Application of SABIC GELOY™ ASA G2980

Outdoor Telecommunication Enclosures and Weatherable Housing Components

Telecom base station enclosures, remote radio unit shrouds, and fiber distribution node covers require injection-molded parts with weatherable surface retention and stable mechanical properties over service intervals exceeding 10 years. SABIC GELOY™ ASA G2980 is processed into front covers and rear shells with nominal wall thickness between 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm. Pre-drying is executed in a closed-loop desiccant dryer at 80°C for 3 h to 4 h to reduce moisture below 0.05%. Dew point at the dryer outlet is maintained at ≤ -30°C. On a 2200 kN hydraulic toggle injection molding machine with a 40 mm three-zone screw, a melt temperature range of 245°C to 255°C and a mold temperature of 55°C to 65°C produce minimal sink marks above rib intersections. Screw back pressure is held at 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa to avoid excessive shear heating. Recovery speed is limited to 0.12 m/s.

Tooling design for enclosure covers typically includes multiple hot-drop gates to reduce flow length. The part-level flow length to wall thickness ratio should remain below 150:1 to avoid short shots. Gate tip temperature is controlled at 240°C to 250°C. Gate tip temperatures above 260°C produce gate blush on textured surfaces. Molded parts are evaluated according to ISO 291 at 23°C and 50% relative humidity before mechanical testing. Dimensional stability after molding is monitored with ISO 294-4 shrinkage plates. Under-packing at rib intersections causes sink depths beyond 0.02 mm, which becomes visible after painting or metallization.

Weatherability for telecom enclosure components is defined by ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 at 0.51 W/m² at 340 nm and black panel temperature 65°C. Acceptance for colour stability is typically ΔE* ≤ 3.0 after 2000 h against ISO 11664-4. Impact retention is measured with ISO 180/1A notched Izod at 23°C. Outdoor suitability for electrical enclosures is commonly referenced to UL 746C. The flammability class for G2980 must be verified against the supplier UL Yellow Card. Exterior ASA grades are generally UL 94 HB. Ingress protection testing per IEC 60529 for IP55 or IP65 is carried out on the finished assembly, not on the raw resin.

Within automotive exterior trim programs, unpainted ASA components replace painted ABS where stone-chip resistance and multi-substrate colour matching are specified. Typical parts include exterior mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, and side air vent louvers with nominal wall thickness from 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm. Molded parts must satisfy vehicle exterior appearance standards under SAE J2527 at 0.55 W/m² at 340 nm. The melt temperature for G2980 in automotive tooling is held at 245°C to 260°C to ensure complete filling of long flow paths. Injection speed is set between 60 mm/s and 120 mm/s. Mold temperature is maintained at 50°C to 70°C using a water thermolator. On a 1800 kN servo-hydraulic press, a cowl vent grille with 2.5 mm wall and flow length 450 mm can be molded with two sequential valve gates. Gate opening is delayed by 0.5 s after the first melt front passes the second gate. This sequence reduces knit-line depth at the visible Class A surface.

Weld line impact strength is a critical concern in grille ribs and mirror housing mounting bosses. At melt temperatures below 240°C, ISO 179/1eA notched Charpy impact at weld line has been observed to fall below 7 kJ/m², compared with 12 kJ/m² for the bulk material. Above 265°C, the surface develops gloss above 4.0 units at 60°, and the risk of thermal degradation appears as yellowing. Screw residence time should not exceed 6 min at 250°C. Purging between colours or grades is recommended with a low-density polyethylene or commercial purging compound. Direct transitions from polycarbonate to G2980 without purging can generate interference layers at the gate.

The chemical resistance of ASA in automotive exterior service includes exposure to sodium chloride, road spray, and neutral car wash detergents. Direct immersion in ester-based solvents or brake fluid is not recommended. Published data for G2980 under continuous exposure to aromatic hydrocarbons is limited. Venting features and snap-fit hooks are designed with ISO 6603-2 multi-axial impact at -30°C as a performance target. For mirror housing assemblies, thermal expansion mismatch with adjacent polycarbonate lens frames is addressed by slot tolerances of 0.15 mm per 100 mm joint length.

What Limits Capstock Thickness in High-UV Coextruded Profiles?

Window lineals, fascia boards, and fence rails coextruded from ASA capstock over rigid PVC require a balance between ultraviolet shielding, surface gloss, and interfacial adhesion. SABIC GELOY™ ASA G2980 is an injection molding grade, so its melt strength and drawdown behaviour in profile extrusion must be verified by capillary rheometry before production. The cap layer thickness for typical PVC-ASA profiles is held between 0.15 mm and 0.30 mm. At thicknesses below 0.10 mm, colour distribution becomes uneven and early surface erosion may expose the substrate. At thicknesses above 0.35 mm, thermal expansion mismatch between ASA and PVC can induce profile bowing after cooling.

The dominant process conflict is the melt temperature requirement at the feedblock. ASA requires a temperature of 220°C to 240°C for adequate flow and bond strength. Rigid PVC degrades through dehydrochlorination when exposed above 190°C for more than 30 s in the feedblock. Therefore, independent thermal control of the capstock and substrate channels is mandatory. Coextrusion trials on a 35 mm single-screw extruder with L/D 24:1 and a three-zone screw for the cap layer, combined with a 65 mm main extruder for the PVC substrate, show that the capstock melt should enter the feedblock at 225°C ± 5°C. Higher capstock temperatures create drag flow instabilities at the die exit.

The apparent shear viscosity ratio between the capstock and the substrate at the feedblock is a controlling parameter. Measurements taken with a capillary rheometer at 220°C and shear rates from 100 s⁻¹ to 1000 s⁻¹ indicate that a viscosity ratio between 1.5:1 and 2.5:1 yields uniform layer thickness. Ratios below 1.2:1 tend to produce interfacial waviness; ratios above 3.0:1 may cause capstock encapsulation at weld lines. Published data for G2980 in this specific configuration is limited. The table below is a general guideline from commercial coextrusion operations.

Cap Layer ThicknessApparent Viscosity Ratio (ASA/PVC)Observed Defect
    0.10 mm≤ 1.2:1interfacial waviness, uneven colour
    0.20 mm1.5:1 to 2.5:1uniform layer, acceptable gloss
    0.30 mm≥ 3.0:1capstock encapsulation at weld lines

Submerged and water-adjacent components in residential pool equipment, including filter valve bodies, pump volutes, and skimmer covers, expose ASA to chlorinated water, UV, and temperature cycles from 5°C to 60°C. The acrylic rubber phase in ASA provides better resistance to oxidative embrittlement in chlorinated water than butadiene-based ABS. However, continuous immersion is not automatically recommended for every G2980 part. The part design must avoid stagnant water traps and heavy wall transitions. Compliance with NSF/ANSI 61 for potable water contact and regional drinking water regulations must be certified for the exact molded article. The raw resin supplier datasheet alone is not sufficient.

Long-term performance data for G2980 under free chlorine concentrations above 3 mg/L at temperatures above 40°C should be requested before specifying it for pressure-bearing pool equipment. Thick-wall valve bodies with nominal wall thickness above 5 mm create process constraints. A 2500 kN hydraulic press with accumulator-assisted injection is used to maintain fill speed below 0.5 s for a 500 g shot. Packing pressure is set between 60 MPa and 80 MPa. Hold time is increased by 2 s per 1 mm of local wall thickness above 3 mm. Mold temperature is held at 55°C to 70°C to replicate gasket grooves. Above 80°C, cycle time exceeds 90 s and post-mold shrinkage continues for 24 h.

Water absorption of unfilled ASA is low, typically below 0.30% after 24 h immersion per ISO 62, but dimensional change at sealing faces is not negligible. Gasket compression sets are specified to accommodate 0.10 mm to 0.20 mm lateral shift. Hydrostatic burst testing per customer specifications is performed on the finished assembly, not the resin. Parts with regrind above 20% by weight may show reduced impact and increased visible contamination from degraded material. Regrind use must be validated per ISO 180 and ISO 1133 melt flow stability.

When Temperature Cycling Demands ASA over General-Purpose ABS in Outdoor Power Equipment

Engine shrouds, cutting deck covers, and control panel housings for outdoor power equipment are exposed to cyclic thermal loads from engine surfaces and cold-weather impact. SABIC GELOY™ ASA G2980 is considered when painted ABS shows gloss loss, chalking, or embrittlement after 12 months of outdoor exposure. The material is injection molded into parts with wall thickness from 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm. A mold temperature of 50°C to 70°C is used to stabilize the crystalline orientation near the gate. The melt temperature is maintained at 235°C to 255°C. Hot runner systems with externally heated manifolds are specified to reduce pressure drop; internal hot runner tips are held at 245°C to 255°C.

Cold impact performance is evaluated using ISO 180/1A at -30°C and ASTM D256 at -30°C. Accepted production lots typically show notched Izod values of 8 kJ/m² to 15 kJ/m², depending on pigment loading and regrind content. Multi-axial impact testing per ISO 6603-2 at -20°C is used for ductile-to-brittle screening. The glass transition region of ASA is broad; modulus rises below -30°C, so snap-fit arms must be designed with strain at the root below 1.2%.

Fuel and oil contact is a boundary condition. Continuous immersion in gasoline, especially blends containing ethanol above 10%, is not recommended. ASA is swollen by aromatic hydrocarbons, leading to stress crazing at bosses. Barrier design or material substitution to PA or PBT is required for fuel-adjacent zones. Alkaline cleaning agents with pH above 10 at elevated temperature may also attack the dispersion phase over repeated cycles. Published data for G2980 under continuous fuel exposure is limited.

Retention of Impact Strength After 3000 Hours of Xenon Arc Exposure in Cooling Tower Louvers

For evaporative cooling installations, cooling tower louvers, drift eliminator profiles, and exterior structural columns made from ASA are qualified through accelerated weathering that links UV dose to retained impact strength. The test used is ASTM G155 cycle 1 at 0.35 W/m² at 340 nm with a black panel temperature of 63°C. For parts with 3 mm nominal wall thickness, ISO 180/1A notched Izod at 23°C is measured at 0 h, 1000 h, 2000 h, and 3000 h. Retention of at least 80% of the original value is a common purchase specification. The flexural modulus is checked per ISO 178 at 2 mm/min to ensure the louver airfoil profile does not creep under high air velocity.

The chemical environment in evaporative cooling systems includes chlorinated water, bromide-based biocides, and alkaline scale inhibitors. A maximum free chlorine concentration of 5 mg/L in circulating water is a conservative boundary for ASA components. Higher concentrations can embrittle the surface after multiple seasons. Sodium bisulfite neutralization is required if chlorine shock dosing exceeds 10 mg/L. Legionella control programs that alternate between oxidising and non-oxidising biocides should be reviewed for compatibility with polymeric parts. Published data for G2980 under alternating biocide programs is limited.

Production of hollow louver cross-sections requires tooling with core pulls and gas injection to eliminate internal voids. A 1600 kN hydraulic press with gas-assist unit delivered a 1.2 mm gas channel along the airfoil trailing edge. Gas delay time was 0.8 s after injection start, and gas pressure was held at 25 MPa. Without gas assist, sink marks deeper than 0.05 mm formed on the visible aerodynamic surface. Resin drying before molding is identical: 80°C for 3 h to 4 h, with moisture below 0.05%.

For appliance housings installed near windows or in covered outdoor utility areas, UV stability and resistance to cleaning agents are key selection criteria. Air conditioner outdoor unit front grilles, heat pump side panels, and washing machine top covers are molded from G2980 with nominal wall thickness between 1.8 mm and 2.2 mm. High-speed injection at 150 mm/s to 200 mm/s is required to prevent melt freeze-off before the end of the flow path. Gate freeze time at 2 mm wall and 55°C mold temperature is approximately 4 s. Holding pressure is set at 50 MPa to 60 MPa for 3 s to 5 s after switchover at 95% fill volume.

Appliance exterior panel appearance is controlled with CIE L*a*b* measurements under D65/10°. Batch-to-batch colour variation from raw resin or masterbatch addition should remain within 0.5 ΔE* to avoid mismatched panels. Dark colours absorb more infrared radiation, raising surface temperatures above 70°C in direct sunlight. The heat deflection temperature of unfilled ASA, measured per ISO 75-2 method B at 0.45 MPa, is in the range of 80°C to 95°C for commercial grades. Designers must account for reduced modulus at these surface temperatures. The linear coefficient of thermal expansion per ISO 11359-2 is typically 80 µm/(m·°C) to 100 µm/(m·°C).

Chemical resistance to household cleaning agents is generally acceptable for dilute acids, alkalis, and alcohol-based surface sanitizers. Avoid combinations with ketone or ester solvents. Concentrated hydrochloric acid at room temperature may cause surface whitening. A minimum rinse after aggressive cleaner exposure is recommended. The use of copper-based colourants should be avoided because copper ions can accelerate UV degradation. Material replacements from ABS to ASA may be drop-in only after verifying that mold shrinkage differs by 0.1% or less.

Exterior Roof Fairings and Glazing Surrounds for Low-Speed Agricultural Vehicles

Tractor cab roof shells, side pillar covers, and headlamp surrounds are injection molded with SABIC GELOY™ ASA G2980 when the part must retain colour and impact after prolonged sun exposure and occasional contact with agrochemical sprays. These parts typically have wall thickness from 3 mm to 4 mm and require clamp force of 3000 kN to 4000 kN. Sequential valve gating is used to fill a roof shell with projected area above 0.6 m². The first gate opens at the part centre; subsequent gates open at 0.5 s intervals after the previous gate is cleared. Melt temperature is held at 250°C ± 5°C.

Impact requirements for glazing surrounds include ISO 6603-2 puncture impact at -20°C and a maximum cracks-to-failure criterion on a 3 mm plaque. Thermal expansion must be accommodated in joints because temperature on a cab roof can range from -40°C after overnight soak to 85°C under full solar load. With a CLTE of 80 µm/(m·°C) to 100 µm/(m·°C), a 1 m long roof fairing can expand by 8 mm to 10 mm across a 100°C temperature swing. Slot clearances and elastomeric gaskets are designed for this movement.

Agrochemical exposure includes dilute urea solutions, glyphosate formulations, and diesel spray drift. ASA is generally resistant to dilute aqueous salt solutions but not to aromatic solvents. Continuous contact with diesel fuel should be avoided. Cleaning of cab parts with high-pressure washers at 80°C and 12 MPa water pressure can erode painted ABS surfaces; unpainted ASA maintains surface integrity better, but nozzle distance should remain above 200 mm. Published data for G2980 under specific agrochemical mixtures is limited. Resin lot-to-lot melt flow should be within ±10% of the nominal value to maintain consistent fill in long flow tools.
