    More Introduction

The material designated RTP 605 in the RTP Company 600 series is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) thermoplastic compounded with 5% by weight short glass fiber. The numerical suffix in the designation communicates the nominal glass fiber loading, placing this grade between unfilled RTP 600 and higher-reinforcement grades such as RTP 610 (10% glass fiber) and RTP 620 (20% glass fiber). During melt compounding, the glass fiber is typically metered downstream of the polymer melting zone in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 40:1 or higher. This downstream feeding arrangement minimizes fiber attrition while permitting through-screw distributive mixing. The glass fiber is typically E-glass with a filament diameter of 10–14 µm and a silane sizing formulated for styrenic matrices; the sizing chemistry governs interfacial adhesion between the glass surface and the SAN phase, which directly controls tensile strength retention and resistance to fiber pull-out. Published datasheet values for this specific configuration are limited; all numerical properties cited herein are compiled from the ABS product class and should be confirmed against the current RTP Company technical datasheet. Test protocols referenced throughout include ASTM D638-14, ASTM D790-17, ASTM D256-10e1, ASTM D648-16, ASTM D792-13, and ASTM D955-08.

The following table compares representative properties across the RTP 600 series.

    PropertyRTP 600 (unfilled)RTP 605 (5% glass)RTP 610 (10% glass)RTP 620 (20% glass)
    Tensile strength (MPa), ASTM D638-1440455265
    Flexural modulus (MPa), ASTM D790-172200280035005000
Notched Izod impact (J/m), ASTM D256-10e1220648075
Heat deflection temperature at 1.82 MPa (°C), ASTM D648-16859699104
    Density (g/cm³), ASTM D792-131.051.081.121.20
    Mold shrinkage (%), ASTM D955-080.5–0.70.4–0.60.3–0.50.2–0.4

When comparing RTP 605 with unfilled RTP 600, the most consequential difference is the reduction in average mold shrinkage from 0.5–0.7% to 0.4–0.6%. However, flow-direction shrinkage is reduced more than transverse-direction shrinkage, which increases shrinkage anisotropy and requires adjustment of tooling dimensions. The penalty is a reduction in notched Izod impact strength from approximately 220 J/m to approximately 64 J/m, as measured under ASTM D256-10e1 at 3.2 mm specimen thickness. Relative to RTP 610, the 5% glass fiber grade retains higher surface gloss and lower fiber read-through on textured mold surfaces, a significant consideration in consumer-visible components. Relative to RTP 620, RTP 605 has lower flexural modulus and lower heat deflection temperature but superior melt flow, permitting longer flow paths at equivalent injection pressure.

What Processing Parameters Govern Fiber Orientation and Weld Line Integrity?

Pre-drying of RTP 605 is mandatory prior to injection molding. ABS is hygroscopic due to the acrylonitrile component; moisture levels above 0.05% by weight produce splay, silver streaking, and surface blisters on the molded part. A desiccant dryer set to 80–90°C for 2–4 hours typically reduces moisture to below 0.05%. In production-scale molding lines with ambient relative humidity above 60%, open hoppers are inadequate; a closed-loop desiccant drying system with a dew point of −40°C or lower is specified. Melt temperature should be maintained between 200°C and 230°C, measured at the nozzle. Exceeding 240°C for extended residence times initiates thermal degradation of the polybutadiene phase, manifested as brown discoloration and progressive loss of impact strength. The thermal degradation follows first-order kinetics with an activation energy in the range of 150–200 kJ/mol; a 10°C increase above the upper limit roughly doubles the degradation rate. Barrel temperature profiles typically decrease from rear to front, with the rear zone at 190–210°C, the middle zone at 210–220°C, and the front zone at 220–230°C, while the nozzle is held at 215–225°C. Mold temperature should be controlled between 50°C and 80°C. A lower mold temperature increases surface gloss but freezes in higher residual stress; a higher mold temperature improves weld line strength and reduces post-mold dimensional change. At knit lines, glass fiber orientation perpendicular to the flow front is responsible for weld line strength reductions of 15–30% relative to unfilled ABS. Gate placement that directs the flow front to meet along a single merging path, rather than a head-on collision, mitigates this loss. Injection velocity should be moderate to high, typically 50–150 mm/s at the screw front, to promote fiber dispersion and uniform packing. Excessive velocity through gates smaller than 1.0 mm in diameter can induce fiber fracture and surface roughness at the gate bloom. Back pressure is maintained at 0.3–0.7 MPa to aid additive dispersion without excessive screw recovery time. The screw should have a low compression ratio between 2.0:1 and 2.5:1 and a wear-resistant barrel and check ring due to the abrasive nature of glass fiber. Shot sizes should be 30–70% of barrel capacity; residence times above 5 minutes at melt temperature degrade the impact-modified phase. Melt flow rate, measured under ASTM D1238-13 at 230°C and 3.8 kg, typically falls between 8–15 g/10 min, which is slightly lower than unfilled ABS due to the glass fiber fraction.

Within electronic enclosure applications, RTP 605 is specified where the wall-section stiffness of unfilled ABS is insufficient but the pronounced fiber read-through and reduced surface gloss of 10% or 20% glass-filled grades are unacceptable. The shift in heat deflection temperature from approximately 85°C for unfilled ABS to approximately 96°C for RTP 605, measured under ASTM D648-16 Method B at 1.82 MPa, permits intermittent contact with heat-generating components such as power resistors, LED drivers, and printed circuit board stand-offs in consumer electronics housings. The retained notched Izod impact strength of approximately 64 J/m is lower than unfilled ABS but remains adequate for snap-fit assembly features when radii of at least 0.5 mm are designed into latch transitions. In automotive interior applications, the compound is used for HVAC register louvers, switch bezels, and instrument panel trim. The glass fiber content reduces the coefficient of linear thermal expansion from approximately 80–100 × 10⁻⁶ m/m/°C for unfilled ABS to approximately 60–75 × 10⁻⁶ m/m/°C for RTP 605, reducing clearance variation across temperature cycling from −40°C to 85°C. In appliance control panel housings, the compound bridges the gap between polycarbonate/ABS blends and mineral-filled polypropylene. Surface hardness, measured as Rockwell R scale under ASTM D785-08, typically falls between 105 and 112, higher than unfilled ABS. The compound is not recommended for outdoor weathering applications without an exterior coating because the polybutadiene phase undergoes photo-oxidative degradation under sustained UV exposure. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; application validation under end-use temperature, humidity, and vibration cycling is required before production release.

Mechanical Property Envelope and Orientation-Dependent Anisotropy

On tensile specimens molded as Type 1A per ISO 527-2:2012 or Type I per ASTM D638-14, measured properties of RTP 605 are strongly orientation-dependent. Tensile strength is higher when the glass fiber aligns in the direction of injection. The degree of anisotropy is lower for RTP 605 than for RTP 620 because the lower fiber volume fraction permits more random fiber orientation in the core layer of a molded wall section. Typical tensile strength falls in the range of 44–48 MPa, tensile modulus between 2800–3300 MPa, flexural strength between 72–80 MPa, and flexural modulus between 2600–3000 MPa, as measured under ASTM D790-17 Procedure A at 1.3 mm/min crosshead speed. The tensile modulus increase relative to unfilled ABS is approximately 25–40%, while the creep modulus under a 10 MPa static load at 23°C for 1000 hours is approximately 60–70% of the instantaneous value. Notched Izod impact strength values are influenced by specimen thickness; the standard 3.2 mm thickness under ASTM D256-10e1 yields approximately 64 J/m. At 1.6 mm thickness, values may decrease by 10–20% due to the reduced volume of the impact-modified phase. The heat deflection temperature of 96°C at 1.82 MPa is measured on annealed specimens per ASTM D648-16 Method B. Unannealed specimens may exhibit heat deflection temperature values 5–8°C lower. Vicat softening temperature, measured under ISO 306:2013 Method B50 at 50 N load and 50°C/h heating rate, typically falls between 100°C and 105°C. Mold shrinkage values of 0.4–0.6% are measured after 48 hours at 23°C and 50% relative humidity per ASTM D955-08. Full dimensional stabilization requires approximately 24–48 hours after molding, during which post-mold shrinkage and moisture absorption occur simultaneously.

In high-humidity storage environments, RTP 605 pellets require sealed, moisture-barrier containers. Opened containers should be resealed and the material re-dried prior to molding if exposure time exceeds 4 hours at relative humidity above 60%. Equilibrium moisture absorption of the compound at 23°C and 50% relative humidity is approximately 0.15–0.25% by weight, measured under ASTM D570-98(2018). The compound should not be blended with regrind at levels above 20% by weight without prior validation, because glass fiber length distribution in regrind shifts toward shorter fibers, reducing tensile modulus and notched Izod impact relative to virgin material. The combination of RTP 605 with amine-based colorants or flame-retardant additives is not recommended; amine species accelerate oxidative degradation of the butadiene phase at melt processing temperatures. The compound is not intended for direct food contact, medical implant, or potable water plumbing applications. Continuous service in contact with ketones, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons is not recommended because ABS stress-cracking resistance is insufficient in these environments. The glass fiber content also increases the wear rate of conveying equipment; pneumatic conveying bends should have a radius-to-diameter ratio of at least 6:1 to minimize pellet fracturing.

When Regulatory Compliance and End-of-Life Disassembly Constrain Material Selection

For regulatory evaluation, RTP 605 must be assessed against the current RTP Company technical datasheet and applicable supplier compliance documentation. Typical glass-filled ABS compounds are formulated to comply with EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by Directive (EU) 2015/863, meaning that lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers are not intentionally added and are below the maximum concentration values. Under EU REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, typical formulations do not contain substances of very high concern (SVHC) above 0.1% by weight. Flammability is typically rated UL 94 HB at a minimum thickness of 1.5 mm under UL 94, 6th Edition. For automotive interior applications, the compound typically meets the burn rate requirements of FMVSS 302 and SAE J369 when tested at the specified thickness. The glass fiber fraction is mineral and non-combustible, which affects incineration residue calculations under end-of-life directives. A compliance matrix is provided below.
