Application of SABIC GELOY™ ASA G1100

In a closed-loop desiccant dryer, unpainted exterior automotive cowl vents, mirror housings, B-pillar appliqués, and wheel arch spats are produced from GELOY™ ASA G1100 after residual moisture is reduced to below 0.03% as verified by ISO 15512:2019; typical drying conditions are 80 °C for 3–4 h with hopper air dew point held below −30 °C. The barrel temperature profile from rear to nozzle is commonly set at 210/220/230/240/250 °C, with nozzle and hot runner manifold temperatures kept between 250 °C and 260 °C because the resin must fill thin-wall ribs below 1.2 mm without premature solidification. Mould wall temperature is maintained at 50–70 °C, and injection velocity is profiled so that gate-land shear rate remains below 25,000 s−1 to avoid jetting, splay, and gloss reversal on grained and smooth surfaces. Mass pigmentation for black exterior parts uses carbon black masterbatch at 0.3–0.5 wt% dilution, while white and light-stable colours commonly require titanium dioxide at 2.0–4.0 phr; the masterbatch carrier should be SAN or ASA rather than polyethylene or polypropylene, because an incompatible carrier can migrate to knit lines and delaminate under thermal cycling. Mould shrinkage for unfilled ASA is typically 0.4–0.6% in the flow direction when measured on plaques prepared per ISO 294-3 and ISO 294-4, and parts should be conditioned at 23 °C and 50% RH for at least 48 h under ISO 291 before dimensional audit. Accelerated weathering for exterior trims is evaluated under ISO 4892-2:2013, cycle 1, with daylight filters, black-panel temperature at 65 °C, and irradiation at 0.51 W/m²/nm at 340 nm; when no OEM specification is available, a minimum exposure of 1,500 h with a ΔE*ab control limit established from the production colour standard is used. Because unpainted ASA parts replace painted ABS in these applications, lot-specific Delta E values, gloss retention, and impact retention after weathering should be established from production trials rather than extrapolated from generic datasheet figures.

Why Does a 0.2 mm Capstock Layer Fail Without Vacuum Calibration and Die-Land Temperature Control?

A 0.2 mm capstock layer produced from GELOY™ ASA G1100 for window profiles, deck board capping, and fence rail skins is coextruded over a rigid PVC substrate to provide ultraviolet screening, colour stability, and impact retention. Cap thickness below 0.10 mm produces inadequate UV shielding and insufficient surface toughness, while cap thickness above 0.30 mm increases the bending moment caused by the differing coefficient of linear thermal expansion between the ASA cap and PVC core; ASA typically exhibits values near 0.08–0.10 mm/m·K, whereas rigid PVC is lower, and the resulting interfacial shear can produce delamination after seasonal temperature cycling. The cap layer extruder is operated with front zones between 215 °C and 225 °C and die lips at 215–230 °C, while the PVC substrate melt is maintained between 180 °C and 195 °C to avoid autocatalytic dehydrochlorination at the interface. Melt pressure at the coextrusion feedblock is held below 20 MPa, and the two melts are combined after viscosity matching is confirmed by melt pressure differential rather than by a single datasheet figure; quantitative lot-specific melt-viscosity ratio between a high-flow ASA cap and a lower-melt-temperature PVC core is rarely published, so processors establish the working envelope through adapter pressure transducers and trial coextrusion. Vacuum calibration is run at −0.08 MPa with water temperature near 20 °C to lock the profile outside dimensions, because an unstabilised or uneven cap layer can tear when the molten web enters the calibrator at line speeds above 2.0 m/min. The coextruded profile is evaluated under ISO 4892-2:2013 for colour fastness and under EN 477:2011 or equivalent national profile impact methods for surface fracture after weathering; final product marking follows ISO 11469:2016 and REACH SVHC content below 0.1 wt% is confirmed through supplier declarations. Used as a capping layer over recycled PVC or foamed PVC core, GELOY™ ASA G1100 also isolates migration-prone core contaminants from the exposed surface, but only when the cap layer remains continuous and does not fold around the corners below the minimum thickness threshold.

For outdoor telecommunications junction boxes, irrigation controllers, and CCTV camera shells, unfilled GELOY™ ASA G1100 is specified when secondary painting or coating must be eliminated and the enclosure must survive multi-year exterior exposure without loss of impact resistance. Wall thickness is held between 2.0 mm and 3.5 mm for dimensional stability, with draft angles of at least 0.5° to reduce ejection stress whitening at bosses and snap-fit undercuts. The unfilled grade is not a flame-retardant formulation; a general-purpose ASA without FR modification typically shows a UL 94 HB classification at 1.5 mm, and designers must not assume V-0 or 5VA compliance for electrical equipment where enclosure flammability is governed by IEC 62368-1 or equivalent product safety standards. Outdoor suitability is handled through UL 746C qualification, where UV and water exposure categories must be verified for the final colour, thickness, and part geometry; dark grey and black formulations containing stabilised carbon black are more likely to meet outdoor f1 requirements than light pastel colours. For IP65 or IP66 gasket sealing, weld lines must not cross sealing surfaces, and gate positions are relocated to flange edges or post-consumer non-sealing locations; mould surface roughness is controlled to VDI 18–24, and flat sealing regions are inspected after moulding for sink depth below 0.01 mm by surface profilometry according to ISO 4287:1997. Dimensional audits are performed at 23 °C and 50% RH after 48 h conditioning per ISO 291, because moisture and orientation relaxation alter the 0.4–0.6% mould shrinkage measured under ISO 294-4. The resin is conveyed and dried exactly as for thin-wall automotive parts, but the longer filling path in deep junction boxes requires sequential valve gating or multiple submarine gates to avoid pressure spikes above 120 MPa hydraulic pressure. Final weathering acceptance is most commonly anchored to ISO 4892-2:2013 and ASTM G155:2021, with the detail that published data for this specific configuration is limited; each enclosure colour and gasket interface should be validated on production-representative mouldings.

UL 746C-Driven Wall Thickness Decisions in Outdoor HVAC Discharge Louvres

Because ASA occupies a position between impact-modified polystyrene and PC/ABS in terms of stiffness, toughness, and outdoor colour retention, air-conditioning condensing-unit discharge louvres and inspection covers are moulded from GELOY™ ASA G1100 where the part must survive direct sun, rainwater, and heat from the condensing coil. The heat deflection temperature of unfilled ASA under 1.8 MPa per ISO 75-2:2013 is used as a comparative upper-use guide rather than a continuous service rating; dark-coloured louvres can reach surface temperatures between 65 °C and 80 °C in full sun, so thin sections below 2.0 mm are avoided unless structural ribs compensate for stiffness loss. Louver blades are maintained at a minimum thickness of 2.0 mm, with sidewalls between 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm; polish is specified at SPI A2 or Ra 0.05 µm to achieve the high-gloss surface that would otherwise require painting. Sequential valve gating is preferred over edge gate injection because the filling pattern must push melt across multiple louver slots without trapping gas at the trailing edges; injection pressure is controlled between 70 MPa and 100 MPa, and holding pressure is decayed after gate freeze to prevent overpacking that creates sink opposite bosses. For outdoor HVAC components, UL 746C tests for UV and water immersion or exposure are used to qualify the final part with the exact pigment loading and regrind content; a colour reset or an increase from 0% to 20% regrind may shift the f1 rating and must be revalidated. Impact acceptance after UV ageing is evaluated by ISO 180:2019 notched Izod at 23 °C, and any reduction after 1,000 h xenon arc exposure greater than the production control range triggers a review of pigment, stabiliser, or moulded-in stress. The resin is dried to below 0.03% moisture per ISO 15512:2019, and hot-runner residence time at 255 °C is kept below 10 min to avoid yellowing and loss of gloss in light grey or white parts.

When Heavy-Gauge Thermoformed Covers Replace Painted Steel in Marine and Agricultural Equipment

Sheet manufacturers running GELOY™ ASA G1100 for heavy-gauge thermoformed covers use a single-screw extruder with an L/D between 30:1 and 36:1, a barrier screw, and a melt temperature profile from 210 °C to 240 °C; sheet thickness is typically 2.0–5.0 mm for tractor hood sections, marine console shrouds, and agricultural access covers. The sheet is calendered through a three-roll stack with top roll at 80 °C, middle roll at 90 °C, and bottom roll at 60 °C; lacking closed-loop gauge control, the line can produce die lines and thickness variation that replicate as visual defects after drawdown. Sheet must be dried to below 0.03% residual moisture before extrusion because water vapour forms pinholes and silver streaks at sheet surface temperatures above 150 °C. Vacuum forming or twin-sheet thermoforming is performed at sheet surface temperatures between 165 °C and 185 °C with mould temperature held at 45–60 °C; draw ratios beyond 1:1 width-to-depth require plug assist to keep corner thinning above 50% of nominal wall after forming. The replacement of painted steel or painted ABS in marine and agricultural equipment eliminates filiform corrosion at cut edges and reduces mass relative to steel at approximately 7.85 g/cm³; unfilled ASA sheet density is in the range 1.06–1.08 g/cm³ when measured under ISO 1183-1:2019. Outdoor performance is assessed by ISO 4892-2:2013 for weathering and by impact tests on formed parts according to ISO 6603-2:2000 for multiaxial instrumented puncture where stone impact is a field risk. Because GELOY™ ASA G1100 is not a polycarbonate or polyamide, it does not provide the same upper-temperature performance in engine-compartment-adjacent covers; continuous exposure to exhaust or hot engine surfaces above the HDT-derived application limit requires a different resin or additional shielding. Surface embossing is commonly used to hide weathering scuffs, and the embossed sheet is evaluated for gloss retention after cleansing with marine or agricultural cleaners, but published data for chemical exposure with this specific configuration is limited and should be generated on formed production blanks rather than flat laboratory plaques.

After pre-drying to 0.03% residual moisture per ISO 15512:2019, profile extrusion of spa equipment skirts, pool filter lids, and outdoor furniture straps uses GELOY™ ASA G1100 at melt temperatures of 220–245 °C with die temperatures near 230 °C and calibration water at 25 °C. Vacuum calibration is maintained at −0.05 MPa to −0.08 MPa, and the die land length is set at 10–15 times the wall thickness to reduce die swell and preserve the dimensional control required by snap-fit assembly features. Water absorption of unfilled ASA after 24 h immersion under ISO 62:2008 is below 0.5%, which compares favourably with the substantially higher equilibrium moisture uptake of polyamide 6 in humid outdoor spa environments and reduces the dimensional and mechanical drift caused by moisture plasticisation. The resin is not recommended for continuous immersion in hot chlorinated or brominated water at high sanitizer concentrations; gasket contact with concentrated chlorine or ozone injection points should be isolated, and chemical resistance of the final profile should be tested under ISO 175:2010 with the actual disinfectant concentration and temperature. Colour retention of spa cabinets and pool equipment is evaluated under ISO 4892-2:2013, with dark colours pigmented by stabilised carbon black and light colours by light-stable inorganic pigment packages; the use of ultraviolet absorbers and hindered amine light stabilisers in the compound is not a substitute for through-thickness pigment screening when wall thickness falls below 1.5 mm. Profile puller speed is matched to melt output through an ultrasonic wall-thickness gauge with tolerance set at ±0.05 mm, and a post-extrusion annealing tunnel at 80 °C for 15 min is sometimes used to relax orientation and reduce warpage in asymmetric profile cross-sections. For products sold into the European Union, REACH SVHC concentration below 0.1 wt% and RoHS restricted substance compliance are confirmed through raw-material supplier documentation, while material marking follows ISO 11469:2016 and the relevant product-specific standards for pool and spa equipment govern final mechanical and electrical safety validation.
