    More Introduction

SABIC ABS C2800 is an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer supplied in pellet form for injection moulding. The grade is normally classified as a high-flow, medium-impact ABS. Nominal density is 1.05 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019. Melt volume-flow rate is 38 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg per ISO 1133-1:2022; melt mass-flow rate at 230 °C/3.8 kg is approximately 5.5 g/10 min per ASTM D1238-23. The resin is specified for thin-wall appliance fascias, electronic equipment enclosures, cosmetic closures, and consumer components requiring long flow-length capability with moderate ductility. Pellets must be dried before processing. In a desiccant dryer with a dew point of −30 °C or lower, drying at 80–85 °C for 2–4 h reduces moisture below 0.05 % by mass. When plant relative humidity exceeds 60 %, drying should not be shortened below 3 h. The grade is not flame-retardant; the standard UL rating is UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm.

Which Melt-Temperature and Moisture Boundaries Control C2800 Injection Moulding?

Residual moisture is the primary process risk. A moisture level above 0.10 % can produce silver streaks, gloss defects, and occasional gas burning at the vent because steam is generated in the compression zone. Closed-loop dry-air conveying is recommended if ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Desiccant-bed dew point should be −40 °C when surface gloss is used as an acceptance criterion.

Barrel profile settings are commonly 210 °C rear, 230 °C centre, 240 °C front, and 235–250 °C nozzle. Melt temperature measured at the nozzle should remain 220–260 °C. Above 270 °C, polybutadiene-phase degradation accelerates and may create yellow streaks, splay, and odour. The supplier does not recommend melt temperatures above 260 °C. Screw speed is limited to 30–80 rpm on a 40 mm screw; high shear heating can occur in barrier zones at speeds above 100 rpm if back pressure is set too high.

Back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa and a cushion of 2–5 mm are typical for melt homogenisation. For wall sections below 1.5 mm, linear flow-front velocities above 200 mm/s are usually required to prevent gate freeze-off. Spiral-flow length in a 2 mm channel at 240 °C and 80 MPa injection pressure is approximately 55–65 cm according to technical processing literature; published data for this specific C2800 lot and tool surface treatment are limited. Hold pressure is generally 50–70 % of peak injection pressure. Gate diameter below 1.0 mm can shear the melt excessively and reduce impact strength at the gate area.

Mould temperature should be 40–70 °C. Below 40 °C, surface gloss decreases and flow-direction residual stress increases; above 70 °C, cooling time increases and sink marks may deepen at thick sections. Hot-runner nozzles should be set at 230–250 °C with total residence time under 5 min. Purging with a medium-viscosity styrenic purge compound at 220 °C is used before colour changes or shutdown.

The supplier datasheet reports the following typical values for specimens conditioned under ISO 291 conditions of 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity.

The 16 kJ/m² notched Izod at 23 °C places C2800 in the medium-impact class. The drop to 7 kJ/m² at −30 °C excludes it from structural parts with cold-impact loading unless the part is redesigned with thick ribs, generous radii, and no sharp weld lines. The 77 °C HDT/A at 1.8 MPa should not be read as a continuous service temperature; under sustained load and temperatures above 65 °C, creep can reduce dimensional stability. Moisture uptake of 0.2–0.4 % after conditioning may slightly lower stiffness relative to dry-as-moulded samples because the absorbed moisture acts as a mild plasticizer. Published creep-rupture data for this exact formulation are limited, so long-term structural design should be validated on moulded plaques under end-use load.

When C2800 Mouldings Contact Solvents or Weathered Exteriors

The butadiene-rich phase in C2800 is susceptible to environmental stress-cracking under combined stress and chemical contact. Strong ESC agents include toluene, xylene, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, and chlorinated solvents. These fluids should not be used as cleaning agents on stressed snap-fit features or screwed bosses. Under outer-fibre strain of 0.5 % per ISO 22088-2:2006, toluene exposure can generate visible crazing within 2–24 h. Alcohol-based cleaning may be serviceable in occasional wiped contact, but process compatibility should be screened because alcohols vary in purity and can contain ester or ketone impurities. Dilute mineral acids at ambient temperature are typically acceptable for brief contact; continuous immersion in 10 % hydrochloric acid above 40 °C lies outside the service envelope due to phase swelling and surface attack.

For exterior applications, C2800 is not a weatherable ABS grade. Ultraviolet exposure causes yellowing and surface chalking. If unpigmented specimens are evaluated under ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc conditions, published data for this specific formulation are limited, and no outdoor colour-stability guarantee should be inferred. Carbon-black loading of approximately 2 % improves UV screening but does not prevent gloss loss. Painted or metallized parts require primers compatible with the ABS matrix; solventborne primers containing aromatic carriers may craze ribs, bosses, and weld lines.

For electrical and ignition-resistance screening, C2800 exhibits typical unfilled ABS insulation behaviour. Volume resistivity is reported in the range 10¹⁴ Ω·cm per IEC 62631-3-1; surface resistivity is 10¹⁵ Ω per IEC 62631-3-2; and dielectric strength for a 3.0 mm plaque is approximately 22 kV/mm per IEC 60243-1:2013. The flame rating is UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm. Because C2800 is not a flame-retardant grade, it must not be specified for components requiring UL 94 V-0, UL 94 5VA, or glow-wire performance above 550 °C per IEC 60695-2-11:2021. If regulatory ignition-resistance duties exist, a flame-retardant ABS or ABS/PC blend should be evaluated instead. Supplier declarations for RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC should be obtained for the specific production lot.

Differences from High-Impact, High-Heat, and Flame-Retardant ABS Grades

High-impact ABS grades commonly report notched Izod values of 30–40 kJ/m² at 23 °C and frequently retain 15–20 kJ/m² at −30 °C. C2800, by contrast, is specified at 16 kJ/m² at 23 °C and 7 kJ/m² at −30 °C. The trade-off is fluidity: high-impact grades may show melt volume-flow rates of 12–20 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg, which limits long-flow and thin-wall filling. C2800 is therefore selected for thin-wall enclosures and cosmetic parts with moderate toughness rather than safety-equipment shells or cold-temperature brackets.

High-heat ABS grades and many ABS/PC blends push HDT/A to 95–105 °C at 1.8 MPa, allowing painted parts to pass 120 °C bake cycles. C2800, with HDT/A of 77 °C, is not suitable for that thermal condition; post-moulding bake below 70 °C is a safer upper boundary for dimensional stability unless fixtures support the part. In comparison with flame-retardant ABS grades, C2800 offers higher melt fluidity and lower density because it contains no brominated or phosphate FR package; FR ABS grades often have densities of 1.18–1.21 g/cm³ and melt volume-flow rates below 20 cm³/10 min. C2800 remains UL 94 HB and cannot replace FR grades in enclosure applications with ignition-resistance requirements.

Compared with low-gloss, mass-polymerized ABS grades used in automotive interiors, C2800 may exhibit different surface gloss and colour change under ultraviolet ageing; published gloss retention data for this specific moulding condition are limited. The grade is therefore positioned as a high-flow injection-moulding resin for consumer and appliance housings where rapid fill and moderate mechanical strength are the controlling criteria.

On production-scale reciprocating-screw equipment, C2800 has been processed for appliance fascias and electronics enclosures with nominal wall thickness from 1.2 mm to 3.2 mm. Typical process data recorded on a 1,200 kN hydraulic clamp machine with a 40 mm screw and L/D 22 include barrel profile 210/230/240/245/240 °C, nozzle 235 °C, mould temperature 50 °C, back pressure 0.5 MPa, and holding pressure 55 MPa for a gate diameter of 1.5 mm. These settings are specific to the tool and machine combination; transfer to a hot-runner system requires monitoring of melt temperature at every drop to maintain the material below 260 °C. Incoming melt-volume-rate variation between production lots can reach ±3 cm³/10 min; this is usually accommodated by adjusting fill speed rather than raising melt temperature. For parts that will be painted or bonded, solvent sensitivity of the butadiene phase requires surface-treatment trials with isopropanol or low-aromatic primers under actual moulded stress. If an application demands low-temperature impact above 20 kJ/m² at −30 °C or continuous heat above 85 °C under load, C2800 should be replaced by an appropriate high-impact ABS or ABS/PC grade.
