In UV-exposed electrical enclosures for photovoltaic combiner boxes and telecommunications termination cabinets, GELOY™ ASA CR7520 is processed without additive packages that bloom to the cavity surface. The resin is predried at 80 °C for 3–4 h in a desiccant hopper dryer until residual moisture is below 0.05 %. Melt temperature is normally held between 230 °C and 255 °C, with mould surface temperature maintained at 40–70 °C to balance gloss, weld line strength and dimensional control. Wall stock is kept between 2.0 mm and 3.2 mm to limit sink around brass inserts. The saturated acrylate rubber phase retains impact after extended ISO 4892-2 xenon-arc weathering better than butadiene-based ABS under the same exposure. Outdoor electrical use is screened to UL 746C F1 protocols, while enclosure sealing is validated to IEC 60529 IP65 or IP66 depending on gasket geometry. Flame performance is limited to UL 94 HB, so live-part separation and internal arc shields remain mandatory. Titanium dioxide and carbon black concentrates are preferred for neutral colour retention; organic pigments are qualified only after ISO 4892-2 panel validation. Screw recovery speed is limited to 0.3 m/s and backpressure to 5–10 bar to reduce free melt oxidation. Gate lands should not exceed 1.0 mm to prevent shear-induced yellowing. Hot runner manifold temperature is capped at 250 °C because longer residence above that threshold shifts colour and reduces notched Izod impact measured by ISO 180/1A.
High-gloss black cowl grilles, mirror shell covers and windshield side finishers moulded from CR7520 are sensitive to gate blush because the acrylate rubber phase scatters light under residual tensile stress. The processing window narrows when in-line regrind exceeds 20 wt%. Below 235 °C, viscosity rises and the frozen layer thickens; more shear stress is transferred to the gate land and a white halo forms around pin-point gates. Above 255 °C, thermo-oxidative chain scission in the rubber phase lowers impact measured by ISO 180/1A and creates free-rubber particles that nucleate surface haze. Barrel zones are therefore set between 240 °C and 250 °C, with a hot runner manifold temperature of 245–250 °C. Injection is profiled: initial fill velocity is moderate to prevent jetting, and the final 5–10 % of volumetric fill is slowed to 20–30 % of the initial speed. Pack pressure is applied at 60–80 bar hydraulic pressure and held until the gate freezes. Cavity surfaces are polished to SPI A1 diamond finish; micro-roughness below 0.05 µm Ra is required for high-gloss exterior trim. Mould release must be free of zinc stearate because stearate residues interfere with primerless topcoat adhesion and are detected by crosshatch pull-off testing under ISO 2409. For dark colours, pigment dispersion is controlled with a two-stage high-shear mixing screw having an L/D of 18:1 to 24:1. Published CR7520-specific gloss retention data for all dark colours is limited; qualification must use part-level ISO 4892-2 panels rather than natural-colour plaques alone.
For roof-mounted HVAC louver frames and exterior sensor housings, dimensionally stable mouldings are required after thermal cycling from −20 °C to 70 °C. CR7520 is specified when the design cannot accept the brittleness of general-purpose polystyrene or the UV sensitivity of ABS. Parts are gated away from visible surfaces and ribbed at 50–60 % of adjacent wall stock to reduce warpage after ejection. Tool design uses mould shrinkage of 0.4 % to 0.6 % depending on wall thickness and flow direction; shrinkage is confirmed by ISO 294-4 before serial production. A desiccant dryer set to 80 °C with a dew point below −25 °C is required when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Moisture-induced splay appears at the gate if drying is shorter than 3 h. Mechanical properties are verified by ISO 527-2 for tensile stress at yield, ISO 178 for flexural modulus, and ISO 180/1A for notched impact at 23 °C and −30 °C. UV stability is confirmed by ISO 4892-2 cycles with rain periods. A VDI texture of VDI 24 to VDI 36 is etched into the cavity to hide scratches. Screw bosses for self-tapping fasteners use an outer diameter of 2.5 times the nominal screw diameter; smaller ratios produce cracking under outdoor thermal expansion.

Marine applications combine UV exposure, salt-laden humidity, and intermittent contact with ethanol-based cleaners and sunscreen residues. When CR7520 is moulded into ventilation grilles, helm panel trim rings, or speaker pod covers, the dominant failure mode is not UV degradation but stress cracking around screw bosses. Thread-forming torque is limited to 0.8 N·m for M3 fasteners in blind bosses. Brass inserts are specified with an OD-to-boss wall ratio of at least 1.5:1. Parts are annealed at 70 °C for 30 min after moulding when shipped to tropical marine environments to relieve orientation stress. Weathering validation follows ISO 4892-2 for UV and ISO 9227 neutral salt spray for chloride exposure. The grade is not recommended for continuous submerged load-bearing components because microcracks accelerate at temperatures above 60 °C in chlorinated seawater. Surface cleaning excludes aromatic hydrocarbons, esters and ketones; short-dwell wiping with 70 % isopropanol is permissible. Flame rating remains UL 94 HB, restricting use to non-live-part areas. Glass-filled variants are avoided because exposed fibres create capillary paths for salt ingress; unreinforced CR7520 is preferred for grille ribs with minimum thickness 2.5 mm. Mould surfaces are textured to VDI 30 or coarser to hide flow lines. Published CR7520-specific data for continuous salt-fog exposures beyond 1,000 h is limited; qualification must include part-level testing rather than plaque-only data.
Because spa and poolside control panel housings are handled with wet hands in chlorinated air, chemical resistance is screened by ASTM D543 immersion in dilute sodium hypochlorite solution at 23 °C and 50 °C. Weight gain above 0.5 % indicates formulation incompatibility. Normal pool water carries 1–3 mg/L free chlorine, but spillage of granular calcium hypochlorite raises local pH and requires rinsing. Moulded screw bosses and snap-fit arms are dimensioned with generous radii because the acrylate phase reduces notch sensitivity compared with general-purpose ABS but does not eliminate it. Impact testing is performed by ISO 180/1A at −20 °C for seasonal outdoor installation. Outdoor units are validated to ISO 4892-3 fluorescent UV for colour shift. CR7520 is not suitable for load-bearing submerged pump brackets in hot tub water above 45 °C because sanitizer oxidation products can plasticise the surface. Overmoulded thermoplastic elastomer gaskets are used only after confirming that the TPE contains no ester plasticisers that migrate into the ASA surface. Fastener torque is limited to 0.6 N·m for self-tapping screws into unreinforced bosses. Drying uses a desiccant dryer with a dew point below −25 °C and residual moisture below 0.05 % to prevent silver streaks at the gate. Flame performance is limited to UL 94 HB; a separate metallic barrier must cover the line-voltage compartment.
Injection moulding with regrind above 25 wt% requires extended drying beyond the virgin-material baseline because reheated regrind carries sorbed moisture from granulation and storage. Regrind from dark ASA parts is dried at 80 °C for 4–6 h instead of 3–4 h, and conveying air is maintained at a dew point below −25 °C. A gravimetric blender controls regrind content within ±2 wt% to avoid shift in melt flow rate and part mass. Above 30 wt%, dark-coloured parts show increased gate blush under ISO 2813 gloss measurement and a measurable drop in ISO 180/1A notched impact at −30 °C. For outdoor electrical enclosures where property retention is safety-critical, regrind content is capped at 20 wt%. For non-safety trim covers, up to 30 wt% is used only if melt residence time is below 8 min at 240 °C and batch-to-batch impact is verified by ISO 180/1A on welded reference plaques. The screw root temperature is kept below 60 °C by chilled water to prevent granule bridging in the feed throat. Backpressure is held below 8 bar because higher backpressure increases work input and accelerates yellowing of reprocessed ASA. Published CR7520-specific data for extended regrind histories beyond three heat cycles is limited; validated moulding lines therefore run periodic separation studies rather than assuming linear property retention.
