Application of SABIC GELOY™ ASA FR700F
For outdoor electrical enclosures and distribution equipment covers, SABIC GELOY™ ASA FR700F is handled as a pre-dried, unreinforced flame-retardant ASA resin on standard single-flight reciprocating-screw injection machines. A desiccant dryer set at 80°C with a dew point no higher than -30°C and a residence time of 4 h reduces surface moisture to below 0.05 wt%, measured by gravimetric moisture analysis before each shift. At 240°C nozzle setpoint and 70°C mould temperature, the melt is delivered through direct sprue gates into multi-insert enclosure bodies with wall stocks from 2.0 mm to 3.5 mm. The unfilled system exhibits mould shrinkage of 0.6% to 0.8% when measured after 48 h according to ISO 294-4; this is lower in orbital direction than the 1.2% to 1.5% range typical of 30% glass-filled PBT grades, so corner bosses with wall ratios near 0.4 relative to nominal wall thickness can be cored without unacceptable sink. Moulders limit regrind to 15 wt% in dark RAL 7016 utility meter covers because higher regrind fractions shift the UL 94 V-0 result after 168 h at 70°C thermal ageing. The finished parts are used in ANSI C12.10 and IEC 62052-31 single-phase and three-phase utility meter housings, with snap-fit cover latches and moulded-in sealing grooves. Compliance with UL 746C f1 outdoor weathering is required before the tool is released, and the V-0 rating applies only at the thickness recorded on the UL yellow card. The sealing groove area is particularly sensitive to mould-temperature uniformity. When a 12-zone water system holds manifold outlet temperature at 65°C instead of 70°C, the seal surface can develop visible flow lines due to premature solidification of the flame-retardant package at the end of fill. Production machines with 1800 kN clamp force and 50 mm general-purpose screws at L/D 20:1 are sufficient for shot sizes up to 600 g, but screw recovery time must not exceed 8 s if ambering is to be avoided. Vent depths are held at 0.030 mm on the parting line and 0.040 mm on ejector pins; blocked vents from flame-retardant additive plate-out appear first as diesel marks near the latch bosses. No external mould-release spray is permitted because solvent carriers can attack the ASA surface, reduce the UL 746C f1 retention, and create volatile residues in the sealing area.

What Causes Gate Blush on Thin Ribs in EV Charging Pistol Housings?

Thin ribs below 1.0 mm in EV charging pistol outer shells display gate blush when the valve-gate tip is held at the same setpoint as the nozzle. The grade, when filled through a single sub-gate of 0.8 mm diameter into a 2.2 mm nominal wall shell, develops a local oriented skin layer that visually marks the outer surface at the gate land. Plant trials on a 2400 kN hydraulic machine with an 8-drop hot runner, shot size 450 g, and cycle time 52 s show that reducing hot runner manifold temperature from 255°C to 240°C and increasing injection velocity from 80 mm/s to 120 mm/s moves the blush boundary out of the visible A-surface. The grade is not electroplated, but flame-retardant pigment packages can generate a visible hazing difference when the surface temperature exceeds 70°C at ejection.Material ratio for this segment is 90 wt% virgin resin to 10 wt% closed-loop regrind from rejected shells and cold-runner tails, with regrind dried separately at 80°C for 6 h. Colour masterbatch is an ASA-based concentrate added at 2 wt% for signal grey; a polyolefin carrier is excluded because it reduces the heat deflection temperature under load by more than 3°C at 1.82 MPa when tested according to ISO 75-2/Bf. Terminal products include Mode 3 Type 2 charging pistol housings and control box covers tested to UL 2594, IEC 61851-1, and UL 94 V-0 at the yellow-card thickness. The moulded shell must retain latch retention and impact after 1000 h of 85°C/85% RH damp-heat per IEC 62196-1 before the connector is approved.

PV Inverter Enclosure Thermal Cycling and Terminal Boss Integrity

Large-format PV inverter enclosures using SABIC GELOY™ ASA FR700F are produced on two-platen injection machines of 12,000 kN clamp force with shot capacity above 2.5 kg. The melt temperature is kept at 240°C to 250°C measured at the nozzle, and mould temperature is set at 75°C to reduce frozen-in stress in the 600 mm flow length from a sequential valve gate system. The material ratio is 80 wt% virgin FR700F to 15 wt% in-house regrind and 5 wt% ASA-based dark grey masterbatch; the masterbatch let-down is pre-dried with the natural resin to maintain 0.05 wt% moisture. Terminal bosses for M6 cable gland plates are moulded as hollow cored structures with wall thickness 2.5 mm and are not post-tapped; self-tapping screws are driven at 0.8 N·m to 1.2 N·m. Thermal cycling from -40°C to 90°C for 200 cycles per IEC 60068-2-14 reveals no boss cracking when the gate freeze time is held above 6 s and hold pressure is maintained at 60 MPa.The part is evaluated for IP65 water-jet protection using a nozzle flow of 12.5 L/min at 100 kPa for 3 min per IEC 60529 and for impact at -40°C using IEC 60068-2-75 spring hammer 0.5 J. The unfilled ASA grade has lower modulus than glass-filled PBT, so mounting brackets must not be designed as ribbed beams above 3:1 height-to-width ratio; otherwise creep under annual rooftop loading becomes visible as permanent set after 90 days at 60°C. Published data for specific PV enclosure load cases is limited for this grade; part validation therefore requires physical load tests on the final tool. The terminal product is a residential or commercial string inverter enclosure installed outside without a secondary canopy.

When a Hot Runner Manifold Exceeds 260°C During Colour Change

Colour change on lines producing HVAC outdoor condenser covers can push a hot runner manifold above 260°C if the purge sequence raises all zones to match the new colour concentrate. At this temperature, the flame-retardant package in GELOY™ ASA FR700F is driven into thermal decomposition at the manifold wall layer. The resin then transfers degraded, carbonized material into the next 20 to 30 shots, creating black specks and vent clogging. A 2.5 kg acrylic-based purge compound run at 230°C through a 2-drop valve-gate system removes the bulk colour but does not clear dead corners at the gate stems; teardown of the manifold after 2000 shots shows hard deposits at the 0.030 mm gate land. The exact onset temperature for accelerated decomposition is grade-specific; published data for the complete kinetic profile is limited, but production records indicate that visible degradation products emerge after sustained exposure above 260°C. The corrective procedure is to lower manifold setpoint to 245°C and to keep the barrel rear zone at 210°C, while increasing back pressure to 0.7 MPa and screw speed to 80 rpm for purging. This reduces thermal history and prevents caramelized ASA residue. For this part, the material ratio is 100 wt% virgin resin with 2 wt% beige ASA-based concentrate, and no regrind is used in the visible cover surface because white flecks generated by reground hot-runner drool reduce appearance consistency. The HVAC cover is tested to UL 94 V-0 at 2.0 mm and UL 746C f1, and it must survive 300 h salt-spray exposure per ISO 9227 without loss of impact. The process limit is maintained by placing a melt-temperature limit of 250°C at the nozzle and a hot runner thermocouple alarm at 255°C; if the alarm is bypassed, the shot-to-shot variation in peak injection pressure rises above 12 bar and the oven-aged flammability performance becomes unreportable. The terminal product is a roof-mounted condensing unit electrical enclosure cover with moulded-in louvres and a 1.5 mm-deep gasket channel.

On 2200 kN hydraulic injection machines producing pole-mounted disconnect switch bases, the polypropylene-based dust caps and ASA bases are arranged as two-shot assemblies with a pre-moulded insert. The ASA base is gated through a fan gate of 6.0 mm width and 0.8 mm land length to prevent jetting across the 180 mm flat mounting flange. The process uses 15 wt% regrind from the same base tool, dried to 0.05 wt% moisture. The switch base must meet UL 98 and UL 508A enclosure performance at outdoor ambient; the material is checked for UL 94 V-0 after 7 days at 70°C thermal ageing and for UL 746C f1 colour shift after 3000 h xenon arc exposure per ASTM G155-13. The terminal product is a lockable disconnect switch base with integrally moulded arc barriers and M5 terminal block recesses. Injection speed is profiled at 30 mm/s for the first 5 mm of fill and 90 mm/s through the gate land to maintain a single full weld line below the arc barriers.Because the base is installed on aluminium poles, the differential thermal expansion between ASA and aluminium is 6.0×10⁻⁵ K⁻¹ versus 2.3×10⁻⁵ K⁻¹; this imposes a design clearance of 0.5 mm per 100 mm of interface length to prevent solar heating from buckling the base between -30°C and 70°C. Mould shrinkage is measured at 0.6% to 0.8% after 48 h and is used to compensate the tool. No secondary annealing is performed; the parts are packed only after 12 h at 23°C to prevent packaging deformation.

At 95°C Continual Service Temperature, Unreinforced ASA Exhibits Load-Dependent Distortion Below Its HDT

Electrical terminal block housings moulded in GELOY™ ASA FR700F are rated for continuous service 95°C only when mechanical loading is below 0.5 MPa bearing stress. Under a screw-tightening clamp force converted to 1.2 MPa local pressure under the terminal screw boss, the unfilled ASA exhibits small but permanent deformation after 1000 h at 95°C because the load is acting near the heat deflection temperature range. The solution is not to switch to a higher-melting resin but to enlarge the bearing face to 8.0 mm diameter and to reduce assembly torque to 0.4 N·m. Terminal block bases are processed with a melt temperature of 235°C and a mould temperature of 65°C, using a two-cavity cold-runner tool with pin-point gates of 0.6 mm diameter and 0.8 mm land length. Regrind is held at 10 wt% because the pin holes must maintain dimensional stability for the insert terminals after thermal cycling.Electrical compliance is governed by IEC 60664-1, IEC 60947-7-1, and UL 94 V-0 at the yellow-card thickness. For creepage distances over 8.0 mm, the comparative tracking index must be verified from the UL yellow card; design engineers should not assume CTI above 400 V for FR ASA in wet polluted environments. Damp-heat ageing at 85°C/85% RH for 168 h can reduce pin retention by 5% to 10% if the moulded hole is not vented; therefore vent pins are placed at 0.020 mm clearance and polished to SPI A-2. Terminal products include DIN-rail terminal block housings, relay bases, and current transformer cases.
