ASTM D4673 by matrix composition, impact-modifier level, and flow behaviour. SH-101 falls into the general-purpose segment rather than high-gloss, high-impact, or heat-resistant specialty segments. Mainstream general-purpose grades contain sufficient butadiene to provide practical toughness while retaining enough styrene-acrylonitrile matrix to maintain stiffness and melt flow. Under ISO 179-1/1eA, Charpy notched impact strength at 23 °C for class-representative products is commonly reported between 10 kJ/m² and 30 kJ/m². Tensile yield stress under ISO 527-2 typically falls between 35 MPa and 50 MPa, while tensile modulus falls between 1,800 MPa and 2,600 MPa. Melt volume-flow rate determined at 220 °C under 10 kg load in ISO 1133-1:2022 is frequently found between 5 cm³/10 min and 20 cm³/10 min for comparable general-purpose products. These ranges are class-level technical data, not certified SH-101 values; the supplier datasheet is the only valid source for product-specific specification limits.

In high-gloss ABS grades, the rubber phase is dispersed with a narrow particle-size distribution and a smaller average domain size, which improves surface reflectance but reduces the contribution of rubber cavitation to impact energy absorption. A direct replacement of high-gloss ABS with SH-101 may change painted or unpainted surface appearance unless the tool surface is polished below SPI A-2 and the melt temperature is maintained near the upper end of the allowable window. High-impact ABS grades, by contrast, contain higher butadiene levels, often in the 15–25 wt% range for the rubber phase, and deliver greater low-temperature ductility. They may retain Charpy notched impact above 20 kJ/m² at -30 °C, while general-purpose grades may undergo a ductile-to-brittle transition near or above that temperature. SH-101, if positioned as a general-purpose product, should not be substituted for high-impact ABS in cold-impact applications without instrumented impact testing on production-representative plaques. Conversely, SH-101 may show lower melt pressure and better thin-wall fill than high-impact ABS of similar melt flow because lower rubber content reduces viscosity at high shear. Heat-resistant ABS grades modified with alpha-methylstyrene can reach HDT/A values above 100 °C, whereas general-purpose grades are typically constrained below 95 °C. SH-101 should therefore be excluded from continuous service above the supplier’s stated heat deflection temperature unless creep and modulus data support the load case.

Drying, Melt Conditioning, and Screw Geometry

Drying for SH-101 should be performed in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of at least -30 °C; heated hopper dryers or hot-air circulation are insufficient when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Moisture-related failure in ABS processing appears as silver streaking, reduced melt strength, and localised molecular-weight reduction from hydrolysis of the graft rubber phase. The drying hopper residence time should be matched to granule size and the manufacturer’s recommendation. For moderate granule sizes, 2–4 h at 80 °C is a common starting condition, but overdrying beyond the specified window can cause yellowing and additive migration. Colourant masterbatch and regrind should be dried under conditions appropriate to their carrier resin; unpigmented SH-101 dried within specification may still produce splay if the masterbatch carrier is not conditioned separately.

For reciprocating-screw injection moulding, a three-zone general-purpose screw with an L/D of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is typically suitable for unfilled ABS. Barrel temperature profiles can run from 180 °C at the rear zone to 200–250 °C at the nozzle, depending on wall thickness and flow length. Mould temperatures are normally held between 40 °C and 80 °C; higher mould temperature improves surface replication and knit-line strength but raises cooling time and shrinkage variation. Injection pressure is commonly held below 120 MPa, with hold pressure at 50–70 % of peak injection pressure. A moderate screw backpressure of 0.5–1.5 MPa assists melt homogenisation without excessive shear heating. If a hot runner is used, the hot-drop body should be internally heated and the gate shut-off should be positive; dead spots at 220 °C or above accelerate resin yellowness. Melt temperature should be verified at the nozzle rather than inferred from barrel set-points.

The exact processing window for SH-101 must be taken from the supplier’s processing guide. Starting conditions based on general-purpose ABS class defaults may require adjustment when the colourant package, regrind fraction, or mould cooling layout differs from the supplier’s qualification set. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; production trials should therefore be conducted with cavity-pressure monitoring to confirm gate freeze time and pack behaviour before the window is fixed.

When SH-101 Is Evaluated Against PC/ABS and Filled ABS in Rigid Housings

When SH-101 is compared with polycarbonate/ABS blends in rigid non-structural housings, the first discriminator is thermal behaviour and low-temperature impact. Commercial unfilled PC/ABS grades often show HDT/A between 100 °C and 125 °C and notched Izod values above 40 kJ/m² at 23 °C, while unfilled ABS products generally remain below 100 °C HDT/A and below 35 kJ/m² in notched Charpy or Izod testing. SH-101 may therefore be considered for replacement only when the internal peak service temperature is below 75 °C, the impact event is low-speed, and the component does not contact solvents that induce stress cracking in the ABS phase. In tools originally qualified with PC/ABS, the higher melt flow and lower melt elasticity of ABS can reduce pack pressure and shorten screw recovery, but it also increases the risk of jetting, flash, and weld-line visibility because the unfilled resin may have a narrower processing window and lower pseudo-plastic flow control.

Glass-fibre-reinforced ABS grades are selected for creep resistance, modulus, and low shrinkage. At 10–30 wt% glass fibre, these grades may raise flexural modulus to 4,000–7,000 MPa and reduce linear mould shrinkage to 0.2 %–0.4 %. Unfilled ABS, by comparison, typically exhibits mould shrinkage from 0.4 % to 0.7 %. A tool dimensioned for glass-filled ABS will therefore produce undersized parts if SH-101 is substituted directly; cavity measurements should be re-qualified using ISO 294-4 shrinkage plaques conditioned for 24 h at 23 ±2 °C and 50 ±5 % RH. In addition, glass-filled ABS is more abrasive to screw and barrel surfaces, which may alter the expected maintenance interval on the same injection machine. Unfilled SH-101 will generally provide better surface appearance and lower machine wear, but it will not reproduce the stiffness or dimension-stability envelope of a reinforced grade.

Regulatory status for Shanghai Jiyie ABS SH-101 should be confirmed against the exact commercial formulation and colourant package. The base ABS resin may be evaluated under the EU REACH regulation, including compliance with Article 33 SVHC communication obligations for any listed substance above 0.1 wt% in the article. Electrical and electronic applications require verification against Directive 2011/65/EU and its delegated amendments for restricted substances; typical ABS resins are not intrinsically outside RoHS, but cadmium-based pigments, lead-based heat stabilisers, or certain flame-retardant systems can create non-compliance if present. Food-contact use is not automatically granted; if the SH-101 grade is intended to meet food-contact requirements, it must be evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 180.22 for acrylonitrile copolymers or the applicable migration limit for the intended food type and temperature. The UL Yellow Card status, when required, must be obtained from the moulder; a general-purpose ABS is commonly listed at UL 94 HB, but the specific SH-101 designation may not carry a published UL file.

Failure Modes Observed on Injection Lines with Uncontrolled Moisture

Production-scale moulding records for unfilled ABS highlight several recurring failure modes when the feed system is not closed-loop. Silver streaks radiating from the gate are the most immediate indicator that moisture content exceeds 0.1 wt% in the melt; the defect is aggravated in hot-runner systems where residence time at 220 °C or above persists. In components with thin ribs or snap-fits, moisture degradation of the polybutadiene phase manifests as intermittent brittle fracture, even when dry-as-moulded specimens meet the supplier’s Charpy target. Batch-to-batch variance in colourant masterbatch also interacts with the drying step; the carrier resin in a masterbatch may require additional drying before blending with SH-101 to prevent splay that does not appear in unpigmented virgin material. Screw recovery time increases when the melt is wet, because viscosity fluctuations disturb shot-size control; on machines with accumulator-assisted injection, unstable cushion values often precede dimensional variation in sealing surfaces. These observations are class-level ABS processing phenomena; documented root-cause data for SH-101 under a specific L/D and clamp force are limited in public files and should be collected during production qualification.
