SABIC ABS X11 is classified as a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-molding grade within the SABIC CYCOLAC resin portfolio. The grade is supplied as natural or pre-colored pellets and is specified where a controlled balance of melt flow, notched impact retention, surface replication, and dimensional reproducibility is required. Under the manufacturer’s published typical-property profile, the melt volume-flow rate is 24 cm³/10 min at 220 °C and 10 kg applied mass when determined by ISO 1133-1, and density is 1.04 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1. SABIC ABS X11 is not a flame-retardant, heat-resistant, or high-flow specialty grade; it occupies the medium-flow segment of the ABS injection-molding range and is therefore specified for parts with moderate flow-length requirements and general mechanical loading.
The mechanical property profile is normally generated on ISO 527-2 type 1A tensile specimens and ISO 180/1A notched Izod specimens molded at a melt temperature near 240 °C and a mold surface temperature near 50 °C. Typical tensile stress at yield is 45 MPa at 50 mm/min crosshead speed, with tensile strain at yield measured at 2.2%. Tensile modulus is 2450 MPa, while flexural modulus under ISO 178 is 2300 MPa. Notched Izod impact at 23 °C is 27 kJ/m², and notched Charpy impact at 23 °C is 25 kJ/m². The deflection temperature under load at 1.80 MPa is 77 °C per ISO 75-2 method A, and Vicat softening temperature is 96 °C at 50 N per ISO 306 method B50. These values are dry-as-molded typical values and do not constitute lot-specific specification limits.

On a manufacturing floor with ambient relative humidity above 60%, SABIC ABS X11 must be dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h to a residual moisture level of ≤0.05 wt%. Open-hopper exposure beyond 30 min at 60% relative humidity can reintroduce sufficient moisture to produce surface splay, loss of gloss, and occasional voiding in thicker sections. A 30 mm diameter, 20:1 L/D reciprocating-screw injection unit on a 120 t hydraulic machine is adequate when cavity pressure is limited to 400 bar; a projected part area of 200 cm² yields a clamp force demand near 80 t. Typical barrel zone settings are 210 °C feed, 230 °C transition, and 240 °C metering. Melt temperature measured by air-shot pyrometer should remain within 230–250 °C, and mold surface temperature should be maintained between 40 °C and 60 °C.
Melt residence time is a critical threshold for X11. On production-scale injection machines with 25 mm screw diameter and 20:1 L/D, melt residence above 10 min at 240 °C has been observed to reduce notched Izod impact by 5–10% relative to virgin pellet behavior. The failure mode is consistent with oxidative degradation of the polybutadiene phase and yellowing of the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix. For wall sections below 1.2 mm, the nominal notched Izod of 27 kJ/m² is not retained. Rapid cooling freezes a finer skin-core morphology and shortens the deformation path of the rubber phase, so impact performance should be verified on actual molded parts rather than on standardized laboratory specimens. Published data for sub-1 mm X11 configurations is limited; however, conventional mold-fill practice indicates that raising melt temperature above 260 °C to improve thin-wall fill produces gas generation, splay, and further loss of impact strength.
Back pressure should be controlled at 5–10 bar hydraulic, peripheral screw speed at 0.10–0.25 m/s, and decompression at 2–5 mm. For a vented barrel, vacuum pressure at the vent should be maintained below -0.6 bar relative to atmosphere to remove low-molecular-weight volatiles. At melt temperatures above 255 °C, butadiene-phase crosslinking can increase viscosity and generate dark specks in light-colored parts. When hot-runner systems are used, manifold and nozzle temperatures should not exceed the metering-zone setpoint by more than 10 °C, and gate freeze-off time should be confirmed by part-weight stability rather than by visual inspection alone.
Because X11 exhibits a molding shrinkage of 0.5–0.7%, tooling should be cut with uniform wall thicknesses of 2.0–2.5 mm for housings, brackets, and trim components. Snap-fit geometries require a minimum base radius of 0.5 mm; ISO 180/1A notched Izod data are a single stress-concentrator measure and do not substitute for mold-flow analysis of weld lines or high-strain snap-fit deflections. For one-time snap-fit assembly, outer-fiber strain should remain below the tensile yield strain of 2.2%. High-cycle snap-fits, or designs requiring repeated flexing at sub-ambient temperature, are not the primary application envelope for X11; a polycarbonate/ABS blend or impact-modified grade is typically specified in those conditions.
X11 is positioned as a general-purpose injection-molding grade. A heat-resistant ABS grade modified with α-methylstyrene or maleimide can raise HDT/A above 100 °C but reduces melt volume-flow rate. In the SABIC ABS portfolio, such heat-resistant grades commonly fall below 12 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg, while X11 at 24 cm³/10 min fills flow paths at lower injection pressure. Conversely, X11 should not be used where the part must survive paint-bake cycles above 90 °C without dimensional creep, because its HDT/A of 77 °C and continuous service ceiling limit load-bearing use at elevated temperature.
Flame-retardant ABS grades formulated to UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm differ from X11 in density and impact behavior. The brominated or phosphorus-nitrogen systems used to achieve V-0 can increase density by 5–10% and reduce notched Izod impact by 10–30% relative to X11. Those grades also require lower melt temperatures to avoid acidic degradation byproducts. X11 carries a standard UL 94 HB classification and is therefore excluded from applications with regulatory flame-barrier requirements unless an external shielding or flame-retardant coating is part of the approved system.
Compared with extrusion-grade ABS, X11 has a higher melt volume-flow rate and lower melt strength. Extrusion-grade ABS types are often set below 10 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg to maintain sheet or profile sag resistance. X11 is optimized for injection cavity replication and is not suitable for deep-draw sheet line operations requiring high melt tension. Compared with glass-fiber-reinforced ABS, X11 has much lower flexural modulus; glass-filled grades can exceed 6000 MPa under ISO 178, but they exhibit lower notched Izod values and increase screw and barrel wear on general-purpose injection units. X11 remains the lower-viscosity alternative when stiffness above 2300 MPa is not the controlling requirement.
Regulatory compliance for X11 must be confirmed by lot-specific documentation. Standard grades are generally assessed against RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 obligations for articles, but food-contact, medical, or toy-grade clearances under FDA 21 CFR or EU 10/2011 are not automatic. Users must obtain a supplier letter of compliance before specifying X11 in a regulated food-contact or medical application.
