Application of SABIC COHERE VLDPE 8380

In high-speed vertical form-fill-seal lines processing snack pouches, powdered beverage sachets, and portion packs at cycle rates above 120 pouches/min, sealant layers based on SABIC COHERE VLDPE 8380 are coextruded in three-layer blown or cast structures to lower seal initiation without sacrificing hot-tack strength. The resin is specified at a density of 0.883 g/cm³ per ASTM D1505 and a melt flow rate of 0.80 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg per ASTM D1238-20 or ISO 1133-1:2022. In a typical three-layer arrangement, the sealant layer occupies 15–20% of a total film thickness of 70–100 µm; the middle and outer layers are based on 0.918–0.924 g/cm³ LLDPE to maintain modulus and bubble stability. The sealant blend consists of 70–85 wt% grade 8380, 10–25 wt% LDPE extrusion grade, and 3–5 wt% anti-block masterbatch carrying 5–10 µm synthetic silica. Blown film conversion uses a die gap of 1.8–2.4 mm, BUR of 2.0:1–2.5:1, and melt temperatures of 195–220 °C; bubble instability is observed when the melt temperature exceeds 230 °C because low melt tension at 0.883 g/cm³ no longer resists neck-in and flapping. Seal performance is benchmarked with ASTM F2029 and ASTM F1921: on high-speed lines, a hot-tack force of 0.5 N/25 mm minimum at 150 °C seal bar temperature is commonly required, while seal initiation is typically checked between 80 °C and 95 °C. Food contact compliance is covered by FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) with conditions of use and by EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I, subject to overall migration testing below the 10 mg/dm² limit. The end article is a 20–50 g preformed pouch or a form-fill-seal sachet for dry particulates, where seal integrity is subjected to internal burst testing at pressures between 20 kPa and 40 kPa depending on pack volume. Because grade 8380 is metallocene-based and suffers reduced bubble stability at high melt temperature, converters using shallow dies below 1.6 mm die gap report film gauge variation and periodic seal-contamination events from die lip oxidation; placing the sealant layer inside the bubble can reduce oxidative deposits, but this configuration lowers hot-tack consistency if condensate is not controlled on the inner bubble surface.

What Limits Hot Tack When Grade 8380 Replaces EVA in Medical Pouch Sealant Webs?

Seal initiation is not the only critical variable when SABIC COHERE VLDPE 8380 is evaluated as a sealant web for terminally sterilised medical device pouches. The medical packaging line typically uses a two- to four-station heat-sealing press operating at 120–160 °C with dwell times of 0.3–1.5 s, and the sealant layer is coextruded against PET or uncoated nylon to create a fibre-tear-free opening surface. Grade 8380 is compounded with 3–5 wt% silica anti-block and, where lower coefficient of friction is required, 0.1–0.3 wt% erucamide slip agent. In Tyvek-free configurations, a 30–60 µm sealant layer is used; in Tyvek lidding, the sealant is applied as a 25–40 µm film that must seal against uncoated Tyvek at temperatures at least 10 °C below the Tyvek thermal degradation threshold. Seal strength is measured per ASTM F88/F88M-21 with 15 mm wide specimens at a crosshead speed of 200–300 mm/min; validated medical pouch specifications commonly set a 1.5–4.0 N/15 mm peel seal range for opening without fibre tear. Hot tack is monitored under ASTM F1921 because peel-open forces after 0.1 s cooling indicate whether a pouch can enter a conveyor without spring-back. Low-density VLDPE of 0.883 g/cm³ widens the low-temperature sealing window but has lower thermal conductivity than EVA; therefore seal dwell may require an additional 0.2 s on high-cycle equipment to reach interfacial temperature. The resin is compatible with ethylene oxide sterilisation cycles at 55 °C and 60% RH, while gamma and electron-beam sterilisation require validation per ISO 11137-1:2006; published data for the specific gamma-dose tolerance of grade 8380 in laminate form is limited. Biological evaluation for patient-contacting outer surfaces shall follow ISO 10993-5:2009 for cytotoxicity, and the packaging system must satisfy ISO 11607-1:2019 for process validation and seal integrity after ageing. Operating limits include an upper sealing temperature of 170 °C to avoid heat-induced wrinkles and seal thinning; below 110 °C the seal remains under-bonded and may show intermittent leak paths in dye penetration testing per ASTM F3039-15.

Coextruded Cast Film Sealant Webs for Liquid Sachet and Tube Laminates

For liquid shampoo sachets, condiment pouches, and tube laminate inner layers, SABIC COHERE VLDPE 8380 is selected as the sealant web because its 0.883 g/cm³ density lowers the sealing pressure needed to push adhesive polymer into the voids of a printed laminate. Cast film lines with 3 to 5 layers operate at melt temperatures of 200–225 °C, chill roll temperatures of 15–25 °C, and line speeds from 150 m/min to 300 m/min. The sealant layer is usually 20–35 µm thick in a 70–120 µm laminate and is formulated with 70–80 wt% grade 8380, 15–25 wt% LDPE, and 3–5 wt% anti-block masterbatch. A lower melt temperature is maintained because VLDPE degrades by oxidation at stagnation points above 250 °C; dies with internal deckles are preferred to reduce edge accumulation. Seal strength after filling is measured on laminated structures with ASTM F88/F88M-21 using 25 mm width strips at a 300 mm/min peel rate; typical destructive seal values for stand-up pouches are 20–40 N/25 mm because the failure mode is fibre tear in the film rather than adhesive peel. For liquid contents, the laminate is also tested for channel leaks by vacuum decay per ASTM D3078-02; a minimum pressure differential of 20 kPa for 30 s is common for sachet evaluation. The end article is a 5–20 mL single-dose cosmetic sachet or a 250–500 mL stand-up pouch with a low headspace fill. Because grade 8380 has low melt flow, die buildup from the anti-block masterbatch is managed by using a 2–3 wt% processing aid masterbatch in the sealant layer; published data for this specific configuration is limited, so line-specific torque and die-pressure monitoring should be recorded against a material baseline. Food-contact and cosmetic-packaging migration testing follows EU 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) as applicable; for non-food liquid detergent packaging, the resin must pass stress-cracking resistance tests in the filled state because sealant layers are under hoop stress at side seals.

When Cast Stretch Film Lines Demand Higher Puncture Retention

Cast stretch film lines processing LLDPE at 0.920 g/cm³ can introduce SABIC COHERE VLDPE 8380 at 5–10 wt% in outer or skin layers to modify puncture resistance without shifting the overall gauge. The five-layer die configuration uses a target total film gauge of 15–25 µm for hand wrap and 25–50 µm for machine wrap. Extruder barrel temperatures for the VLDPE-bearing skin layer are held at 210–240 °C, while the core and substrate layers are processed at 230–260 °C; a chilled primary roll at 18–28 °C and secondary cooling roll at 15–22 °C produce the quench rate that controls crystallinity and tack. No cling agent is supplied by grade 8380; polyisobutylene tackifier at 1–3 wt% or a formulated cling masterbatch is still required in the skin layer. The puncture resistance of the film is checked with ASTM D5748-19 using a 19 mm diameter probe at 250 mm/min and is compared at equal gauge to a 0.918 g/cm³ mLLDPE control; published data for grade 8380 in this exact formulation is limited, but lower-density VLDPE grades typically improve puncture force by 10–20% at 8 wt% addition and this must be verified per line. Elmendorf tear is measured per ASTM D1922-15 in both machine and transverse directions; the expected trade-off is a reduction in machine-direction tear and an improvement in stretch retention, but no single value is transferable across chill roll temperatures. Processing limitations include a narrow stretch ratio window of 200–300% pre-stretch; above 300% the film may show holes initiated by hard gel particles. For automated pallet wrapping, load retention is measured by stretch film field trials using a 70–90% pre-stretch setting and a 20 kg containment force; the film must show no edge tear after 24 h of load cycling.

Plastomer-Modified Polypropylene for Thin-Wall Injection Molding

In thin-wall injection molding of polypropylene homopolymer for dairy cups and reusable food containers, SABIC COHERE VLDPE 8380 is evaluated as an impact modifier at 10–15 wt%. The blend is prepared in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 36:1–44:1, a screw speed of 300–500 rpm, and a flat temperature profile from 180 °C to 220 °C. Injection molding then uses a clamp force sufficient for the projected area and wall thicknesses of 0.4–0.8 mm; barrel temperatures are 200–230 °C, hot runner temperatures 210–230 °C, and mould temperature 20–40 °C. Impact performance is quantified by notched Charpy impact per ISO 179-1:2010 at 23 °C and -20 °C, and tensile modulus is determined per ISO 527-2:2012 at 1 mm/min. The low density of grade 8380 reduces tensile modulus more than an equivalent melt-flow POE at the same loading; formulators often cap the addition at 12 wt% to maintain flexural modulus in stackable containers. The blend is also subject to organoleptic testing for food-contact applications under EU 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c). Published data for the specific 8380/PP configuration is limited; converters must establish the exact dispersion and rubber particle size distribution by scanning electron microscopy before specifying the compound. Injection moulding processors report that melt flow of the final blend drops relative to the base PP; therefore thin-wall filling at wall thicknesses below 0.5 mm may require flow enhancers or a higher MFR PP grade. The end article can be a 150–500 mL thin-wall container or lid where failure under stacking is evaluated by top-load testing and the melt-temperature limit is maintained below 240 °C to avoid oxidative discoloration of the VLDPE phase.

At distribution temperatures below -25 °C, sealant webs for IQF vegetables, frozen seafood, and ice-cream dome lids are prone to seal pop-open if the sealant resin has a high glass-transition contribution or excessive crystallinity. SABIC COHERE VLDPE 8380 is placed in the inner sealant layer of a three-layer blown film at 15–20 µm thickness, coextruded with a 0.918–0.926 g/cm³ LLDPE core and a slip-modified LLDPE outer layer. Melt temperature is controlled at 190–210 °C, which is below the point where bubble stability collapses at 230 °C, and the die gap is kept at 1.8–2.2 mm with a BUR of 2.0:1–2.4:1. Low-temperature seal strength is measured after conditioning the sealed coupons at -25 °C for 24 h and testing per ASTM F88/F88M-21; converters commonly require seal strengths above 2.0 N/15 mm at -25 °C without film splitting. Film impact at low temperature is checked per ASTM D1790-21, while dart drop impact at room temperature is measured per ASTM D1709-16a; values below -25 °C are comparative only because the test standard does not specify frozen conditioning. The end structures range from 60–120 µm total thickness depending on product weight. Trim from the sealant layer can be recycled into the middle layer up to 20 wt% without measurable gel formation if the re-grind is moisture-controlled below 200 ppm water. Compliance for frozen food packaging follows the same EU 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) obligations as the dry-food sealant webs, with low-temperature migration testing conducted on the final laminate because migrants diffuse more slowly at frozen storage temperatures but can be released upon microwave reheating if the film remains in contact with food.
