Maintain stable ambient conditions, rotate stock, and follow the SDS and local regulations.
Shelf Life SABIC GELOY™ ASA CR3020 typically has a 24-month shelf life from manufacture when stored dry, in original packaging, below 30°C and protected from sunlight.
Application of SABIC GELOY™ ASA CR3020

For unpainted automotive trim, the substitution of butadiene-based impact modifiers with crosslinked butyl acrylate rubber domains reduces UV-B-triggered oxidation and gloss loss. SABIC GELOY™ CR3020 is dried in a desiccant dryer at 80°C for 4 h to a residual moisture level below 0.03%; the hopper air inlet dew point is held at -40°C or lower. Melt temperature is maintained at 240–260°C, with barrel residence time above 260°C limited to 10 min to suppress thermo-oxidative yellowing of the SAN phase. Tool temperature is set to 60–80°C. Injection speed of 20–40 mm/s and pack pressure of 50–70 MPa are applied to 2.5–3.5 mm ribbed cowl grilles without jetting at the gate. Hot runner temperatures are set 5–10°C below peak melt temperature. Regrind is limited to 20 wt% to retain low-temperature ductility. Parts are tested under SAE J2527 at 0.55 W/(m²·nm) at 340 nm for 2,000 kJ/m²; OEM acceptance is specified through ASTM D2244 color difference and 60° gloss retention. Finished components include cowl grilles, mirror housings, B-pillar covers, and windshield garnish moldings.

What Limits Capstock Thickness in Twin-Screw Rigid PVC Coextrusion?

Rigid PVC window profile lines running capstock at sustained line speeds above 4 m/min impose two simultaneous requirements on the ASA melt: low residence-time distribution and sufficient melt elasticity to maintain a cap layer of 0.2–0.5 mm without edge neck-in. The capstock layer is held at 10–15% of total wall thickness. Coextruders used for this application are generally 25:1–30:1 L/D single-screw units feeding a feedblock at 220–230°C. The PVC substrate is maintained at 190–200°C at the die, while the ASA capstock is brought to 230–240°C to match shear viscosity; a ratio mismatch greater than 1.5:1 at the interface creates wavy flow lines and reduces planar adhesion. Line speed is held at 8–15 m/min depending on profile cooling length. Drying is performed at 80°C for 4 h with a dew point below -40°C. A 90° peel fixture mounted to a 5 kN universal tensile tester is used to evaluate adhesion; published data for GELOY CR3020/PVC peel strength is limited. Adhesion is sensitive to TiO₂ levels above 12 wt% in the capstock. Finished profiles are tested for dimensional stability under EN 12608 and RAL-GZ 716. End products include window lineals, door sills, and garage door header profiles.

Because the SAN matrix absorbs less UV than butadiene-modified impact systems, outdoor metered disconnect enclosures use ASA for dimensional retention without painting. SABIC GELOY™ CR3020 is injection molded with a melt temperature of 240–260°C and a tool temperature of 60–80°C. Wall sections of 2.5–4.0 mm are filled through fan gates with a gate depth of 2/3 the nominal wall; a pack pressure of 60–80 MPa prevents sink at mounting bosses. Black enclosures use a color concentrate at 2–4 wt%; regrind is limited to 15 wt% when UL RTI must be preserved. Outdoor suitability is evaluated under UL 746C using UV and moisture exposure protocols; Relative Thermal Index and Outdoor Suitability are thickness- and color-dependent and must be obtained from the specific UL yellow card. Creepage distances are calculated from Comparative Tracking Index measured per IEC 60112 with platinum electrodes at 250 V; if the measured CTI is below 400 V, IEC 60664-1 pollution degree 3 requires recalculated clearances and creepage distances. Enclosure parts include disconnect switch housings, photovoltaic combiner boxes, and telecommunication splice closures. Terminal standoffs and DIN rail pockets are designed with 0.5–1.0° draft and 0.25 mm radii to avoid stress cracking.

When Thermoforming Depth Exceeds 4:1 Draw Ratio in Marine Panel Production

In sheet extrusion lines processing SABIC GELOY™ CR3020 for marine dash panels, the polishing stack is normally set to 80–90°C and a gear pump holds die pressure at 8–12 MPa, producing sheet 2–6 mm thick. Thermoforming then requires sheet surface temperatures of 170–190°C, with ceramic heaters set to 220–240°C; aluminum tools are held at 60–70°C. Draw ratios above 4:1 reduce wall thickness below 0.8 mm at corner transitions and require plug assist speed below 150 mm/s. Vacuum is applied at 0.5–0.8 bar through 1.0 mm diameter vent holes spaced 25–35 mm apart. Weatherability of formed panels is verified with ASTM G154 Cycle 1 and ASTM D2244. The material is not recommended for continuous immersion in 5% sodium hypochlorite or aromatic hydrocarbons; incidental splash contact with dilute pool chlorine and salt spray is accepted. Regrind from sheet skeletons is limited to 30 wt% to preserve melt strength. End products include helm dash panels, spa skirts, and filter housing covers.

Below-Grade Irrigation Lidding Without Pressure-Bearing Wetted Walls

Below-grade irrigation lidding without pressure-bearing wetted walls uses the acrylic rubber phase to resist surface microcracking from cyclic winter–summer soil movement. SABIC GELOY™ CR3020 is molded with a melt temperature of 240–260°C, tool temperature of 60–80°C, and injection pressure of 70–90 MPa because the flat lid geometry requires high packing to avoid sink at 4–6 mm thick bosses. Post-industrial reprocessed material is limited to 25 wt%; no external PCR is used when UL 746C RTI must be maintained. Mold flow simulation is used to place weld lines away from cable entry slots and latching hooks. The grade is not specified for continuous internal pressure above 0.5 MPa at 23°C for wetted valve bodies; pressure service evaluations for such configurations follow ASTM D1598-23. Installation in soil with pH below 4.5 accelerates surface attack of the SAN matrix, so below-grade parts require a surrounding aggregate bed. End products include controller enclosures, valve box lids, filter bowls without internal pressure, and irrigation manifold covers. Stainless steel inserts are press-fitted below 0.5 mm interference.

Thermally Stable Dark-Gray Vent Flashing and Hail Impact Retention

Roof vent flashing, gable louvers, and ridge vent covers made from dark-gray ASA are expected to survive 25 mm diameter hail impact without brittle fracture at -10°C. Injection-molded vent flashing with 2.0–3.0 mm walls is produced with a melt temperature of 250–260°C and cooling time of 15–20 s. Dark-gray color masterbatch is added at 1–2 wt%. Impact toughness is evaluated using ISO 179-1 notched Charpy tests at -30°C after 3,000 kJ/m² Xenon exposure to detect embrittlement. The parts are fastened to PVC pipe collars with EPDM gaskets; no solvent-based PVC cement should contact the ASA surface because tetrahydrofuran and cyclohexanone cause environmental stress cracking. Coextruded dark-gray ASA sheet for louvers is run at 220–240°C. Finished roof accessories are validated for color change and surface cracking under ISO 4892-2. End products include roof vent flashings, ridge vent covers, and gable louvers.
