Injection molding of unpainted, weatherable automotive outer-body trim based on 100 wt% ROMIRA ROTEC® ASA E 310 as the sole polymer matrix follows the same filling, packing, and cooling sequence as ABS but with a narrower thermal window for surface gloss and color stability. In production trials on a 3500 kN servo-hydraulic machine fitted with an L/D 22 general-purpose screw and an eight-drop hot-runner tool, melt temperatures above 262 °C initiate visible yellowing, while melt temperatures below 238 °C produce jetting and elevated viscosity that drives injection pressure beyond 90 bar hydraulic. The pellets are pre-dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 4 h to a residual moisture of ≤0.03 wt%; lots exceeding 0.05 wt% moisture develop silver streaks at the gate lip. Mold temperature is held at 60–80 °C, hold pressure between 60–80 MPa, and cooling time for 2.5 mm wall stock is 18–24 s. In the formulation, ASA E 310 is processed as the neat base resin at 100 phr; external additives are limited to 0.2–0.5 phr acrylic processing aid, 0.1–0.3 phr mold release, and a weatherable color concentrate at 0.5–2.0 phr depending on target L-value and part thickness. Qualification references ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc exposure for 1500–3000 h at a black-standard temperature of 65 ± 3 °C, SAE J2527:2004 automotive exterior weathering, ISO 179-1/1eA notched Charpy impact, and DIN 75201:2011 fogging where cabin-adjacent integration is specified. Finished unpainted articles include mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, radiator grille surrounds, rear lamp bezels, wheel arch moldings, and roof rail end caps.
Unfilled ROMIRA ROTEC® ASA E 310 is specified for injection-molded outdoor telecommunication and electrical enclosures where the absence of a post-molding paint layer determines long-term weathering cost. In neat form at 100 phr, the material is processed at a melt temperature of 230–250 °C and mold temperature of 50–70 °C; sequential valve-gated hot runners with 2.5–3.5 mm wall sections are preferred to prevent flow-front hesitation and visible weld lines around bosses. The formulation addition ratio includes 0.3–0.8 phr hindered amine light stabilizer, 0.2–0.5 phr UV absorber, 0.1–0.3 phr antioxidant, and, only when certification demands, a flame-retardant masterbatch. Unfilled ASA E 310 is classified UL 94 HB; UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm is not an inherent property of the unfilled grade and requires a verified FR compound. Field-scale molding data show that raising mold temperature from 60 °C to 80 °C improves weld-line impact but extends cycle time by 8–12 s at 3 mm nominal wall. Terminal product types include IP66-rated telecommunication line boxes, smart meter housings, outdoor gateway enclosures, weatherproof disconnect boxes, and LED driver housings.

On coextrusion lines producing rigid PVC window main profiles, a 0.2–0.5 mm capstock layer from 100 phr ROMIRA ROTEC® ASA E 310 provides the weatherable outer surface without replacing the PVC core. The capstock formulation addition ratio is governed by color intensity: light gray and white systems use 4–8 phr titanium dioxide, dark brown and black systems use 0.3–0.8 phr high-purity carbon black, and all colors use 1.0–2.0 phr acrylic processing aid plus 0.5–1.0 phr external lubricant. A dedicated 45 mm single-screw capstock extruder with L/D 30 and a barrier screw is run at a melt temperature of 200–220 °C, while the PVC main profile melt is delivered at 190–205 °C; the coextrusion feedblock and die are held at 210–225 °C. Adhesion failures at the capstock-PVC interface occur when the temperature differential between the two melts exceeds 25–30 °C, and startup contamination with degraded PVC in the capstock channel produces dark specks that can only be cleared by purging with ASA E 310. Vacuum calibration at 0.6–0.9 bar and line speeds of 1.8–2.8 m/min are used for 60 mm main profiles. Compliance for external window profile durability is assessed under EN 12608-1:2016, ASTM D638-14 for capstock tensile properties, and ISO 4892-2:2013 method A cycle 1 for color and impact retention after 4000 h. Terminal finished products include window and door outerskins, soffit boards, fascia panels, shutter profiles, and architectural cladding strips.
Marine exterior trim and hatch covers molded or thermoformed from ROMIRA ROTEC® ASA E 310 are exposed to salt spray, high UV irradiance, and intermittent sub-zero mechanical impact. Neat formulation at 100 phr uses a stabilizer package of 0.5–1.2 phr hindered amine light stabilizer, 0.2–0.5 phr UV absorber, and 0.1–0.3 phr antioxidant; where higher heat deflection is specified for engine-compartment-adjacent parts, 30–40 wt% polycarbonate may be compounded with ASA E 310, moving heat deflection temperature upward but reducing surface gloss retention after 2000 h xenon exposure. Published data for this specific blend configuration is limited; compound development trials at the molder are required. Sheet for thermoforming is extruded on a 75 mm single-screw machine with L/D 30 at melt temperatures of 230–250 °C, polished roll stack temperatures of 70–90 °C, and sheet thickness from 2.0–5.0 mm. Thermoforming into hatch covers and vent panels is run at sheet surface temperatures of 140–180 °C, using aluminum molds with 0.5–0.8 mm formed-in radii to avoid corner thinning below 80% of nominal wall. Testing follows ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc at 0.51 W/(m²·nm) at 340 nm, ISO 9227:2022 neutral salt spray for 1000 h, ISO 180/1A notched Izod at 23 °C and -30 °C, and ASTM D638-14 Type I tensile at 50 mm/min. Terminal finished product types include marine deck hatches, bow pulpit covers, RV exterior vent frames, access panels, and navigation light housings.
For injection-molded garden equipment housings, accelerated weathering validation uses ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1 and ISO 4892-3:2016 fluorescent UV where OEM specifications require a second light source. ROMIRA ROTEC® ASA E 310 is used as the base polymer at 100 phr for low-load shrouds and side covers; for structural deck carriers and cutting-deck baffles, glass fiber reinforcement at 15–20 wt% is added with 0.3–0.5 phr silane coupling agent. Moving from unfilled to 20 wt% glass increases tensile modulus from approximately 2300 MPa to above 4500 MPa, but reduces notched impact by roughly 30–40%; those values derive from publicly available unfilled and reinforced ASA compound datasets, and published data for this specific configuration is limited. Processing on a 4000 kN injection molding machine with a wear-resistant screw and L/D 20 uses melt temperatures of 230–260 °C, mold temperatures of 60–80 °C, and fill speeds below 120 mm/s to limit glass fiber orientation-induced warpage. For unfilled low-load parts, the formulation addition ratio may include 0.2–0.5 phr processing aid, 0.1–0.3 phr mold release, and carbon black masterbatch at 0.5–1.5 phr. Compliance is anchored to ISO 180/1A notched Izod at -30 °C for cold drop resistance, ASTM D638-14 for tensile properties, ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus, and ANSI/OPEI B71.1 where pedestrian-controlled mower components are involved. Terminal finished product types include lawn mower hoods, leaf blower housings, string trimmer guards, generator covers, and snow thrower chute deflectors.
Photovoltaic balance-of-system components exposed to 25-year outdoor service life require retention of physical properties after sustained UV and thermal cycling. For injection-molded junction boxes and connector housings, ROMIRA ROTEC® ASA E 310 is processed at 100 phr as the polymer phase; typical additive loadings include 0.5–1.5 phr UV stabilizer package, 0.1–0.4 phr antioxidant, and a flame-retardant masterbatch when UL 94 V-0 or 5VA at wall thickness 1.5–2.0 mm is specified. Unfilled heat-stabilized ASA E 310 is not intrinsically UL 94 V-0; halogen-free FR loadings between 15–25 phr can be used in compounding but lower notched Izod impact and require mold-flow adjustment. Injection molding on a 1200–1800 kN machine with a 25 mm or 30 mm screw and L/D 22 uses melt temperatures of 230–250 °C, mold temperatures of 70–90 °C, and hold pressures of 50–70 MPa; sequential valve gating on flat lids reduces warpage to ±0.2 mm across 120 mm length. Testing references UL 373:2019 for PV junction boxes, IEC 62852:2014/AMD1:2020 for connectors in photovoltaic DC systems, IEC 60529 for IP67/IP68 enclosure protection, and ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc for color and impact retention. Terminal finished product types include photovoltaic junction boxes, DC connector housings, microinverter enclosures, bypass diode housings, and solar combiner box lids.
