Application of SABIC GELOY™ ASA XTPM309E

SABIC GELOY™ XTPM309E is an ASA (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) resin specified for weatherable injection molding and coextrusion capstock processes. The downstream scenarios below are limited to sectors where ASA ultraviolet resistance, low moisture uptake, and retention of matte or grained surface texture under thermal cycling align with product certification demands. Published data for this specific grade configuration is limited; processing values therefore derive from documented ASA production practice and must be verified against the current SABIC datasheet and the processor’s first-article validation under the cited test methods.

How Does GELOY™ XTPM309E Maintain Grained Surface Appearance in Automotive Exterior Trim?

Automotive mirror housings and cowl vent grilles are exposed to UV radiation, road salt spray, pressure washing, and repeated thermal shock from engine heat and solar load. In this scenario, GELOY™ XTPM309E is processed as a pigmented ASA resin; the formula addition level for Class A exterior parts is 100 wt% virgin granules, with regrind limited to 10–15 wt% because higher regrind fractions change surface gloss and increase the coefficient of friction in textured grain. For PC/ASA hybrid parts that require continuous service above 110 °C, the ASA phase is set at 40–60 wt% with polycarbonate; below 40 wt% ASA, xenon-arc exposure data from production validation show accelerated gloss loss and chalking. Carbon black masterbatch at 2–4 phr or lightfast inorganic color concentrates at 2–3 phr are used depending on the OEM color palette. Metallic flake masterbatches above 1 wt% are not recommended for mirror housings because flake orientation at weld lines produces visible flow lines.

Compliance is anchored to FMVSS 302 for horizontal burn rate of interior-adjacent trim, while exterior performance is validated under SAE J2527 xenon arc using extended UV filters. Typical OEM acceptance criteria for this part class are ΔE* ≤ 1.5–2.0 after 1,500–2,000 kJ/m² and ISO 105-A02 grayscale ≥ 4 after 3,000 kJ/m². Mechanical retention is checked by ISO 527-2 tensile yield, ISO 178 flexural modulus, and ISO 179/1eU Charpy impact at 23 °C. Dimensional stability after thermal cycling from −20 °C to 80 °C at 5 cycles/day is measured by post-mold shrinkage; ASA parts are accepted when shrinkage is between 0.4% and 0.7% and when mounting boss positions remain within ±0.2 mm of CAD. No UL 94 V-0 claim is made for this unfilled grade; if the application has V-0 requirements, the part must use an internal metal substrate or an alternative flame-retardant ASA/PC grade.

Injection molding operations for this scenario use reciprocating screw machines with 20:1–22:1 L/D, clamp force of 1,500–3,000 kN for mirror housings and 5,000–12,000 kN for full cowl grilles. Pre-drying is mandatory at 80 °C for 4 h in a desiccant dryer with dew point ≤ −40 °C; maximum residual moisture is 0.05%. Melt temperature is set in the range 240–260 °C, and mold surface temperature is kept at 50–80 °C to reproduce grain depth. A grained cavity of 5–12 µm texture depth requires injection speed of 40–80 mm/s and packing pressure 60–80 MPa for 6–10 s. Gate location is placed away from visible Class A surfaces; if valve gates are used, gate vestige height is held below 0.15 mm. Field failure patterns from production lines include silver streaking from moisture above 0.05%, gate blush from regrind above 25 wt%, and gloss banding near hot runner tips when manifold temperature exceeds 270 °C. Final terminal part types include painted or molded-in-color mirror housing shells, cowl vent grilles, roof rail covers, B-pillar matte panels, tailgate handle covers, and roof antenna covers.

Capstock Coextrusion Window Profile Geometry and the Problem of Die Swell

Window and door profile capstock coextruded over PVC substrate uses a thin ASA weathering layer because the substrate cannot withstand UV without chalking. Here GELOY™ XTPM309E is metered as 100 wt% of the cap layer only; the cap layer thickness is set at 0.25–0.50 mm, which represents 8–15 wt% of the total profile cross-section depending on hollow chamber geometry. For white profiles, titanium dioxide is added to the cap layer at 8–12 phr via an ASA-based masterbatch. Acrylic processing aids are deliberately excluded from the capstock because they raise melt viscosity and cause local stagnation in the feedblock. The PVC substrate is stabilized with Ca/Zn rather than lead or barium/cadmium packages to reduce metal carboxylate migration into the ASA interface. Dark-color capstock formulations use 0.3–0.8 wt% UV absorber package and carbon black at 2–4 phr; these levels are validated by microtome cross-section UV transmission rather than visual inspection.

The coextrusion line uses a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder for the PVC substrate at 190–200 °C and a single-screw barrier screw with 35:1 L/D for the ASA cap layer. Melt temperature for the ASA cap layer is held at 230–250 °C, with head pressure 10–18 MPa. The cap layer melt temperature is deliberately kept 10–15 °C above the PVC substrate melt to equalize viscosity at the feedblock. Die swell at the profile die is managed by using a land length of 35–45 mm; production trials on a 45 mm, 35:1 L/D capstock line show melt fracture onset above 60 rpm when die relief angle is below 3°. For this reason screw speed is typically limited to 20–40 rpm. Vacuum calibration plates at 15–20 °C maintain the low-gloss surface; a warmer calibration above 25 °C creates chattering marks on the ASA cap layer. Puller speed is set to the profile line speed with 0.5–1.0% elastic recovery compensation, and cutoff is performed after cooling to below 40 °C to avoid cap layer delamination at the saw cut. The most common field failure is capstock delamination at miter joints caused by saw heat above 60 °C or by PVC substrate moisture above 0.3%; both are controlled before coextrusion.

Compliance for finished profile systems is tested under EN 12608-1:2016 for dimensional tolerances, impact resistance, and corner strength; for North American PVC profiles, ASTM D4726-17 is referenced. Weathering is evaluated under ISO 4892-2 xenon arc at 4,000–6,000 h with grayscale and ΔE* measured per ISO 105-A02. In regions with high UV, the cap layer is qualified with 6,000 h and ΔE* ≤ 3.0. Mechanical shock after weathering is performed by falling-weight impact at −10 °C. Terminal product types include window lineals, door frame outboard lites, sliding door frames, fence pickets, rain gutter profiles, and exterior cladding battens.

For coextruded roof sheet cap layers, GELOY™ XTPM309E is used as the weathering outermost skin over either PVC or polycarbonate core layers. The ASA cap layer is formulated at 100 wt% of the skin layer, with total skin thickness 50–120 µm. At a 1,200 µm flat sheet, this cap layer corresponds to 4–10 wt% of the total sheet; for a 10 mm multiwall sheet, the cap layer mass is below 2 wt% but the layer must be distributed with thickness variation below ±5 µm to prevent UV-transparent thin zones. The coextrusion line includes a 90 mm core extruder and a 32 mm cap-layer extruder with melt pump; cap layer melt temperature is set at 245–255 °C, pump pressure 8–14 MPa, and feedblock temperature 250–260 °C. Polishing roll stack temperature is held at 70–90 °C to control cap layer gloss and to prevent delamination at the skin-core interface below 60 °C. Thermoforming of ASA-capped sheet into corrugated profiles requires sheet surface temperature 150–170 °C; below 135 °C the ASA skin tears at the corrugation draw edge. For multiwall geometries, the cap layer is applied to the outer skin only, and the web legs are cut from the core material so that the ASA layer does not interrupt light transmission.

Compliance is anchored to EN 16153:2014+A1:2015 for light-transmitting multiwall polycarbonate sheets, with accelerated weathering per ISO 4892-2 and transmission yellowing measured after 5,000 h. Adhesion of the ASA cap layer after 40 °C/95% RH conditioning is validated by ISO 2409 crosshatch to classification 1. For opaque white sheets, titanium dioxide at 6–10 phr is used in the cap layer; for dark roof sheets, carbon black masterbatch at 2–4 phr is added. If the sheet is used in hail-condition roofing, 2–5 wt% of an ASA-compatible impact modifier can be added to the cap layer, but this reduces scratch resistance and is avoided in warehouse clerestory glazing edges. Processing regrind is not applied to the cap layer because contaminated regrind reduces UV stability; it is routed to the core layer at up to 15 wt% only if melt filter and moisture are controlled. Terminal product types include corrugated roof panels, box-section wall cladding, opaque end caps for polycarbonate glazing bars, multiwall sheet edge closures, and fascia trim for industrial skylights.

If the Enclosure Must Meet UL 746C Outdoor Suitability Without V-0 Resin

Outdoor electrical enclosures injection-molded from GELOY™ XTPM309E are specified where the housing is not a live-part support or where the electrical assembly is contained within a separately certified metal sub-chassis. The unfilled ASA grade is used at 100 wt% for enclosure bodies, with regrind limited to 15 wt% or less because higher regrind fractions increase post-mold shrinkage variation to 0.7–0.9% and shift gasket groove width beyond tolerance. Black enclosures incorporate 0.5–2 wt% carbon black masterbatch; light gray and signal colors use 2–3 wt% inorganic masterbatch. Flame-retardant additives are not used with this grade because dispersion at the wall thickness required for UL 94 V-0 is outside the documented processing envelope. Any market claim for V-0 must be transferred to a flame-retardant ASA/PC or PC/ABS grade, not this material.

Compliance is anchored to IEC 62208:2011 for empty enclosures used in low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, with ingress protection tested to IEC 60529 IP65, mechanical impact tested to IEC 62262 with IK ratings, and material outdoor suitability assessed under UL 746C for UV, water exposure, and long-term heat aging. Weathering is additionally tested under ISO 4892-2 xenon arc at 3,000–5,000 h; the acceptance criterion is grayscale ≥ 4 per ISO 105-A02 and ΔE* ≤ 3.0 for non-black colors. Dimensional stability is measured under thermal cycling from −20 °C to 70 °C at 5 cycles/day; enclosures with 3 mm wall sections are checked for corner flatness and gasket groove width before assembly. The material is not used in direct contact with energized conductors at voltages above 50 V unless an internal insulating barrier is present.

Injection molding uses clamp force from 1,200–5,000 kN for small terminal boxes and 8,000–16,000 kN for large telecom splice enclosures. Drying at 80 °C for 4 h is required; dew point ≤ −40 °C and residual moisture ≤ 0.05% prevent silver streaks. Melt temperature is 240–260 °C, mold temperature 50–70 °C, with wall thickness 2.5–4.0 mm. Injection time is 1.5–2.0 s, packing pressure 50–70 MPa for 8–12 s, cooling time 20–30 s; gate diameter is 1.2–1.8 mm and positioned at a rib junction rather than at a gasket groove. Field failure data from production lines show warpage at ultrasonic weld lines when cooling is below 18 s; increasing cooling to 25 s and lowering mold temperature to 50 °C improves gasket track roundness. Terminal product types include streetlight terminal boxes, telecommunication splice boxes, EV charger cable management housings classified as non-current-carrying, outdoor CCTV camera mounts, and solar combiner box covers.

In turf-care and compact agricultural equipment, pigmented exterior panels made from GELOY™ XTPM309E are used because the unpainted polymer must survive UV, wet grass cuttings, diesel fume residue, and pressure washing without post-mold lacquer. The formula addition level is 100 phr ASA granules with 2–3 phr high-flow color masterbatch; if Class A grain is required, no mineral fillers are used because they increase surface gloss and lower impact. For horizontal surfaces with high abrasion from boots and tools, 1–2 wt% of a PMMA or styrene-acrylonitrile modifier can be added, but freeze impact below −20 °C must be revalidated because additive dispersion depends on screw recovery rate and back pressure. Regrind from rejected parts is allowed at up to 15 wt% when dried in a closed desiccant system; ratios above 20% produce visible flow lines on textured surfaces and lower notched impact by more than the part design margin.

Compliance for agricultural equipment is usually driven by OEM durability specifications rather than building codes, but weathering is tested under SAE J2527 or ISO 4892-2; procurement specifications frequently require color shift ΔE* ≤ 2.0 after 1,200 kJ/m² and no visible chalking after 2,000 kJ/m². Mechanical properties are verified by ASTM D256 notched Izod at 23 °C and ISO 527-2 tensile yield after weathering; impact retention after UV is compared to a control specimen from the same production lot. Molded-in-color parts are assessed for gloss and grain retreat per OEM visual standards, and gloss after weathering is measured with a 60° glossmeter, with acceptance bands usually 1.5–3.5 GU for matte textures. Chemical resistance against diesel, hydraulic oil, and commercial detergent is tested by short-term spot exposure and assessed by visible whitening or softening.

Large-area mower hoods and fender panels are injection molded on 8,000–16,000 kN clamp machines with sequential valve gates. Screw L/D is 22:1, melt temperature 240–255 °C, mold temperature 50–65 °C, and injection speed is set to achieve short shot-free filling in 2.5–4.0 s. Hot runner tip diameters are 2.0–2.5 mm to reduce shear-induced silver streaks and gate blush. Textured surfaces of 8–15 µm depth are retained better when the cavity is filled with high flow and when the mold is not overpacked; sink marks around ribs are controlled by keeping rib thickness below 50% of nominal wall. Hole diameter shrinkage of 0.5–0.7% is calibrated in first-article inspection downstream. Final part types include grass trimmer engine cowlings, compact tractor fender extensions, walk-behind mower dash panels, seed hopper lids, golf cart wheel arches, and turf sprayer tank brackets.

Chlorinated Water Aerosol on ASA Spa Panels

Pool and spa cabinet panels injection-molded or extruded from GELOY™ XTPM309E are exposed to chlorinated water aerosol, UV, and cyclic humidity. The ASA resin is used at 100 wt% of the cap or panel layer; flat panels are extruded at 3.0–4.0 mm thickness or injection molded with the same wall range. Titanium dioxide at 3–5 wt% is used in light colors, carbon black masterbatch at 2–3 wt% in dark colors; metallic pigments above 1 wt% are excluded because flake orientation at weld lines and high gloss variation after chlorine exposure reduce visual consistency. If the panel is assembled with structural foam or wood composite backing, the ASA layer is used as a weathering skin and the bond line is verified by peel testing because hygroscopic substrate movement can delaminate the skin in freeze-thaw cycles.

Compliance is typically to UL 94 HB for the cabinet sidewall, UL 746C for outdoor plastic exposure, and IEC 60529 IPX5 when the panel surrounds spa pump wiring. Chemical resistance is tested using ISO 175 immersion in 10% sodium hypochlorite at 23 °C for 168 h, followed by visual change rating per ISO 105-A02 grayscale; accepted parts maintain grayscale ≥ 4 and show no surface grazing. Weathering is performed by ISO 4892-2 xenon arc at 3,000–5,000 h with ΔE* ≤ 3.0. Unlike structural building panels, spa cabinetry does not usually carry a harmonized building product standard; the manufacturer retains responsibility for end-product certification.

Sheet extrusion for spa skirt panels uses a 75 mm extruder with 30:1 L/D and a 1,200 mm die; melt temperature is 230–250 °C and roll stack temperature is 70–85 °C. Panels are routed and bent with hot gas welding at 180–200 °C; joint strength is lower if the ASA surface is wet or if welding speed exceeds 0.8 m/min. Injection molding of pump covers uses mold temperature 50–70 °C, injection speed 30–60 mm/s, and packing pressure 60–80 MPa for 8–12 s. Ribs behind the visible surface are limited to 50% of wall thickness to avoid sink marks; use of molded-in bosses for self-tapping screws requires boss outer diameter at least 2.5 times the screw nominal diameter. Field inspection of panels exposed to daily chlorinated splash for 12 months shows no stress crazing when parts are annealed at 80 °C for 2 h after machining; parts that skip annealing exhibit fine microcracks near routed edges. Terminal product types include spa skirt panels, pool pump equipment covers, outdoor shower valve enclosures, underwater light niche trim rings classified as non-current-carrying, and pool control pad housings.
