Application of SABIC GELOY™ ASA EXGY0022

When SABIC GELOY™ ASA EXGY0022 is used as a weatherable capstock on rigid PVC window profiles, the line is configured as a two-extruder co-extrusion process rather than a dry-blended alloy. The capstock formulation is compounded at 100 phr virgin ASA EXGY0022, 0.5–2.0 phr acrylic copolymer processing aid, 4–8 phr TiO₂-based white concentrate, and 0.3–1.0 phr HALS/UV absorber masterbatch; capstock regrind is restricted to 10–15 wt% of the capstock feed because higher ratios increase the risk of die-lip plate-out and micro-gel particles on the exposed surface. The PVC substrate is processed at 185–200 °C melt temperature, while the ASA capstock stream is held at 230–250 °C; the feedblock or co-extrusion die block is maintained at 215–230 °C to allow fusion at the melt interface without approaching the HCl-elimination threshold of the PVC layer. Drying of ASA EXGY0022 is mandatory at 80 °C for 4 h with a desiccant dryer and a dew point no higher than -30 °C; residual moisture above 0.05% produces splay and microscopic surface defects that can be misread as weathering failure. The finished profile is evaluated under EN 12608-1 for dimensional tolerance and impact strength of unplasticized PVC profiles, and weathering of the capstock surface is assessed by ISO 4892-2 Xenon arc exposure for 2000 h, followed by grey-scale evaluation to ISO 105-A02. End products include casement and sash outer profiles, door outer frames, glazing beads, and co-extruded mullion covers.

The primary process conflict on production-scale counter-rotating PVC lines with L/D 36:1 main extruders and a satellite extruder with L/D 30:1 is the narrow die-temperature window. If the feedblock wall drops below 210 °C, the ASA layer does not wet the PVC surface, producing peel failure at the capstock-substrate interface; if the wall remains above 230 °C for more than 20 min, the PVC skin yellows and surface gloss drops below the accepted range. The capstock layer thickness is controlled at 0.15–0.25 mm by feedblock insert geometry; substitution of TiO₂ concentrate batches with different carrier resins can shift layer distribution by ±0.03 mm across the profile face, visible as shade streaking after 18 months outdoors. Calibrators are operated with water at 16–22 °C; lower calibration temperatures freeze the capstock too quickly and increase residual stress around co-extruded corners, while higher temperatures reduce gasket-fit accuracy. The ASA capstock should be paired with PVC substrate stabilizers that do not contain lead or cadmium to preserve Directive 2011/65/EU compliance of the finished profile; the capstock alone cannot offset substrate stabilizer migration.

How Does Capstock Thickness Control Impact Resistance and Colour Retention in Horizontal Exterior Cladding?

Horizontal siding and trim profiles produced with ASA EXGY0022 differ from window lineal because the melt is distributed across wider cross-sections with multiple embossed surfaces, requiring lower capstock viscosity and different addition-ratio boundaries. The substrate is a rigid or cellular PVC profile at 1.0–1.3 mm wall thickness, with the ASA capstock layer set at 0.12–0.20 mm and maintained within ±0.02 mm by a feedblock die block. The capstock formulation is 100 phr ASA EXGY0022, 2–6 phr iron-oxide or mixed-metal oxide pigment masterbatch, 0.4–1.0 phr hindered amine light stabilizer, and 0.3–0.8 phr ester-type processing lubricant; dark brown and black shades use the upper pigment loading because insufficient capstock opacity over white PVC creates visible edge wear at cut ends. Compliance is documented to ASTM D3679 for rigid vinyl siding dimensional uniformity, impact resistance, and heat-shrinkage limits, with outdoor colour retention evaluated by ISO 4892-2 Xenon arc exposure and ASTM G154 fluorescent UV screening for batch release. Downstream processing passes the extrudate through a high-polish embossing station; emboss roll temperature is held at 65–85 °C and line speed is set between 2–5 m/min depending on emboss depth and profile width. End product types include clapboard and Dutch-lap siding, fascia and soffit boards, decorative shutters, and exterior trim boards with integrated nail slots.

Embossing depth above 80 µm creates micro-cracks in the capstock if the emboss roll temperature is below 65 °C; conversely, gloss levels rise if the roll is above 85 °C and the ASA skin is not quenched within the first 2 s of contact. Capstock regrind from edge trim is incorporated at 10–15 wt% only when ground material is free of PVC fines, because mixed polymer fines reduce interlayer fusion under ASTM D3679 impact testing.

For double-walled outdoor sanitary panels and spa components, heavy-gauge sheet produced from SABIC GELOY™ ASA EXGY0022 is converted by twin-sheet thermoforming; the sheet is extruded at 4.0–8.0 mm thickness and the forming step fuses two sheets along a perimeter pinch line to create a load-bearing hollow structure. The sheet formulation uses 100 phr ASA EXGY0022, 5–8 phr TiO₂ concentrate for light-coloured surfaces or 1–2 phr carbon black concentrate for dark granite finishes, 2–5 phr colour masterbatch, and 0.4–1.0 phr UV absorber package. Pellet drying precedes extrusion at 80 °C for 4 h to a moisture content below 0.05%; trapped moisture at the sheet core weakens the twin-sheet seam and reduces part-specific load capacity. The sheet extrusion line employs a single-screw extruder with L/D 32:1 barrier screw, melt temperature 230–245 °C, and a three-roll polishing stack at 75–90 °C to control caliper and surface gloss. Twin-sheet forming is performed at sheet-surface temperatures of 160–190 °C; the clamped pinch line must reach 150–170 °C because incomplete seam fusion below 150 °C creates v-notch porosity detectable by cross-section microscopy. Compliance for spa shells is evaluated under NSF/ANSI 50 for pool and spa equipment, while shower pans and sanitary panels are assessed under ANSI Z124.1 for plastic plumbing fixtures; the supplied resin is documented against Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II restricted substances. Published data for this specific grade under direct food-contact migration protocols is limited; therefore the sheet is specified for non-food water-contact and industrial sanitary applications unless converter-specific testing is completed. End product types include spa shells, outdoor shower pans, chemical containment trays, and marine head modules.

When Black ASA Exterior Profiles Must Retain Low Gloss Under Automotive Weathering Protocols

Black and dark-grey ASA EXGY0022 extrudates on automotive precision profile lines are processed where surface gloss and dimensional stability are monitored more tightly than in building products. The formulation is 100 phr ASA EXGY0022, 1.5–3.0 phr carbon black masterbatch selected for low moisture contribution, 0.4–1.0 phr hindered amine light stabilizer, and 0.2–0.6 phr high-molecular-weight silicone lubricant. Compliance is assessed under FMVSS 302 for burn-rate behaviour and SAE J2527 Xenon arc weathering, with post-exposure colour change measured under ISO 7724-3. The downstream process is profile extrusion at 230–250 °C through vacuum calibrators with water at 16–20 °C, followed by infrared or hot-plate bending at 150–170 °C for curved components; the bending station is maintained within this narrow window because lower temperatures lead to stress whitening and higher temperatures degrade the low-gloss surface. End product types include roof-ditch cover profiles, rocker-panel appliques, wheel-arch trim, and beltline outer covers.

Calibration water below 16 °C increases residual stress in thick sections, which later manifests as stress whitening when the profile is notched or clipped during assembly; water above 20 °C slows the surface freeze and reduces buckle resistance in curved sections. Continuous service above 85 °C is not recommended for this grade because the acrylic ester phase softens and gloss retention becomes difficult to control.

Telecom Enclosure Thermoforming Using Unfilled Weatherable ASA Sheet

Where telecom enclosures must retain Charpy notched impact at 0 °C under ISO 179-1, SABIC GELOY™ ASA EXGY0022 sheet is specified for UV resistance, part dimensional stability, and low-temperature ductility of the formed housing. The sheet formulation is 100 phr ASA EXGY0022, 2–4 phr UV-stabilized colour masterbatch, and 20–30 wt% closed-loop regrind; regrind above 30 wt% is excluded from exterior surfaces because repeated heat history reduces Charpy notched impact evaluated under ISO 179-1 at 0 °C. Colour retention for exterior surfaces is screened by ISO 4892-2 Xenon arc exposure for 2000 h. Compliance is directed at the fabricated enclosure rather than the polymer alone: the resin carries UL 94 HB classification at the grade-specific Yellow Card minimum thickness, the finished housing is evaluated to NEMA 250 Type 3R for rain resistance and outdoor enclosure integrity, and the supplied resin is documented against REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 SVHC restrictions. Downstream production includes sheet extrusion at 3.0–6.0 mm thickness, drape or plug-assist thermoforming at 160–185 °C, CNC trimming, and adhesive bonding of formed shells to structural bases. Sheet below 3.0 mm is not preferred for pedestal covers because thermoformed corner stiffness becomes difficult to maintain in formed corners; sheet above 6.0 mm increases cycle time without proportional mechanical benefit in unsupported spans. End product types include telecommunications pedestal covers, solar inverter covers, electric-vehicle charging station enclosures, and outdoor instrumentation cabinets.
