    More Introduction

The product designation SABIC ABS FR15U identifies a flame-retardant injection moulding grade of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene supplied by SABIC. The material is specified primarily for indoor electrical and electronic enclosures, power-adaptor housings, wiring-device covers, circuit-breaker housings, and consumer-electronics frames where a UL 94 V-0 rating at a minimum wall thickness of 1.5 mm is required. The resin is not a general-purpose ABS; the flame-retardant system reduces room-temperature impact relative to non-flame-retardant grades while increasing melt flow for thin-wall filling. Published supplier data list a melt volume rate of 22 cm3/10 min at 220 °C under 10 kg load to ISO 1133-1:2022, and a density of 1.19 g/cm3 to ISO 1183-1:2019. These values place the material in the medium-to-high flow segment for flame-retardant ABS. The grade is not listed for direct food-contact use under FDA 21 CFR, and compliance with medical-device standards is not claimed in the supplier datasheet.

Typical production applications are restricted to indoor service because no UV stabilization package is specified for prolonged outdoor exposure. Processing on general-purpose injection moulding machines is possible when the melt temperature is kept within the 200 °C to 240 °C window and when the material is pre-dried to a residual moisture content below 0.05 wt%. The short-term processing limit is 260 °C; above this temperature, decomposition of the flame-retardant package produces surface splay and volatile acidic degradation products. On production lines using all-electric injection moulding machines, the grade fills multi-cavity tools at moderate to high injection speeds, but the low elongation at break and notched impact strength require gate and runner design that avoids weld lines in load-bearing regions. Flow length-to-wall-thickness data published by the supplier are not available for every tool configuration; tool trials are therefore required when flow length exceeds 100 mm at a wall thickness of 1.5 mm.

Flame Retardant Mechanism and UL 94 Classification

Under UL 94 vertical burn testing, specimens of 1.5 mm thickness achieve a V-0 classification. The test requires that the afterflame time of each specimen does not exceed 10 s, total afterflame time for five specimens does not exceed 50 s, total afterflame plus afterglow time after the second flame application does not exceed 30 s, and no flaming drips ignite the cotton indicator. This classification applies to the unfilled natural grade in the tested thickness; final-part verification must be performed on the moulded part in the production colour because pigments and regrind can alter drip and afterflame behaviour. The flame-retardant system functions through condensed-phase char promotion and gas-phase radical inhibition; the exact package is proprietary but is understood to be halogen-based. The grade is therefore not suitable for halogen-free specifications such as IEC 61249-2-21. For appliance housings under IEC 60335-1, glow-wire ignition temperature, glow-wire flammability index, and comparative tracking index may be required. Published data for this specific configuration are limited; these values must be verified by the end-product manufacturer on the final part. Carbon black and other pigments can affect flame performance at wall thicknesses approaching 1.2 mm.

What Drying and Melt Processing Conditions Preserve the Flame-Retardant Package?

Pre-drying is mandatory when the resin has been exposed to ambient relative humidity above 60%. A dehumidified-air dryer with a dew point below -30 °C and a drying temperature of 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h should be used. Residual moisture in the granulate must remain below 0.05 wt%; otherwise the melt develops surface splay, and UL 94 performance can decrease at the lower thickness limit. Barrel temperature settings should be profiled at 210 °C in the rear zone, 220 °C in the centre zone, 230 °C in the front zone, and 230 °C at the nozzle. Mold temperatures between 40 °C and 70 °C are used. The higher end of the mold-temperature range improves weld-line strength and surface gloss but extends cooling time.

Injection pressure in production tools is typically 70 MPa to 100 MPa, with holding pressure set at 50% to 70% of the peak injection pressure. Back pressure should be limited to 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa to avoid excessive shear heating of the flame-retardant package. Residence time in the barrel should not exceed 10 min during cycle interruptions. At melt temperatures above 260 °C, degradation is rapid; if interruption exceeds 15 min, the barrel should be purged with a low-viscosity ABS or a commercial purging compound. Regrind from sprues and runners may be used up to 20 wt% for UL 94-listed applications when the regrind is dry and free of oil and mould-release contamination. Higher regrind levels can lower notched impact strength and cause variability in flame-retardant performance.

Because the notched impact strength of 14 kJ/m2 at 23 °C is lower than that of general-purpose ABS, moulded bosses, snap-fit arms, and weld lines require more generous radii. The tensile strain at break is approximately 8%; snap-fit deflection should therefore be limited to a maximum strain of 50% of the break value. In practice this restricts a simple cantilever snap beam of 50 mm length to approximately 2 mm deflection. The flexural modulus of 2400 MPa supports structurally rigid enclosures, but thread-forming screws are preferred over thread-cutting screws to reduce boss cracking.

Ultrasonic welding of this grade is possible but requires lower amplitude than standard ABS. On production lines with 20 kHz ultrasonic welders, the energy director geometry should be a 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm triangular bead, and the weld time should be reduced relative to standard ABS to avoid flash. Heat staking is preferable for low-stress assembly because it avoids crack initiation at gate vestiges. Post-moulding annealing at 75 °C for 1 h may reduce moulded-in stress but can cause dimensional movement; parts with tight tolerances should be checked after annealing.

When General-Purpose ABS or Flame-Retardant PC/ABS Is Substituted

Compared with a general-purpose ABS, SABIC ABS FR15U provides the required UL 94 V-0 performance but trades away a portion of room-temperature impact and heat resistance. General-purpose ABS commonly shows a notched Charpy impact of 20 kJ/m2 to 30 kJ/m2 and a heat deflection temperature near 95 °C at 1.80 MPa, whereas FR15U is specified at approximately 14 kJ/m2 and 82 °C. The flow of FR15U is higher than many general-purpose grades, which can permit lower clamp force but increases the risk of flash at parting lines if the tool is not adequately vented and clamped.

Against flame-retardant PC/ABS blends, FR15U has lower melt viscosity and faster cycle time but lower heat resistance and low-temperature toughness. Typical flame-retardant PC/ABS with a UL 94 V-0 rating at 1.5 mm may have a heat deflection temperature at 1.80 MPa above 90 °C and notched impact above 40 kJ/m2, but its melt volume rate is often below 10 cm3/10 min. FR15U is therefore selected where long flow length, thin-wall mouldability, and cost-controlled flame retardancy are critical, provided the end-use peak temperature remains below 70 °C under structural load.

Comparative values are representative published figures for class-level orientation; specific commercial grades may differ in filler content, impact modification, and precise thermal performance.

Chemical Resistance Boundaries and Regulatory Status

The chemical resistance profile follows ABS behaviour. Dilute aqueous acids, alkalis, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and some alcohols are resisted at room temperature, but ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents attack the polymer or cause environmental stress cracking. Moulded parts under residual stress can crack when wetted with acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, or toluene. Components that may contact these solvents should be stress-relieved by annealing or the polymer should be changed. Continuous immersion in hot water above 60 °C is not recommended because hydrolysis may degrade the flame-retardant package over time.

Regulatory documentation supplied by SABIC indicates compliance with European Union RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863, including restrictions on lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE. The product is intended to comply with the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for substances of very high concern on the current candidate list, as stated in the safety data sheet. A UL 94 Yellow Card is available for the SABIC grade designation. The material is not halogen-free and does not meet the halogen limits of IEC 61249-2-21; equipment specifications requiring halogen-free substrates must use a different resin.

During injection moulding of thin-wall power-adaptor housings with nominal wall stock of 1.5 mm, the material can be run on a 100-tonne hydraulic machine with a 2-cavity hot-runner tool. The fill time is kept below 1.5 s and switch-over to holding pressure is set at 95% of screw volume. Under these conditions, moulded parts show complete filling and retain their UL 94 V-0 classification when tested according to the relevant test standard. Weld lines opposite side gates are visible and should not be placed through screw bosses or snap-fit features. Published data for this specific tool configuration are limited; process parameters must be established on the production machine.

Because the compound contains a halogenated flame-retardant package, vent gases during prolonged moulding can accelerate corrosion of unprotected mould surfaces. Hard-chromed or stainless-steel tool inserts are used in high-volume production to reduce pitting. Mould maintenance intervals are generally shorter than for general-purpose ABS when exhaust ventilation is not present. The material is supplied in moisture-barrier packaging and should be kept sealed until use.
