Application of Reliance Industries HDPE HD-T10

In thin-wall dairy packaging, Reliance HD-T10 is processed against a frozen-layer-dominated pressure drop that becomes critical when nominal wall thickness is specified below 0.70 mm. Production lines using 48-cavity hot-runner stacks with valve-gated drops operate with barrel temperatures set between 200 °C and 240 °C, while the melt temperature measured at the nozzle is held at 210–235 °C; the nominal melt flow rate of 10 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 and density of 0.960 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019 reduce the cooling time required for 3.5–4.5 s cycles on a 500–650 t tiebarless clamp. Food-contact compliance is documented under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 2.1, EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 with overall migration limit 10 mg/dm², and GB 4806.7-2016 for China export; specific migration from white masterbatch is controlled under EU 10/2011 Annex I authorized-substance lists. The dry blend is composed of 97.0–98.5 wt% HD-T10, 1.0–2.5 wt% TiO₂ white masterbatch carried in LDPE, and 0.05–0.15 wt% slip/antioxidant masterbatch; moisture uptake above 0.03 wt% requires pre-drying at 70–80 °C for 2 h in a desiccant hopper. The process uses an accumulator-assisted screw with back pressure 8–12 bar, injection velocity 80–120 mm/s, pack/holding pressure 50–70 MPa, and mold coolant 10–18 °C. In-mold pressure transducers placed at the last-fill point are used to maintain peak cavity pressure between 25 and 40 MPa; below 25 MPa, surface sink marks appear on container bottoms, while above 40 MPa, flash risk increases along the rim. Terminal products are dairy cups, margarine tubs, dessert cups, and thin-wall deli containers with volumes from 100 mL to 1,000 mL.

What Does the 10 g/10 min Melt Flow Rate Change in Closure Shell Injection?

Molding a 72-cavity shuttle mold for 28/410 closures with HD-T10 shifts the process window toward lower injection pressure but raises gate-stringing risk if the melt temperature exceeds 240 °C. For still-water, UHT dairy, and edible-oil closures, the grade is run at 94–100 wt% base resin, 0–5.0 wt% LDPE or LLDPE for ESCR adjustment in edible-oil caps, 0.8–1.5 wt% white masterbatch, and 0.05–0.2 wt% erucamide slip masterbatch for torque control; silicone-based external mold release agents are avoided where induction sealing is used. Food-contact compliance is covered by FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for aqueous and dry foods and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011; organoleptic neutrality for oil is checked under DIN 10955. The production process uses a four-plate stripper-plate mold with cold runner, melt temperature 210–240 °C, mold temperature 15–25 °C, hold pressure 35–55 MPa, and cycle time 6–9 s; clamp requirement measured at 0.4–0.6 t per cavity for 28 mm closures. Terminal products include 28 mm and 38 mm screw caps for mineral water, UHT milk, edible oil, and dry nutritional powders, with tamper-evident band breakage torque targeted between 1.0 and 1.6 N·m after cooling. If mold temperature falls below 15 °C, the tamper-evident band can shatter during high-speed ejection; if resin moisture exceeds 0.03 wt%, surface splay appears on closure tops.

Frozen-Layer Stability in Industrial Pail Molding

Injection-molded 20 L and 25 L open-top pails made from HD-T10 are specified for water-based paints, construction adhesives, and lubricant greases, where stacking strength under ISO 12048 is a pass/fail at 40 °C for 28 days. A pail tool with three-plate cold runner and central gate typically uses barrel settings 190–230 °C, mold coolant 15–25 °C, a 2.2 kg shot injected at 140–180 mm/s screw forward velocity, and hold pressure 55–75 MPa for 6–8 s. Formulation: 96.0–98.0 wt% HD-T10, 1.0–2.5 wt% UV stabilizer masterbatch for outdoor storage, and 0.2–1.0 wt% color concentrate; if post-consumer HDPE recyclate is included at 10–30 wt%, the HD-T10 weight percentage is reduced accordingly and clamp force may increase by 5–10%. For dangerous goods pails, UN certification under ADR/RID 6.1.5 and IMDG Code requires drop testing at 1.8 m and stack test at 3 m after filling with water, with wall thickness maintained at 1.8–2.5 mm. A known processing bottleneck is gate frost: at gate diameter below 2.5 mm and melt temperature above 240 °C, shear heating creates white crystalline streak marks radiating from the gate. Terminal products are 10 L, 20 L, and 25 L open-top pails, paint buckets, ink buckets, and grease pails.

Fruit and dairy crate sidewalls carrying a 4° draft angle are molded from HD-T10 with nominal wall thickness of 2.0–3.0 mm, using sequential valve-gated injection to avoid knit-line cracking at handle openings. The grade is combined with 0.1–0.3 wt% nucleating masterbatch and 0.2–0.5 wt% process stabilizer masterbatch; no plasticizer is used. Compliance for crates holding raw produce is covered under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011; load-bearing validation for converted pallets uses ISO 8611-1:2011; recycled content traceability uses EN 15343:2007. Process: injection molding machine with 1,000–1,500 t clamp, shot weights 4–8 kg, melt temperature 210–240 °C, mold temperature 20–30 °C, holding pressure 40–60 MPa, cycle time 45–70 s. Terminal products: ventilated fruit crates, dairy crates, beverage crates, and solid-wall logistics totes up to 600 mm × 400 mm × 300 mm. At mold temperature above 35 °C, ribbed 600 mm crates can develop base warpage exceeding 3 mm.

For Laboratory Specimen Containers, Bio-inert Processing Requires Cleanroom Molding

Requiring a cleanroom production environment with no mold release agents, single-use laboratory specimen containers molded from HD-T10 are produced as translucent, not transparent, articles; liquid level reading lines are therefore formed as surface steps rather than printed windows. The formulation is held at 99.5–100 wt% HD-T10 with 0.05–0.1 wt% antioxidant/stabilizer masterbatch; additives are selected from USP 661.1, Ph. Eur. 3.1.5, and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006-compliant inventories. The production process runs in an ISO Class 8 cleanroom on 120–180 t electric injection molding machines with closed-loop hold pressure 40–60 MPa, melt temperature 200–230 °C, mold temperature 15–25 °C, and cycle time 8–14 s. Terminal products: diagnostic specimen cups, micronutrient dosing cups, centrifuge bucket liners, and single-use laboratory scoops. Published data on sterilization-induced mechanical property shift for this specific HD-T10 configuration is limited; users should validate post-irradiation impact retention per ISO 11137-1.

When HD-T10 Is Diluted With Recyclate in Logistics Tote Production

Closed-loop distribution totes and automotive parts boxes produced under extended producer responsibility mandates use HD-T10 as the virgin backbone at 60–80 wt%, with clean post-industrial HDPE recyclate at 20–40 wt%. The blend requires recyclate melt flow rate between 5 and 15 g/10 min under ASTM D1238-20 to avoid layer-to-layer viscosity variation in the plastication zone; if recyclate MFI falls below 5 g/10 min, injection pressure rises and short shots appear at rib ends. Compliance: ISO 14021:2016 for recycled content claims, EN 15343:2007 for traceability, GB/T 40006.1-2021 for recycled plastics quality, ISO 8611-1:2011 for palletized unit-load validation, and FMVSS 302 for automotive storage-bin fire resistance where applicable. Process: 650 t injection molding machine running a 3.6 kg shot at barrel temperatures 210–250 °C, screw back pressure 6–10 bar, hold pressure 50–65 MPa, mold temperature 20–30 °C. Terminal products: returnable distribution totes, automotive parts boxes, e-commerce sorting trays, and interplant logistics containers. A known incompatibility: recyclate containing amine-based additive packages or PP contamination above 1 wt% can cause delamination and impact strength loss exceeding 30% under ISO 179-1:2010.
