Application of SABIC GELOY™ ASA CR7010

Exterior mirror housing and cowl-vent programs route GELOY™ ASA CR7010 through reciprocating-screw injection molding machines with screw L/D ratio 20:1 to 22:1 and compression ratio 2.2:1 to 2.5:1. The feedstock is pre-dried in desiccant dryers at 80–85 °C for 3–4 h to residual moisture content ≤ 0.03 %, with supply dew point at −30 °C. Melt temperature at the nozzle is controlled between 240 °C and 260 °C, and mold temperature is kept at 50–70 °C. A carbon black masterbatch in ASA carrier is dry-blended at 2–4 wt %, depending on wall-stock thickness and the exterior black color target of L* ≤ 28 measured under D65 illuminant with 10° observer geometry. The addition level is selected after a color development study using CIELAB tolerances of ΔL* ± 0.5, Δa* ± 0.2, and Δb* ± 0.4. The automotive exterior trim parts are validated against SAE J2527 for 2,000 kJ/m² at 340 nm, with ΔE ≤ 3.0 units per ASTM D2244-23 and 60° gloss retention ≥ 80 % per ASTM D523-14. Production parts include mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, and B-pillar appliqués. The main processing limitation is jetting at high shear rates; cold runner systems with sequential valve gates are specified to prevent visible knit lines. Surface defects are controlled with mold temperature uniformity of ± 3 °C across the cavity face. End-part dimensional stability is verified according to ISO 294-4 for shrinkage in flow and cross-flow directions, with post-mold conditioning at 23 °C and 50 % RH for 48 h before measurement.

What Happens to Outdoor Electrical Enclosures Under Cyclic UV and Impact Loads?

For outdoor electrical enclosure production, GELOY™ ASA CR7010 is processed at melt temperature 230–250 °C with screw L/D ratio 20:1 and mold temperature 40–60 °C for injection-molded junction boxes, circuit breaker enclosures, and telecom pedestal covers. For wall thicknesses of 2.0–3.0 mm, holding pressure is maintained at 50–80 MPa and back pressure at 0.5–1.0 MPa to avoid black specks. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, dried resin must be conveyed in closed hoppers to prevent moisture regain above 0.03 % within 20 min. The formulation path uses 100 parts of CR7010 blended with 2.0 wt % outdoor weathering masterbatch when the enclosure is color-matched to RAL 7035 light grey, because light colors require supplemental UV absorber and hindered amine light stabilizer packages. A 0.2 wt % mold release additive of stearyl stearate type is used for deep ribs. The finished enclosures must comply with UL 746C, Rating f1 for outdoor weatherability and water absorption for polymeric enclosures intended for continuous outdoor exposure. Impact resistance is tested at −30 °C with notched Izod per ASTM D256-10 Method A, and tensile yield per ASTM D638-14 Test Method A is used as incoming resin check. Ingress protection of the final assembly is validated per IEC 60529 IP65. The limitation is that post-mold annealing must be performed at 70 °C for 2 h to relieve internal stresses before exposure to cutting fluids or cleaning solvents. Without annealing, stress cracking has been observed on bosses receiving self-tapping screws under 3 N·m assembly torque during production-scale trials on 120-ton machines.

Window Lineals and Façade Trim Profiles

Injection-molded louver frames, window sash corner keys, cladding brackets, and vent trim from GELOY™ ASA CR7010 are produced where dark color retention and low coefficient of linear thermal expansion are required. The mass temperature at the nozzle is held at 240–255 °C, and the cavity surface temperature is monitored at 60–75 °C using pressurized water units. The feedstock is dried at 85 °C for 4 h to reduce residual moisture below 0.02 %. A UV-stabilized color concentrate in ASA carrier is added at 3 wt % for dark brown or dark grey profiles; the pigment loading is adjusted to maintain reflectivity below 14 % in the near infrared band measured per ASTM C1549-16 for surface temperature control. The molds use tunnel gates with land lengths of 1.0 mm and valve-gated hot runners where flow length exceeds 120 mm. Dimensional checks follow ISO 294-4 for processing shrinkage in flow and cross-flow directions, with climatic conditioning at 23 °C and 50 % RH for 48 h. Weathering validation for building components uses ISO 4892-2:2013 Cycle 1 xenon arc exposure for 2,000 h, with ΔE ≤ 2.5 units per ASTM D2244-23 and chalking rating ≥ 7 per ISO 4628-6. The primary production limitation is gate blush on textured surfaces; the remedy is higher mold temperature near the gate and reduced shear rate below 30,000 s⁻¹. End products include louver frames, window sash corner keys, and cladding mounting clips.

In cordless power tool chassis production, chemical exposure from lithium-ion electrolyte vapors, gear grease, and aggressive hand-sweat residues drives selection of unfilled ASA/PC grades such as GELOY™ ASA CR7010. The housing halves are molded with wall thicknesses between 1.8 mm and 2.5 mm, using high-speed injection ramps of 150–250 mm/s to prevent premature freeze-off. Melt temperature is set at 240–260 °C, mold temperature at 50–70 °C, and clamping force is calculated at 40–60 MPa projected cavity pressure. The material is pre-dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h with dew point −35 °C. No filler or fiber is added because comparative falling dart impact data per ISO 6603-2 at −20 °C shows higher multiaxial energy to break than shorter-glass PC/ABS grades for the same wall stock. The screw configuration uses a general-purpose metering section with L/D 20:1 and compression ratio 2.4:1; a mixing head with dispersive pins is used when 2.5 wt % black or grey pigment masterbatch is added. End-product validation follows IEC 62841-1 for hand-held motor-operated tools, with impact testing per IEC 60068-2-75 hammer energy 0.5 J at 23 °C on battery pack top caps and motor housing shells. Chemical resistance testing per ISO 175 documents limited elongation loss after 7-day immersion in SAE 10W-30 oil at 60 °C, but published data for direct lithium-ion electrolyte contact is limited; direct sealing surfaces are therefore plated or isolated with gasket materials.

Chlorinated Water Contact Under Cyclic Suction Pressure Modifies Failure Mode in Pump Housings

Swimming pool pump housing programs subject GELOY™ ASA CR7010 to continuous water contact with chlorinated oxidant levels between 1.0 mg/L and 3.0 mg/L free chlorine, and intermittent UV exposure on strainer lids. The molded parts use thicker wall sections of 3.0–4.5 mm to resist long-term creep under suction pressure, so melt temperature is controlled at 230–245 °C and mold temperature at 60–80 °C. Post-mold annealing is performed at 80 °C for 2 h to reduce molded-in stress below the critical level for environmental stress cracking in chlorinated water. The production blend uses 100 parts CR7010 with 1.0–2.0 wt % blue or grey pigment masterbatch, with no external lubricant addition because of the risk of surface deposit accumulation on transparent strainer lids. Drying is maintained at 85 °C for 4 h with residual moisture ≤ 0.02 %. Validation includes ISO 175 immersion in 10 ppm sodium hypochlorite solution at 23 °C for 30 days, with change in tensile strength and elongation measured per ASTM D638-14. The final strainer lid must withstand 250 kPa hydrostatic test pressure without leakage, and dimensional stability is verified per ISO 75-2:2013 HDT/A at 1.8 MPa for heat exposure. Published data for GELOY™ ASA CR7010 in direct chlorinated water contact is limited; long-term outdoor validation must include 12-month Florida exposure coupons with monthly gloss and color measurement.

When High-Gloss Consumer Appliance Housings Need Chemical Resistance

In high-gloss air purifier housing production, GELOY™ ASA CR7010 is molded with polished cavity inserts to serve as a painted-metal replacement for fan shrouds and control panel enclosures. The cavity inserts are polished to SPI-A2 finish, and mold temperature is held at 60–70 °C to reproduce gloss levels above 85 GU at 60° per ASTM D523-14. Melt temperature is 245–260 °C, and injection speed is optimized to 80–120 mm/s for flow lengths up to 200 mm. The feed system uses valve-gated hot runners with thermal gate tips to eliminate cold slug marks. The formulation uses 100 parts CR7010 with 1–2 wt % titanium dioxide for white grades or 1.5 wt % carbon black masterbatch for black grades; pigment dispersion is checked by scanning electron microscopy with agglomerate size below 5 µm. Chemical resistance is validated against isopropanol 70 % and sodium hypochlorite 5 % cleaning agents using ISO 2812-1 spot tests for 1 h at 23 °C, with no visible etching or gloss reduction greater than 5 GU. End-product safety compliance follows IEC 60335-1 for household electrical appliances, and flame resistance is certified at HB classification with 1.5 mm minimum thickness per UL 94. The main molding defect observed on production lines is sink mark development at bosses on the underside of fan shrouds; the remedy is core pin retraction timing at 85 % of fill volume and reducing local wall section ratio below 2:1 from nominal wall to boss base.
