In technical datasheets, SABIC ABS MG37CR is classified as a plateable acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin for injection molding of decorative parts requiring electrolytic nickel/chromium metallization. The grade carries the CYCOLAC trade designation and is formulated with a poly(acrylonitrile-styrene) continuous phase and a grafted polybutadiene rubber phase; the rubber particle size distribution, grafting ratio, and molecular weight distribution are balanced to reduce molded-in orientation and improve etch uniformity. Representative property values from the public datasheet include a melt volume-flow rate of 21 cm³/10 min at 220°C under 10 kg load per ISO 1133-1:2022, a density of 1.04 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019, a tensile stress at yield near 41 MPa at 50 mm/min per ISO 527-2:2012, a flexural modulus near 2100 MPa per ISO 178:2019, and a notched Izod impact near 26 kJ/m² at 23°C per ISO 180/A:2023. The Vicat softening temperature is near 101°C under 50 N load per ISO 306:2013/B50, which places the grade in the standard ABS heat-resistance range rather than the high-heat ABS class. These values are material-selection data and not contractual lot-release limits; they may shift with color concentrates, regrind fraction, moisture exposure, or specimen preparation.
The following table compares representative values from the SABIC ABS MG37CR datasheet with a typical general-purpose non-plateable ABS. Data are rounded from public datasheets; published data for the specific MG37CR configuration is limited to standard injection-molded specimen tests.

The principal conflict is rheological. The elevated melt-flow behavior of MG37CR improves filling of thin-wall and long-flow-length tools but reduces melt strength and can intensify jetting when the gate and runner dimensions are unchanged from a lower-flow ABS. Gate diameters below 1.0 mm or land lengths above 1.5 mm can produce flow-front defects, splay, and localized residual stress that later appear as uneven etch gloss. Tools designed for lower-flow ABS may need a widened edge gate, a diaphragm gate, or a sequential valve-gate arrangement for flat decorative bezels. Melt temperature is commonly maintained in the 230–260°C band; the upper limit is more restrictive than some high-heat ABS grades because prolonged heat exposure degrades the butadiene phase and reduces etch microporosity. Mold surface temperature is typically 50–80°C. Surface temperatures below 50°C accelerate freeze-off and increase orientation at the skin, producing local differences in plating thickness and adhesion. The material must be dried at 80°C for 2–4 h in a desiccant dryer to less than 0.05% moisture; hot-air hopper drying is inadequate at relative humidity above 60%. Regrind addition is commonly limited to 20 wt%. Published data for the interaction between regrind level and plate peel strength in this specific grade is limited, so revalidation of peel strength and thermal cycling is advisable above 15 wt% regrind.
In electroplating operations, the chromic acid/sulfuric acid etch bath selectively oxidizes butadiene-rich domains and creates mechanical anchoring sites for electroless metal deposition. A plateable ABS such as MG37CR is formulated so that the etch generates dense microporosity without excessive surface roughening. The common etch window for plateable ABS is 360–420 g/L CrO₃ and 280–380 g/L H₂SO₄ at 60–70°C for 4–12 min; individual OEM specifications may restrict bath activity to control blistering and channeling. After electroless copper deposition and electrolytic thickening, coating adhesion is commonly assessed with a 90° peel test according to ASTM B533, while thermal-cycle durability is evaluated under ASTM B604 or OEM-specific cycles from −40°C to +80°C. The adhesion of plated metal to MG37CR depends strongly on residual stress in the molded substrate. Low-stress molding with adequate mold temperature and slower filling near the gate improves adhesion retention after thermal cycling relative to unmodified ABS grades with lower melt-flow and higher frozen-in orientation. Plated shells thicker than 40 µm at sharp edges may generate differential thermal stress and microcracking; edge radii should be increased and deposit thickness locally reduced when the part is subjected to rapid temperature changes.
Benchmarking is typically performed on injection-molded plaques rather than pellet specimens. Against a high-heat ABS, CYCOLAC MG37CR shows lower heat-deflection resistance; the HDT/A is near 84°C at 1.80 MPa per ISO 75-2/A:2020, while many high-heat ABS grades exceed 95°C. This difference restricts the use of MG37CR in components subjected to paint-bake ovens above 95°C or to concentrated heat sources inside the vehicle. Against a high-impact PC/ABS blend, the ABS grade has lower low-temperature notched impact and higher thermal expansion, but it offers more uniform chemical attack during the etch step because the surface does not contain polycarbonate domains that can hydrolyze under alkaline cleaning solutions. For plated exterior trim with broad flat surfaces, MG37CR can provide lower molded-in stress and improved metal adhesion compared with many high-glass-transition styrenics, but the low-temperature Izod impact near 10 kJ/m² at −30°C per ISO 180/A:2023 remains a boundary condition. Applications transferred directly from PC/ABS should be evaluated with instrumented puncture testing at low temperature and with full plating stacks, because the thermal-cycle response of a metal-plated ABS can differ from an unplated substrate. Published data for the specific MG37CR configuration is limited when plating thickness exceeds 35 µm and when the service temperature cycles below −30°C.
Production line failures in plateable ABS often manifest as gate blush, flow-front halo, and post-etch microvoids when mold surface temperature is below 50°C or injection velocity is excessive. Reciprocating screw machines with L/D 20–24 and clamp force in the 800–1500 kN range require careful tuning of decompression to avoid air entrapment. The high melt-flow of MG37CR does not eliminate the need for cold-slug wells and adequate venting; vents deeper than 0.03 mm may flash with low-viscosity melt, while insufficient venting produces gas burns that appear as pinholes after electroplating. Shot cushion is maintained at 3–6 mm, and screw back pressure is typically 0.5–1.0 MPa to ensure homogeneous mixing without excessive shear heating. Cavity pressure in thin-wall decorative tools is typically 30–60 MPa, and clamp force is calculated from projected area with a safety factor; low-cavity-pressure packing can leave sink marks that telegraph through the plated surface.
Chemical compatibility follows the general behavior of ABS terpolymers. The material resists aqueous acids, bases, and neutral salt solutions at ambient temperature but is softened or stress-cracked by ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and certain chlorinated solvents. Residual stress is the determining variable in environmental stress cracking; the low-stress molding capability of MG37CR delays crack initiation but does not eliminate it in aggressive media. Cleaning solvents with high aromatic content are not recommended for plated or unplated surfaces. The resin is not suitable for continuous contact with strong oxidizing acids except for the short etch-bath exposure used for plating; prolonged contact with sodium hypochlorite or concentrated nitric acid degrades the butadiene phase and reduces surface quality. In service above 60°C, aqueous glycol or alkaline solutions may accelerate oxidative degradation of the polybutadiene phase and lower tensile strength. Regulatory compliance depends on the colorant package and the electroplating stack; unfilled natural ABS grades are generally evaluated under REACH, RoHS 2011/65/EU, and flame-rating standards such as UL 94 at the relevant thickness. No food-contact claim is made without a written grade-specific compliance letter from the resin supplier.
Hot-runner systems used with this grade require valve-gate or thermal-gate configurations with internal runner diameters of 3–6 mm. Melt residence time in the manifold is kept below 10 min at 240°C to avoid black specks and etch defects. The nozzle tip temperature is often set 5–10°C below the front barrel zone to reduce drool caused by the grade’s high flow. Screw recovery is adjusted to maintain a melt cushion of 3–6 mm; shot-to-shot consistency in melt volume is necessary because the etched surface can reveal small variations in packing. Drying of virgin and regrind material is confirmed by moisture analysis using ISO 15512:2019 or Karl Fischer titration. For ribbed or bossed parts, sink marks can appear when rib thickness exceeds 60% of the nominal wall; rib thickness is therefore kept at 50–60% of the adjoining wall. Mold shrinkage of the grade is approximately 0.4–0.7% per ISO 294-4:2018, and post-molding dimensional stabilization before etching normally requires 24 h at room temperature. These processing boundaries are derived from general plateable ABS practice and equipment manufacturer guidance; published data for this specific configuration under non-standard hot-runner systems is limited.
