    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Shanghai Jinhu Rili ABS HAC 8250 is an acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene terpolymer injection-molding grade. The product is designated for melt-processing routes where the component requires a balance between flow length and impact resistance, particularly in thin-wall and cosmetic applications. Independent published data for this specific grade are limited; therefore, grade-specific values for melt volume-flow rate, tensile properties, impact strength, and thermal resistance must be obtained from the current Shanghai Jinhu Rili Technical Data Sheet and batch certificate of analysis. Specimen preparation and conditioning should follow ISO 294-3:2020, while melt flow testing is performed under ISO 1133-1:2022. The resin is chemically described by the standard ABS designation under ISO 1043-1:2011, comprising a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer phase and dispersed polybutadiene rubber.

Because the commercial designation HAC 8250 does not define the comonomer ratio, the manufacturer’s product specification must be used to obtain acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene mass fractions. Residual styrene and volatile loss under drying affect odor, surface finish, and fogging performance. These compositional variables should be controlled through supplier batch release data and not inferred from generic ABS reference values. Differences in rubber particle size, grafting efficiency, and molecular weight distribution are typical sources of property variation between HAC 8250 and other ABS grades.

What Separates HAC 8250 From Standard ABS Grades?

The principal comparison with general-purpose ABS is made on melt volume-flow rate, notched Izod impact strength, and Vicat softening temperature. A standard ABS injection material often exhibits melt volume-flow rates in the range of 10 cm³/10 min to 25 cm³/10 min at 220 °C and 10 kg load. HAC 8250 is expected to fall near or above the higher-flow portion of that range, but the exact value must be confirmed on the production lot. Higher flow in ABS may be obtained by molecular weight distribution control rather than by external lubricant addition; if HAC 8250 follows this route, weld-line strength and electroplatability may be less affected than in lubricant-modified high-flow grades. Comparative testing should include notched Izod impact under ISO 180:2019 at 23 °C and −30 °C, because low-temperature behavior depends strongly on polybutadiene glass transition and rubber-phase morphology.

Compared with high-heat ABS grades based on α-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomers, HAC 8250 is not assumed to provide the same heat deflection performance. If service temperature under load exceeds 85 °C, the manufacturer should be asked to provide heat distortion temperature data under ISO 75-2:2013 at 1.8 MPa and 0.45 MPa. Compared with electroplating-grade ABS, direct substitution is not appropriate without butadiene particle-size analysis and acid-etch adhesion validation. Electroplating grades are typically controlled for rubber particle size distribution, degree of crosslinking, and surface oxidation; HAC 8250 may require plasma or chromic acid pretreatment before metallization if not originally supplied for that application.

Melt Processing Window and Drying Requirements

Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer is required before melting. Generic ABS practice uses a drying temperature of 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h and a final moisture content below 0.05 wt%. For HAC 8250, drying time depends on ambient relative humidity, regrind content, and hopper residence time; at relative humidity above 60%, extended drying or dehumidified storage should be applied. Moisture should be confirmed with a Karl Fischer titrator or a calibrated moisture analyzer before feedstock enters the barrel, because excessive water causes splay, lowers impact resistance, and can shift process viscosity.

The presence of regrind, color masterbatch, or processing aids shifts the processing envelope. Long residence time above 250 °C or high shear in hot-runner systems can degrade the butadiene phase, increasing yellowing and volatile emission. Barrel rear-zone temperature and screw speed should be reduced while maintaining melt homogeneity. Injection speed should be profiled to fill the gate quickly but avoid jetting in thick sections. Because high-flow ABS grades often show lower weld-line strength than low-flow grades, weld-line tensile properties should be tested under ISO 527-1:2019 using a two-gate mold.

No independent public dataset is available for HAC 8250, so on-site property validation should use injection-molded specimens prepared under ISO 294-3:2020. Tensile modulus and tensile yield stress are measured according to ISO 527-1:2019 and ISO 527-2:2012 at 1 mm/min for modulus and 50 mm/min for yield. Flexural modulus and flexural strength are measured under ISO 178:2019 at 2 mm/min. Notched Izod impact strength is measured under ISO 180:2019 with a 1.0 J or 2.0 J pendulum and a v-notch radius of 0.25 mm. Vicat softening temperature is measured under ISO 306:2022 using A50 or B50; the load and heating rate must be reported because the two methods do not produce interchangeable values. Heat deflection temperature is measured under ISO 75-2:2013 at 1.8 MPa and 0.45 MPa.

Conditioning before mechanical testing should follow ISO 291:2008 at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity for at least 40 h. Specimens should not be machined from thick plaques unless the product is intended for machining applications; injection-molded test specimens are preferred because they capture the actual melt orientation and skin-core structure. Mold shrinkage should be measured on plaques or plates with defined dimensions under ISO 294-3:2020; for general-purpose ABS, shrinkage parallel and perpendicular to flow commonly lies between 0.3% and 0.8%, but HAC 8250 shrinkage must be measured on the target tool geometry because flow orientation and packing shift the values.

Capillary rheometry at 220 °C, 230 °C, and 250 °C should be used to construct a shear viscosity master curve. The Bagley correction should be applied, and the Rabinowitsch-Weissenberg correction should be used for true shear rate. These measurements are more reliable than melt index for mold-filling simulation because ABS exhibits shear thinning and entrance pressure losses are significant. HAC 8250 is not expected to follow a single power-law model across the full shear rate range; therefore, the Cross-WLF model should be fitted to measured data for injection molding simulation.

Thermogravimetric analysis under nitrogen and air can be used to identify decomposition onset. ABS typically begins mass loss near 320 °C to 380 °C, but the exact onset depends on butadiene content and stabilizer package. HAC 8250 should not be processed above 250 °C for extended periods; at higher temperatures, the butadiene phase can undergo thermal oxidation, leading to discoloration and loss of impact. Production trials should monitor melt residence time using a colorimeter or yellowness index under ASTM E313-20.

When HAC 8250 Is Processed in High-Shear Injection Molding

On production equipment with clamp force above 1200 kN, the high-flow attributes of HAC 8250 are relevant for multi-cavity tools producing thin-wall housings, bezels, structural clips, and painted or plated trim. Cavity pressure sensors should be used to map pressure loss along the flow path; the material is expected to show lower pressure drop than a standard ABS at the same melt temperature, but the reduction in gate freeze time may increase seal time and shrink-rate variability. Mold-filling simulation should be based on measured viscosity data from a capillary rheometer fitted with a 1 mm × 20 mm die and corrected for entry pressure using the Bagley procedure. Melt index alone is not sufficient for predicting flow length in non-Newtonian ABS.

Differences from other products appear in gate blush, splay, and knit-line visibility. In hot-tip hot-runner systems, dark streaks may occur when the material remains at elevated temperature for more than 10 min. The shot size should cover at least 50% of the barrel capacity, and the machine should be purged after an unscheduled interruption. Mold temperature uniformity should be verified using infrared thermography; cavity-to-cavity variation above 5 °C can produce visible gloss differences on textured surfaces. If coloring is performed by dry blending with an ABS carrier masterbatch rather than by separate twin-screw compounding, the colorant carrier should be selected to match the viscosity of HAC 8250. Hot compounding on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 44:1 should maintain melt temperature no higher than 240 °C and vent vacuum below −0.08 MPa, unless the manufacturer supplies a different recommendation.

Compared with a medium-impact ABS with lower melt flow, HAC 8250 is expected to show a lower viscosity at screw-recovery shear rates, which reduces melt temperature rise from shear heating. However, if the molecular weight distribution is narrower to achieve flow, the melt may be more sensitive to temperature and less forgiving of cold sprue or hot-runner imbalance. Production-scale observation on similar high-flow ABS grades has shown that melt accumulation in hot-runner manifolds can produce brown streaks after 20 min stagnation. This is a useful boundary for HAC 8250 until grade-specific data are available.

Chemical resistance is limited by ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents

ABS HAC 8250 is expected to resist dilute aqueous acids, alkalis, and alcohols under unstressed conditions, but it is not resistant to ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, or aromatic hydrocarbons. Chemical resistance testing should follow ISO 22088-2:2006 or ASTM D543, with tensile properties retested under ISO 527-1:2019 after exposure. For painted or bonded assemblies, solvent-based primers containing esters can induce environmental stress cracking, especially when the molded part retains high internal stress from packing. Annealing at 80 °C for 1 h to 2 h before painting may reduce molded-in stress, but dimensions can shift and tool shrinkage allowances must account for this step. Cleaning with 70 vol% isopropanol is generally less aggressive than cleaning with methyl ethyl ketone; compatibility with HAC 8250 should be confirmed on molded plaques rather than on non-critical tabs.

Application-specific approvals for REACH, RoHS, and food-contact status under FDA 21 CFR are valid only when the current certificate is issued for HAC 8250 rather than for a related grade. Flammability classification under UL 94 must be confirmed at the final part thickness; a material may pass at 3.0 mm and fail at 1.5 mm. If the component is intended for household appliances, automotive interiors, or electrical enclosures, the relevant OEM standard may add requirements for fogging, odor, scratch resistance, and resistance to interior cleaning agents. Published data for this specific configuration are limited, so converters should obtain a laboratory sample and complete all application-specific tests before tool steel is committed.
