    More Introduction

SABIC ABS EXABS01LG is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer positioned in the producer’s low-gloss extrusion and thermoforming portfolio. The designation “LG” distinguishes it from high-gloss injection moulding ABS by a deliberately controlled rubber-particle morphology that reduces specular reflectance while retaining impact energy absorption through the polybutadiene phase. Representative datasheet values include density of 1.04 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019 and melt-volume-flow rate of 8.0 cm³/10 min at 220 °C under 10.0 kg load per ISO 1133-1:2022. These are typical batch-average values, not minimum specification limits, and lot-specific values must be confirmed against the current producer datasheet. The material is commonly marked as ABS in accordance with ISO 11469:2016.

How Does EXABS01LG Differ from High-Gloss Injection Moulding ABS in Rheological and Surface Terms?

High-gloss injection grades are generally formulated with lower molecular-weight styrene-acrylonitrile matrices and smaller rubber particles to maximise flow and replication of polished tool surfaces. EXABS01LG operates at a lower melt-volume-flow rate of 8.0 cm³/10 min, corresponding to higher melt viscosity and greater sag resistance in extruded sheet. The low-gloss surface is not produced by talc or silica matting agents but by the size distribution and graft architecture of the butadiene phase; the refractive-index mismatch between polybutadiene and the styrene-acrylonitrile phase scatters incident light and reduces the 60° gloss reading below 30 GU when measured under ISO 2813:2014 on a textured roll surface. The trade-off is reduced flow length in thin-wall injection moulding. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, but ABS grades with melt-volume-flow rate below 10 cm³/10 min are typically restricted to wall sections above 1.5 mm in injection-moulded parts unless gate placement and packing pressure are optimised.

Comparative typical properties across unfilled ABS process families are given below. The values are representative ranges from industrial datasheets and are not specification limits.

Desiccant drying is mandatory before extrusion. The pellets are dried at 80 °C for 2–4 h in a closed-loop dehumidifying dryer with dew point at or below -35 °C, reducing residual moisture to 0.05 wt% or less. Failure to reach this moisture level produces splay, surface pitting, and melt viscosity fluctuation because residual water vaporises at processing temperatures and disturbs the melt surface. A single-stage extruder with L/D ratio from 24:1 to 30:1 and compression ratio 2.5:1–3.0:1 is sufficient. A barrier screw improves melt homogeneity but is not mandatory. The barrel profile should rise from 190–200 °C at the feed zone to 215–225 °C in the metering zone, with die temperature at 230–240 °C. Melt temperature measured at the die must not exceed 250 °C for extended runs because thermal degradation of the butadiene phase above 260 °C generates free radicals that reduce molecular weight and shift colour toward yellow or brown. Residence time at melt temperature should remain below 15 min. If line stoppage exceeds this threshold, the extruder should be reduced to 160–180 °C or purged with a purging compound or ABS regrind.

On a three-roll sheet line, low-gloss topography is transferred primarily by roll-surface finish rather than by resin chemistry alone. Textured or matte-finish rolls at 70–90 °C are used to prevent adhesion and reduce frozen-in orientation. Polished chrome rolls with surface roughness below 0.05 µm Ra will produce higher gloss even with EXABS01LG; final 60° gloss is therefore a function of roll texture, melt temperature, roll pressure, and sheet thickness. Gauge control should be maintained within ±3 % of nominal thickness because draw-ratio variation in downstream thermoforming is magnified in local wall-thickness reduction. Regrind of EXABS01LG sheet can be reintroduced at 20–30 wt% if free of dust, moisture, and degraded material, but higher regrind fractions reduce melt strength and gloss consistency.

Low-Gloss Topography Transfer and Thermoforming Performance Limits

Thermoforming of EXABS01LG sheet is typically performed at sheet surface temperatures of 150–180 °C. The lower melt-flow rate provides greater sag resistance than high-gloss or medium-impact extrusion ABS, which is critical on female tools with draw ratios from 1:2 to 1:3. Local wall thickness after forming must be measured; thinning below 75 % of original sheet gauge reduces notched impact energy disproportionately because the rubber-modified phase cannot accommodate the same local shear strain when the continuous matrix is over-oriented. In deep-draw sanitary ware, sheet thickness is typically specified at 3–8 mm to maintain final-wall impact above 15 kJ/m² under ISO 180/A:2020. Published data for the exact grade thinned at high draw ratios is limited, so process capability studies on the target tool are required.

For applications requiring higher stiffness than unfilled ABS, the grade is not a direct substitute for glass-filled ABS or PC/ABS blends. Flexural modulus is 2200 MPa under ISO 178:2019, tensile stress at yield is 43 MPa under ISO 527-2/1A/50, and heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa is 94 °C under ISO 75-2:2023. Continuous service above 90 °C under load requires a higher-heat polymer or design derating. The material is used in extruded sheet for thermoformed sanitary ware, luggage shells, small-appliance housings, and interior trim where low gloss and high impact are specified. Paint adhesion and adhesive bonding should be validated because low-gloss surfaces can retain processing waxes or roll-release residues; a wash or corona treatment may be required before bonding.

When Notched Impact Retention at -30 °C Defines the Specification

Notched Izod impact at 23 °C is reported as 35 kJ/m²; at -30 °C the value falls to approximately 10 kJ/m², which is typical for an unfilled ABS. The ductile-to-brittle transition is sensitive to rubber content, particle morphology, sheet orientation, and processing history. For sub-zero impact requirements, part design should avoid sharp internal radii below 0.5 mm, weld lines in high-stress regions, and high orientation in the sheet. Comparative high-gloss injection grades may have higher room-temperature flow but often exhibit lower low-temperature impact energy because of reduced rubber content or smaller particle size. Adding an inorganic matting agent to a standard high-impact ABS can reduce weld-line strength and low-temperature impact energy; EXABS01LG is formulated to provide low gloss without the same embrittlement mechanism, although the producer’s specific filler and additive package must be confirmed.

The terpolymer is not resistant to ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, or chlorinated solvents, and stress cracking under load can occur in contact with certain phthalate plasticisers, ethylene glycol ethers, and concentrated organic acids. Environmental stress-crack resistance can be evaluated under ISO 22088-2:2006. No food-contact claim is made here; regulatory status must be verified with the producer because migration limits under EU 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 180.22 can depend on colourants, processing aids, and final sheet thickness. Compliance with RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH 1907/2006/EC is subject to the specific formulation and must be confirmed by product stewardship declaration.
