    More Introduction

SHANDONG DAWN ABS HFABS-01 is an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade supplied as pelletized resin in moisture-barrier packaging. The grade is positioned for thin-wall components, multi-cavity tooling, and short-cycle moulding where melt fluidity governs filling pressure. Incoming inspection commonly records melt volume-flow rate according to ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C with 10 kg load. Manufacturer-published single-point values for HFABS-01 should be obtained from lot certificates; representative property windows for unfilled high-flow ABS injection grades are provided below for engineering screening only.

What processing constraints govern moisture control and melt plastication?

Moisture control is the first boundary condition. ABS pellets that exceed 0.1 wt% water before plastication can develop surface splay, edge delamination, and molecular weight loss during heating. A desiccant-bed dryer operating at 80 °C to 85 °C for 2 h to 4 h is used, with supply-air dew point below -30 °C. When ambient relative humidity rises above 60 %, drying time is shifted to the upper bound or closed-loop drying is applied. Barrel temperature profiles from rear zone to nozzle are typically set at 210 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C, and 235 °C. Residence time above 250 °C is restricted because thermal degradation of the polybutadiene phase increases yellowing and reduces impact strength. Screw recovery speed is limited to avoid adiabatic shear exceeding the melt-temperature limit. Back pressure between 0.3 MPa and 0.7 MPa is applied for melt homogenization without excessive shear heating. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; dryer and barrel conditions are drawn from standard high-flow ABS processing bulletins.

Melt rheology, short-shot prevention, and gate freeze-off in multi-cavity tooling

The elevated fluidity of HFABS-01 is best characterized by melt volume-flow rate rather than melt mass-flow rate. A high-flow ABS grade may exhibit a melt volume-flow rate of 20 cm³/10 min to 40 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg; general-purpose ABS commonly falls between 8 cm³/10 min and 18 cm³/10 min. This difference reduces injection pressure in wall sections below 1.2 mm and permits lower melt temperatures during filling. However, high fluidity can reduce shear heating at the gate and promote jetting if gate geometry is not optimized. Pinpoint gates require minimum land lengths of 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm; fan gates are preferred for large-area surfaces. In multi-cavity hot-runner systems, cavity-to-cavity mass balance is typically controlled within ±2 % to prevent simultaneous short shots and flash. Gate freeze-off is shortened by low melt viscosity, so velocity-to-pressure switch-over should occur before 95 % fill volume. Holding pressure between 40 MPa and 70 MPa is applied for 0.5 s/mm to 1.0 s/mm of section thickness to limit sink marks. These are general high-flow ABS tooling conditions; mould trials are required for lot-specific confirmation.

Mechanical property screening for unfilled high-flow ABS injection grades is bounded by the expected trade-off between flow and impact. The tensile yield stress, flexural modulus, and notched impact strength of HFABS-01 should be read against lot certificates. Representative high-flow ABS ranges are shown alongside general-purpose ABS in the comparative table below.

PropertyTest methodUnitHigh-flow ABS representative rangeGeneral-purpose ABS representative range

    Melt volume-flow rate, 220 °C/10 kgISO 1133-1:2022cm³/10 min20–408–18

This envelope indicates that the high-flow product positions the balance toward fill speed while carrying a moderate reduction in notched impact and thermal resistance. The difference is most evident in components with flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 200:1, where general-purpose grades may require melt temperatures approaching 250 °C and risk degradation. Published data for this specific HFABS-01 configuration is limited, and lot-specific certificates remain the controlling document for design allowable values.

When flame-retardant or mineral-filled ABS grades are replaced downstream, what changes affect tool maintenance and post-moulding?

Substitution of flame-retardant ABS with HFABS-01 removes brominated or phosphorus-based additive packages and optional antimony oxide from the melt stream. This change typically lowers melt viscosity and reduces mould deposit formation on vent surfaces. However, HFABS-01 is an unfilled, non-flame-retardant ABS and is not rated for electrical applications requiring UL 94 V-0 performance at 1.5 mm unless the finished article is housed within an enclosure already meeting that rating. Against mineral-filled ABS, HFABS-01 has lower density, typically 1.04 g/cm³ to 1.06 g/cm³, and reduced abrasion on tool steel. It also exhibits higher mould shrinkage anisotropy; mould shrinkage may range from 0.4 % to 0.7 % in the flow direction and 0.3 % to 0.6 % transverse, requiring dimensional validation in tool trials. Paint adhesion after flame treatment or primer application is generally acceptable, but lacquering systems should be tested for hydrocarbon migration from the rubber phase. Avoid amine-containing mould-release agents or amine-based lubricants; these additives can induce surface streaking and interfere with post-moulding adhesion.

Regulatory status and chemical-resistance boundary conditions

The polymer system is normally assessed against REACH Annex XVII restricted substances, RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II, and, where applicable, migration limits under EU 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 180.22. No blanket food-contact approval is assigned to HFABS-01; end-use confirmation must be obtained from the manufacturer’s compliance certificate. Chemical resistance is typical of ABS: aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents attack the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and should be excluded from cleaning and service environments. Brief contact with isopropanol and ethanol is tolerated, but acetone and methyl ethyl ketone can cause environmental stress cracking. Continuous outdoor weathering without UV stabilization leads to chalking, yellowing, and embrittlement of the butadiene phase. If exterior use is intended, the part must be coated, painted, or compounded with adequate UV stabilization. Accelerated weathering should follow ISO 4892-2:2013 using lot-specific plaques.

Lot-to-lot melt viscosity variation should be monitored at receiving inspection. If melt volume-flow rate falls below the lower control limit, injection pressure in multi-cavity tools rises non-linearly; if it exceeds the upper control limit, flash and jetting become more frequent. The processing window is narrowest when melt temperature is constrained to 230 °C ± 5 °C for surface gloss consistency on textured surfaces. Short shots in one cavity can be masked by flash in another when cavity pressure sensors are not used. A production-scale electric injection-moulding machine with clamp force from 1,200 kN to 4,000 kN and shot weight at 40 % to 70 % of injection unit capacity is recommended. Use of a general-purpose screw with compression ratio of 2.5:1 to 3:1 and check-ring wear below 0.05 % reduces melt leakage and viscosity drift during extended production.
