    More Introduction

SABIC ABS FR15 is a flame-retardant acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) injection-moulding resin supplied for electrical, electronic and appliance housing applications. Manufacturer-published nominal data for the unfilled grade list density at 1.17 g/cm³ to ISO 1183-1, melt volume-flow rate at 18 cm³/10 min at 220 °C under a 10 kg load to ISO 1133-1:2022, tensile modulus at 2200 MPa to ISO 527-2, flexural modulus at 2100 MPa to ISO 178, and notched Izod impact at 14 kJ/m² at 23 °C to ISO 180/A. The grade is classified UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm thickness according to IEC 60695-11-10:2013. These figures establish the material at the lower-impact, higher-density end of the ABS family, which is typical of formulations carrying non-disclosed flame-retardant additives.

The material is specified for power-strip housings, adapter shells, battery-charger chassis, appliance control panels and low-voltage switchgear covers. In these end-uses the governing equipment standard is typically IEC 62368-1 or IEC 61010-1, with polymeric flame barriers evaluated by ANSI/UL 94 vertical burning. The flow length of SABIC ABS FR15 is not a single filler-independent property; it is a function of melt temperature, injection pressure, wall thickness and gate design. Published data for the specific spiral-flow configuration at 1.0 mm wall for this grade is limited, so injection-moulding trials on an 80–120 t hydraulic machine with a 20:1 L/D general-purpose screw are used to establish pressure drop and gate-freeze behaviour for each mould geometry.

How Does the Grade Behave Across a 200–260 °C Injection Moulding Envelope?

Pre-drying is mandatory before melt processing. A desiccant-bed dryer set to 80 °C for 3–4 h, with a supply-air dew point of -40 °C to -30 °C, is the standard starting condition; residual moisture must be kept at or below 0.05% by mass when tested to ISO 15512:2019. Moisture above that limit produces splay, surface roughness and local molecular-weight reduction in the melt.

Barrel settings on a reciprocating-screw injection-moulding machine should be staged from 190–210 °C at the rear zone, 210–230 °C in the middle zone, 220–250 °C in the front zone, and 230–250 °C at the nozzle. The melt temperature should not exceed 260 °C; flame-retardant ABS grades generate degradation gases and brown or black specks when the upper thermal limit is exceeded, and the residue becomes difficult to purge from hot-runner manifolds.

Mould temperature is normally held between 40 °C and 80 °C. Below 40 °C, an abrupt drop in weld-line strength and a higher tendency to jetting are observed, particularly in direct-gated enclosures. Above 80 °C, surface gloss improves and molded-in stress is reduced, but cycle time increases because the part must cool below the heat-deflection-limited ejection temperature before demoulding. The grade is processed with a general-purpose screw having 20:1–25:1 L/D and compression ratio of 2.0:1–2.5:1; screw speed should be limited to 30–60 rpm, and barrel residence time at melt temperature should not exceed 5 minutes.

Injection pressure at the material is usually 70–140 MPa depending on wall thickness and flow distance. Hold pressure is typically set at 50–70% of peak injection pressure and must be transferred before gate freeze; for 1.5 mm wall sections, gate-freeze time on production-scale equipment is typically observed at 0.3–0.6 s. High shear rates above 10,000 s⁻¹ at the gate can create local melt temperatures higher than the barrel set-point, causing burn streaks; this is controlled by reducing injection speed or increasing gate land length.

For re-compounding or masterbatch dilution on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 25:1–40:1 L/D, the barrel profile should be shifted 10–15 °C below injection-moulding settings to compensate for viscous heat generation. The mould shrinkage of SABIC ABS FR15 is published as 0.4–0.7% to ISO 294-4; longitudinal shrinkage is usually at the upper end of this range.

    Thermal, Mechanical and Regulatory Benchmarks

The short-term thermal performance of the grade is defined by Vicat softening temperature and deflection temperature under load. The Vicat B/50 value is 95 °C to ISO 306, and the HDT/A at 1.8 MPa is 82 °C to ISO 75-2/A. These values indicate that the material is not suitable for continuous structural service above 80 °C in unsupervised electrical installations; the equipment standard, not the raw-material HDT, determines the final temperature rise limits.

Regulatory compliance must be verified directly against the supplier SDS and UL Yellow Card. The material is normally listed under the UL Recognized Component Plastics program in category QMFZ2, where the flame rating, thickness and colour ranges are recorded. European Union obligations under RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 require an article-level evaluation; a raw-material declaration is not a substitute for finished-component compliance when metallic inserts, coatings or recycled content are introduced.

When UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm Is the Governing Requirement in Electrical Enclosures

In vertical-burn testing to IEC 60695-11-10:2013, a 125 mm × 13 mm × 1.5 mm specimen is conditioned for 48 h at 23 °C and 50% RH, then exposed to a 50 W laboratory flame for two 10 s applications. The V-0 classification requires that the total afterflame time for a set of five specimens does not exceed 50 s, no single afterflame exceeds 10 s, total afterflame plus afterglow for the two flame applications does not exceed 30 s for any specimen, and no flaming or glowing drips ignite a cotton indicator. SABIC ABS FR15 is rated V-0 at 1.5 mm under this protocol; thinner sections may fall to V-2 or HB, and colorants or regrind can shift the rating.

Against general-purpose ABS, the FR15 grade sacrifices notched impact and processability. General-purpose unfilled ABS commonly shows density of 1.04–1.07 g/cm³, notched Izod values of 20–35 kJ/m² at 23 °C to ISO 180/A, and no UL 94 V-0 rating at 1.5 mm. SABIC ABS FR15 provides the vertical-burn response but at 1.17 g/cm³ density and 14 kJ/m² notched Izod; the melt also tends to be stiffer and more heat-shear sensitive because the flame-retardant package limits the available rubber phase and contributes to char formation.

Flame-retardant PC/ABS is the direct higher-performance comparator. Commercial FR PC/ABS grades typically exhibit density of 1.18–1.25 g/cm³, Vicat B/50 values above 110 °C, notched Izod values of 30–70 kJ/m² at 23 °C, and processing melt temperatures of 260–300 °C. SABIC ABS FR15 offers lower drying severity and lower melt-temperature requirements, which can reduce energy input on plants that already mould unfilled ABS. It does not match PC/ABS in heat deflection, low-temperature ductility or chemical resistance to hydrocarbon exposure.

Chemical and environmental boundaries apply. The material should not be used in continuous contact with ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, benzene, toluene, strong acids or strong alkalis, because ABS loses strength through plasticization, swelling or molecular attack. Outdoor UV exposure without painting or UV-stabilization will cause chalking and impact loss within 6–12 months depending on irradiance; published data for this specific grade under accelerated weathering is limited.

On production-scale injection operations, the melt cushion should be maintained at 3–5 mm and screw decompression limited to 2–3 mm to avoid air entrapment and nozzle drool. Gate land lengths of 1.0–1.5 mm and a cold-slug well of 1.5 times the runner diameter reduce jetting in direct-gated power-strip housings. Regrind use above 25% is not recommended for UL-recognized parts unless the moulder has re-qualified the material at the maximum regrind ratio; flame-retardant additive distribution at the surface can be disrupted by repeated heat history, shifting the cotton-ignition result in the vertical burn test.
