    More Introduction

Shanghai Jiyie ABS K35N8-W is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade supplied by Shanghai Jiyie Chemical Co., Ltd. The grade code identifies an unfilled ABS resin formulated for medium-thickness moulded parts in which balanced processability, practical impact toughness, and moderate heat resistance are required. The suffix W is a manufacturer-specific designation and is not assigned by ISO 1043; it should be confirmed against the lot certificate of analysis before tooling approval. Published data for this specific configuration is limited to supplier technical datasheets, lot-specific quality certificates, and processing records from injection-moulding lines. The following technical description therefore combines supplier-reported typical values with reference ABS property ranges obtained under standardised laboratory conditions.

The Property Envelope of K35N8-W Is Defined by ISO 1133 and ISO 527

Property comparisons for ABS grades require a fixed conditioning and test framework. For K35N8-W, natural-grade specimens are normally conditioned at 23°C and 50% relative humidity in accordance with ISO 291:2008. Rheological characterisation uses a capillary rheometry or melt flow index procedure under 220°C and 10 kg load. The values in Table 1 represent a typical property envelope, not a minimum specification. Part-specific performance is governed by gate freeze time, molecular orientation, mould surface replication, and melt residence history.

Pre-drying is mandatory. In dehumidifying hopper dryers, residual moisture in K35N8-W should be reduced below 0.05% by weight before melt processing. Drying at 80°C to 90°C for 2 h to 4 h with a dew point of −30°C or lower is typical for freshly opened packaging. Barrel temperature settings from 180°C at the rear zone to 240°C at the nozzle are commonly used, with mould temperature maintained between 40°C and 60°C. Reciprocating-screw machines with screw length-to-diameter ratios of 20:1 to 25:1 and compression ratios of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 are suitable. Back pressure should be limited to 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa, and injection pressure is typically 70 MPa to 120 MPa. Shot mass should occupy 50% to 70% of barrel capacity to limit residence time and avoid butadiene-phase degradation.

Processing failures observed on production lines are usually linked to wet feedstock, excessive melt temperature, or insufficient venting. Moisture above 0.05% creates silver streaking and reduces weld-line strength. Melt temperatures above 240°C combined with residence times beyond 5 min can produce yellowing, surface splay, and embrittlement at weld lines. Mould temperatures below 40°C increase frozen-in orientation and reduce gloss replication, particularly on textured surfaces. Vent depth of 0.02 mm to 0.05 mm is required at the end of fill to prevent burn marks and gas trapping.

Does High-Humidity Storage Depress Impact Performance in K35N8-W?

The dominant moisture-related risk in ABS is not hydrolytic backbone cleavage, as may occur in polycarbonate or polyamide, but steam volatilisation during plastication. K35N8-W absorbs approximately 0.25% to 0.35% moisture at equilibrium under 23°C and 50% relative humidity. If sacks are stored uncovered in a warehouse at 85°C/85% RH, absorbed moisture can exceed 0.5%. When such feedstock is fed directly to the screw, localised steam pressure during decompression causes internal voiding, surface splay, and a measurable reduction in Charpy notched impact strength. Drying prior to processing restores the property envelope in most cases, but prolonged moisture ageing combined with thermal degradation can irreversibly reduce the butadiene-phase toughening efficiency. Therefore, floor stock should be returned to sealed aluminium barrier liners after each campaign, and regrind should be dried separately before blending at ratios not exceeding 25% unless validated by lot-specific mechanical testing.

In electrical enclosure and appliance applications, K35N8-W is processed at wall sections from 2.0 mm to 3.5 mm. Typical production parts include vacuum cleaner housings, appliance fascia panels, power-tool casings, and interior trim substrates. The grade is rated UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm thickness in supplier documentation; it is not formulated for self-extinguishing performance and should not be used in enclosures requiring V-0, V-1, or 5VA classification. Continuous service temperature is constrained by heat deflection temperature and creep behaviour under load; general-purpose ABS grades of this class are normally limited to 85°C sustained use unless creep modulus and long-term thermal ageing data support a higher rating. Outdoor use is not recommended without UV-stabilised colour concentrates or protective coating, because unprotected ABS undergoes surface chalking and gloss loss after extended UV exposure.

When K35N8-W Is Compared with High-Flow, Flame-Retardant, and High-Impact ABS Grades

Grade selection in ABS is a compromise between melt flow, impact resistance, heat resistance, and surface appearance. K35N8-W is positioned as a medium-flow injection-moulding grade with balanced melt viscosity and Charpy impact strength. High-flow ABS grades with melt flow rates of 35–40 g/10 min fill thin-wall sections more easily, but they typically exhibit lower tensile modulus and lower weld-line strength. High-impact ABS grades containing greater butadiene content provide higher notched Charpy impact at −30°C, but they often display lower scratch resistance, higher mould shrinkage anisotropy, and lower surface gloss. Flame-retardant ABS grades achieve UL 94 V-0 performance through phosphorus-based or brominated additive packages; those additives can reduce tensile strength, increase density, and create plate-out on polished tooling. K35N8-W does not contain flame-retardant additives and therefore avoids plate-out but remains UL 94 HB.

For moulders producing appliance housings with wall thickness above 2.0 mm, K35N8-W provides a lower reject rate than high-flow ABS in textured tools because it maintains sufficient melt strength to replicate grain without excessive mould release. For portable devices with wall thickness below 1.2 mm, high-flow ABS or a PC/ABS blend is usually preferred because filling pressure and short-shot frequency increase sharply with K35N8-W. When low-temperature impact is critical, K35N8-W should not be substituted for high-impact ABS without conducting Charpy instrumented tests at −30°C on production parts.

Polycarbonate/ABS blends are often considered as an alternative when heat resistance above 100°C or impact strength above 30 kJ/m² is required. PC/ABS typically provides higher heat deflection temperature and improved low-temperature ductility, but it requires elevated melt temperatures of 250°C to 280°C and higher mould temperatures of 70°C to 100°C. It also demands more aggressive drying to below 0.02% moisture and exhibits increased sensitivity to moisture-induced hydrolysis. K35N8-W is the lower-cost, lower-temperature-processing option when the service environment does not exceed 85°C and when UL 94 HB is acceptable. In applications requiring chemical resistance to alkaline cleaners or outdoor UV stability, neither K35N8-W nor standard PC/ABS is intrinsically sufficient without coating or stabilisation.

Regulatory and Compliance Data Sheet Review for K35N8-W

Supplier certificates for ABS K35N8-W should be checked for conformity to current EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, including the four phthalates added by Commission Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863. REACH compliance is assessed under Article 33 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006; the supplier should confirm that substances of very high concern on the candidate list are below 0.1% w/w in the product as supplied. Food-contact status is not automatic. Each finished article intended for food-contact use must be evaluated under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 for overall migration and specific migration limits, and the polymerisation additives in the compounded resin must be covered by positive-list entries. Without such migration testing, K35N8-W should not be specified for food-contact mouldings.

The material should not be blended with polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride in reprocessing streams, because thermal dehydrochlorination of those resins releases hydrogen chloride, which can create surface defects, residual odour, and tool corrosion. Melt-phase contact with strong oxidising agents, concentrated acids, or ketone solvents should also be avoided. For coloured production runs, masterbatch carriers should be ABS-compatible; incompatible carriers such as unmixed polyolefin or nylon can form delamination layers at weld lines and reduce impact strength. These limitations are operational boundaries and should be integrated into material-handling and regrind-control procedures.
