Moulding of unpainted gray cowl vent grilles from GELOY™ ASA CR7020-GY1B299 starts with closed-loop desiccant drying. The dryer is set at 80 °C. Virgin granulate drying time is 3–4 h. The residual moisture target is below 0.05 wt%. Moisture above this value produces silver streaks at the flow front and lowers surface gloss. A general-purpose injection unit with an L/D of 20:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1 is used. The melt temperature measured in the purge is kept between 240 °C and 260 °C. The lower value protects gray color stability. The upper value is reserved for wall sections below 1.5 mm. The mould temperature is set between 40 °C and 70 °C. Grain fidelity on leather-grain surfaces is controlled at 60–70 °C. The exact melt-volume-flow rate must be confirmed against the current SABIC technical datasheet. The grade is supplied pre-colored. No dry pigment masterbatch is added. Sprue and runner regrind is limited to 10–15 wt% for visible textured surfaces. Up to 30 wt% regrind is allowed in hidden ribs only after weathering validation. Sequential valve gating is used for tools with more than 4 drop points. Hot runner manifold temperature is 240–250 °C. Injection-to-hold transfer is switched at 40–60 MPa cavity pressure. Hold pressure is 60–80 % of peak cavity pressure. Gate diameter is equal to the local wall thickness at the entry. Weld lines are shifted to low-stress non-grain zones by 0.3–0.5 s valve-gate opening delays. Finished parts are inspected under D65/10° with ΔECMC <0.5 against the approved master panel. Weatherability is evaluated per ISO 4892-2:2013 or SAE J2527. The usual exposed color retention target is below 3 ΔE after 1500 kJ/m² at 340 nm. Low-temperature impact is checked at -30 °C per ISO 179-1/1eA. Brittle failure at the gate or weld line is a rejection criterion.
Exterior mirror housings moulded in CR7020-GY1B299 are typically unpainted gray shells produced in multi-cavity tools. The limiting process variable is gate-freeze time. Because the grade is in the high-flow ASA class, the gate remains open longer than a low-flow impact copolymer would allow. For a 2.0–2.5 mm nominal wall, valve-gate diameter is 1.2–2.0 mm. Gate-freeze time at 250 °C melt temperature is normally 3–5 s. Hold pressure must be maintained until the gate seals. Early release produces sink marks around the mirror boss. Cavity pressure sensors are placed behind the outer rim and at the screw boss. Transfer occurs at 35–50 MPa cavity pressure. Hold time is 8–12 s on a 2-cavity tool with 800 cm² projected area. Clamp force is calculated at 35 kN per 100 cm². A 300-ton hydraulic machine is commonly sufficient. Mould temperature is held at 50–60 °C. Regrind of painted rejects is prohibited. Regrind of unpainted sprues is kept at 15 wt% maximum. Post-mould painting is possible only after washing with isopropanol and neutral detergent. Flame treatment is avoided. Paint adhesion is tested per ASTM D3359-17 method B after 240 h salt spray per ISO 9227:2022. No detachment below class 5B is accepted. For painted housings, a one-component polyester basecoat and two-component acrylic clearcoat are used. Baking is 80 °C for 30 min. A supporting fixture is required to prevent creep at the screw boss during baking. Published data for this specific mirror-tool configuration is limited. Production tools require cavity-pressure verification to set the actual gate-freeze time.
Glazing beads and corner staking clips in architectural fenestration form a separate downstream segment. These parts are injection moulded in GELOY™ ASA CR7020-GY1B299 to match gray PVC window profiles. The grade is selected because it avoids the chalking and yellowing observed with unpigmented styrenic polymers in south-facing profiles. The pre-colored gray is evaluated against RAL or CIELAB master references at 10° observer. Mould temperature is low at 40–50 °C to reduce cycle time. The melt temperature is 240–250 °C. The gate is placed on the non-visible bearing edge. Beads of 1.5–2.0 mm thickness fill with a 0.8–1.2 mm edge gate. Hold pressure is 30–45 MPa. Cycle time is 20–30 s for a 4-cavity family tool. The material is not load-bearing in this application. Continuous service temperature under static load is limited to 60 °C. Thermal expansion is higher than aluminum. An expansion gap of 0.3–0.5 mm per linear metre is required. No regrind is used in visible glazing beads. Up to 20 wt% regrind is allowed in corner staking clips hidden by frame channels. If a co-moulded TPV or EPDM seal is specified, the seal substrate is preheated to 40 °C. The ASA melt is kept below 250 °C to prevent seal-surface delamination. Weathering acceptance follows ASTM G155-13 cycle 1. Gloss retention after 2000 h xenon-arc exposure should remain above 70 % of the original 60° gloss for dark gray beads. Dimensional change after annealing 1 h at 80 °C is measured per ISO 294-4:2018. Total shrinkage difference from the tool is 0.4–0.7 %.
Outdoor telecommunication and control cabinets combine UV resistance with low-temperature impact. For CR7020-GY1B299, the first verification is the UL Yellow Card. The card must state the UL 94 rating at the actual minimum wall thickness. This grade is not a flame-retardant compound. If the enclosure requires UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm or 2.0 mm, another grade is required. The typical rating for a non-FR ASA of this class is HB at 1.5 mm. The second verification is outdoor suitability per UL 746C. The moulder must confirm f1 outdoor use and the maximum thickness limits on the Yellow Card. The third verification is moisture absorption. ASA absorbs less moisture than polyamide, but not zero. Saturated moisture uptake at 23 °C and 50 % RH is generally below 0.3 % for ASA. The supplier certificate controls the batch value. Enclosure doors and bases are moulded at 3.0 mm nominal wall. Flatness is measured on a granite table. Total indicator runout is 0.3 mm per 100 mm of diagonal. Gasket grooves are held to ±0.1 mm to maintain IP65 sealing under IEC 60529:1989. Regrind from rejected enclosures is limited to 15 wt% because repeated heat history shifts gray color in outdoor exposure. The melt is processed at 240–250 °C. Mould temperature is 50–60 °C. Brass threaded inserts are preheated to 80 °C. Boss wall thickness is 2.5× the nominal wall to prevent sink over the insert. Assembly screws are thread-forming types without cutting flutes. Fastener pullout is checked on a tensile machine at 5 mm/min. Chemical compatibility with outdoor cleaning agents is assessed per ISO 175:2010. Contact with strong ketones, esters, and aromatic solvents must be excluded.
| Verification item | Standard or method | Representative acceptance criterion |

| Moisture absorption | ISO 62:2008 | Below 0.3 % at 23 °C/50 % RH |
| Enclosure flatness | ISO 1101:2017 | Total indicator runout 0.3 mm per 100 mm |
| Ingress protection | IEC 60529:1989 | IP65 after gasket installation |
| Cleaning agent resistance | ISO 175:2010 | No visible stress cracks after 24 h contact |
Handheld outdoor power equipment covers engine shrouds, starter covers, and air filter housings. The gray pre-colored ASA grade is used for shrouds that must maintain appearance after intermittent fuel splash. Chemical resistance is tested per ISO 175:2010 at 23 °C for 24 h against reference fuel C. Mass change is usually specified below 2 %. Dimensional change is specified below 1 %. Continuous immersion in gasoline, ethanol blends above E10, or aromatic solvents is not permitted. Failure appears as stress cracking at injection-moulded bosses when chemical soak is combined with thread-forming screw insertion. Boss wall thickness is set at 2.5× the nominal wall. The screw pilot hole is 0.8× the screw outer diameter for thread-forming fasteners. Insertion torque is limited to 2.0 N·m for M4 screws in 8 mm bosses. Mould temperature is 50–60 °C to minimize residual stress. The melt temperature is 240–250 °C. For low-gloss orange-peel surfaces, the mould surface is acid-etched. Draft angle is 1.5° minimum on textured ribs. Regrind from unpainted sprues is added at 20 wt%. Regrind from painted housings is not used. Vibration fatigue is checked per IEC 60068-2-6:2007 random vibration, class 5M3, at engine mounting points. After 8 h, no crack is allowed at the anchor bosses. The material is limited to ambient air shrouds and fan covers. It must not be used for fuel tanks, fuel pipes, or pressurized fuel system components.
Marine and recreational-vehicle trim parts include non-load-bearing exterior accessories such as vent surrounds, hatch bezels, and rub-rail inserts. These parts are exposed to salt spray, ultraviolet radiation, and thermal cycling. GELOY™ ASA CR7020-GY1B299 is processed at 240–255 °C melt temperature and 50–60 °C mould temperature. The tool is polished to achieve 60° gloss values between 80 GU and 90 GU for glossy bezels. The higher mould temperature at 60 °C reduces surface orientation. This reduction is necessary because salt fog exposure accelerates gloss loss on highly oriented surfaces. Salt fog testing is conducted per ISO 9227:2022 for 480 h. After exposure, no blistering, cracking, or visible corrosion stain at stainless steel insert interfaces is allowed. Thermal cycling is performed between -40 °C and 80 °C for 20 cycles per IEC 60068-2-14:2009. Low-speed impact is measured at -30 °C per ISO 179-1/1eA. The gate vestige is trimmed to 0.1 mm maximum because a raised gate creates a stress concentrator during thermal cycling. Regrind usage is restricted to 10 wt% for this application. Threaded fasteners must use stainless steel or fiber-reinforced nylon shoulder washers. Direct contact with zinc-coated steel hardware is avoided because galvanic corrosion can form white deposits at the interface. The grade is not recommended for through-hull fittings or continuously immersed parts.
Outdoor surveillance camera housing bases and sun visors are injection moulded from CR7020-GY1B299 when the gray must remain stable across seasonal UV exposure. The critical process conflict is flatness of the lens-mounting boss. The grade has a mould shrinkage in the 0.5–0.7 % range. Anisotropic shrinkage around the lens opening creates ovality if gate placement is unbalanced. The lens barrel opening is held to ±0.05 mm. A film gate or diaphragm gate on the lens opening is used. Mould temperature is 50–60 °C. Cooling time is 15–20 s for 2.5 mm wall. Inserts for threaded camera mounts are preheated to 80 °C. Boss flatness is measured with an optical comparator. Total runout is 0.05 mm per 25 mm. Vibration resistance is tested per IEC 60068-2-6:2007. Salt fog is tested per ISO 9227:2022 for 480 h. Regrind is limited to 15 wt% due to lens opening tolerance. The grade is not rated for explosion-proof housings or fire-rated enclosures. Painting is not required. The moulded gray surface is the final surface. If a UV-cured hardcoat is applied to improve scratch resistance, adhesion is tested per ASTM D3359-17 method B after 240 h weathering.
