Shandong Haijiang Chemical ABS HJ15 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied as natural or pre-colored cylindrical pellets. The grade is positioned for injection molding and extrusion processes where a controlled melt-viscosity profile, surface finish, and room-temperature impact strength are required. The polymer matrix consists of a styrene-acrylonitrile random copolymer; discrete butadiene rubber domains are grafted with SAN and dispersed in the continuous phase. Because the product is not designated by an ISO 1043-1:2011 classification code, users should confirm the lot-specific Certificate of Analysis before setting production parameters. Acceptance controls for ABS HJ15 may be based on ISO 1133-1:2022 melt volume-flow rate at 220 °C/10 kg, ISO 1183-1:2019 density, ISO 527-2:2012 tensile properties, ISO 178:2019 flexural properties, ISO 180:2019 notched Izod impact, ISO 75-2:2013 heat deflection temperature, and ISO 306:2022 Vicat softening temperature. Where the manufacturer’s lot document is unavailable, incoming inspection should compare the material against the purchaser’s written resin specification; visual inspection alone is insufficient to detect rheological drift or rubber-phase degradation.
The evaluation sequence for ABS HJ15 begins with residual moisture determination. When hopper dryers operate above 80 °C, pellets can agglomerate; a desiccant dryer with dew point below −30 °C is used. The moisture target for ABS resins is generally below 0.05% by mass; water at higher concentrations produces splay, surface silver streaks, and a measurable drop in impact strength. After drying, melt volume-flow rate is determined according to ISO 1133-1:2022 with a 2.095 mm die, a test temperature of 220 °C, and a nominal load of 10 kg. The melt density for ABS is not constant; users should not convert MFR to MVR without a melt-density determination under the same conditions.

On production-scale injection molding equipment, ABS HJ15 is processed with a general-purpose screw having an L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. The barrel temperature profile is set with the rear zone at 190–210 °C, the middle zone at 200–220 °C, the front zone at 210–230 °C, and the nozzle at 215–240 °C. Mold surface temperature is maintained between 40 °C and 80 °C using a pressurized water or oil mold-temperature controller. If the mold temperature falls below 40 °C, flow marks and weld-line weakness may appear; if it exceeds 80 °C, cycle time increases and the part may stick in the cavity. Injection velocity is set to fill 95% of the cavity under velocity control, with a switch-over to holding pressure at 95–98% of the screw position. Holding pressure is applied from 30 MPa to 60 MPa hydraulic pressure, depending on the machine intensification ratio; the actual cavity pressure is monitored with a pressure sensor and held within 35–55 MPa for a gate-seal time of 3–8 s. Screw back pressure is set from 0.5 MPa to 1.5 MPa to avoid screw recovery time longer than cooling time. In extrusion, a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1, a barrier screw, and a screen pack of 60/80/100 mesh is used; melt temperature at the die is kept below 240 °C to limit thermal degradation of the butadiene phase. A melt pump between the extruder and die reduces pressure pulsation and improves sheet thickness tolerance to ±0.05 mm in gauges below 2.0 mm.
Comparative placement is determined primarily by the melt viscosity curve and rubber-phase architecture. High-flow ABS grades, with melt volume-flow rates above 20 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg, permit shorter cycle times in thin-wall parts below 1.5 mm, but they typically exhibit lower notched impact strength than medium-flow grades. Where HJ15 is controlled in a lower MVR band, the material is less likely to suffer jetting in thick-section molds but requires a higher injection pressure. On a 1,200 kN injection molding machine, a pressure drop of 10–20 MPa can be observed from nozzle to cavity in a two-cavity cold-runner tool; if the pressure requirement exceeds the machine’s maximum hydraulic pressure, the melt should be evaluated with a larger gate or a higher mold temperature. Against electroplating ABS, HJ15 is not specified for direct electrolytic plating. Plating-grade ABS contains an increased butadiene content and a surface-modifier package that permits adhesion of electroless nickel and copper after chromic acid etching according to ASTM B727-04; substituting HJ15 in a plating line can result in blistering and inconsistent metal adhesion after thermal cycling. Compared with heat-resistant ABS grades based on α-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomer, HJ15 is not designed for continuous service above 95 °C; parts exposed to 110 °C heat soaking require a dedicated heat-resistant grade with HDT above 105 °C under ISO 75-2:2013 Method A.
Applications for HJ15 include appliance console panels, electronic equipment enclosures, vacuum cleaner housings, and automotive interior trim. On a 2,500 kN injection molding machine with a hot runner manifold, the material is used to produce a housing weighing 450 g with a 2.2 mm nominal wall, using a valve-gated hot runner and a mold cavity pressure of 40 MPa at switch-over. The part is evaluated for dimensions after 24 h at 23 °C/50% relative humidity; the post-mold shrinkage is measured against the mold steel dimensions and is recorded as a percentage. Weld-line tensile specimens are cut from the molded part and tested at 23 °C according to ISO 527-2:2012; if the weld-line elongation at break drops below 8%, adjustments are made to the gate location, mold temperature, or melt temperature. Published data for HJ15-specific behavior in gas-assisted injection molding or microcellular foam processing is limited; processor trials are required before production approval.
Regulatory documentation should be requested from Shandong Haijiang Chemical for the specific lot. In the European Union, the base resin may be evaluated under Regulation EC No 1907/2006 as a polymer exempt from registration; however, imports must comply with the conditions of the exemption for monomers and additives. The RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II restrictions for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers apply to finished electrical/electronic equipment; the raw polymer should be tested according to IEC 62321-8:2017 for phthalates if the supply chain requires. In the United States, if HJ15 is used in food-contact articles, compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 is required; extraction limits for acrylonitrile and styrene monomer are specified in that regulation, and the supplier must provide migration data when the material is used in contact with food types assigned under the regulation.
Because ABS is hygroscopic, storage in a warehouse at relative humidity above 60% can raise pellet moisture above 0.1% by mass in 24 h if bags are open. Hopper residence time should not exceed 2 h in an open feed throat unless the area is conditioned. Regrind usage for HJ15 should be limited to 20 wt% in injection molding and 15 wt% in extrusion because repeated extrusion reduces notched impact strength and shifts melt volume-flow rate upward by 10–20%; the percentage limit should be validated by measuring the MVR of the regrind blend and comparing it to the virgin specification. The material is incompatible with ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents; these solvents cause environmental stress cracking in molded parts. For cleaning the machine after processing HJ15, use a purging compound compatible with ABS rather than PVC or acetal purge materials. If the screw remains idle at melt temperature for more than 10 min, purge before sampling to avoid degraded black specks from the dead zone.
In twin-screw compounding of ABS HJ15 with color masterbatch or external additives, a corotating intermeshing twin-screw extruder with L/D 40:1 is used. The screw speed is set between 300 rpm and 600 rpm, with the barrel temperature from 200 °C to 230 °C. Vacuum venting at −0.08 MPa is applied downstream of the melting zone to remove residual moisture and low-molecular-weight volatiles. If dispersion of carbon black or titanium dioxide is required, the color concentrate is metered at 2–5 wt%; masterbatch carriers must be selected from SAN-compatible systems to avoid delamination. The compounded pellets are dried again to below 0.05% moisture before final molding. Batch-to-batch variance in regrind color or impact retention should be tracked using ISO 180:2019 notched Izod specimens from molded plaques; a fall in impact strength greater than 10% relative to virgin material triggers review of regrind ratio and screw residence time.
The grade identifier ABS HJ15 is assigned by Shandong Haijiang Chemical; the prefix ABS identifies the resin family, while the suffix HJ15 is a manufacturer-specific grade designation. It does not itself specify melt flow rate, impact strength, or heat resistance under ISO 10350-1:2023. Users should specify “Shandong Haijiang Chemical ABS HJ15” and request the lot-specific Certificate of Analysis. The material is typically controlled for pellet size and bulk density according to ISO 60:1977; bulk density for ABS pellets is commonly 0.55–0.65 g/cm³. Residual styrene and acrylonitrile monomer levels should be reported in the supplier’s material declaration because they affect emissions during melt processing and may affect workplace exposure assessments under local occupational exposure limits.
Mold deposit formation is evaluated on a 1,500 kN injection molding machine after 5,000 cycles. If a white or brown film appears on the cavity surface before 2,000 cycles, the purge sequence, vent depth, and additive package should be reviewed. For textured surfaces, vent depth should not exceed 0.02 mm to prevent flash while allowing gas escape. Mold release agents are generally not required for HJ15; if used, only external release agents compatible with ABS should be applied at a maximum coating thickness of 5 µm to avoid visible surface haze and interference with post-molding adhesion.
For finished-part testing, environmental stress-cracking resistance is assessed according to ISO 22088-3:2006 using a fixed-strain method and a test medium representative of service. In electronic enclosure applications, parts exposed to isopropyl alcohol, sunscreen, or hand lotion should be assessed because these agents can initiate crazing in unstabilized ABS. At 23 °C, a strain level of 0.5% is used as a screening threshold; parts that craze below this level require design changes or a higher-molecular-weight ABS grade. The manufacturer’s published data for HJ15 under multi-axial impact is limited; for components subjected to drop impact, instrumented puncture testing according to ISO 6603-2:2023 is recommended at 23 °C, 0 °C, and −20 °C to define the ductile-to-brittle transition.
In sheet extrusion for thermoforming, ABS HJ15 is processed through a flat die with a lip gap set 10–15% larger than the final sheet gauge. Roll stack temperatures are held at 80–100 °C for gloss control; lower roll temperatures reduce surface gloss but increase frozen-in stress. Thermoforming of extruded sheet is performed at a sheet surface temperature of 150–180 °C; sheet temperatures above 190 °C cause sagging and non-uniform wall thickness. For deep-draw parts, plug-assisted thermoforming with a syntactic foam plug is used; the plug temperature is maintained at 90–110 °C to reduce sheet sticking. Formed parts are trimmed with steel-rule dies or CNC routers; edge chipping during routing is reduced by using a spiral-flute bit at 18,000–24,000 rpm and a feed rate of 2–4 m/min. Published data for HJ15-specific thermoforming window in production-scale sheet lines is limited; the above values are representative for medium-impact ABS grades and must be confirmed with the actual sheet gauge and orientation.
