Application of SABIC GELOY™ ASA CR7650

In high-volume injection moulding of black exterior cowl vent grilles for light-truck and SUV platforms, GELOY™ ASA CR7650 is selected when the part must survive 2500 h of accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2:2013 while retaining a uniform low-gloss black surface without painting. Incoming resin lots are verified by melt volume rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220°C/10 kg; the value is used as a control reference, and barrel residence time is adjusted when the MVR drifts more than ±15% from the approved lot baseline. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer with a dew point no higher than -35°C at 80°C for 3–4 h is mandatory before the melt enters a 2500 kN hydraulic clamp injection machine; residual moisture above 0.03% produces splay at the trailing edge of the lattice ribs and reduces weld-line strength at the centre of the grille. The barrel profile is set at 40°C throat, 225°C rear, 235°C centre, 240°C front, and 245°C nozzle, with a mould temperature of 55–65°C for the production tool. A two-stage velocity profile transfers from 45 mm/s during sprue and runner filling to 28–32 mm/s in the lattice section, preventing gas entrapment at the rib roots and allowing the flow front to reach the distal shutline before gate freeze. Sequential valve-gated drops at 4 positions along the lower shutline move the weld line below the visible surface; if the valve-gate timings are offset by more than 0.25 s, visible weld lines appear in the high-gloss black surface and the parts are rejected for appearance under ASTM D2244-23 after initial injection.

For batch formulation, a carbon black masterbatch is diluted into GELOY™ ASA CR7650 at 1.2–1.8 wt%; laboratory batches evaluated on a 28 mm twin-screw extruder with an L/D of 36:1 show that loadings above 2.0 wt% reduce notched impact retention after 4000 h of xenon-arc exposure under SAE J2527 by more than 35% relative to unpigmented ASA. The filled and packed part is held at 50–60 MPa pack pressure for 6–8 s, followed by a cooling time of 18–22 s; shorter cooling times cause sink marks of 0.4–0.6 mm at the boss fastening points on the mirror-housing version of the tool. Melt residence time is limited to 10 min maximum in the barrel because longer exposure at 245°C shifts the colour of unpigmented regrind toward yellow and increases the ΔE of the finished black part. Terminal components include cowl vent grilles, mirror housings, and beltline trim. Compliance documentation for these exterior parts typically references SAE J2527 for xenon-arc weathering, ISO 4892-2:2013 for laboratory exposure, ASTM D638-22 for tensile properties, and ASTM D256-23 for Izod impact.

What Limits IP65 Seal Retention in Coastal Telecommunications Housings?

Outdoor telecommunication enclosures produced from GELOY™ ASA CR7650 are tested for UV resistance under UL 746C F1 conditions and for enclosure integrity under IEC 60529:2013 IP65; the F1 outdoor suitability rating requires retention of mechanical and electrical properties after 5000 h of UV exposure and 7 days of water exposure. In coastal installations, the sealing lip is molded as a continuous 2.2 mm rib around the door opening, and the dimensional tolerance is held at ±0.08 mm to allow a closed-cell EPDM gasket to compress to 35% strain without experiencing compression set. On a 1200 kN electric injection machine, the ASA melt is processed with a five-zone barrel profile from 220°C in the feed zone to 235°C at the nozzle, with a mould temperature of 50–60°C; the hot-runner manifold is maintained at 238–242°C. If the nozzle temperature exceeds 250°C, the molded-in brass inserts show stress cracks around the threads within 48 h after insertion because thermal degradation of the ASA acrylic ester segments shortens the polymer chains and lowers environmental stress-cracking resistance to 0.5% sodium chloride solution.

The enclosure formulation avoids heavy-metal pigments and brominated flame retardants to comply with RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH SVHC restrictions; pigmentation is limited to light grey and RAL 7035 grey masterbatch at 2.0–2.5 wt%. Processing experience on a 48-cavity hot-runner tool shows that increasing the hold pressure from 45 MPa to 60 MPa reduces seal-lip warpage from 0.22 mm to 0.09 mm but increases frozen-in gate stress near the tunnel gate; therefore, the process window is defined by 58–62 MPa hold pressure and 7–8 s hold time. Finished enclosures are subjected to ASTM D638-22 tensile tests on specimens cut from the side walls, ASTM D256-23 Izod impact tests at -30°C, and IEC 60529:2013 water-jet acceptance. The terminal parts are outdoor telecommunication cabinets, antenna shroud covers, and distribution boxes where unpainted weather resistance and dimensional stability after thermal cycling are required.

Thermal Expansion Mismatch in Coextruded Window Lineals

When GELOY™ ASA CR7650 is used as the weatherable cap layer over a rigid PVC substrate in window lineal profiles, the difference in linear coefficient of thermal expansion—approximately 8.5×10⁻⁵ K⁻¹ for ASA-type capstock and 5.0–6.0×10⁻⁵ K⁻¹ for rigid PVC—defines the minimum cap-layer thickness as 0.25 mm; below that thickness, interfacial shear stress during 50 thermal cycles from -20°C to 60°C causes delamination at the coextrusion boundary. The capstock is dried to 0.02% moisture in a desiccant dryer at 80°C before entering a 38 mm single-screw extruder with a 30:1 L/D barrier screw. Extruder zone temperatures range from 195°C in the feed zone to 220°C at the adapter, with the coextrusion die held at 222°C; calibration water is maintained at 16–18°C to set the high-gloss surface without generating microcrazing at the PVC-ASA interface. Puller speed is matched to profilometer readings so that the profile exits the calibrator at 3.2–3.6 m/min for a 0.35 mm cap layer in a 70 mm main profile width.

Formulation for dark-colour lineals uses 3.0–4.5 phr of lightfast inorganic pigments and 0.3–0.6 phr of a high-molecular-weight hindered amine stabilizer; organic reds and oranges are excluded unless the finished profile is tested to ASTM D2244-23 after 8000 h of ISO 4892-3 exposure and the ΔE remains below 3.0. Terminal products are window and door lineals, fascia profiles, and garage door edge caps. The composite profile is checked for colour retention under EN 12608 and for impact resistance under ISO 180:2019; capstock adhesion is further monitored after thermal cycling through the production cell, with no delamination permitted at the 0.25 mm minimum cap thickness. Because rigid PVC stabilizer packages containing lead-based compounds are incompatible with the ASA capstock and can migrate into the interface, only calcium-zinc or organic stabilizer systems are qualified for coextrusion with ASA CR7650.

Outdoor-rated HVAC condenser louvres and fan shrouds produced from GELOY™ ASA CR7650 operate within a thermal cycle spanning -30°C winter shutdown and 75°C continuous compressor-side exposure; the most common production-scale defect is louvre-tip warpage caused by differential shrinkage between the 4.0 mm root and the 1.8 mm tip. On a 1300 kN toggle-clamp injection machine, the velocity-to-pressure transfer is set at 96–98% of cavity volume, and the pack pressure is held at 50 MPa for 6.5 s, followed by 20 MPa holding pressure for 10 s; this dual-pressure profile counteracts the bending moment that otherwise lifts the louvre tips by 0.3–0.5 mm after 24 h of free cooling. Drying is maintained at 80°C for 3 h, and the resin is exposed to ambient air for no more than 15 min before entering the feed throat when plant relative humidity exceeds 60%; above that threshold, moisture sorption creates surface splay on the textured louvre face. The tool is a two-plate cold-runner design with flash-type gates at the rear flange; hot-runner systems are avoided because colour consistency of the weathered grey material shifts by 0.8 ΔE when melt residence time in the manifold exceeds 9 min.

The HVAC formulation uses a grey masterbatch at 2.0 wt% with lightfastness testing under ASTM G155 Cycle 1 for 3000 h; tensile retention must remain above 80% of the original ASTM D638-22 yield stress. Impact tests at -20°C are performed on finished fan shrouds using ISO 179-1:2020 Charpy specimens cut from the hub area; a failure rate above 1 per 200 parts triggers an increase in melt temperature from 235°C to 240°C and a mould temperature adjustment of +5°C. Amine-based antistatic additives are not introduced into this formulation because they accelerate yellowing during xenon-arc ageing and reduce the outdoor F1 margin. Terminal articles are condenser louvre panels, fan shrouds, and top covers for residential and light-commercial condensing units. The moulded components are not painted, eliminating volatile organic compound emissions from the finishing line, and they are compliant with RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC restrictions as supplied.

When ASA CR7650 Replaces Painted ABS in Marine Hatch Covers

For marine hatch covers and RV exterior corner caps, the direct substitution of paintable ABS with GELOY™ ASA CR7650 removes the secondary adhesion promoter and two-component polyurethane coating line, but it shifts the surface finish requirement into the moulding process because the high-gloss cap must not show flow marks or colour shifts after 2000 h of ISO 4892-3 exposure. A 1400 kN hydraulic injection machine fitted with a 32 mm three-zone screw processes the material at 230–245°C melt temperature and 60°C mould temperature; polished tool surfaces of N1–N2 SPI finish are required to match the removed paint gloss. Gate design for a hatch cover measuring 420 mm × 310 mm uses a single direct sprue gate into a thickened 3.0 mm boss pad to prevent hesitation lines; if the pad thickness is reduced below 2.5 mm, the flow front reverses and leaves a dull halo around the gate. The pack stage uses 35 MPa for 5 s, then 15 MPa for 8 s; holding longer than 8 s at 35 MPa causes gate blush and increases the reject rate by approximately 12% due to visible stress whitening in the translucent white ASA matrix.

Formulation for marine white components uses titanium dioxide masterbatch at 3.5–5.0 phr; the exact loading is adjusted so that the linear mould shrinkage remains within 0.5–0.7%, because higher TiO₂ loadings increase shrinkage variation and make the snap-fit engagement dimensions unstable. Salt-spray acceptance is conducted under ISO 9227:2022 for 720 h; the parts must show no blistering, no gloss loss greater than 10 units at 60° gloss, and no tensile yield retention below 85% of the original value. Assemblers insert stainless-steel captive hardware using ultrasonic insertion; the hole bosses are designed with a wall thickness of 2.0 mm and a diameter tolerance of ±0.05 mm because ASA CR7650 does not flow around steel inserts as easily as unfilled ABS at the same melt temperature. Terminal components include swim-platform hatch covers, bow cleat trim, shore-power inlet covers, and RV vent hoods.

Impeller Housing Stress Cracking and Chlorinated Water Exposure

Spa pump impeller housings and irrigation valve bodies moulded from GELOY™ ASA CR7650 are exposed to chlorinated water at 2–5 ppm free chlorine and service temperatures of 20–40°C; published data for continuous immersion beyond 50°C and 5 ppm free chlorine in this specific ASA formulation is limited, so long-term qualification requires application-specific ISO 22088-3 constant-strain environmental stress-cracking tests. The injection moulding process for a 950 kN hydraulic machine uses a melt temperature of 230–240°C and a mould temperature of 45–55°C; lower mould temperatures increase internal stress at the impeller hub and reduce the number of cycles to crack initiation in 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution. A 3.0 mm thick impeller hub is gated with a fan gate at the outer diameter to orient weld lines away from the shaft bore; when the gate is moved to the hub centre, the weld line passes through the keyway and produces shaft-bore cracking after 400 h of intermittent pump operation.

Formulation for water-contact housings uses no external lubricants that could migrate into recirculating water; mould release is limited to a dilute stearate emulsion at 0.2–0.4% applied to the tool during start-up only. The finished housing is tested for internal pressure at 2.0 bar for 10 min and for impact resistance at -10°C under ISO 179-1:2020; burst pressure acceptance is set at not less than 6.0 bar for a 2.5 mm nominal wall. Because ASA CR7650 is not a grade claimed for potable-water contact under NSF/ANSI 61, its use is restricted to non-potable pump housings, irrigation bodies, and drain sump covers. The terminal articles are spa pump housings, swim-spa jet bodies, irrigation valve boxes, and outdoor pool equipment shrouds where weatherability and impact retention are required but continuous full-pipe pressure is below the specified burst threshold.
