Application of SABIC GELOY™ ASA CR7510

Substitution of painted ABS with SABIC GELOY ASA CR7510 in exterior mirror housing shells eliminates a secondary paint line while retaining gloss after outdoor exposure. The resin is pre-dried in a desiccant dryer at 80°C for 4 h until granulate moisture falls below 0.05 wt%. Processing on a hydraulic injection moulding machine of 180 t to 220 t clamp force uses a barrel temperature profile of 220°C, 235°C, 245°C, 250°C, and 255°C, with a hot-runner manifold set at 240°C. Mold surface temperature is held between 50°C and 70°C. A mold temperature below 40°C produces cold weld lines at mirror mounting bosses and reduces notched impact strength at the gate scar. Sequential valve-gate control is required for housing lengths above 220 mm to prevent flow-front hesitation and surface blush. Regrind fraction should not exceed 25 wt% of virgin CR7510 because higher regrind loadings lower Charpy notched impact at -30°C below 4 kJ/m² when measured per ISO 179-1/1eA. A black UV-stabilised masterbatch is dosed at 1.5 wt% to 2.0 wt%. Compliance for automotive exterior components is evaluated under SAE J2527 xenon arc weathering at 1500 kJ/m² to 2000 kJ/m² for colour shift and gloss retention, with tensile yield after weathering tracked per ISO 527-1/-2. The terminal parts are unpainted mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, and A-pillar covers.

How Do Capstock Layer Thickness and Melt Pressure Affect Weatherability Retention in PVC Profiles?

In coextrusion of a rigid PVC window profile with an ASA capstock layer, the ASA melt curtain must remain between 230°C and 250°C at the feedblock while the PVC substrate is processed at 185°C to 205°C. The temperature differential between the two layers should not exceed 15°C at the die land entry; a larger differential generates interfacial melt fracture and delamination after cooling. Capstock thickness is controlled between 0.15 mm and 0.35 mm, representing approximately 4% to 10% of the total wall thickness. A screen pack with 80/100/120 mesh layers is installed upstream of the ASA extruder adapter to remove gel particles, but screen pack pressure above 12 MPa increases shear heating and can produce yellowing. Calibration plates are held at 65°C to 75°C with a vacuum of -0.06 bar to -0.08 bar to freeze surface gloss. Weathering performance is assessed by ISO 4892-2 xenon arc exposure for 6000 h to 8000 h or ASTM G155 cycle 1, with a Δb* value below 2.0 after 2000 h commonly specified for colour-shift compliance in European window profile specifications. The terminal products include window main profiles, door outboards, and PVC fence coextrusion caps.

Outdoor meter box wall sections that must carry an F1 outdoor suitability rating are processed with a hold pressure profile that compensates for anisotropic shrinkage along the flow and transverse axes. The shrinkage range is 0.5% to 0.7%, with the larger value measured transverse to the flow direction when the mould coolant temperature is below 45°C. To reduce post-mould warpage in boxes with wall thickness from 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm, packing pressure is maintained at 50 MPa to 70 MPa for 8 s to 12 s, followed by a cooling time of 18 s to 25 s. Gate diameter is set at 60% of the nominal wall thickness to prevent jetting and silver streaks. Regrind is limited to 20 wt% because enclosure impact requirements under IEC 62262 IK08 cannot be met when the recycle fraction exceeds this level. Carbon black masterbatch is added at 1.5 wt% to 2.5 wt% for UV opacity, and dispersion is checked on a 50 mm single-screw extruder with a screw L/D of 24:1 at 80 rpm. Material compliance is documented under UL 746C F1 for outdoor suitability, UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm, and IEC 62208 for empty enclosure performance. The terminal parts are distribution boxes, photovoltaic combiner enclosures, and outdoor telecommunication closure housings.

If Spa Shells Are Drawn Beyond a 1.45 Areal Draw Ratio, Which Thermoforming Defects Appear?

When extruded CR7510 sheet is converted into spa shells and whirlpool bath decks, the sheet is pre-dried to less than 0.05 wt% moisture and heated in a twin-station thermoforming machine until the core sheet temperature reaches 170°C to 185°C. The lower pre-stretch pressure is set at 0.5 MPa, and the final forming pressure is limited to 0.9 MPa to 1.0 MPa. Plug-assisted forming uses aluminium plugs coated with polytetrafluoroethylene at a plug speed of 250 mm/s to 400 mm/s. An areal draw ratio above 1.45 produces local wall thinning below 1.2 mm at the corner radii, and subsequent stress whitening appears when the sheet is flexed at service temperatures below 10°C. The mold temperature is held between 60°C and 80°C; lower mold temperatures create chill marks that are not removed by flame polishing. Chemical compatibility is verified by immersion testing per ISO 175 in water containing 3 mg/L to 5 mg/L free chlorine at 40°C for 28 d. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, but the ASA rubber phase resists oxidative embrittlement in chlorine- and bromine-sanitised water systems. Terminal products include thermoformed spa shells, bath tub decks, and pool skimmer lids.

HVAC Condensing Unit Covers and Low-Temperature Impact Thresholds

For outdoor HVAC condensing unit side panels and louvered grilles, CR7510 is injection moulded into large-area parts with nominal wall thickness between 3.0 mm and 3.5 mm. Clamp force is selected between 800 t and 1200 t to avoid flash at the parting line when filling from a centrally fed hot runner. Melt temperature is kept at 240°C to 260°C, while the mold surface is set to 55°C to 75°C to maintain a fine-grained surface that matches adjacent painted sheet metal. The gate land length must not exceed 1.0 mm; longer lands increase shear heating and produce brown gate blush streaks. Low-temperature impact evaluation is performed under ISO 179-1/1eA at -20°C, with a minimum Charpy notched impact requirement of 6 kJ/m² to 8 kJ/m² for parts exposed to wind-driven impact during winter operation. The use of 25 wt% regrind is allowed only if the regrind source is dry and free of polycarbonate cross-contamination. Weathering requirements follow UL 746C F1 and ASTM D4674 accelerated weathering under fluorescent UV exposure, with the criterion that no visible chalk or crack appears before 1000 h. Terminal products are condensing unit side covers, fan grilles, and top plates.

When agricultural roof panels are fabricated from ASA sheet for tractor canopies and combine side covers, the extruder must control sheet gauge by adjusting the chill-roll gap to 0.5 mm above the target thickness. Melt pressure after the gear pump is maintained at 10 MPa to 15 MPa to stabilise sheet from 2.5 mm to 5.0 mm. Chill roll temperatures are set at 75°C, 85°C, and 90°C in the three-roll stack to reduce surface haze. The sheet is then thermoformed at 175°C to 190°C. Contact with cleaning solvents containing ketones or aromatic hydrocarbons must be avoided because these chemical classes induce stress cracking in ASA, whereas isopropanol-water mixtures at 30% to 50% concentration are acceptable for wipe cleaning. Weathering durability is evaluated per ASTM G155 cycle 2 with a total radiant exposure of 2000 kJ/m² to 3000 kJ/m². Impact after weathering is tested with ISO 6603-2 instrumented puncture at 23°C to confirm ductile failure retention. Terminal products are tractor roof shells, combine side panels, and sprayer cab covers.

Replacement of Painted ABS in Appliance Exterior Parts with ASA CR7510

Outdoor appliance control panels and washing machine top covers are produced from CR7510 with a high-gloss mould finish of SPI A-2 or A-3. The resin is pre-dried at 80°C for 4 h in a hopper dryer with a dew point of -30°C or lower. Barrel temperature settings are 225°C, 235°C, 240°C, and 245°C. Injection speed is profiled to fill the cavity in 1.5 s to 2.5 s for parts with 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm wall thickness. Hold pressure is reduced from 60 MPa to 40 MPa over 6 s to avoid sink at control knob bosses. For colour-stable black or grey parts, carbon black masterbatch is let down at 2.0 wt%; for high-gloss white, titanium dioxide is used at 3.0 wt% to 5.0 wt% with a hindered amine light stabiliser at 0.2 wt% to 0.5 wt%. Accelerated weathering is run per ASTM D4459 for indoor UV exposure or ISO 4892-2 for outdoor-rated appliance parts. The terminal products include washing machine top covers, dryer control panels, and outdoor-rated air conditioning remote controller housings.
