In automotive exterior mirror housing production, GELOY™ ASA XTPM405 is introduced as dried pellet feedstock and processed on reciprocating-screw injection moulding machines with screw diameters between 36 mm and 60 mm, screw L/D ratios from 20:1 to 24:1, and clamp force capacities ranging from 1,500 kN to 2,800 kN. Pre-drying is fixed at 80 °C for 3–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a -30 °C dew point, reducing residual moisture below 0.05 wt%; higher moisture produces silver streaking at the gate and loss of surface gloss on textured tool faces. The melt-temperature window is held between 240 °C and 270 °C, while the tool surface is kept at 40–80 °C depending on grain depth and cycle time; shot weight is sized to occupy 50–70% of barrel capacity to avoid excessive residence time. The formulation typically blends 80–90 wt% virgin XTPM405 with 10–20 wt% clean, dry in-house regrind and 2–4 wt% ASA-compatible colour masterbatch; regrind above 20 wt% lowers notched Izod values under ASTM D256-10 and widens the standard deviation of lot-to-lot gloss. When colour masterbatch is precompounded rather than purchased, it is prepared on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 40:1 L/D and strand pelletizing; the resulting concentrate is metered at the same 2–4 wt% addition ratio. Gate design uses a fan or tab gate placed in a non-appearance boss area to prevent jetting, and venting is cut to 0.02–0.03 mm depth at the end-of-fill; knit lines around mirror mounting bosses are minimized by increasing local wall thickness by 8–12% and by sequencing valve-gate nozzles where hot-runner systems are installed. Weathering qualification follows SAE J2527 or ISO 4892-2:2013 for exterior unpainted trim, while lot-release tensile properties are checked according to ASTM D638-14 and ASTM D790-17; flammability classification is UL 94 HB at the moulded thickness. Components produced include exterior mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, A-pillar covers, and front grille insert frames.
Coextrusion of XTPM405 capstock onto rigid PVC-U lineals is run on a dedicated single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D and a barrier screw designed for amorphous styrenic copolymers, feeding a multi-manifold die or a feedblock with independently controlled melt-stream temperatures. The ASA cap layer is held at 220–240 °C, while the PVC-U substrate melt is maintained at 180–195 °C; a melt pump on the capstock line is critical to hold layer-thickness variation within ±1% because the capstock mass fraction is only 5–10 wt% of the total lineal profile, corresponding to a dry layer thickness of 0.10–0.25 mm. Capstock regrind is capped at 20 wt% of the cap layer to avoid visible specks from partial gelation and to preserve colour retention tested under ASTM D7251-17 and gloss retention under ASTM D523; unpainted profiles are evaluated for weatherability in xenon-arc testing per ISO 4892-2:2013, using delta-E and delta-gloss limits defined by the window profile system supplier. Substrate mechanical requirements are governed by EN 12608-1:2016 for PVC-U profile materials, while the finished coextruded lineal is subjected to adhesion checks after repeated thermal cycling; delamination is avoided by keeping the melt-stream temperature differential below 20 °C at the feedblock and by specifying a compatible styrenic tie layer when the substrate formulation contains high plasticizer levels. Direct contact with flexible PVC containing monomeric plasticizer is excluded because plasticizer migration into the ASA cap layer suppresses surface hardness and accelerates gloss loss. The downstream line includes vacuum calibration at 150–250 mbar absolute pressure, water cooling at 15–25 °C, and in-line laser width gauges; output is cut into window lineals, door jambs, mullion covers, and siding accessory trims.
Because outdoor electrical enclosures are exposed to ultraviolet radiation, rain, and thermal cycling, XTPM405 is moulded without mineral fillers to maintain low-temperature impact response, and is used as the uncoated housing material only where the assembly-level ingress protection is provided by gasket compression and tongue-and-groove joints. The blend ratio is maintained at 95–100 wt% XTPM405 with 0–5 wt% UV-stable colour masterbatch; carbon black loadings above 2 wt% are avoided in non-conductive enclosure bodies where surface resistivity must remain above 10⁹ Ω/sq, and any antistatic package must be qualified separately because it can reduce colour stability under UL 746C f1 outdoor exposure. Moulding is performed on hydraulic or servo-electric injection moulding machines of 800–1,600 kN clamp force, with melt temperature 240–260 °C, tool temperature 50–70 °C, and wall thickness held between 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm for flat-cover warpage control. Hot-runner valve gates are preferred to reduce gate vestige and to sequence filling of large flat covers; the tool is vented along the parting line and at the last fill point to prevent burn marks. Production batches are tested for notched Izod according to ASTM D256-10, tensile modulus according to ASTM D638-14, and Vicat softening according to ISO 306/A120. The enclosure material is listed under UL 94 HB and is evaluated for outdoor suitability under UL 746C f1; final enclosure ratings such as IEC 60529 IP66 are assembly-level certifications and are not material properties. Terminal parts include outdoor telecommunication enclosures, junction boxes, energy-storage disconnect housings, and weatherproof switch boxes.

For recreational water contact parts, XTPM405 is selected as an unplated, UV-stable alternative where the component is not continuously immersed in high-concentration chlorinated water; published data for this specific configuration is limited, so qualification is performed on finished parts under NSF/ANSI 50-2021 material exposure and immersion protocols. The formulation is restricted to 100 wt% natural XTPM405 or 97–98 wt% XTPM405 with 2–3 wt% ASA-compatible colour masterbatch; regrind is capped at 15 wt% because repeated heat history and chloramine contact can reduce notched Izod under ASTM D256-10 more rapidly than ultraviolet exposure alone. Processing is performed at melt temperatures of 240–255 °C and tool temperatures of 50–70 °C, using sequential valve gating on spa control panel tools to eliminate visible flow lines; pre-drying at 80 °C for 3 h is mandatory when ambient RH exceeds 60%. The material should not be combined with amine-based heat stabilizers because residual amines accelerate yellowing in chlorinated water; this limits the use of certain pre-coloured concentrates designed for other polymer families. Finished components comprise pool pump lids, filter valve bodies, spa control panels, and heater side shrouds.
When XTPM405 is selected as the thermoformable sheet material for RV exterior skirts and truck bed caps, the resin is first extruded on a single-screw sheet line with 30:1 L/D barrier screw, melt temperature 230–250 °C, and a horizontal three-roll polishing stack with roll temperatures of 80–100 °C; the resulting sheet thickness is typically 3–6 mm, and residual moisture above 0.05 wt% causes microvoids that become visible after thermoforming. The sheet formulation uses 70–85 wt% virgin XTPM405 and 15–30 wt% clean skeletal regrind, with 0–2 wt% colour masterbatch; regrind above 30 wt% widens sheet sag variability during zoned infrared heating because molecular weight distribution is broadened by repeated extrusion. Compliance for exterior panels is assessed under ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc weathering and SAE J2527 for automotive-derived exterior trim durability; if the formed panel is installed in an interior-adjacent position, FMVSS 302 flammability data are also provided. Thermoforming is run with sheet surface temperature between 160 °C and 190 °C, using top and bottom ceramic heaters zoned to control sag; mould temperature is held at 60–80 °C for grain reproduction and dimensional recovery. Failure modes observed on production lines include die lines from contaminated regrind, blush at sharp corners when temperature is below 160 °C, and webbing from overheated sheet above 190 °C. Thermoformed articles include RV exterior skirts, truck bed caps, storage box lids, and aftermarket fender flares.
High-gloss garden equipment engine shrouds and seat shells use XTPM405 in colours requiring long-term UV stability, with a formulation of 97–100 wt% virgin XTPM405 and 2–3 wt% UV-stable colour masterbatch; the grade is processed without additional impact modifiers because the base gloss and low-temperature ductility are already specified for outdoor power equipment. Injection moulding is performed with polished cavity surfaces, melt temperature 240–260 °C, tool temperature 50–70 °C, and clamp force of 1,800–3,500 kN depending on shroud projected area. Hot-runner valve gates are used to minimize gate marks on high-gloss surfaces, and polished ejector sleeves prevent visible pin marks. Compliance includes ISO 4892-2:2013 for xenon-arc weathering, ASTM D523 for specular gloss retention, and UL 94 HB for flammability classification at minimum wall thickness. Products manufactured include lawn tractor hoods, engine shrouds, seat shells, and rear discharge chute covers.
